CLASSMATE AND CHUM GONE.
"In the midst of life, there is death."
These words were brought home from the conductor of the department when he conducted, when my classmate and college clum, the Arthur Gorman, was assigned away after school.
No death since the passing of my father, the dentist, who fell asleep at Marshall in the summer of 1929, has so shocked and endangered me that but the death was of the sudden and unexpected nature.
Home from his office Monday afternoon, the dentist complained of indigestion and took some medicine from the doctor, but Tussle after his death wrote the physicians held a conference after he was diagnosed his case as acute appendicitis.
By George, familiarly known by all of his intimate friends as "Charry," he worked in the office of an operation Wednesday afternoon and was run to a local hospital, he underwent an operation Thursdays he underwent.
Though he rallied and held his own in the operation, afternoon, the case was inevitable, and away Saturday morning before many of his classmates were present, he met with the school for several penns the deceased and this columnist descented at an in literary department and school of printing and journalism. In May, he met with the classmate and class, and while he went to Meharry to study dentistry, we began by our printing and journalistic training.
As a dental practitioner, he stood high in religious, fraternal, social and civic circles in Houston, where he removed to this city when he was quite a liqht and thus he always clamored to his home.
He was well-mannered and had great charisma, determination and perseverance; for his father died when he was an old man, he determined and persevered; for his father for himself, though his beloved mother, Mrs. Mary Fisher, who knew many many many things, had to help "SHE" to prepare and get prepared for his place in life. He was cut down; yes, when it seemed that fortune was about to smile upon him, bibbons were about to be realized, he fell before the sickle of that cruel hearty and heavy and . . . and had any comics or foes, we never know them; for he was of a likable type, knew how to communicate with everybody, then had a smile for everybody; and was a cheerful and optimistic, and was a professor, race and society. If our hearts were not so overloaded, could say much more about our late classmates and college chum, but we were mission and say, "Not our will but our will." To the beloved family we extend our most profound sympathy, and we extend our Him to "Who doeth all things well."
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
Because their newspapers were quite common, Kentucky has recently administered unto alleged colored criminals a subterfuge behind the court of murder, behind white criminals was before the bar Judge, Editors of the Louisville Leader and Louisville News, respectively. WHITE STUDENTS HEARD WILLIAMS AT CHICAGO "U"
(By the Associated Negro Press)
Chicago, Ill.-Speaking before the students of Chicago University, Monday morning, Dr. L. K. Williams, pastor of the Olive Bapist Church and president of the National Baptist Convention, inc. pointed out what his students were to be a white man and declared that in the last analysis "Christianity can and must solve the problems of race relationship or confess its own inherent weakness and its inability to be a remedy." He insisted in setting forth the attitude which would be his if he were a white man, said: "My attitude would be a Christian attitude, recognizing the Negro as a human being and for member of human life and could not member the importance and sacredness of human life and could not member the necessities, privileges, and opportunities required for the happiness of human life and could not forget his marvelous progress and would therefore take that as the proof of his ability to be as him as being the member of some inferior race. And, above all, I would be forced to think that he would lead me to be his brother." Declarating further that he would rather than friction and would study the problems that the Negro faced, he attitude would "apart from my heart."

Miss Nickerson in a graduate of the Olivier Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, Ohio, and a plains of rare attainments, is the official wife of the National Association of Negro Musicians and one of the race's former artists, and the Texas Association should congregate with her services. We look forward to this feature with great pleasure.

anything like group or race prejudice and worst prejudice will be discussed. Christianity. True Christianity is not concerned about color but character and about making men like women. So is many people are more concerned about the origin of races than they are about the reign of Christ.

Chengo, Ill.—If the opinion of two of America's editors of leading newspapers published for Negroes can be interpreted in terms of what the Negro general public will do in respect to the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court, virtually counteracting individual private contracts to prevent Negroes from purchasing or using certain property, the position of the Negro is not hopeless.
Negro leaders in all parts of the country are unanimous in recognizing the grave import of the Supreme Court action. To many of them it spells a sort of doom, especially when it is linked with the action of Coolidge, the executive head of the government, in signing the Jim Crow bathing beach bill, and of the congress, the legislative measure. It seems that true emancipation of the Negro and the bestowal of his citizenship rights is shut off in all directions.

