YES, WE HAVE NO JITNEYS! FINAL EDITION VOL. V. CHICAGO NEGRO ANNOUNCES FOR CONGRESS SEAT Chicago, Ill.—The first hat to be flung into the ring in the fight to represent the First District of Illinois in Congress is that of Attorney N. S. Taylor, who has announced that he is a candidate for the honors now borne by the patriarchic Martin B. Madden, Madden is one of the most powerful members of the national legislature and a white man. Taylor is a Negro. He came to Chicago from Mississippi where, his friends claim, he was too outspoken for the white folks. At one time he was identified with a so-called insurgent element of the National Equal Rights League which reared its head in Chicago. Taylor's candidacy is expected to be only one of many that the voters of the district will be called upon to choose between at the forthcoming primary and election. There has been an insistent demand among the rank and file of Negro voters that the district, due to its large Negro population, should be represented by a Negro. The leaders among the Negro voters who have been in the House of Representatives during the 1970s are, of course, his powerful influence in congress which, they claim, he has yielded for the benefit of the district. They also have displayed an unwillingness to oppose him because of past favors he has done them and others in the district. The coming fight promises to be more bitter and more dangerous than it has been among the voters for different candidates for office are continually asked: "Is he a colored man?" It is believed that a number of colored gentlemen are going to answer the call. Taylor, in his announcement, deals at some length with the problems affecting the nation, at the present time, including immigration, taxation, farming, and recreation, mining, lynching, and so forth. Dr. Ward's name has for some time been among these mentioned prominently for a place at the institution. The Informer is not a paid hireling of the traction company nor any other concern, but this paper is interested both in the growth and progress of this city and the well-developed environment of our rural租户. We are opposed to class discrimination of any and all kinds, whether for racial, religious or any other reasons; yet the abolition of the colored jitney line, while permitting the white lines to stay in operation, was rank, willful and malicious class discriminator and confiscatory and high-handed legislation. We recourse have the colored people in this matter other than to do their part to help put the white jitneys where the colored jitneys are; viz: out of business "for keeps" Really, this should be the occasion we long have sought and mourned because we found it not! The mills of the gods grind slow, but they grind exceedingly fine; and, occasionally, human instrumentalities can play well their part in helping to accelerate the speed of the wheel. Many positive results are obtained by negative actions, for the man or race that will strike back and remember such gratuitous insults and base acts of ingratiate, will comp people to think several times before essaying to pull off such a stunt again. But, ah! these white jitney owners and operators figured that, with the San Felipe jitney line out of business, the agitation for the abolition of the jitneys would cease and that they would be "sitting pretty." Waco, Texas.—Led by the sensational "Hub" Tinsley, the Paul Quinn Tigers tamed the Bishop Bears early Christmas afternoon, before 2,000 free-zied football fans. Crashing, sliding and squirming over the sure, solid turf, the Tigers, playing with their usual machine-like grace, scored their touchdown in the last minute of the first quarter. The additional 3 points came as the result of a 40-yard drop kick in the face of a driving wind, by Sheppard, the sparkling Paul Quinn back. The final count being Paul Quinn 16, Bishop 8. The Tigers were not indicate the merits of the two teams. The Bishop Bears were outclassed. They fought gamely, but had no chance against the Wacoans. Xmas day, while Jermain, who had been in the first quarter, was not able to move more ground than all the Bishop backs put together. There was not a running back on Paul Quinn's team that did not gain more ground than either King or Jermain. The brilliant Kenyon was hazed in a rainy weather, and the team lost the Paul Quinn backs ripped off large gains over the left side of the Bear line. Coach Long expressed himself as being well pleased with the showing of his men, and Coach Collins, the Bishop, was not so happy. The team was not so good at foot. In congratulating the victors he admitted his team had been outclassed. And the Bishop boys are to be congratulated on their fight and splendid school spirit. Chicago, Ill.-The installation and dedication of a new $20,000 pipe organ in Olivet Baptist Church was the occasion for a musical festival night, which brought together the organists, who included the clading Prof. Clarence Eddy, known as the "world's greatest pipe organ." Among the artists who appeared for Dr. L. K. Williams were George R. Garner, Jr., M. Jesse Bonta Bonds, and James W. Walker, Walter Gossner, W. Alphonse Johnson and the Polyphone Choral Union. The organ, which was built by the M. P. Moller Co., of Hagerstown Mo., especially to meet the requirements of the church, is said to be one of its kind in the country. The biggest event in the history of the city, the republican national convention, will be here in June, and the people are determined that it will be an occasion long to be remembered. So far as the spectacular side is concerned, the big show in Public Hall, it is very certain that Calvin Coolidge, Hiram Johnson, et al., will furnish all the entertainment that one might expect from a national convention. Indications strongly point that way. But what Cleveland is deeply concerned about is the hospitality and general comfort that the people will receive. