The Muskogee Cimeter. Muskogee, I. T., The Sons of Daniel Boone at Jamestown. The Sons of Daniel Boone, a patriotic association for boys, conducted by the WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION, has perfected its plans for representation at the Jamestown Exposition. Dan Beard, the founder of the Club, writes in the June WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION. Many of you who read about the Sons of Daniel Boone for the first time will ask, 'What is this society, and what is it all about?' For the benefit of those, I shall explain again that the Sons of Daniel Boone is a society organized with the view of uniting the boys of America in one big association for the purpose of enjoying clean, manly sports, out-of-door fun and woodcraft, in a clean, manly way. This is nearly the whole thing in a nutshell. The Sons of Daniel Boone believe in the high ideals of such men as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Boone and the entire army of brave discoverers and pioneers. We believe in the vigorous lives they led and the manly courage and skill that made of these men the heroes that they were. "Just now I want to remind you that the Exposition at Jamestown is a matter of great importance to the Sons of Daniel Boone. There is a real Boone Fort there, of cabins built of logs, an exact reproduction of the original old Boonesboro in Kentucky. During the entire Exposition the Sons of Daniel Boone will have headquarters right there in one of these cabins inside the stockade." NEGRO CANDIDATE FOR STATE OFFICE. We are delegated to announce the candidacy of Mr. E. E. McDaniel of South McAlester, Vol 8 as a candidate for Railroad Commissioner, subject to the will of the Republican State Convention to meet at Tulsa on June 5, 1907. McDaniel is a a true blue Republican, and is one of the "boys in the trenches." He stands for the mystic numbers 777. He is one of the leading spirits of the Negro State Protective League with its 46,000 voters. Mr. McDaniel is a railroad contractor, a man of affairs with good business qualities.—Western Age. McDaniel is one of the most able, competent and influential Republicans in the new state. If we nominate a state ticket (and we hope the party will not) then we would be glad to see Mc a candidate. There is no better Republican living than McDaniel. 50,000 is the Negro vote of the state.—Ed. THE DEFENDERS OF THE FLAG Pass Ringing Resolutions. The Grand Army of the Republic is not a political organization, but by becoming a member of this great society whose members have given evidence of their love of country by offering their lives that the republic might live, they do not forfeit any right of the American citizen to express their opinions upon subjects vital to patriotism and the welfare of state and nation. The proposed constitution provides in section three, article 3, "that no officer, soldier or marine of the regular army or navy of the United States is entitled to vote at any election in this state." This proposition is vicious in principle and public policy. If any citizen of the Republic is entitled to put his vote in an American ballot box and have an equal say with his American brother as to who shall be one of the officials of the state of nation, it is the man who dedicates his life to his country's service, becomes a member of its honored army or navy, and by so doing says to the invader or to those who offer insult to our national honor, you may send a bullet through my heart but you shall not trample on "old glory" or insult this land of liberty bequeathed to us by George Washington and Abarham Lincoln. These men are guaranteed all the rights of American citizenship by our Federal Constitution. They are part and parcel of our country. Their blood is as rich in good principle and as grand in patriotism as any under the stars and stripes. Their homes and children are as dear to them as the most favored of the nation. In times of national peril they are first on the scene of conflict and the last to leave. The Grand Army of the Republic demands for them equal political rights before every ballot box in this state and nation. To deny it is act af base ingratitude, the rankest injustice and brands the makers of our proposed constitution as wanting in fidelity to the best manhood of our Union. To say that. the bootlegger and the gambler may help to choose our governor but that the soldier of America who fought our battles shall be disfranchised because of his enlistment for that purpose, is treason against American manhood and liberty. It is an insult to patriotism and an affront to the best courage of the land, to say that a member of the army of the United States cannot vote in the state even his home is within its limits and there live, his wife and little ones. In view of these outrageous provisions we call upon the President of our country to with hold his approval of such a constitution. We are in favor of statehood. We are in favor of immediate No 34 statehood. We are in favor of joint statehood of Oklahoma and Indian Territory. But we want even handed statehood. Statehood where every man has an equal political power in deciding the question as to who shall be the United States Senators to represent us in the national Congress and an equal say with any other citizens of our state as to what laws shall be enacted for our guidance. We are opposed to any