M. Pope Laurence Dumbar's death was marked by a pathic struggle against his suffering as have so many of his peers from consumption, alcoholism and insomnia. In ISE, when he was only 30 and since that time he had continued regularly to the magazines in enough to fill seventeen volumes. He was a fierce warrior between humor and the desire for less conventional in both. He have some claim to memory suffering of his later years and that he is the first of his peers to gain priority wide. He is a poet.

THE NEW YORK AGE.
The ninth anniversary of the White Rose Industrial Association was held at the home, 217 East 80th street, on Sunday afternoon, February 11, at 3 o'clock. The house was crowded to its uttermost capacity by an appreciative audience composed of members of both races; for want of more room many were turned away. A general report of the year's work was given by the superintendent, Mrs. V. E. Matthews, after which the report of the treasurer was read. Because of the intense crowd and the desire not to disturb the friends any more than necessary the opportunity was not given. Dr. Booker T. Washington delivered an interesting lecture on the great necessity of such work as is being done by the superintendent and her co-workers. He chose for protecting and caring for our girls who are crowding into this city daily from the South was of as much importance as the institutions founded by the white race to necessary it was for two races of people living together on the same continent to help each other, and how impossible it is for one to reach the top of the ladder without the help of others. If one was kept down the other must be down also. Mr. Washington urged the people to stand by such an organization and make it a success. As it is, Mr. Washington was without telling them how it can be done he said that it was very easy for them to help in the little contribution which would be asked for on that day; but that was not without helping them of helping was to go down into theirockets and make yearly contributions. Mr. Washington remained quite a little while after the meeting was over to allow off presence of help and to make his chance to do so. Other prominent speakers were present.

ATLANTA, Ga., FEB. 10—In this city
two weeks ago a white woman very nearly
caused a lynching had it not happened that
the whole affair resulted in a most interesting
and unkilled for denomination. It was
all because some scam had cut her throat
and bruised her head. She alleged that it
was an Afro-American and amid her rears
described how dreadful he looked as he
sprang upon her, grabbing her with one hand
and drawing the keen edge of the rater across
her throat with the other. She spoke of
him as a big black brute whose very appearance was repulsive. The papers printed extra-
lutions and the newsdays on the streets
were galloping about the "Negro brute that
cut the white woman's throat." The officers
got out their bloodbounds and the crowd
gathered to hunt down the guilty
fond and being him to justice. Everybody
was settling down to hear of the expulsion
of some black man and possibly of his being
in to death without a trial.
But almost from the first, there was something peculiar about the woman's story, when it was thoroughly studied. There was no doubt or question in the mind of anybody that she had been murderously assaulted for her threat was cut in three different places and her head and face were unmimicked, how, probably because of her way of telling her experiences, people began to whisper that she might have attempted suicide and then later, in a statement, that a man had committed the crime. Letters which she had written to others in which she had spoken to her despondency that she had been deserved by her husband.
In spite of her protestations that a big black bride, as she styled him, had made the gashes in her throat, an investigation on her part led to a court order in some peculiar development, the most of which went to show that there was but slight reason to support that any Afro-American woman should be allowed to have an adult daughter after all her husband. In fact, the more she pondered over the matter the more convinced she became in this opinion; and she suddenly came to the conclusion that assured her. The newspapers stopped paying much attention to the matter, the officers called off their dogs and the police came to the house. Then, for some reason, the woman's mother decided to pay a visit to a local Afro-American fortune-teller, who for years has been regarded as a sort of Aunt Nanny. She was informed that when he visited the man who made the desecration result on Mrs. Tupelo was none other than Mr. William Imperial bimonthly and the officers were idolatrous when he spring upon his wife and out her. This view of the desecration was readily repudiated in by mother and daughter, and how the officers have been asked to locate the husband, who is missing.
The false question is the one absurd theme of the day down this way and here is: SAN ANTONIO. February 1. The city authorities are in a japanned as to what to do with twelve indigent Italian immigrants, who were brought to San Antonio some days ago, and a company. They formal that the work required of them was not on the character he had expected and was not. They say they are arrests, which common that was demanded of them was not on the character he had expected and was not.
Complaint was made on the occasion of the presentation of the proposal for the establishment of the company and the underwriting of the loan and been brought here in the room. Steamboat company, and be proposed to seek a loan in New York. The complainant is followed in motion by the notice of the complaint that would be the purpose of the complaint was made in obligation to the New York.
"Bishop Kyley has become involved in the work of the militia in the Ottoman States. The bishop speaks well with the militia. The bishop that some congregants enrollment will be found for them, or that means for their transportation to New York will be provided. 5. This section of the State is experiencing a severity of labor such as it has never before been. It is almost an impossibility to get work. Work demands wages that are nothing short of or ordinary. A. John & Co., the operating toller, is the principal partner of the county, are solving the problem by bringing German immigrants to work on their plantations. A party of these laborers passed through Railbridge, that or two miles, the way to the Mississippi. "The Georgia, Florida and Alabama road has appointed Mr. R. F. Graham, of this city, the agrarian agent, the present in New York for the purpose of inducing immigrants to come to this section. "Britton, January 29. The Atlantic and Birmingham railroad has just placed an order for 1,000 Italians in New Jersey. This was done because of the unavailability of the Negroes. Arrangements and the first batch of 220 will arrive shortly."