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 1924 OUR TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM Some of the proponents of the white jitneys (yes, we have no colored jitneys! and prospects are rather gloomy for any, even if the voters decide to retain the white jitneys) are contending that the voters should get certain guarantees, warranties and gifteded promises from officials of the Houston Street Car Company before casting a ballot for the abolition of these white jitneys. The citizens committee, after much labor and effort, had the officials of the local traction company to make certain definite promises and assurances and under the terms of the agreement, the city can force the traction company to carry out its part of the business, as far as this phase of the matter is concerned, the local traction company has made extensions and improvements in various parts of the city; has purchased and installed the latest type of cars and has considerably improved its service and raised the tone of its employees under the present local management. And in this connection it may be pertinent to state that the colored citizens of Houston have the best street car service afforded to them, and has considerably improved its service and raised the tone of its employees under the present local management. Visit the other cities of the Lone Star State and notice how inadequate the traction service is in districts occupied by our people how far they have to walk to board a car and what small provisions are made for them on so many of the lines in those cities. We are not holding any brief for the service here as it regards our people in toto, but The Informer knows that more street car services are available to people in Houston and its environs than in any other Texas city. There is the San Felipe line, which is almost a colored line, save the operator of the car; the Dowling line, which goes almost to the end of Dowling Street; the Pierce Avenue-West End line that runs through the city; the Montrose Third Ward; the Burry North, Sun Side, Sunset Heights, Laurel, Leeland lines; to say nothing of the Mandell, Montrose, Louisiana and similar lines that serve so many of our people who work in those districts. Unlike the majority of the Texas cities, the colored people of this city live in all parts of the municipal, and there is hardly a street car line in Houston that does not serve our people, and many of them have a Mission Third Ward" in the Liberty Harbor. The company plans to establish a new line to serve our people in the Fifth Ward, in the event the white jitneys are abolished at the election of Saturday, January 19. Other extensions and improvements have been assured on the part of the traction company officials, and this huge expenditure of money will mean the employment of additional colored men. The company plans to establish a new line to serve our people in this community have no other alternative except the traction company; for there is both a written and unwritten local law prohibiting colored people riding in these "white" jitneys. On the pro rata basis, population considered, our people are more dependent upon street cars than are the members of the other race; for the latter own thousands of automobiles, while our people are more dependent upon street cars solely upon the street cars or resort to the T. P. & W. ("take pains and walk"). How do the ones of our race, who must be at their jobs in the mornings or late at nights, get to and from their posts of labor? How do the majority of the men who reside in the other wards of the city, get to the Southern Pacific shops in the mornings? How do they reach home in the evenings? What means of transportation serves those of our race who are employed in Montrose, Hyde Park, Mandell and other white residential sections of the city? How do those of our men who work at Harrisburg and the Turning Basin, get to and from their work? How do the colored residents of Independence Heights, the erstwhile colored municipality, reach the city, get to and from their work? One of our crying faults is our refusal or failure to vote in all elections where we can cast a ballot; for if we fail to exercise our elective franchise rights, we should only blame ourselves for our poor voting. So many of our people think that, when they oppose a proposition that is before the voters of the city or community, they show their opposition by not voting. Then, too, some of our people seem to think that they will either be made aware of the offer to vote at the various elections and hence they remain away from the polls on election days—but, oh! how they can sing the "blues" about "our sad and sorry lot in Houston" for WHITE PEOPLE ONLY OR STREET CARS FOR ALL THE PEOPLE? This is the paramount question in the forthcoming election, and, since our people can not ride in these "white" itjneys, common sense or even intuition suggests that we vote for the abolition of these "white" itjneys, which are nothing but