constitution or any apportionment which gives the citizen of one county six times the voting strength of a like citizen in another county. Every citizen of Greer county is entitled under our form of government, saved to us by the Grand Army of the Republic, with just as much power in saying who shall represent us in the United States Senate as any citizen in Oklahoma county and no more. Any system of apportionment or plan of organization which gives to any portion of our state an advantage over any other part, is not republican in form and tends to destroy the plan of government intended by the fathers of the Republic. Any form of apportionment of political division which requires or demands that six American citizens at the ballot box living in Oklahoma county is equalled by one citizen at the ballot box living in Greer county is vicious, un-American and is not entitled to the support of good citizenship and honest American manhood. This feature of the constitution deserves the condemnation of all fair minded men and to this we enter our indignant protest. Resolved that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded by our commander to the commander in chief of the army and navy of the United States as embodying the hopes and opinions of the Grand Army of the Republic in the new state of Oklahoma. Don't Poison Baby. FORTY YEARS AGO almost every mother thought her child must have PAREGORIC or laudanum to make it sleep. These drugs will produce sleep, and A FEW DROPS TOO MANY will produce the SLEEP FROM WHICH THERE IS NO WAKING. Many are the children who have been killed or whose health has been ruined for life by paregoric, laudanum and morphine, each of which is a narcotic product of opium. Druggists are prohibited from selling either of the narcotics named to children at all, or to anybody without labelling them "poison." The definition of "narcotic" is: "A medicine which relieves pain and produces sleep, but which in poisonous doses produces stupor, coma, convulsions and death." The taste and smell of medicines containing opium are disguised, and sold under the names of "Drops," "Cordials," "Soothing Syrups," etc. You should not permit any medicine to be given to your children without you or your physician know of what it is composed. CASTORIA DOES NOT CONTAIN NARCOTICS, if it bears the signature of Chas. H. Fletcher. Rules for the Measurement of Hay in Stacks. A ton of dry hay contains all the way from 300 to 900 cubic feet, depending on the length of time it has been stacked and its quality. The rules for measuring hay vary in different localities, a cube of seven feet being considered in some places a ton and a cube of eight feet being considered a ton at other places. We would like to sell hay by the seven foot plan and buy it by the eight foot plan. A cube of hay eight foot each way will contain 512 cubic feet in all, which with the average run of hay will come very close to a ton. It takes a very excellent quality of hay for a cube of seven feet to make a ton. The rule for estimating the number of tons in an ordinary stack is to multiply the length in feet by the width in feet and this by the height to a point where the stack would be level. This height is sometimes considered one-half the height of the stack. The result divided by 500 will give a very good measurement of hay, being the number of tons in the stack. To estimate the contents of a round stack, says the Farmer, we multiply the square of the distance around the stack in yards by four times the height in yards and point off two places from the right and this will be the number of cubic yards in the stack, which divided by 20 will equal the number of tons. For instance, a stack measures 20 yards around the bulge and is eight yards high, to find the number of tons first square the distance around the bulge 20 yards which would be 400, multiplying this by four times the height eight yards, we would have 12,800, pointing off two places from the right making 128, which, divided by 20 gives 6 and 4-10 tons of hay in the stack. This is a good time to be figuring out some kind of a latch that will fasten the gate easily. One that will hook itself when he gate is pushed to is the best as it is more likely to be heeded by the hired man than one which he must stop and fumble with. The accompanying cut shows an ingenious and reliable latch for this purpose. The latch is made of iron and is so arranged that it will hook and hold the gate as soon as it is closed. Water in the Soil. It is not so much how much water falls in the form of rain, as it is how much is held in the soil by proper cultivation. If there were no moisture lost by evaporation, three or four inches of rainfall at the right time would raise a crop of wheat and a number of the other small grains. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is infamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. The Con- necticut is the finest vessel of her rate and size in the world, and she was built in a government navy yard. Gov- ernment money is spent honestly. There are no fights and squabbles to get what the contracts call for, If it does cost a litle more money it is worth it. In the progress of building up our navy for the last 21 years we are gradually getting to what is the nucleus of a very fair navy. We who are interested in the upbuilding of the navy, says Rear Admiral Joseph B. Coghlan, U. 8. N., in Leslie's Weekly, want more ships. We are to-day en- deavoring to get what we have been quietly working for the last 16 years ~-that is, large ships with large bat- teries and great speed. But the sea- going classes and the merchants are conservative. It takes a long time to change them, ‘Take, for instance, the case of the first monitor, It took the government a long time to adopt the plans. These monitors were intended for smooth water and not to go to sea, In the early days we were occupied in getting this type of vessels made into a battleship. We didn't want the mon- itors because they were unstable. It is only when we get the big battle- ships, whose movements are so slow and steady, that we get the best re- sults for warfare. The Actor and His Voice. ‘The supreme gift of the actor is his voice. A singer may or may not be vocally gifted. Yvette Guilbert gives all the effect of melody, even evokes the spirit of tragic horror, with vocal organs that are stiller and smaller than the proverbial voice of con- science, The most famous Carmen of our day is said on authority to be one of the worst singers. To the great actor, writes John Corbin in Apple- ton’s Magazine, the essential is voice, ugain voice, always voice. Mr. Mans- fleld himself has said something of the kind very eloquently, in an address to the students of the Empire School of Acting. “Think of your voice as a color and as you paint your picture (the character you are painting, the scene you are portraying) mix your colors. You have on your palate (palette) a white voice, la voix blanche; a heavenly ethereal or blue voice, the voice of prayer; a disagree- able, jealous, or yellow voice; a steel- gray voice for quiet sarcasm; a brown voice for hopelessness; a lurid, red voice for hot anger; a deep, thunder- ous voice for black; a cherry voice, the color of the green sea that a brisk breeze is crisping; and then there's a pretty little pink voice, and the shades of violet-—but the subject is endless.” The first building ever erected in the United States for the public use of the federal government, under the constitution, was the mint at Philadel. phia, Robert Morris, the patriotic financier of the war of independence, was first to bring up the question of a national mint, and it was he who worked with Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton to induce con- &ress to adopt the Cecimal system of money arithmetic, A college girl out in New York fs going into business this summer as an Adirondack guide. If the Maine girls ever follow her example, the guides now licetised for the Maine wil- derness may have to cut rates in order to get business, BOY HAD NOT UNDERSTOOD. Pretty Phrase That Was ?igct Woe fully Misunderstood, That the effect of a choice and ap- propriate phrase is sometimes lost and ofttimes woefully misinterpreted 's well illustrated in an incident con- nected with the death of a Virginia lawyer. During the man’s illness the wires were disconnected which attached the bell to the old-fashioned pull knob on the front door, A messenger boy came to the house oné morning and began pulling at the bell. There was no response. He continued to jerk the ancient knob rigorously. A white-haired gentleman finally appeared, who raised his hand warningly and said: “My boy, the silver cord has been severed.” , “Is that so?” exploded the boy, “From the way it acted I thought the whole darn thing was busted.”—N. Y, Times, Desert Lands Made Fertile. According to official figures, since the reclamation law was enacted by congress in i902, eight towns have been built and 10,000 people have set. tled on what were desert lands. One hundred miles of branch railways have been built, 1,267 miles of canals have been dug, many of which carry whole rivers, and 47 tunnels have been excavated. It is estimated that the territory embraced in what is ¥nown as the arid regions of the Unit: e4 States covers 600,000,000 acres, of which about 60,000,000 acres are sub- ject to irrigation and can be converted into farms as productive as lands in the most favored sections, An Oversight. ‘When Chappie got up the other morning he wandered around his apartment in his pretty pink pajamas, the very picture of woo, “What's the matter, sir?” inquired his valet. “I don’t know, Alphonse,” he groan- ed; “I passed a most unhappy night.” Alphonse looked him over carefully. “Oh, sir,” he exclaimed, “I know what was the matter. The trousers of your pajamas were not creased. You must be more careful, sir. Those I had prepared for you were hanging across the foot of the bed.”—The Bo hemian, Sartorial Outcry. A change of some sort in nether garments would be welcomed by many for since the introduction of the crease they have been stationary from the standpoint of style, and it would be well if some fluting, pleat- ing or strapping could be introduced to revivify this garment.