HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1923
TRUTH, IN FUTURE AS IN PAST WILL FINALLY TRIUMPH OVER WRONG, HARDEWAY DECLARES
GRAND MASTER BLEDSOE DUE AT ST. JAMES M. E. CHURCH TONIGHT; HOUSTON PUBLIC IS INVITED
According to Mr. Perry Mack, only colored member of the present Harris County grand jury and active force in local U. B. F. circles, Hon. W. F. Bledsoe of Marshall, grand master of this order, will talk to the business, professional and other members of the race at St. James M. E. Church, Correns Andres and Wilson Streets, Friday (tonight), February 16. The program will begin at 8 p. m.
This visit of Grand Master Bledsoe is not in the interest of the order as much as in the interest and welfare of the colored citizenry of Houston, and since Mr. Bledsoe has a special message and perhaps proposition to put up to our people, it is hoped that the andoritium of the church will be packed on this occasion. Mr. Bledsoe has a special message, which will only serve an appetizer to the main event of the proposition. Thus for the grand master has not divulged the nature of his proposition, but speculation is rife that he has something up his sleeve that Houston can not afford to lose by default.
Especially the business and professional men and women of the city invited to be present, as well as all members of the colored group interested in racial program, advancement and solidarity. Let's give the "chief" a rounder welcome and ovation.
Regarding the colored Y. M. C. A. I. of the city, the officers and members of the various church and the officers and members of the various secret orders are not a non-member, should have the audacity, and should be well-versed in the language.

The Bargain Basement department, operated by Foley Brothers Dry Goods Company, is a new departure in merchant operations. Foley brothers popular for mecchars thirty shopper and those in quest of honest-to-goodness bargains.

The last two months this store has been under pressure. In the Informer, not because of the "cheap" goods in the generally accepted use of that term, but to not acquaint the colored burger with the "cheap" goods in the basement store and offered in their basement store and through a race publicity to visit and take advantage of the real offer. Jericho is noted as the stronghold of the Canaanites, which was miraculously saved in response to their faith (Josh. 6), and also for the faith of Rahab, which saved her from destruction (Josh. 11). H. Zacchaeus seeking Jesus (vv. 2-4). 2. His Object (v. 3). He sought to see Jesus. Though perhaps prompted by curiousness, he sought Jesus. He doubtless had heard of Jesus' kind treatment of publicans, so was prompted to see what kind of
2. His Difficulties (v. 2, 3). (1) His infamous business (v. 2). He was a tax collector of the Roman government such an office under the hated Romans would make him extremely unpunished, that he had practiced extinction in collecting the taxes. (2) His shortness of stature (v. 3). He was too small to ride a horse, no doubt being hated by the people they thrust him aside, no doubt with taunts and curses, but no longer can be前 before the multitude and climbed up into a tree. What he lacked in stature he was determined should be his height, no doubt in places placed before him he brushed aside and those he could not brush aside he climbed over, because he had to climb up the tree. Zachaeus' legs were too short to be seen by Jews they were long enough to climb the tree. He could climb the tree. It was somewhat undignified for him to climb the tree, but his soul was strong enough that he can cast his pride of the winds.
II. Jesus Finding Zacchaeus (vv. 11)
While Zacchaeus was trying to see Jesus, Jesus was looking for him. This is always the case. When Jesus saw him from the tree and declared his intention to go home with him, Zacchaeus got more than he expected. Jesus did not die and dealt accordingly with him. Zacchaeus, Jesus knew his heart desire and dealt accordingly with him. He shall be found of Him. How wonderful his grace, that regardless of one's desire, a friend and enter into fellowship with him. Zacchaeus quickly responds down and with joy received Jesus.
IV. Zacchaeus Conversion (vv. 16)
His conversion was sudden and thorough. He was converted before he was born, and does not have Jesus long to come.

It is absolutely no necessity day funerals and if the colored m not place a bat on such, the city ordinance, prohibiting such dem legislation can be made to encourage imical to public health and on the act, in the event the ministers against Sunday funerals.
HOUSTON SHOULD FOLLOW SUIT.
The city health officer of Tampa, Fla., recently issued a public address to the colored preachers and teachers of that city, in which he deplored the practice of staging big Sunday funerals and urged the colored fraternal leaders to abandon the old policy. This request should also be made in Houston, for our race has placed funerals in the category with celebrations and circuses, holding the dead for days to "pull off" a big Sunday funeral, and the colored preachers and other accoutrements; to say nothing of lengthy and tiresome ceremonies by these secret fraternities both at the home, church and cemetery. In several cities the colored ministers have gone on record as opposing the "Sunday funerals," and The Informer would like to see the colored ministry of Houston take a similar stand. We have known of instances where persons have died on Sunday evening or night and their remains were held over until the following Sunday afternoon to give the lodges a chance to show off on dress parade. We have bereaved relatives of the deceased will not consent to anything other than a "special" Sunday funeral and such spectacles and practices have become both disgusting and disheartening. There is absolutely no necessity for "staging" these big Sunday funerals and if the colored ministers and local lodge heads do not place a bait on such, the city should pass and enforce an ordinance, prohibiting such demonstrations on Sunday, if such legislation can be made to hold water, legally. Such crowds that congregate at these Sunday funerals are inimical to public health and on these ground the city council could accept and on these grounds refuse to take a well-defined stand against Sunday funerals.

HORSE RACING TERMS
OFTEN WRONGLY USED
Expressions Relating to Turf Receive Rough Usage.
Purses Differs From Stakes in Many Ways, Chief of Which is That Its Amount is Always Fixed and is Definite.
Old and well-defined term relating to the turf are receiving some rough usage these days in connection with horse racing and horse shows, written in the form: the earliest dawn of organized racing the term stake, for example, has been used to designate a race for which the prize is awarded. The term nominator, conributed by the nominator, all of which belongs to the winner or the loser of the race, carries and ignorant racemen apply the term to races which are not stakes but purses. A purses differ from stakes in that its amount is always fixed and definite, while a stake is always of many horses entered upon the number of horses entered.
In a purse race the association or other promoter gives it up a certain amount usually with the provision that an entrance fee shall be paid for the privilege of competing. In such a race all the pursues must be paid to the promoter. If it amounts to more than the value of the purse the pursues is his, free and clear of any claim on the pursues. The pursues have been known where this surplus amounts to hundreds and even thousands of dollars. If on the other hand, the enquiries value of the purse the promoter must make up the difference. He alone takes the risk, and the gain or loss is his.
In a stake race he merely holds the entrance money in trust for the submarine in order to win the race in full at the conclusion of the race. Sometimes, as in the May day stake for two-year-old trotters at Lezard's, he must retain the value of the stake. In that case he is the loser if the subscriptions are on the other hand, the entrance money exceeds the guaranteed amount; he cannot retain the surplus, as in a purse case. In the Kentucky Lexington the Kentucky Trekking Horse Breeders' association guaranteed $10,000. The subscriptions assumed to $12,250. If it had been a purse race the extra $2,500 would have gone to the surplusms went to the winner.

The Negro business man has a claim on your trade. His claim is backed by numerous reasons. We are teaching the race by example, confidence in themselves that they can manage things.
We are proving that no field of endeavor is closed against thousands who try. That the way to learn to sell goods is the side of the counter the cash register opens on.
We claim your business by the fact that it is a school of learning for Negro boys and girls.
We claim your business because—Oh! This is all the space I have—I must stop.
