California Eagle
Los Angeles, California
John J. Neimore started the California Eagle in 1879, but the paper took off after Charlotta Bass took ownership in 1912. Bass, among the earliest Black women to run a newspaper, turned it into a political force in Los Angeles, fighting housing segregation, restrictive covenants, and police misconduct. The Eagle printed job listings and community resources for Black newcomers to Southern California. Its circulation climbed to around 60,000 by the mid-1920s.