—Tailor and Cutter. FIT THE GROCER Wife Made the Suggestion. A grocer has excellent opportunity to know the effects of special foods on his customers, A Cleveland grocer has a long list of customers that have been helped in health by leaving off coffee and using Postum Food Coffee. He says, regarding his own expe- rience; “Two years ago I had been drinking coffee and must say that I was almost wrecked in my nerves. “Particularly in the morning I was so irritable and upset that I could hardly wait until the coffee was served, and-then I had no appetite for brevkfast and did not feel like attend- {ug to my store duties. “One day my wife suggested that inasmuch as I was selling so much Postum there must be some merit’ in it and suggested that we try it. 1 took home a package and she prepared it according to directions. The result was @ very happy one. My nervous: ness gradually disappeared and to-day 1am all right. I would advise every- one affected in any way with nervous- ness or stomach troubles, to leave off coffee and use Postum Food Coffee,” “There's a Reason,” Read, “The Road to Wellville,” in pkgs, Tired Nervous Women Make Unhappy Homes wan |i ple: Levey! ITCHING RASH 18 YEARS, Girl’s Rar’ Spread and Grew Worse Under specialist’s Care—Perfect Cure by Cuticura Remedies. “When my daughter was a baby she had a breaking out behind the ears. The doctor said that she would out- grow it, and it did get somewhat bet- ter until she was about fifteen years old, and after that she could get noth- ing that wonid drive it away. She was always applying something in the way of salves. It troubled her behind the knees, opposite the elbows, back of the neck and ears, under the chin, and then it got on the face. That was about three years ago. She took treat- ment with a spevialist and seemed to get worse all the time. We were then advised to try the Cuticura Remedies, and now I don’t see any breaking out. Do you experience fits of depression with restlessness alternating with ex- treme irritability ? Do you suffer from pains in the abdominal region, backache, bearing-down pains, nervous dyspepsia, sleeplessness, and almost continually cross and snappy? If so, your nerves are in a shattered con- dition and you are threatened with nervous prostration, Proof is monumental that nothing in the world is better for nervous troubles of women than Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, made from native roots and herbs, ‘Thousands and thousands of women can testify to this fact, Mrs, Nellie Makham, of 151 Morgan St., Buffalo, N. F. Simmons Now On the Market. Here is Your Opportunity to Buy a Farm of from 10 Acres to 640 and Two Town Lots in This "Garden Spot" for $210. Payable $10 per Month Without Interest. Investigation will show that this 95,000 acres comprises one of the finest bodies of Agricultural and Truck Farming land in the entire state, commencing about 36 miles south of San Antonio and about two miles south of Pleasanton (the county seat of Atascosa County), and extending through Atascosa and a part McMullen Counties, to within 17 miles of my 60,000-acre Live Oak County Ranch, which I in four months last year, sold to 4,000 Home Seekers, on liberal terms, without interest on deferred payments, which gives the poor man, from his savings, a chance to secure a good farm and town lot for his home in town. I will donate and turn over to three bonded Trustees, $250,600 from the proceeds of the sale of this property to the purchasers, as a bonus to the first railroad built through this property on the line which I shall designate. This property is located on that middle plain between East Texas, where it rains too much, and the arid section of West Texas, where it does not rain enough. Its close proximity to San Antonio, the largest city in the State, with a claimed population of over 100,000, enhances its value as a market for Agricultural and Truck farm products far beyond the value of similar land not so favorably located. Topography. Level to slightly rolling. Large, broad, rich valleys, encircled by elevations suitable for homes; 90 per cent. fine farming land, balance pasture land. Forestry. Ash, Elm, Gum, Hackberry, Live Oak, Mesquite, Pecan, abundant for shade, fencing and wood. Soil. About 60 per cent. rich, dark, sandy loam, balance chocolate or red sandy loam, usually preferred by local farmers, and each with soil averaging from 2 to 4 feet deep, with clay subsoll, which holds water. Climate. Mild, balmy, healthy, practically free from malaria, few frosts, no snow, no hard freezes; continuous sea breeze moderates extremes of heat and cold, producing warm winters and cool summers. Average temperature about 62 degrees. Rainfall. From the Government record, it is safe to assume that the rainfall on this property has been fully 35 inches per year, which is more than some of the old States have had, and is plentiful for ordinary crops properly cultivated, and for Grass Growing. Improvements and Water. This property is fenced and cross-fenced in many large and small pastures, with four barbed wires, with posts about 12 feet apart. Also a number of fine shallow wells. Also a number of fine Lakes and Tanks. Also, a number of fine flowing Artesian Wells, whose crystal streams flow for miles and miles down those creeks, whose broad, rich valleys, irrigable from those continuously flowing streams, make it the ideal place for the Marketing Gardener who desires to raise from two to three crops of marketable produce on the same ground every year. Farming and Truck Farming. Seasons never end. This land is adapted to profitable culture of Beans, Cabbage, Celery, Cucumbers, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Beets, Carrots, Onions, Radish, Squash, Strawberries, Cauliflower, Okra, Oyster Plant, Peas, Rasberries, Turnips, Apricots, Cantaloupes, Grapes, Irish Potatoes, Olives, Sweet Potatoes, Bananas, Dates, English Walnuts, Figs, Melons, Peanuts, Barley, Blackberries, Broom