II. HAITI Cune CUNEY, MASTER P GENERATION I AND NEW YO Special to the Informer. New York City - Henry Ernest Curley, master politician, who for more than a generation wielded a quiet but potent influence in politics, and who until recently was political editor of the New York News, died quite suddenly early morning or Sun in Washington. The Sunday previous he had left the home of his friend, James J. Ferribe, with whom he had lived for five years, on route to Washington saying that he wold visit for a week his older brother Ernest, who was born in New York and had sudden death have not yet reached New York. The first message reached telegram from his nephew, Phil Curley saying that Ernest Curley had died Sunday night, and asking Alderman Harris to forward the address of a friend to his brother. Mr. Ferribe explained that the death was in all probability that of the New Yorker older brother. Mr. Ferribe on Tuesday night, to verify the conflicting reports, called up the Whitehall Hotel by long distance, and told that the death was that of his friend. Notable Political Career. Henry Ernest Cuney was born in Galveston, Texas, sixty-four years ago of distinguished parentage on his father's side. He and were political leaders in the Lone Star State, being State and United States officials. His early education there was at the University. ATTENDED BISHOPS' COUNCIL Meerser, W. L. M. Cepy and Ira Franklin, business manager and traveling representative, respectively, of the Madame N. A. Franklin Mr. Co. Visits Dallas, Dallas North Texas point week, make the janker overland. While away they distributed quite a bit of advertising matter, in the shape of beautiful wall calendars, the product of the Webster Bison's Council A. M. E. Bison's Council in Dallas. These calendars are artistically got up and printed in colors of beauty called at the down town beauty park of Madame N. A. Franklin, 80% RALLY TO SOCIAL SERVICE DRIVE! The announcement and appeal of the office of department of the Social Service Bureau, which appeared in the last week's issue of The Informer, is a worthy cause and our people should respond to it. This department looks after those in need and sore distress and its ministrations and philanthropies are not restricted to color nor creed. The work among the colored contingent is in the immediate hands of the attentive nurses, the special foral aid and assistance must not fall upon deaf ears. Mr. Julius White has charge of the attentive drive and expects to make a splendid showing. The Informer hopes that this humanitarian appeal will fall upon responsive care and our group here and the dealred goal attained. sent to Pittsburg. When quite a youth he went to Washington, and lived there for thirty years, until he came to New York nearly twenty years ago and citizenship and career here. At Washington University, the judicial judgment won him instant recognition, and he became the political confidant of such statesmen as President Garfield, James G. Blaine and President Harrison. He was the political mentor for his better-known lawyer, the national Committeeman from Texas, and father of Mr. Maud Cuney (McKinley) Hare. Reverses caused him to leave his friends and family in Washington and come to New York. In a smaller circle here he gained in Washington and come to New York. He was a close friend of the late Moses M. McKee, of Leader Valentin Hahn, Judge John B. Davies, John R. McNeel and Robert S. Conklin. As such he played a vital part in Harlem political workers and in the nomination of George W. Harris for alderman. Health Precious for Long Time. For the last few years his health has steadily failed him, being intermittently under the care of Dr. W. Jeson Hoage and Caucasian physicians. He died alone from a stroke of apoplexy, it seems, in the hotel. He left as relatives besides those already named, a married sister in Chicago, two brothers in Washington and many nephews and nieces. His funeral ceremony was at 1 p. m. yesterday in Washington. ILLINOIS LEADER PRESENTS SEVERAL MESSAGES IN HOUSE (Bc. by the Associated Negro Press.) (Bicago. — Representative Adelbert Roberts, colored, has presented a resolution to the Illinois legislature calling upon the members of congress of house bill 14,979, having as its object and purpose the assurance to persecute and punish the criminals for the state equal protection of the laws and to punish the crime of lynching. Representative Roberts has also proposed a resolution to persons for the destruction of property and inflicting injury to persons, to mite or other deadly instrument or implement. Roberts aims to alleviate the condition brought about by the indiscriminate bombing of property in Chicago by more years or more. Recently the bombings were so extensive, affecting whites as well as colored, and no one is ever caught up in the bombings and all the various departments of government are denouncing the outrages and seeking the criminals and GRAND CHURCH OPENING The grand opening exercises of the Berech Church of Seventh Day Adventists, Dowling and Cahoun, will begin on Friday, March 26. Montgomery, Ala.