transportation parasites and traffic leeches. We must abolish the itjneys on election day, Saturday, January 19, 1924! HARRIS COUNTY'S "JIM-CROW" TAX LINE! We have heard of "jim-crow" railroad accommodations and "jim-crow" discriminations of various kinds, but it remained the tax collector's office of Harris County to institute, inaugurate or adopt a "jim-crow" tax paying line—really to out "jim-crow" all the "jim-crows!". Colored tax payers were startled and dumbfounded when they visited the Harris County court house last week and saw one sign that they had been ordered out of the line and forced to stand in the line with men, it was a new species of "jim-crowism" for these parts. Here were American citizens, members of the feminine family, who were denied the small privilege of standing in line with other American women to pay their state highway taxes on their auto-mobile. Several months ago or a few years ago, the county clerk's office issued an edict and enforced it, not only requiring but compelling every colored man who entered at office on business to doff his hat, notwithstanding the fact that men of other races were not made to pursue this hat-doffing and "squatting" course in said office. But why is it necessary for American citizens and tax payers to be prescribed against, "jim-crowed," humiliated, embarrassed and otherwise insulted by servants of the people at the tax collector's office or the office of any other county and municipal official? And where did they lose their status as "female of the species?" When did colored women cease to be "women?" Ordered out of the line with "white women" these "jim-crowed" race women were a pititable sight, jostled, jeered and jammed by the police. They were not only property nor necessity of imposing such humiliation and rank and wilful discrimination upon these tax-paying citizens of the female gender! It appears it that a woman for a colored woman to own an automobile and pay highway taxes in Harris County, and for this reason she must suffer the penalty of being "jim-crowed" and treated like cattle! In social matters no colored woman nor man intrudes himself upon those who are not anxious about her or his company, but when it comes to paying taxes and transacting business with county and city officers, it ceases to be a social matter, but becomes a merely a matter of business. Unlike mercantile establishments where, if a member of the race is mistreated and humiliated in one store, he or she can trade with another, no such situation obtains in paying state highway, state land and municipal transacting other business with the regularly appointed and constituted officers. With the exception of the poll tax, which can be paid at the American Mutual, $714.9% Prairie Avenue, all citizens must pay their state and county taxes and secure their automobile license. The county officials and attaches of the various county offices are paid from the taxes of all the people, and yet they have the brazen affrontery and unmitigated gall to hurl insult after insult in the face of some of the tax payers who help to make possible the retention in office and compensation for services (7) renders. These same women can visit the various business houses of the city and purchase goods at the same counter, at the same time; but when it comes to paying their taxes -ah! they must be separated and kept apart, lest the colored women pollute, defile and坏坏. How would you feel, if you not only had to pay your taxes, but were compelled to jim-crowd" and segregated when paying them? It is funny how some male members of the white race can act with reference to colored women in the day time and pursue such a different attitude when the shades of night have fallen and darken. How would you feel when colored women are not good enough to stand in the same line with white women at the tax window at the county court house, but any number of these ebony-hued sisters are good enough to be concubines, platinic and clandestine lovers of any number of men of the "superior" race that is, during the nights! Here is a Committee on Inter-Racial Co-operation and committee is not harming the public quarter. Pay your poll tax at the American Mutual and get ready for the political battles of 1924! This we should do whenever the occasion presents itself. FEMALE TROUBLES FREE BOOK J. J. HA REAL ESTATE NOTAR Eighteen Ye SOU On Saturday, January 19th, the voters of both races are called upon to cast a ballot either for the retention or abolition of the white jitneys. (There are no colored jitneys in the city and the city fathers state that the San Felipe jitney will never be re-established.) This issue vitally affects our people, for we are forced by circumstances to employ the local street cars more than any other racial unit in Houston, because we do not possess automobiles in sufficient numbers to offset this condition, and what is worse, we can not ride in these white jitneys. Our people are too indifferent, apathetic and unconcerned when such issues are before the electors, yet we always whine and complain about our "sad and sorry lot." The only way to better our "lot" is to wake up and vote in all elections, particularly those that mean something to our group. WE MUST SATISFY OR REFUND YOUR MONEY A committee of colored citizens, interested in the growth, development and progress of Houston, have studied the plans and recommendations for bettering local traction service and solution of our