Mississippi National Committeeman Charged With Political Graft IN His Home State. Following indictment on the charge of conspiring to violate the law prohibiting the sale of federal offices, Perry W. Howard Negro Republican national committeeman for Mississippi was removed from the office of special Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Justice and held in $2,500 bond for trial at Washington, D. C. on July 17. Howard charged with being implicated in a deal whereby a place in the United States marshal's force in Mississippi was given for $1,500 issued a statement declaring he was a victim of political enemies who "seek to have him crucified in the courts." Appearing before United States Commissioner Turnage, Howard waived hearing and gave bond for his appearance at Jackson for trial November 6. Howard charged that "my lily white adverbs have collated material of personal influences wage," and said he was "guilty of no wrongdoing, directly or indirectly." Howard who has fought white interference in the Republican politics of Mississippi, declared he had for 'years urged the enactment of the law requiring appointees to make an affidavit that they had not given or promised to give any consideration for their appointment.' Following the investigation in Georgia and the removal of Ben Davis, the only other Negro national committeeman, and more recently the action in Mississippi in which six. (three of whom are Negroes) charged with sale of federal or offices, it was expected that Howard's white enemies would trump up charges strong enough to bring about his re HOPE HONORED BY CANADIAN UNIVERSITY Atlanta Educator Awarded Degree of DoctOr Of Law Before Brilliant Inter national Assemblage Atlanta, Ga, July 2)--Dr John Hope, president of Morehouse College, this city, while in attendance upon the recent Congress of the World Baptist Alliance in Toronto, Canada, received from McMaster University in that city, the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. A like degree was conferred by the University upon John Thomas Forbes, principal of the Theological College of Scotland, while the degree of Doctor of Divinity moval from party office and power with the purpose in view of completely wiping out Negro influence in Republican politics in the state of Mississippi. A few days preceding this development, S A. Redmond, prominent and wealthy Jackson. Miss. attorney, his brother Dr A. M. Redmond, Ed Patton influential Negro Republican leader and Scott Hubbard. (white deputy U. M. Marshall, were indicted by a federal grand jury at Biloxi. Miss. on the charge of obtaining $1,500 for the appointment of A. P. Russell, as Marshall of the southern district. Attorney Redmond succeeded in obtaining an order from Judge Holmes transferring cases against himself, his brother and Patton from Biloxi to the Jacrson district for trial at the November term of court. Redmond presented a lengthy motion to the court in support of the indictment. "For a factional politics," to violation of the Fourteenth amendment because there were no Negroes on the Grand Jury that indicted him a situation he charged was pre-arranged. "Testimony was obtained by the Grand Jury through threats, coercion and promised immunity," Redmond charged. He declared J. C. Tyler, former United States marshal, whom he termed one of the conspirators" against him, was in the jury room at the time the indictment against himself and his co-defendants was drawn. He also declared the presence of Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebrandt assistant United States attorney general, who assisted the jury at the opening of its investigation was irregular. was conferred on nine eminent preachers and missionaries from six different countries. The imposing ceremonies were conducted at a special convocation held in Yorkminister Church, Toronto, attended by the officials and faculty of the University and by a large number of delegates to the World Baptist Congress. Of the eleven men receiving degrees. Dr. Hope had the distinction of being one of the three from America. one of the three to speak in response, and one of the two to receive the degree of LLD. Business League Meets At Helena Headed by the Hon, John L Webb, State President, many members of local and state Negro Business League attended the annnnel meeting at Helena, Arkansas Thursday and Friday. From advance reports the information is gleaned that the 1928 session far surpassed any previous session of this body, both in attendance and interest. The brilliant way of business, and professional, men, represent tastes of the trades and members of the fair sex assured a program of deep constructive import and the spirit of good will and cooperation on the part of the leading white officials and citizens of Helena together with travail and unbounced hospitability of the Colored people of the city, contributed much to the success of the annual meeting. New Negro Must Carry On. The 19th Annual Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is in session in Los Angeles. In point of service and length of service this Association has functioned longer than any other of its kind organized to foster the political, civil and social rights of colored people. That its usefulness has been valuable to the race and the nation is true: that it has been hampered, circumscribed in its endeavors as much by the disinterestedness of the people it aims to help as much