-D. Dr. Robert R Moton, principal of Tuskegee Institute, passed through here this week en route from St. Augustine, Fla., to New York to participate in a conference with President-elect Harding. When asked concerning the conference, Dr. Moton said: "The interview had no political significance. In company with some representative Southern white men, I went to tell Mr. Harding something about the operation, which has been organized in the South and which is gaining strength every day. Mr. Harding expressed himself as being in warmest sympathy with the work of the interracial commission, which is helping to bring about understanding and help to resolve the issues of the members of the party were very much impressed with the president's earnestness and sincerity." It is understood that after Dr. Moton and members of the party had spoken frankly concerning some of the hands that were involved between the races in the South, and the efforts which represent white and colored people are putting forth to remove them, Mr. Harding plunged freely into the discussion and expressed his appreciation of the remarkable advancement which the Negro has achieved in the South, as well as his desire to help and encourage this progress. The Southern white men who accompanied Dr. Moton were Dr. W. W. Alexander of the interracial commission, Atlanta, Ga.; Dr. M. Abbie Jones, pastor of Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Los Angeles, Eagan, banker and manufacturer, Atlanta, Ga., and Dr. T. W. Tooler, J.P. Hepls-Skopes fund, New York City. The colored members of the party in addition to Dr. Moton, were Warin Logan, treasurer, to the principal, the secretary of the principal, Tuskegee Institute. MILLER PREDICTS RACE CONGRESSMEN FROM THREE CITIES MILLER PREDICTS RACE CONGRESSMEN FROM THREE CITIES (By the Associated Negro Press.) New York City - In a recent address here, Dean Keller Miller of the Junior College of Howard University predicted that within six years there will be Negro representatives from New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago in congress. This will be one of the political results of the migration of some 600,000 blacks to the last decade. He read census statistics showing the Negro population in New York to be 175,000, in Philadelphia 134,000, in Washington and Chicago 109,000 each. "From these concentrations there will be a large number of blackness," he added. "You will find that these communities will be sending representatives to city councils and state legislatures, and sending representatives to the congress of the United States. It is safe to predict that with our efforts there will be a Negro congressman in Philadelphia and one from Chicago. The population is sufficiently large to come under requirements of congress district." PRESIDENT HARDING WILL BE PRESIDENT OF ALL THE PEOPLE ACCORDING TO NEWS AGENCY President Harding is surrounding himself with "master minds" and Colored Americans are looking carefully into this list to see "Who's Who." For example, they know that Congressman Hassam Sleep of Virginia, who is getting high in party, is one of the most knowledgeable tendencies. He is a statement that must be watched closely, he represents an element gaining CAUCASIAN EDITOR SEES AMALGAMATION AS FINAL OUTCOME CAUCASIAN EDITOR SEES AMALGAMATION AS FINAL OUTCOME (By the Associated Negro Press.) (By the Associated Negro Press.) Chicago — Arthur Brishue, the well-known editor and philosopher, is known for his final decision to be the final outcome of all racial difficulties, and that the last great race will be white, which he, claims, should satisfy everyone. His opinion is: rule the earth, because they are a little near to civilization than the other colors of man, nor yellow men, nor black men. Alas that once owned Japan, are yellow and brown will disappear through their later incarrations in the world, just as it suits the white ruler now to be rid of the red hair, projecting its teeth that once marked them all. influence in the South, an element dangerous to the Colored American's welfare—incidentally, he is on the committee of reorganization in the people who are on Slimp, and if former President Taft, and Vice President Coolidge can gather the feeling of the people in no uncertain terms, so can Slimp, and all whom he represents. Harry M. Daughtry of Ohio, and William H. Hayes of Indiana will be the politician responsible for administration with such men as Senator McCormick of Illinois, Senator Watson of Indiana, Senator New of the same state and Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania, being an active part of the inner circle. These men know Colored people, and they will be the president of people will not hesitate for one minute to take up with them all the big subjects of the day, and it is fair to say they will be given respectful hearing. Few Colored leaders, regardless of what they have known of President Lincoln, will be the privilege of "getting to the President" personally. This will be no indication of his lack of interest, but it will be physically impossible for him to see everyone, therefore "big things" must be accomplished through representation. The president's secretary, will be available to a larger number, and will be a good second, as he is a splendid type of American manhood. President-elect Harding has a comprehensive knowledge of the Negro his problems, his weaknesses, his many weaknesses, and his President-elect is not only a student of a long newspaper experience, but he will enter the office as President with the largest personal acquaintance of race leaders that any president would have. With the new administration in power, the American Negroes are entering into a new era of progress. It will not be "race horse" progress, but it will be certain and lasting; it may be beset with disappointments and even distressing perils, but a new day will dawn March Fourth. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1921. DEPARTMENT STORE GREATLY NEEDED. From time to time The Informer has, editorially, called attention to the urgent need of a department store owned and operated by our people in Houston. The reasons for launching and operating this store are so obvious that it is hardly necessary to mention same here. Self-preservation, which is nature's primal statute, makes it almost imperative upon us to do in a mercantile way what the other great races of the world would have done in this line. Self-respect should force us to establish and operate all the various business institutions whose wares we need and purchase from time to time. It is now getting to the place where merchants of other races are not anxious for the colored race's patronage and not a few of these merchants are holding membership in "mysterious and invisible orders," whose avowed purpose is to "keep the nigger in his place." As long as we continue to do as we are now doing we are simply fattening frogs for snakes and we are tightening the chain around our own necks. There are some merchants of other races who desire, appreciate and advertise for colored patronage; these men and firms deserve our support. BUT COLORED PEOPLE SHOULD AND MUST REFUSE TO PURCHASE GOODS FROM ANY STORE THAT REFUSES TO ADVERTISE IN A COLORED NEWSPAPER. Houston has in the neighborhood of 40,000 colored citizens, leading all other Texas cities in colored population, and they spend a huge sum weekly, monthly and annually with the local stores. Let us figure on their shoe bill first: These 40,000 people spend at least $8 per year for shoes, making our annual shoe bill amount to $320,000, a most conservative figure. These 40,000 people eat on an average of at least $10 worth of groceries per annum and here we have an annual expenditure of $400,000 for groceries, conservatively estimated. For clothing these 40,000 people spend at least $20 per year, giving the huge figure of $800,000 each year for clothes, another conservative estimation. This staggering amount of $1,520,000 does not include hardware, furniture, drugs and other necessities and luxuries, which will probably exceed the $2,500,000 mark, annually. Only a small amount of this money goes to colored business men, for our race has not embarked in these lines to any appreciable extent. Our people have sufficient money lying idle in the local banks to launch a mercantile establishment of mammoth proportions—a real department store where all our necessities could be purchased under one roof and the money reinstating to the race, if some one with the means, ability and nerve would take the initiative in the movement. This is a day of big things and in other parts of the country colored Americans have grasped the spirit of the new day and are planning and doing things on a large scale; in some instances their projects are so suspendous that they are startling, to say the least. Do the colored citizens of Houston, some of the best fitted and qualified of our group in the country, mean to say to the world that the colored people of Houston are back numbers when it comes to putting over big propositions for the race's benefit and promotion? How long are we going to see our wives, mothers, daughters and sisters insulted, browbeaten and often manhandled in stores operated and owned by other racial groups, whose maintenance we make possible by our continued support and patronage, despite such cruel acts that would drive any other race under the sun away from said stores but ours? Races get recognition in proportion as they prove their mettle and demonstrate their ability to do what other races have done from all angles. AMON YOUNG Jerusalem REV. G. PORTER Sunday school was Supt. Walter Harris, vice president at A. m. a. Wright presided over the Lord, What Wilt The Being one of the planks he was able to quote a half century back. at 5:30, opened by Brown, with a glorious night pastor turned to to covenant. Sister Susan helped the school to children to attend the Thursday evening. Sister urges young and old girls on a band hand dance night. The choir of Sisters E. N. Porter was Houston is a fertile field for a big department store operated and owned by our people and The Informer will preach on this subject like the new pastor of a small town church. This pastor took for his first text "Ye must be born again," preaching an able sermon that morning. At night he repeated the sermon and the following Sunday repeated the same dose twice. The deacons held a conference with him after the night service and informed the new pastor that they had not called him to preach the same sermon at every service. The pastor replied that he would preach that same text until the members of the church had become regenerated. Let the colored citizens of Houston get busy and remove some of the causes for insults by launching a department store or let's stop whining and complaining when our women are beaten up and hurled bodily out of some of our local stores operated by other races for their own people. The man who will not provide for his own household is worse than an infidel and The Informer takes the position that such business enterprises make provisions for our household and will do much to remove some prejudice from business. Who'll start the project? EVANGELICAL-"HARMONY" MEETING That evangelical "get-together" meeting held at