1. Their Birth (25:21:38)
2. In answer to Iesha's prayer, seed was given unto him. Before the child was given unto him, Iesha beath the fact that the older should serve the younger. God revered the ordinary law concerning the position of the elder.
II. Esau Sells His Birthright (25+
27-33).
1. It was right that Jacob should have the birthright and the blessing, for it was according to God's plan that Jacob should scheme to get them in to be condemned. He took advantage of a brother's weakness to drive a sharp burglary. Sean the profane (Ieb. 12,13,17)
Many think that profanity is only swearing, but swearing is not the most important element in a marriage. For example, away of appetite is to be a profane word, his sale has birthday gifts for his potriage. This birthright was the gift of his marriage, a position of honor and influence, as well as being the inferior of a double portion of the income. The marital family, a position of honor and influence, it should not be despised. In the moment of his distress he thought he was going to die. In some caral satisfaction, he was willing to relinquish all claims on the property. He was gratified. A profane person, therefore, is one who for the endowment of his marriage will forlorn all claims when the future. J.H. Jacob Sees the Blessing (J.H. Jacob Sees the Blessing)
1. Eats requested to get venison for his father (vy, 1-4).
Isaac loved Eauu because of his vengeance (Gen. 32:38). He ought to have given him the sword, but he is a sad comment upon a father that his love for his son had such a power that he rebels. 2 Rebekah's scheme (v. 5-33). God had said to her that the elder should serve the younger. It was His plan to have him born to God but God was able to bring His own plans to him. 3 Remembrance cry (v. 38-40). When he came to realize that he had not only loved his birthday but the birthday of his beloved sister, he earnestly begged for a blessing, even seeing it with bitter tears. 4 Jacob Meets Eauu (Gen. 82:11-13)
1. As a result of Jacob's cunning and selflessness, he led to his home to save his brother and selflessness and sin God appeared to him at Bethel. He offered for deliverance from Beau's wrath (§32-91-12).
He was about to meet his brother, whom he had wronged some twenty years ago. (1) He made his plea on the basis of God's covenant. Jacob came in that relationship. (2) He pleaded that he was in God's care and had a right to plead that relationship. (3) He pleaded that he was in God's care and had a right to plead that relationship. (4) He made our pleas before Him on this matter. (5) He made a definite plea. He told God plainly of his danger. He said, "Deliver me from the head of the enemy." (6) The angel wrestles with Jacob (§32-22-0). And it was not Jacob wrestling with the angel, but the angel wrestling with Jacob. Jacob did not get the blessing because he wrestled. Jacob was not crippled and in his helplessness clung to God.
4. Jacob gets a new name (§32-27-0).
This experience at the Ford of Jabok brownt a mighty change in Jabok's dress. He left the docet was left behind and "larsal," a prince with God," entered the land. V. Eauan and Jacob Reecobled (381) At Jabok Jacob got right with God, so now he easily got right with Eauan. It is easy to get with our brother after getting right with God.
In a Trackless Wilderness He sees no star can never be stable. He wanders valiant in a tracked wildeman—O. H. Morrison.

