Athens Republique
Athens, Georgia
Julian Lucasse Brown, a recently returned World War I veteran, started the Athens Republique in Athens, Georgia in late 1919. The Saturday weekly reported on Black community life in the city and surrounding towns, ran national stories on anti-Klan organizing and anti-lynching efforts, alongside the weddings, funerals, and church events that white papers ignored. Brown published out of the Hull Street "Hot Corner" business district until about 1927, when the paper folded. Digitized pages provided by Digital Library of Georgia.
