C., Nov. 16—President Coolidge wrote a notable letter on the occasion of the recent dedication of the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt to the nation, the president of old-fashioned patriotism and the President had the courage, in the midst of it, to have it understood that when he was president, justice and a square deal, he meant that the rules should be applied, without regard to "nace, color or creed." He said that the president had not been accustomed in recent years to definitely know just what the fine spun expressions of presidents were to or exclusive of a tooth portion of the nation. In his silent, quiet way, the President is going about the task of Chief Executive, dropping a little suggestion of interest affecting the program of reasoning out racial salvation in the good old U.S. A, so far as Colored Americans are interested in effecting potential candidates for the White house office if not on the defensive corner, he has been successful the President has been in keeping loud criticism from his door, while his Field Marshals have been unorganized and unrecognized in unorganized sentiment that will have its climax at the Republican National Convention in Chicago next year,念念 of Massachusetts and New England. Walter L. Cohen's name is to come up for confirmation before the United States Senate, and he will be the member. Will it go over? There is every reason to believe that it will go over, that is to say, if Democratic Senators are to be elected, they might ask to go over, Cohen, who is one of the active men of the old school of politics, is now before the Senate to vote on the nomination. The late President Harding say to that even sending his name in for a recent appointment after the Senate is elected, he is in the ground of "Senatorial Courtesy," Numbers of Republican senators have openly declared that "for the last time," the Senate will vote on the ground of "Senatorial Courtesy" when it is quite obvious that race prejudice is at the bottom of the whole thing. Pardon me Mr. Editor, I did not start out to say the above; but I believe that the ground ought to be taught to the new shoots in order that the young promising tree may have the right-of-way. The object is to tell of the new purpose and the activity of the State Teachers' Association since last we met. My idea of the new purpose is to raise the students to the general good of our people. On leaving the Fort Worth session we met the Association of Negro teachers in the world. I felt a great responsibility rests upon my shoulders to work for my people in our state. I have in our state in our state with black and white boys at Gateville. This reformatory school is almost assured if the Association will continue to push it. W. Jackson, in his criticism of the poliey of the association, had touched a rather sore spot. But the character of Prof, Sanford’s reply to this criticism evidences such real and practically evidenced change of policy that it may almost be declared that the two educators were of the me pin. Certainly the accomplishments of the present bead te that his thought since being inducted into hhas been along the tines of progress and his actions no less worthy of serous consideration and appreciation, Two accom plishments of his stand out us particularly significant, ~ “He has placed the State Association of Negro Teachers on ree- ord as beng interested in «separate reform schol. Even the Gov ernor and the Legislature are now avare ofthe fact that the As. soclation {s alive to some of the needs of Texas Negro youths. He has represented our group at the preliminary meeting of th Sehol Survey Sat? and impressed them withthe necessity of raking en intensive study of Negro schools, their length of term, eauipment is step, in the estimation of the Express, is the most signi- cam and holds promise of more lasting good tothe youth of our state than anything which coald have been done. Tt is probably fire that the full significance of a state survey has not yet come home to the rank and file of the teachers in Texas because of the fact: that it has never before been attempted in the history of our state. But when one realizes that it wil be a comprehensive study of the school aystem of the whole state with a view to finding its [weaknesses and laying a program for its correction through s¢- ties of years, he.can more roadily measure the importance of hav. the needs of Negro schools’ as carefully: studied as those of others. An exhaustive study of Negro schools together with oth er san, by proper sentiment, prove that no smal part ofthe blame for Texas rank of thirty-fifth among the states of the Union in euatin is duet the poor pay of Negro teachers, poor calibre of teachers, poor buildings terms. In fact, it now appears that the appearance of President Sanford xt this meeting: may prove the greatest help that Negro education in Texas has recelved ‘many years, Tt ig only to be hoped that the majority of the members of the association may be’ as ly mbued with the api of [more diveet. action as bas been the president and Prof. Jackson. The election of officers to preside over the Teachers of Texas has drifted from the teachers of Texas and therefore overly clear thinking man or woman who may be a member of that body has become a member of that body who has become sure would welcome any change that could be substituted for the present management. We believe that all self-respecting teachers of that body should repudiate the plan now in effect, and we should not campaign over the state for the purpose of putting into office some persons whose role would be to president because he had attended a few sessions of the Association and was one test for the office of the president of the Teachers' Association and that test is service. The teachers who have served well their communities as principals for a number of years and work hard to be the choice of the Teachers for the office of president. We do not share this opinion with us but we may repudiate that eminent service should be taught to settle this question once for all times. This is true in all the railroad services in the country, in all the governmental institutions, and in all the department of human endeavor where merit and effort are valued. The manner of electing officers has done much to disrupt our organization and has made it difficult to fund the convention that he had not received any good out of his attendance. We would suggest, therefore, the election of officers by the committee of the convention, and the election in the various candidates is productive of much corruption and has nothing but disturb us and constantly undermine the criticism, upon the teachers all the time. We believe that there is but one solution to this problem by a special committee appointed by the president of the convention or electored by the Attorney Board. The Advisory Board. None of these things seem to have moved Mr. Lasker from his original institution, from the hill, and giving him a four year residence on the "mother" Adding to this is a story from the chief Washington correspondent of the Chicago Tribune, owned by the McCormick company, stating that Senator Medill McCormick of Illinois may support Senator Johnson for President, and that it is his responsibility to permit his name to be used for the high office, the Senator from Illinois will be in the running.
