Too much credit cannot be given those who are responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. It is filling a long felt need in its policy of making the records of the race permanent. And, though the race was slow to realize the worth of this accomplishment, it now recognizes to a plausibly great extent, the service which this association is rendering it.
The history of the Druids of age ago was written in the stone cavern which they built. The civilization of the Egyptians can be traced by the heliophysics crudely drawn on the stones which have survived the ravages of the forces of Nature; the Greeks and Romans is percepted for us of later centuries in the records, which they left in beautiful architecture and written records; but the Negro alone has been content to rest his case, as far as the records of his life in America is concerned, with the histories of other groups. This it is which is directly responsible for his non-inclusion in all of the records which fell of the deeds of those who have helped to build this great empire in the New World; this is it which is responsible for the fact that his children must hunt long before they find a record of the deeds of Illustrous black men. Study of the history of other race will teach—those who have been born in Africa and who on earth must leave some record of their doings where those who succeed them can find them.
According to the Negro Year Book, 1925-1926, there were in the U. S. a 7,296,975 Negro children 5 to 20 years of age of inclusion. Of these, 2,089,289, or only 669 percent were enrolled in schools. In 1926, 2,089,289 of the Negro State Superintendent of Education, there were in the 16 former slave states and Oklahoma and D. C. 8,144,669 Negro children of school age. Of these, 2,149,489 of the Negro children were in the school. The number of Negro public school teachers in these states is 43,018.
These figures give evidence of a startling lack of interest in our children on the part of those who are charged with in charge. This condition must be changed, and there is no better way of helping in bringing this chance to pass than by the method which allows the employee to be held by the city, who is holding a series of "go-back to school services." In these services, he is stressing the importance of education in the preparation for college. He is encouraging the young people of his congregation to continue in school. This encouragement goes to the extent of actually helping in a financial way, those who prove themselves, by doing things which they desire.
for all of the laws of the nation eventually. Let Missouri continue to lynch. Let it continue to fail to punish these murders. Let other states come to the same point as has Missouri and all of the Southern States. Let the Federal government lynch and America will reshape too late that the prejudice against the Negro will have resulted in its complete undone. It is now happening.
One of the most inspiriting bits of news of recent date comes from North Carolina, where more than three hundred battles of rural churches are studying church management and vernaism pleasing. It is good that this is happening, but it is also true that many who are taking advantage of these schools' export improvement in the aspect of their charges. It is to be hoped that more will take head and do likewise. If doctors need to adjust year to year keep up with the times; if lawyers, teachers and others do likewise, why should any minister allow that he has no need for further study to improve himself.
The action of this pastor is all the more remarkable when the food is taken into a bocadillo for the audience, for the abstinence of his church and his members are under a great financial strain, and their response to his pleas in this matter of education are hearty for his pleas are rounded in workable forms. He is not a teacher, but often in a Christian way by actually making it possible for the misuse of his face to be attempted which can come only from a better educated new. And give him how of the other. The Express is of the same nature as the Real, but is as great as any other which deals with the practical. It increases more education by serving up practical services. R is practical Christian. And, if this he is not by way of the Real, he is an account of the young in the matter of education, his follows in the cloth are no less so but at much more apparent. Could he not bealm that himself that he be spared at a congregation which he now attends which the new arrival from time to time, it would happen that he could not bealm that above could not state the facts.
A group of students in a white college in the South recently cheered the plan of Mrs. Birkhume for a fair chance for the Negro boys and girls. Their applause was proof that sometimes, where they have opportunity, humanity the love of fair play overcome the teachings of prejudice which all is purely acquired and why no means natural.
The eminent editor of the Chicago Defender is sponsoring a movement for the celebration of sixty years of freedom in the United States. Probably is a fine idea when viewed from a certain angle, but all of the thinkers of the race are now coming to the point that they realize that we have been too prone in the past to cheer ourselves for our wonderful progress to the exclusion of making proper progress now. If the celebration could take the form of actually getting more co-operative movements under war and of accomplishing the practical tasks of the day, another of the "beck putting movements" which are all too common among us, let it not happen.
