Tense has been busy during the past few months with the payment of post-tax and it is worthy of note that as the result of the campaign waged by the Ipswich捐款er, Voters' League, more members of the race-qualified this year than ever before, according to the statements of those in charge of such registrations. In Dallas alone it is estimated that nearly ten thousand now are qualified for the use of the ballot and it is estimated that in the same ratio most of the other cities of the state have paid. But now that the tax is paid and the receipts are in the hands of those who should use them, the task of the League together with the better informed and courageous members of the race shown itself most plainly; and the efforts expended so far will go for naught if more energy is not put into another campaign to educate the prospective vote to the seed of using the ballot now that they have qualified for the election. It is likely true that the larger per cent of those who are entitled to vote does not ever go to the polls; and their receipts stay in their pockets unused from one year to the other. No sort of election has, up until now, challenged their attention. They still bring to the age old theory that politics is for others than them themselves. That condition must change if all of the things hoped for by tyranny and in Texas particularly, are to come—for instance, Acting Attorney in politics must be done. And it must purpose in mind of improving the conditions under which Negroes live and move in their cities and communities and well and must go to the conventions they have done. Negroes have listened to them and said they must out for a move to power than they have power than they have tried. TWO IDEAS OF ABOLISHING LYNCHING Miss Jessie Daniel Ames, head of the interfacial work in Texas sends to the press a statement containing an editorial of The Houston Post Dispatch in which it is remarked that Texas had but one lynching last year. It calls attention to the fact that press, pupil and public sentiment have united in an effort to stamp out the evil. Another release from The Federal Council of Churches in calling attention to the Race Relations Sunday service, a day of prayer against lynching, contains among other things a prayer in which the following words are found: Let us all earnestly pray to Him who is able to save us from our sins and to strengthen our aspiration for better things: That all arrogant self-assertion, all false pride of race, all prejudice and suspicion, all attitudes that make for strife may be purged away. That the Church of Christ may gain standards of alms and values more in accord with the spirit of Christ, that it may not merely preach brotherhood but may exert a mightier influence in making it a reality in our daily life. That none may need to live in fear of violence or feel unsafe in his brother's presence, but that the life and liberty of all the people may be held sacred and secure. That a deepened sense of the Divine Fatherhood and consequently of our human brotherhood may be born in all the people. That we may have fearlessness in facing intrenched wrongs and unflagging energy in striving for a social order permeated by the spirit of love and fellowship. That slight sights may appear to be two methods of combating the evil of lynching; but on second sight and thought they are found not to be so. The first is but the result of the attitude resulting from the latter. Lynching is but the result of a mental attitude toward us and the few others who fall victim to the mob. It is the outcome of habits of thought to the effect that the rights of a helpless minority need not be considered in the case of passions which have been aroused and inflamed by an appeal to the need of maintaining "Nordic supremacy." And so long has this been true that the need of maintaining the supremacy of established law is considered to be of secondary importance. And so the more fair-minded and sensible of the lynching race are learning to pray that "the church of Christ may gain standards of aims and values more in accord with the spirit of Christ so that it may not merely preach broth-whed but may exert a mightier influence in our daily lives; that none may need to live in fear of violence or feel unsafe in his brothers presence; that we may have fearlessness in facing entrenched wrong and unflagging energy in striving for a social order permeated by the spirit of love and fellowship." There can be no doubt but that attitude on the part of the smaller group of that race is showing itself in the lessening of the civil as it is observed with each succeeding year. And it may be likely that with the strengthening of resolve and the continuation of prayer it will happen that the really necessary step is taken and that the spirit of resolve may so strengthen itself that the law, final arbiter and most powerful agent in bringing about the needed change, may step in and really punish these lynchers for the murders which they commit with impunity in such days as these. Such a condition now would render much of the prayer unnecessary. ARE WE TO HAVE A Y. W. C. A? The Express is still of the opinion that people are to be judged not so much by what they say as by what they do; and it is of the opinion that their judgment of themselves should proceed along the same lines. If they have not done, if they have not succeeded as largely in other ventures as they had hoped to, there should be a definite and well conducted study of the reasons and the facts should guide them in all ventures in the future. It is reported that a special Y. W. C. A. worker is to come to the city for the