as by the opposition it has encountered from its enemies is also true. Sash an organization should and with the help of a new good white friends has maintained it. It is up to the "New Negro" he wants to safe-guard his own rights and those of his children to support it now. If he fails to do this he will write himself down as a quitter and will have to disavow his claims to the vaunted superiority he proclaims and professes. It is a great organization and must live. It is up to the self-styled "New Negro", who has hands, to keep it alive and make it more effective. Will Attempt To Dethrone Bob Chnrch. The Lily whites and Democrats have succeeded so well in their attacks upon Ben Davis of Alabama and Perry Howard and the Redmond brothers of Miss that the whites of Tennessee led and urged by the Memphis Commercial Appeal are demanding an investigation of affairs in the state of Tennessee, particularly as affect Robt R. (Bob) Church, the Negro Republican leader who has been one of the most powerful factors in Tennessee politics, the end in view being to bring about the downfall of Church through political elimination. This undercover work in the South has been going on for some time—the building up of strong conspiracies and frameups to completely eliminate all forms of Negro power and influence from Southern politics. An effort against Church was made preceasing the Kansas City convention and once begun, the fight to depose the strong Negro leader is to be pushed to conclusion. Near Texarkana on July 10 occurred the death of an age colored woman, familiarly known as Aunt Celia Canada. She has reached the age of 88 years and was the mother of 10 children nine of whom are living. She leaves 150 grandchildren and his great grandchildren, making a sound numbers 261 souls. She was a slave in Giles county Tenn. and came to Arkansas shortly after the Civil war. She and her husband bought a soil hill farm seven miles from Texarkana and after his death several years ago, she settled to live on the small farm until her own death. FAMOUS TEXAS TURNS DEMOCRAT. ("Gooseneck Bill" McDoual, colored old-line Republican leaders who were deated by the Lily white Republican of the Lone Star State and chose contesting delegation died to gain recognition at the Kansas City convention, have deceived war on the Republican party with which they have once alliated during the past 50 or 6 years and have announced the intention to vote for the Democrat nominees, Governor Smith and Senator Robinson. We have announced that 250,000 members of the anti-Hoover Republican faction would vote in the Republican nominee with the Negro getting aenty of "hell and big hivater" in the South, no number of Negroes of proportionate importance is likely to see things the way. Fumber wh The colored residents of Jefferson county are experiencing a political awakening and as a result thereof have been paying their poll taxes and becoming qualified voters. The file filed on July 17, showed that Jefferson county now has 9,406 qualified voters and of this number more than one-half are N-ones. As elsewhere, colored residents of Jefferson county are learning that the ballot is a weapon of defense. Inter-Denominational Ministers Alliance. The Interdenominational Ministers' Alliance met at 10:30 A.M. and, after devotion, was called to order by the vice president, Rev. R. S. Shorty, the president decided that he would be a floor member for the day. The Order of the Day-the first in study of character sketches of Peter-was a discussion led by the Rev. J. M. B. Michelle on "Peter become a Disciple". The presentation was edifying, instructive and showed the results of careful research. The general discussion which followed contained many illuminating points also. Next Monday "Peter at leave the city news" contained his month's vacation. As the Alliance had so many calls for financial assistance from persons, apparently in dire need, it decided to plan a popular entertainment for the purpose of creating a Charity Fund within its own treasury to meet such cases. Be removing a seal plate from a rear wall of the county jail, three Negro prisoners, Isaac Haynie, Palton Robinson, and Howard McFarland made their escape Thursday night. After sawing bolts and removing the plates, the prisoners lag their way to liberty through a solid brick wall. They are said to have helped themselves to wearing apparel of other prisoners who were asleep. Isaac Haynie was being held for the brutal mur ler of an aget colored man, Uncle Joe Williams who resided on the Shady Grove road, near the banks or the Oachachi river. Patton Robinson, 15 year old youth was being held for his confessed robbery of the Wilson Packing Co plant and the Ho Hot Springs Will Dress In Gala Attire Hot Springs is soon to be dressed in gala attire for the ceremonies attending notification of Democratic Vice Presidentia Candidate, Senator Joseph T Robinson of Arkansas. Central, Ouachita, Malvern, Perk, Whittington, Benton, and Broadway are to be profusely decorated in red white and blue and seven triumphal arches are to be built at chrsen points. The Home Decorating Co. which had charge of the decorations at the Kansas City Convention, will do the work in Hot Springs. In addition to famous Democrat leaders from all sections, fully 25,000 visitors, 27 bands, soldiers, Boy Scouts and other organizations are to participate in the memorable event which will take place in late August or early September. J. B. Bryant Dead Hot Springs loses anotherold and will known citizen in the death of Mr. Jesse B. Bryant & his on home Gulpha St. Thursday. Deceased for years, followed the vocation of huckster and was a familiar figure to local housewives. He was an ardent member and officer of the Roanoke Past's Church and was known as a man who always took a modest but active interest in the affairs which concerned his race. The funeral will be held at Roanoke on Monday at 2 p.m. At the request of relatives the Rev. J. W. Goldsby who attended the funeral of the wife of the deceased, is to die'iver the funeral sermon on next Monday. 