transportation problem, and we heartily recommend them to the colored voters of Houston as deserving of their consideration, support and approval at the polls on SATURDAY, JAN.19 Every qualified voter of 1923 can vote in this election and the issue is both simple and clean-cut—Whether Houston shall have a transportation system adequate to its present needs and future growth, serving all the people of the community, or a dual transportation system under the existing conditions which are too obvious to mention here. Since no members of our race can operate jitneys in this city (having been abolished by city ordinance during early part of 1923); since the law prohibits our people riding in these white jitneys; and, since all other American cities have abolished the jitneys, we urge the colored voters of Houston to go to the polls Saturday, January 19th, and COLORED CITIZENS COMMITTEE C. Teacher of English School in the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. (C) 1922, Western Newspaper Union.) LESSON FOR JANUARY 6 THE CHOSEN LEADER AND THE CHOSEN LAND LESSON TEXT—Gen. 13:1-7; 18:17-18. GOLDEN TEXT—In the shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Gen. 13:1. ENTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC—Abraham, the Pioneer. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC—Abraham and the Migration to Canaan. Following Adam's sin and the consequent rule thereof God gave a promise of a Redeemer (Gen. 8:15). In providing this redemption God used a leader and made him to be the head of the nation through whom the Redeemer was to come and choose a land in which that nation was to live. That leader was Abraham and the land was Palestine. 1. Abraham, the Chosen Leader (Gen. 12:1-3; cf. 18:17, 18). 1. His Ancestors (Josh. 24:2, 14). Abraham's people were idolaters. Very likely as a young man he himself worshiped idols. Tradition furnishes us with some interesting stories touching his struggle against idolatry. He knew how hopelessly disastrous idolatry was to the morals of the people and, therefore, would be able to lead them back to God. 2. His Call (Gen. 12:1; cf. Acts 7:2, 8). God came to him in Ur of the Chaldees and said unto him, (1) "Get thee out of thy country." Abraham had lived long enough to have formed strong attachments to his country. (2) "Get thee out from thy kindred." Abraham was not only to leave behind him his native land but his relatives as well, even his father's house. Since his kindred were idolaters, he must leave them. Abraham was to become a pilgrim, to be without a home. Even in Canaan, the only land he ever owned was a burial place. (8). "Into the land that I will show thee." He was not told what or where the land was. "He went out not knowing whither he went." (Heb. 11:8). While he dwelt in tents during his earthly sojourn, yet "he looked for a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God." (Heb. 8:10). 8. What God Promised Him (Gen. 12:2, 3). (1) The Father of a Great Posterity (v. 2). This has been literally fulfilled. So far as the lineal descendants of Abraham are concerned, his posterity is great, but his spiritual seed is almost numberless. We are all children of Abraham by faith. (2). To Have a Great Name (v. 2). No name in all history equals that of Abraham in its honorable influence. His is the name of honor among Jews, Mohammedans and Christians. (3). He was not only to others (vv. 2, 3). He was not only to become great and share God's blessings, but to be a blessing to others. This is the prevailing law of the spiritual life—being blessed to be a blessing. He was not to go out primarily for what he could get but for what he could do. Those who respond to this law of the spiritual life become the very touchstone of God, so precious to Him that He will bless those who bless them and curse those who curse them. God makes common cause with His people. To maltreat God's children is to lift the hand against God. No one who goes against Him can prosper. 4. His Obedience (Gen. 12:4-6), Abraham fully obeyed God. At His call he departed, went out, not knowing whither he went. II. Palestine, the Chosen Land. Although Abraham was a pilgrim and was permitted to sejour in the land, the land itself was given to his need. Israel, God's chosen and most favored nation, the nation to whom He came nearest and gave most, in order that they might pass on His goodness to the other nations of the world, was given the most strategic position in the earth. "Palestine was adapted as no other country to God's great purpose of establishing a pure religion and sending it to all the world. To this end a single nation was selected, trained and placed in the center of the world so that when the time came to publish the true religion all lands could be reached." Full peace and blessing can only come to the world when Israel, the priestly nation, shall come back to her own land. God's Love. There are questions which nothing can answer but God's love, which nothing can explain but nothing which can calm but a perplexing shadow and mystery upon all the creation until we see God in it—there is trouble and fear until we see God's love. The Past. O, there are some who want to away from all their past; who, if they could, would be better off. But you must learn, you must get God teach you, that the only way to get rid of your past is to get a brain to waste nothing — Phillip Brooks. **Hatred.** Hatred of a fellow-being is like a deadly cancer in the soul.