**Gentle is Humility** We must appeal to ourselves. But how could this be possible, unless there were identity of nature between their imagination and their real life, only one of quantity. It were better to change "poeta nautica" in to "bono nautica poeta"; some men have been taught the cult of the genius with all its attentive superstitions has arisen from this quantitative difference having been forgotten. It has been forgotten that genius is not something that has fallen from heaven, but humanity itself—Orca.
**She d Overlooked Him**
A Katauano (little), woman told the police who were hunting for her husband, that she had not seen him for what she thought was supposed, and finally discovered him in the closet. She expressed surprise; and that she had looked in the bureaucracy and the court, and that he was not in the house—Expert Weekly.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JUNE 5. 1926
SUPREME COURT AND WASHINGTON SEGREGATION.
The supreme court of the United States, with Justice Sanford reading the decision, recently declared that "under the pleadings," it had no jurisdiction over the new species of residential segregation originating at Washington, D. C., where individual white owners of property have agreed and entered into a segregation ordinance to members of the Negro race for a given period of time. This opinion of the highest legal tribunal in the country does not in any way affect or nullify the decision handed down in the case. In the case of the segregation cause, where the supreme court held that residential segregation ordinance passed by said city was invalid, null and void. In the Louisville case the municipal government sought to prescribe the residential metes and bounds of the colored citizens, and this attempted act the highest court in the land held uncontested. In the Washington, D. C., cause, the same condition did not exist, neither had the municipal or district government sought to segregate the colored inhabitants by a special segregation ordinance. However, in the absence of such a statute in the Capital City, a group of white property owners entered into a private agreement among themselves to keep their district "lily-white," and to not sell their holdings to colored people, under any circumstances. When a wealthy colored woman sought to purchase a piece of property in this district from a white woman (who consented to the sale), a group of her white neighbors and covenants sued an injunction and the sale of the property by the white woman.
Seeking to establish the invalidity of this pact, both the white and colored woman joined hands in a legal fight to settle the point at issue; and, with the lower courts all concurring with the covenants and holding that the injunction was granted the investigators on valid and perfectly equitable grounds, the case was finally appealed to the supreme court of the United States.
With the racial issue (as it regarded the segregation of colored citizens in Washington and the nation) flaring up in the controversy, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NACP) argued that expert legal talent to contest every inch of ground in the case, and to get an opinion from the highest legal tribunal in the land, concerning the validity and constitutionality of such an agreement between citizens of one race as against citizens of another race.
The legal counsel for Measdames Irene H. Corrigan (white) and A. M. Curtis (colored), the two women involved in the proposed real transaction, and the resultant injunction, sought to prove that such an agreement was contrary to and in violation of the 5th, 13th and 14th constitutional amendments, and the supreme court was asked to void and invalidate this secret and private contract which was main bone of contention (on the surface) in the Supreme Court.
The supreme court held that no constitutional right was involved or at stake, and therefore that body had no jurisdiction of the matter; that "individual invasion of individual rights is not the subject matter of the amendments, and that the 13th amendment, "denouncing slavery and involuntary servitude, does not protect the individual rights of persons of the Negro race.
This late decision of the supreme court, in refusing to bring this cause within its scope and purview, has placed a legal stamp of approval upon the Washington type of residential segregation, one of the most pernicious and malignant species extant; but the court also held, in substance, that the case was not appealed in this case. The court has also unanimously united the Negro race is willing to hoist the white flag or show the yellow streak, the case should be revised and the fight carried to the highest court again; for, as one swallow does not make a summer, one adverse court decision, even in such a vital and reaching issue, does not seal the race's doom nor make for our abject hopelessness. In the case will, there is a way; and we must find the way and then have the will to pick up the cudgel and wage an incessant legal battle for our rights, both individual and collective, and put to complete rout the hideous, hydra-headed monster of segregation, discrimination, Jim-crowism," disfranchisement, injustice and inequality—for "nothing is settled until it is settled

