Douglas Shoes and Oxfords-All the new leathers and styles for Men, Boys and Women KANSAS PRICES That Bring the CROWDS ONLY A FEW DAYS DUNBAR SCHOOL WAS AWARDED FIRST PLACE IN MEMORY MUSIC CONTEST In the memory music contest of which all the colored schools were in the Neely group, Dunbar school, of which Miss Ella Robinson, that knows no failure, won first place. The following contestants represented Dunbar: Brown Ewing, Lillie Harris, Lucile Anderson, Alonzo Wilson, Madeline Howard, DeWitt Howard, sister and brother, Mary Clark, Vernon Norman, Mary Leach, and Mary Mack. Dunbar did not stop here, but one member, Brown Ewing, in both recognition and information, he being one of four out of the entire student body of the city. Mrs. Virginia Elliott was in charge of this group, who gave them Wednesday at the school a noon hour reception. The colored schols have led in every memory music contest since its beginning. The "information" is a newly added part to the contest, of which questions are asked each contestant to give some information as to the life of the author of the music produced in their hearing. Forum At 4 p. m. a large number attended the Forum to hear Miss H. Q. Brown, of Ohio, talk. She gave a splendid advice to our race and received applause all through it. Mrs. Childs presided, and after the anthem, composed by a colored man, was sung, 10 students from the Western Baptist College in Kansas City, Mo., sang beautifully and were encored with ovations. Mrs. Jenkins, of Kansas City, Mo., introduced Miss Brown and at the close of her speech Mrs. Childs presented her a bouquet. Mrs. Brown is National President of the Women's Federation of clubs, and her main thoughts were, "Our race must get out of the woods; and "We do not ask for forgiveness but we ask for opportunity." He professed a hope in Christ in 1899 and lived a consistent Christian life until his death. He leaves a dear wife and step son, and a host of friends. He was a class leader, in St. Paul, A. M. E. church and a chartered member of Kaw Valley lodge No. 85, of the York Rite Masons. The Craftsmen turned out in great numbers as well as the Ladies' Courts, with their M. A. M.'s, and the M. G. A. M., Mrs. Dovie Commings, St. Paul have lost a great man. We will see him again in a brighter clime. Rev. J. A. Broadnax, pastor preached the funeral, the funeral of Brother G. Sampson, on Monday at 2 p. m., at the 2nd Baptist church, was preached by Rev. Dr. N. S. Jenkins. MRS. CORA BROADNAX, Reporter. Mrs. Eagleson of Topeka, and State President of the C. M. E. Women's Mission, read the welcome address at the banquet for Bishop Cleaves. Bishop H. B. Parks has been the house guest of Rev. and Mrs. C. E. Brooks, 1111 North Eighth street this week. L. F. & A. A. Y. M.'s, you will G. L. F. & A. A. Y. M.'s, 2325 Ruby avenue, you will please take due notice, that all of the Craftmen, will send on your Building assessments, by the 29th of April, 1924. Send it to Rev. Moses Johnson, the treasurer of the building fund and turn over to him that you have in hand, that the Workmen may not be obstructed from his labor. I thank you so much for what you have done, and for what you are doing. Alas, I am afraid we are too slack, in supporting our treasurers. We are paying out too much money to the wrong class or classes, what we call sick dues, too many would be men join our lodges to be supported, to take them out of jail for crap shooting, boot legging, and breaking the laws that he promises to support and tooth ache, head ache, hurt, to lazy to work, and in fact is not fit to belong to any institution that have morals, for its motto. Stay away from the church mason, and do not care for the church mason, a lying mason, dishonest mason, a stealing mason, fighting mason, selfish mason, in fact no mason at all. No masonic lodge in the world promises to bury and take care of no mason when he can help himseft. We do assist, but not to carry them as a child, just get out of the way and let this mother lodge have a half of a show and mother, will not fail and will tell the true craftmen where to place the dejected stone, men jumping out of one into the other, like a leaping frog, therefore a leaping mason. A good mason can live anywhere you put him, and you cannot keep a good mason from the church. We look over, and around us, and find thousand pieces of men, and all the pieces not enough to make one mason. Greetings to all. Fraternally yours, J. A. BROADNAX, G. M Mrs. Pearl Bryant, 2109 North Third street, who has been confined to the house for several months, was able to be out on the street this week. Her many warm friends are repoicing to see her health back again. C. MIDNIGHT MUCH INTERESTED WASHINGTON, D. C., April 17 Here I am this week in Washington, but I am not in the White House, but in the house of a president and this time it is President W. H. Jernagin, D. D., of the National Race Congress, a man whose whole life is wrapped up in his people, and I believe in my soul that he has spent more of his salary in developing the Race Congress than he has in his family, and he is not tired yet. The man who renders an unselfish service to a cause or people will have to tote the bag, and then he will have to spend his money while a few would be leaders, who tote the burden of the whole race around in their pocket can do nothing but criticise, and try to kill the man who is doing the work. It is an easy thing to find fault, and pick flaws, for they found fault with the Master whose mission on earth was to serve and to benefit mankind, but the men did not rest until they had killed him. But they could not keep him dead. He is still serving a thankless world. Here and there you find loyal followers, and I hope you are one of them. I think I told you that the Race Congress would meet here April 29, and remain in session until May 2, and people are going to be here from all parts of the country. Mt. Carmel Baptist church has thrown, open wide its doors and invited the Congress to come in and do something for the people. It is a church that believes in progress, and they have both a progressive and aggressive pastor, for Rev. W. H. Jernagin, is the pastor, and his church stands right back of him in anything that menas progress, anything that he (Concluded next week.) 6.95 You Can Always Silk Scarfs do betteras g in all color 4 FA). combinations eta ES WOMEN'S WEAR __. $1.95 to $5 - 622 Minnesota Avenue 4 A , , SMALL WN & .