Antioch Baptist Church last Friday night did not get very far in the latter respect and whatever "good feeling" might have been created by the first part of the program, it was certainly dislodged when the "harmonious" end was reached. The meeting was the suggestion of Rev. J. W. Bailey, a colored divine of Marshall, Texas, who is engaged in evangelical work throughout the country in the Baptist ranks. They had invited the white ministers of the city to be present, and, as usual, gave their white "brethren" the chief place on the evening's program; but before the meeting had received the benediction the white preachers present commended and praised the very "mysterious and invisible order" that the meeting was called to denounce and seek its eradication from this community. One of these "Christian" reverends even admitted publicly (and in the pulp at that) that he knew who placed the Ku Klux Klan "proclamation" on the Baptist Sanitarium (white) and then stated that "colored people who obey the law and do right need have no fear for the Ku Klux Klan," and a lot of such rot and bosh. The kind of "dope" issued out to that colored congregation by these supposed Christian leaders proved conclusively that they and all their are in hearty accord and sympathy with such a clandestine order and it would not surprise The Informer if these "brethren" do not hold membership in said "organization." The Great Teacher said that "Men love darkness because their deeds are evil." Going further: Those who approve of evil deeds committed under the shade of night by self-appointed guardians of the public weal and welfare are worse enemies to America than the most trusted agent of the Hohenzollern during the late martial holocaust. Those who are conversant with conditions in the South will not become unduly alarmed or excited in the stand taken by the local white ministers, for just such an attitude on all great inter-racial issues by these "Christian" dignitaries has been a potent factor in fomenting and propagating racial strife, hatred, antipathy and prejudice in Dixie; while many of them have not only dismissed church services in order that their congregation might witness and participate in a lynching bee, but scores of them have been ring-leaders in mobs and other bands of anarchists that have wrought havoc in certain benighted and heathen sections of America. This modern day species of Christianity is employed chiefly by its devotees and adherents as a cloak to shield their nefarious and sinful acts and practices, and if given an opportunity these same devotees and adherents will show their stripe and thereby bring further reproach and stigma upon the earth's greatest democratic religion. When it is borne in mind that the "revived" klan is the product of a white Methodist minister and that one of the colored race's greatest foes was a defunct white Baptist preacher, the remarks and position of those two "good brethren" at Antioch last Friday night show that they are still in fine form and working in midseason fashion. To Prof. W. L. Davis The Informer dofs its journalistic skype for his able defense of his race and his vitriolic invective against all underhand, insidious and infernal orders and programs that are calculated to disrupt the amicable relations between the two races and precipitate an ugly and embarrassing situation. Our colored pastors and leaders should learn a lesson from the Friday night "fizzle" and stop trying to stage the "get-together" conferences, for they all generally pan out like the local affair and our people lose faith in the final victory of right over wrong. Let's worship under our own vine and fig tree; teach our people to get-together, stick together and die together; teach humility, AMONG THE CHURCHES YOU ARE WELCOME Jerusalem Baptist. REV. G. PORTER, Pastor. Sunday school was conducted by Supt. Walter Harris, with good attendance. At 14 a.m. service Iv. R. Wright prescheduled a bable sermon on "Lord, What Wilt You Have Me Do?" Behzat one of the pioneer ministers to Bishop and pastor and members went to Liberty Baptist Church and from there to Rev. Albert Ahern, of the Newbury Baptist Church, at 5:30, opened by President John Brown, with a glorious lesson. At night pastor turned the church over to covenant. Sister V. Newberry billed manmade gifts all little children to help them attend the church at 4:30 Thursday evening. Sister N. D. Brown urges young and old people to attend the church at 4:30 Thursday evening. The choir rejoices to have Sisters E. N. Porter, Mattie Belle Witt, Mary Foulds, meets with them Sisters H. Robinson, Judkina—but not docility and that Christianity makes men brave, honest, law-abiding, peaceful and sober-minded, rather than cowardly, dishonest, criminal, vicious, trouble-breeding and trouble-hunting. It is necessary for "Christian" men to masquerade under sheets, hoods, etc., during the nocturnal hours in the name of Christianity and civilization to attempt to terrorize and intimidate their fellow-men and brothers in Christ, then Christianity is a miserable and rank failure and ready to be consigned to the scrap pile forever and anon. THE CRYING SHAME OF AMERICA The Informer is in receipt of two pamphlets from the publicity department of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, New York City, entitled "An American Lynching," and "A Ten Year Fight Against Lynching." "An American Lynching," is the story of the burning at the stake of Henry Lowry, a colored