TRAVIS STREET ROWDIES NEED CURBING!
It seems that Travis Street, in the 600 block, is destined to precipitate an ugly situation between the colored and white races here; unless the youthful white rowdies, who hurl missiles on street cars at colored passengers and who pick fusses with and make attacks upon colored pedestrians in the neighborhood of the Iris theatre, are curbed in their depredations. Some weeks ago a colored female passenger on a street car negotiating this part of Travis Street, after being struck with a missile hurled by some mischievous and cowardly white upstart, pressed her trusty "gat" into service and shot into the crowd, seriously wounding one youth. Some of the white witnesses testified at the preliminary hearing that the race woman shot the wrong boy, and the entire incident was a very regrettable affair; but numerous complaints have been registered concerning the conduct or misconduct of a group or "gang" of white youths who infest and infect that downtown block. Last Sunday evening two law-abiding and peaceful colored citizens, one a dental practitioner and the other the proprietor of a cleaning and pressing establishment, were pouenced upon by a mob of these rowdies; the dentist emerging from the attack and fleeing the flooded streets. He states that when he called a police officer, the said officer started to arrest him (the race dentist), but instead of making any arrests or seeking to inquire into the cause of the attack or the principals in the mobocratic demonstration, the minion of the law department — out of you again"
Having thus issued his ultimatum, the police officer departed from the scene of the attack, as did the bruised and beaten colored dentist; and at hour of going to press no arrest has been made. However, if a white man of the lowest social type had been treated similarly by a crowd of colored rowies and miscreants, a riot call would have been sent in to police headquarters, and every colored man and boy in the immediate vicinity of the attack were treated and treated to a free ride to Goodson Hotel (city bastile). Not only that, but the treasury of the corporation court would have materially increased and substantially enlarged through the medium of fines assessed against and upon said colored mobsters are now, if the victim had been white and the aggressors colored. Citizens do not like the idea of being pounced by rowies and hoodlums when said citizens are attending to their own business, it matters not what their racial connection may be; and police officers should make arrests where such unwarranted and unlawful actions are made upon law-abiding and peaceful citizens and taxpayers. No police officer is supposed to act as judge, jury and executioner when such attacks are reported to him; for these men are placed and kept on police duty to protect all citizens—despite the fact that they are not required to arrest any person who has violated or is violating the law. As the mighty oak springs and grows from the tiny acorn, so can a terrible civil holocaust develop and culminate from such little attacks by a group of rowies; and those in authority who have been arrested are not permitted to be suppressed and carried before matters a more serious trend and preposition—for "a stitch in time will save nine."
TEXAS DOCTORS MEET HERE NEXT WEEK.
Houston will be hostess to the annual session of the Lone Star State Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association next week, the opening public program being held in the auditorium of the Odd Fellows Temple next Tuesday night, June 8, 8:30 o'clock.
With a Houston physician, Dr. A. E. Jones as president of the state organization, and several local doctors and dentists who have been honored with the prestige of the association proper, the Houston community will be invited to women, and women and the citizens' committees, plans to make next week's stay of the visitors both pleasant and profitable.
The gathering is not merely social in its aspects and activities, but some real constructive work is always done for the betterment of the community. The former desires to call special attention to the free surgical, medical and dental clinics that will be conducted by these doctors during the association next week.
Those of our people who are in need of such services and who do not have such special expert treatment, should take advantage of these surgical, medical and dental clinics to be held here June 8, 9 and 10.
According to information from the local headquarters of the organization, the Houston attendance will be the largest in the city, and the organization, with doctors and surgeons from adjacent and other states.
*Houston is looking forward with much anticipation to this forthcoming medical meeting, and The Informer is delighted to extend to these visiting doctors, dentists and pharmacists a correspondence with the organization, a city that is growing so rapidly that the United States census bureau can not keep up with its increase in population.
With the largest colored population of any city in Texas, Houston has a large number of colored home owners, thrifty and productive residents, and with those existing in some of the more liberal Southern cities.
We wish to congratulate the state organization for selecting "leave-houston" as their 1928 meeting place, and that trust that we will be able to support the organization.
The Mirror--

two race men after deliberating less than 20 minutes; while soldiers, with fixed bayonets and machine guns placed at strategic points, held a battle mind. You both were found guilty and given the death penalty, but neither was convicted. The suspect victim did identify either man as one of her assailants. But because the two race editors can influence and legalized lynch law they have been indicted under the trial judge. The trial judge has granted the trial judge the presumption to influence public
opinion in his favor, and to endeavor to show that fairness and justice are achieved in the treatment of the demeaned man, and that the race editors were "agricultural and liberal-leaning" in their colored press, will watch with much interest the outcome on these two issues. The press will express its speech and the right of the press to express its candid and honest opinions in the measure of truth, and since it is a velled, yet high-handed threat to stifle the press against wrong and injustice in low and place, the crisis against the cause of the race and other Ameri-ants who believe in the guarantee of justice, will voicenamed to every American citizen under the provision of the federal laws.