30th Year of Service Number 25 Immates from County Jail. Removed While mates Slept. Howard Mc Farland was being held on 3 months' sentence on the chaiangang, on a charge of attempt to assault McFarland is alleged to have written a note to a white woman employee at Paul's Cafe where both of them were formerly employed. It is claimed that he was being held in the County instead of City jail because threats had been made to do him bodily harm. Up to 3 p. m. Friday no trace of the escaped prisoners had been found, but their capture is expected to take place at any time as Hot Springs is so located that escape, except by aeroplane is practically a matter of inn possibility. Honors Father's Birthday. The Rev Father D. E. Johnson, Jr., son of Father and Mrs. D. Day. Father Johnson, known in this state and to a number of local residents. In former years he served in the priesthood in this Episcopal diocese and is now preparing to give up his work at Cairo, Ill., to accept the charge at Springfield but recently resigned by his father, who is now serving St. Mary's of this city. Father Johnson Jr. in addition to being a man of scholarly attainments, is a very able and widely known musician. His friends in the state rejoice in the successor which have rewarded his labors Mrs. Nina Owens. The funeral of Mrs. Nina Owens was held on July 6th. at the home of her sister, Mrs. Bell Moss of 105 Vine St. and was attended by many former friends of the deceased who knew her during her former residence in Hot Springs. The family is very grateful for the kindness of friends, and thank the pastor, Rev. Wyatt, who was a sisted by Rev. Stout, for their consoling words, and greatly a preciated the sympathetic service so splendidly given by Undertaker R. H. Gordon. The deceased left a sister, two nieces, a brother, and a host of friends to mourn her death. Some Negroes seem to get a much satisfaction out of acting such as white folks get for actually doing that way. The election of Senator Curtis will put a little "color" in the White House. A thousand dollars on wheels is a mighty pretty thing to have, but a thousand dollars or so on a choice space of ground is not so ugly. Think about it. Brother H. In brick, woo and stone, Mr. Brooks has supervised the erection of various structures of which the race feels justly proud. You can hear them say "Brooks can build it and it will be built right." He is a modern builder and his work is abreast with the times. His record and reputation is a big asset to race building contractors. Dr. E. A Kendall, Supreme President W. O. U., Dr. John E. The Rainbow Rink will be open every afternoon and evening if the attendance warrants. Even in "statemanship" there seems to be but few Southerners with minds big and broad enough to call fourth expressions on the broader phases of American life, national and international. Instead of appealing to the North the higher moral sense of their fellow men, they appeal to their ignorance and intolerance and not only hurt the Negro thereby, but hinder the white man by arousing the base passions of prejudice and hate when issues could be discussed along saner lines. Leaving East, the North and the West to discuss the tariff, farm relief, prohibition, internicine and foreign policies and relations, the South is having its old favorite attack of the "nigger blues" and certainly can snip off one-horse power white journal in the South is joining in the chorus and in Hot Springs there is no exception. Pretending sometime ago that they could not swallow the Hon. Al Smith because of his religious views, the South is now ready to swallow the New York Governor (and as Mr. Heflin says) the Pope, of Rome. Holding up hands in horror of Tammany, they are now prepared to swallow this political cat, including hide and tallow. What a great thing for the United States that these two Vice Presidents succeeding to the Presidency were such able and enlighten men. Our noninees for vice president always should be men whom we would have faith in as our chief executive of the nation. This gives us serious thought concern. WE, is peasant Negro citizens of this country. It is alright to extol the virtues of Governor AJ Smith and even his running mate Senator Joseph T. Robinson, but the Negro must look behind these men and consider the patty which the represent and note how the tabid Southerners are already waving the dirty shirt of domination and stirring up racial animities. Now suppose at Smith—great and good man—does become president and then suppose the Beavers. At should die. There's no telling, he mortal. Mr. Robinson from Arkansas—another good man—would succeed to the presidency and the Democrats would be in power. A president from the South would mean a bowling calamity to the Negroes in this country.