American, at Nodena, Arkansas, January 26, as chronicled in the white daily newspapers of that vicinity. The association makes no comments upon the gruesome crime and brutal orgy as staged by these Huns of America, the newspaper accounts being reproduced by facsimile. This revolting and barbaric stunt, judging from the news items appearing in the Memphis, Tenn., daily white newspapers, was suggested by the headlines in several editions of these "democratic" sheets. This black man had not committed the "unmentionable crime," but was accused of having slain a white man and woman on a plantation in the Razorback state. He was captured in El Paso, Texas, and carried through Mississippi, the worst place this side of hell (throwing Georgia and parts of Texas in for good measure) and by so doing the prisoner was intentionally handed over to a mob of "boches" by the officers (2) of the law, and the cruel pastime pulled off. The details of the disgraceful and savage stunt were published in the newspapers at the time and while the barrical deed is perhaps as dead as Dodo or Hector, the heinousness of the crime should be brought home to the American citizens who believe in law and order and a civilization that is civilized and Christianized. If America has a real conscience, such acts of barbarism and anarchy should be suppressed and this republic made and maintained safe for the humbleest citizen. If such horrible atrocities are to be committed, condoned and encouraged in this country, then America is in for some perilous days. Since public sentiment in the South favors mob violence when the victim is a colored citizen, it remains for congress to enact legislation that will bring lynching under the pate of federal jurisdiction. Did you ever see a hog eat slop? Invariably he would eat so much that he was forced to grunt and wallow to get some ease. He would stand in the trough and eat his fool head off. Lest you forget, we have some human hogs. They want everything for themselves and haven't sense enough to know when they have a plenty. Some people are hogs when it comes to eating. They eat so much and crowd their stomachs with such mixtures that acute indigestion or indigestion in some form is their unhappy lot. Some folks are financial hogs, grabbing after every kopeck they see and all they imagine they see. The other fellow can go to Helena as far as they are concerned. They are for self only. Some people are hogs after honors, which can neither fill an empty stomach nor a financially embarrassed purse. They seek all the big positions on all programs and are always desirous of having their mugs stuck up in some newspaper. Some are hogs with the ego, being possessed to such an extent that it is a wonder to us that they do not burst. Others are hoggish about their looks and think that the good Lord consumed all of His precious time moulding and making them. Others are drinking hogs despite the high price of "bootleg" liquor and "moonshine," and of all the swine this is the most despicable and disgusting. It is very seldom that people act the part of a hog when something wholesome or worth while is to be eaten or done. Hogs show their stripes when eating slop and mankind, more or less, is akin to the swine family. Ponder on these things, as there are other ways that you can be a hog. Going beyond the bounds of reason and propriety in any way, shape, form or fashion puts one in the hog class. MRS. HARRY J. EDWARDS, Reporter. St. John Baptist. (Dowling Street) REV. H. R. To avoid this uncalled for humiliation and unnecessary embarrassment, peruse the columns of your colored newspapers and unless you see business places advertising with some degree of regularity and consistency in your papers, stay out of those stores and urge your friends to do likewise, and appreciate the race's patronage will appreciate in colored newspapers, and when they do not advertise in papers published by our racial group, it is primal face evidence that your patronage is not wanted, and it is up to us to make ourselves conspicuous by our absence. Then, too, don't purchase your merchandise in these "holes in the walls" 24x24 joints, who, like the Dead Sea, take in everything and give out nothing. The time has arrived for the colored people to have some racial self-respect and stop spending their money with merchants who are base ingrates and read the advertisements in all issues of your race newspapers and then practice the doctrine of business reckicty by patronizing only those merchants and business institutions that do not care for race. It is a serious reflection upon our race to continue to enrich men who do not care a rap for nor appreciate our trade, and if we would only employ a little gray and make a white businessman, these phases, even if they are in the shape of bargains, and go elsewhere and throw our support to those merchants who throw some of their support to our race's enterprises, we will be able to that which will have a three-fold blessing. SOCIAL SERVICE BUREAU PUTS ON A COLORED DRIVE The Social Service Bureau contributes to the needs of our social life as no other organization does under the direct supervision of our municipality. The bureau maintains the Bethlehem Settlement with its kindergarten and pays part of the salary of the corps who visit our schools, examine our children, thereby safeguarding their health. It has become our duty to assist in fostering causes which have for their end the relief of the unfortunate.
