Metropolis Weekly Gazette
Metropolis, Illinois
The Reverend Joseph B. McCrary ran the Metropolis Weekly Gazette out of the small Ohio River town of Metropolis, Illinois, publishing every Friday from 1889 until 1938. The paper ran church news, crime reports, and political commentary, along with a regular feature called "Afro-American Cullings" that addressed questions of racial advancement and education. McCrary also covered Black soldiers' service in World War I and the racial violence that followed in 1919.