Since the first meeting of the League and as a result of first annual meetings, some twenty Afro-American banks have been organized throughout the country. The purpose of the association would be to strengthen confidence in those institutions and to encourage the Afro-American people, wherever they are numerically strong enough to support them, to organize similar corporations. Mr. Petitford would cordially appropriate any suggestions that those engaged in the banking business may care to submit.

DR. WASHINGTON AT MONTREAL
THE CANADIAN CLUB ENTERTAINS
HIM AT LUNCHEON.
Canada's Aristocracy, Both Commercial
and Professional, as Members of That
Exclusive Club, Assemble to Do Honor
to the Great Educator of the Afro-
American Race—Another Instancer
of His World-wide Popularity and the
Interest Extended in His Work.
MONTREAL, Canada, Feb. 10.—Booker T. Washington was the guest of honor at a Launcheon given at St. Lawrence Hall Wednesday afternoon, February 7, at 2 o'clock, by the Canadian Club of Montreal, the Canadian Metropolis. The Canadian Club is one of the oldest, most exclusive and most noted organizations of the Dominion, and is composed of Canada's aristocracy, representing the leaders of the commercial and professional world. This Club and its branches in Ottawa and Toronto invite to address them at their annual celebrations the most prominent men of other Countries and on its lists of previous guests are to be found the names of royalty and notables. To this list has been added the name of the great Afro-American, Booker T. Washington. That Dr. Washington should be so honored by this exclusive club but emphasizes his ability, his world-wide prominence and popularity, and the great interest manifested in his work. Dr. Washington was at his best, and while he stood at the head of the banquet table and, in his element, captivating style, told of his life, his work and his people, the two hundred and fifty members listened with all eagerness at times almost moved to tears by the trials of his early life, at others consulted with laughter at his humorous meditations. It would be safe to say that at no time has this club been more satisfactorily or more pleasantly entertained, and Dr. Washington won many valuable and strong friends among the Canadians.
In the afternoon, at 4:30 o'clock, Dr. Washington gave an address to St. James Methodist Church, under the auspices of the MetGill University branch of the N. M. C. A. This occasion gave the faculty, students, and the public the opportunity of hearing the noted educator, and the greatest interest was manifested. By 4 o'clock the large church was filled, pastors of the leading churches of MetGill University and several classes of students being present. Prof. F. Adams, of MetGill University, presided, and in very complimentary terms introduced Dr. Washington, whose remarks will be long remembered by all who were so fortunate to hear him. He was frequently interrupted by heart applause, and expressions of approval could be heard on all sides. In Dr. Washington the Negro race has a leader of whom they are proud. His vigorous language and eloquence please and equate the most cultured listener; his plain and simple style can be understood by a child, and his earnest, mainly appeal for justice for his people creates sympathy and commands respect. To hear him express his ideas and ideas, his faith in his people his hope in their future, is to create new hope and new faith in that race, which simply asks to be given a chance and justice judged. To hear him trace their progress, from the imprisonment he ladder to their present improved addition to their confidence in their ability, and in the future Dr. Washington's great work. He is indeed, the university recognized leader of his race, and will deserves all honor shown him. After the meeting many of the audience pressed forward to shake hands with Dr. Washington, among them several of his own race.
During his stay in Montreal, Dr. Weikert
conducted research in the

VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE CONSIDERES BILLS FOR FOUNDING ONE.
$12,200 Appropriation Went to White School of Same Kind—White Greatest Upright—Purpose of the Bills—House—New Pressed State—Jim Crow—Bill—Now Up to the Senate—Birthdays of Lincoln and Doug Grassman Commemorated.
RICHMOND, Va., February 12—In this correspondence of last week the statement was made that the House of Delegates of the Virginia Legislature had passed a measure appropriating $12,500 for the establishment of a school for the Afro-American Deaf, dumb and blind children of the State. This was a mistake, as the appropriation was for improvements at the white deaf, dumb and blind institute. There are, however, two bills pending, one in the House and the other in the Senate, which have for their object appropriations for the establishment of such a school. The measure was considered by the joint committee on finance and schools and public institutions one day last week. There were present before the committee, in advocacy of the bill, several white gentlemen, including the blind editor of The Lunbury Advance. Their speeches were most effective. The following day the committee gave a hearing to the Rev. Des. A. Binga, Jr., and W. T. Johnson, lawyer Giles B. Jackson and Editor F. W. Brown of The Returner in support of the measure. These gentlemen made a most excellent impression upon the committee. It seems the consensus of opinion that the bill will be enacted and become a law.