Corn, Lemons, Plums, Tobacco, Alfalfa, Rye, Oranges, Peaches, Pecans, Corn, Cotton, Oats, Wheat, Apples, Pears. Page 63 of the book entitled "Beautiful San Antonio," officially issued by the Business Men's Club of San Antonio, dated May, 1906, says: "It is readily conceded by all those who know anything about Texas that the most prolific agricultural section is that which recognizes San Antonio as its logical center, particularly that portion directly south of San Antonio, with the Gulf of Mexico bordering on the southeast and the Rio Grande bordering on the south and west. "Within the last four or five years, in the territory named, special attention has been given to growing vegetables, they maturing at a time when they secure the maximum prices on Northern markets, which markets they virtually invade without a competitor. The profit in growing vegetables in this territory will be seen by an examination of the following figures, secured from reliable sources, showing Net Earnings Per Acre: "Watermelons from $75.00 to $200.00. "Cantaloupes from $40.00 to $75.00. "Cabbage from $125.00 to $225.00. "Cauliflower from $75.00 to $225.00. "Beans and Peas from $100.00 to $125.00. "Tomatoes from $125.00 to $400.00. "Potatoes from $60.00 to $150.00. "Onions from $150.00 to $800.00. "Tabasco Peppers from $500.00 to $900.00 per acre. "The Chicago Record-Herald publishing the following individual experiences in South Texas: "Men who came here with $500 and $600 a few years ago are now independently rich. "A young man who came to this country for his health, bought 18 acres and in one year cleared over $6,000 from it, which was $523.33 per acre. "Another man, 65 years old, from 79 acres, sold $5,000 worth of produce, from which he realized $63.29 per acre and then raised a Cotton crop on part of it, which made him $35 per acre, which made the same land net him $98.29 per acre for that year. "Another man from 80 acres in 1904 realized as follows: From Onlons, $2,226.91; from Cotton, $1,800; 200 bushels Corn; 12 tons Hay; 5,000 pounds Sweet Potatoes. "Another made $3,200 from five acres of early Cabbage, which was $640 per acre, and grew a second crop of Corn and Peas on the same ground that year. "Another realized $27,000 from 90 car loads of Cabbage, averaging $300 per car, which was $207.69 from each of the 130 acres he had planted. "Another netted, above all expenses, $60 per acre on Potatoes, and planted the same ground in Cotton that year from which he realized $35 per acre, which made that ground yield him $95 per acre. "Another realized $32,966 from 230 acres in Melons, which was $143.33 per acre. "Another netted $21,000 from 35 acres in Onions, which was $600 per acre. "Another netted $17,445, or $79.25 per acre from nine cuttings of 220 acres in Alfalfa, which yielded in one year 2,475 tons and sold at $11 per ton. "Another received $900 from one acre in Cauliflower; sown in July, transplanted in August, and marketed in December." The same authority quotes the following statement from the Hon. Joseph Daily, of Chillicothe, Ill., who owns thousands of acres in the Illinois Corn Belt. He says: "I am one of the heaviest taxpayers on farm lands in Mason and Tazewell Counties, Illinois, and I have been familiar with the conditions around San Antonio for 12 years. Any thrifty farmer can get rich, and make more money off of this cheap land, acre for acre, than any land in the State of Illinois, that sells from $150 to $225 per acre." Come to the land of beautiful sunshine and almost perpetual harvest. Where the people are prosperous, happy and contented. Where the flowers bloom ten months in the year. Where the farmers and gardeners, whose seasons never end, eat homegrown June vegetables in January, and bask in mid-winter's balmy air and glorious sunshine. Where the land yield is enormous and the prices remunerative. Where something can be planted and harvested every month in the year. Where the climate is so mild that the Northern farmer here save practically all his fuel bills and three-fourths the cost of clothing his family in the North. Where the country is advancing and property values rapidly increasing. Where all stock, without any feed, fatten winter and summer, on the native grasses and brush. A young lady having asked a surgeon why woman was made from the rib of a man in preference to another bone, he gave her the following gallant answer: "She was not taken from the head lest she should rule over him, nor from the feet lest he should trample upon her; but she was taken from his side, that she might be his equal; from under his arm, that he might protect her; from near his heart, that he might cherish and love her."—Houston Chronicle. A noble mind disdains not to repent. He Was Thicker Skimmed. Walter Howard, the London dramatist, was leaving the stage door of a theater one evening when an anemic-looking youth stepped up and said: "Are you Mr. Howard?" The author replied in the affirmative, whereupon the young fellow said he wanted to go on the stage. Noticing his evident unfitness for such a life, Howard advised him to stick to his present occupation, whatever it was. "I am assistant pawnbroker across the way," said the ambitious young man. "And what do your people think of your going on the stage?" asked Howard. "Oh, they are right against it," was the faunty reply, "but I shouldn't mind the disgrace myself."