purpose of helping in establishing a branch of The Ye W. C. A. here. She brings to her task a wealth of information and experience as well as a personality which is most pleasing. It is common knowledge that the attempt is being made because of the interest and financial assistance of a group of members of the other race which is genuinely hopeful that the lack of such an institution may not longer exist. The very beginning of such an attempt in the face of the history of such work among us here should be the signal for such a stock-taking on the part of the interested members of our race as has been mentioned above. There have been failures and half successes in the past which should be so definitely studied as to result in success in this venture. Of course the outsider is in no position to judge. But there is much likelihood that the willingness "to let George do it" and the unwillingness to get down to hard work and sacrifice has the cause. Dallas has never sacrificed for anything, however good. It has gone on in its divided way with more thought for individual credit and "higness" than for the common good. It has been unwilling to be rather, than to seem to be. Too much acceptance of position without conscious effort to improve the situations involved has been the case and our choice ventures have failed and we have, taking the usual easiest road out, declared that the spirit of the town was "wrong." We have not succeeded and must succeed. The spirit of helping others must be prefaced this time with the will to help ourselves into a fuller degree of effort and conscience to work rather than for the striving for place and position. This worker and those who are helping in the movement must find a different sort of cooperation among all classes of our people. Can we do it, or will we again fail? In any case, we shall be known for what we really are. Dean Mohr, assisted by other leading lights in high school and college sports has just issued a little pamphlet under title of "Colored Grid Products of Texas" which contains a history of the college conference and resume together with other comments on the game as played by both high schools and colleges. It appears to be a worthy effort and one which could have had the support of a greater number of those in charge of athletics in the many schools of the state. Its only lack is the mention of many of the other ranking teams in the various institutions here. Athletics in Texas needs to be standardized; particularly in high schools; and there can be no doubt but that this little booklet will help in bringing that to pass. It gives a vision of athletic possibilities. The fact that it was toward evening seems not to have given the disciples the least concern—they were experienced boatmen and in a few hours at most they would land on the other side. They were moving along splendid whirlpools and they were sleeping as peacefully as He did in the manger in Bethlehem. The storm increased in its dreadful fury. Like many times they look upon the quiet form of Jesus as they struggled with the waves, finally when the water began to fill the boat and they realize themselves helpless, they awaken Jesus and in great fear cry. "Teacher caretens me," everybody present enlightened it. "You are not going to go when the storms of life get too much for us. We should not push off from shore unless we are sure that we have Him on board. It is told that while a small steam packet was crossing a bay amid a heavy storm the engine suddenly stopped and for a few minutes the situation was grave. An elderly lady runned to the captain anxiously to see what was happening. The captain said, "I'm not that great that in God," "O sir it has come to it," was the life excited reply. "That is true of many professing Christians, when the storms of adverse circumstances bear heavily upon them, and all is hopeless from the viewpoint of the world and they have only God to look to for help, that it has come to a sad plight. Galilee is about 19 miles long and not more than 9 miles wide at its greatest distance. It is six hundred feet below sea level, the river Jordan passes through it entering at its northern extremity and flowing out in the South. It is surrounded by hills and mountains with deep ravines. From the hills and mountains from the snow capped mountains and making contact with the hot air of the lake region causes storms even when the sky is clear. That is true until this day. Mr. Moody says of this passage: "In the fifth chapter Mark. I call the high water mark of the gospel—there were three, persons very far gone in the sight of man. One was possessed of devil, another was possessed of an incurable disease, and the other was dead. You could not get three hard cases than that any where you could? If you were possessed of devil, another was possessed of a house, the second in a hospital for incurables, and the third in the grave; but Christ was a match for the whole Three. Don't think any man or woman is a hard case and God can't cure it." As Jesus stepped upon the shore on the other side He could not be hid—the only rest He had was what He got crossing the lake—a man at a distance imminent. Hindus hold to the same belief. Mr. Osgood says of the same cause the causes of most diseases, and the Chinese physician seeks to expell the evil spirit. For this purpose he uses a long needle which, cold or hot, clean or dry, he thrust into the part of the body affected with the disease. His purpose is to make an opening through which the spirit might descend, back, knock, or escape, and setting up infiltration and abscesses, often rendering the port forever stiff."
