THE TOPEKA PLAINDEALER.
Roosevelt and Many Others Thought They Were Entertaining the Son of an Indian Chief.
Meet Me at the FAIR
THE N.E.G.K.O has the chance of a life-time to make good. In a few more days the Great Tri State Fair and Industrial Exposition will cease to exist on parur, but will be a stern reality. The eyes of the mighty West are on the Negro, and if he fails, it means that the race will be set back twenty years. Kansas is alive to her sense of it and if our sister states will do equally as well, it will be the biggest thing ever witnessed in the West. THE PLAN DEALER urges that Kansans lose no time in making arrangements for placing exhibits. A Pointer Shall Exhibits to W. A. HILLI, Secretary and Treasurer Tri State Exposition and Fair Association, St Joseph, No.
Reunion of FRIENDS!
A special dispatch to the Chicago Examiner says: Those without the pale of New York society will no doubt be interested to learn that one of the lions of the Smart Set, who has been extensively entertained by Mrs. John B. Drexel, Mrs. John Jacob Astor and others, and whom President Roosevelt has consulted frequently in regard to Indian affairs, is no other than the son of Mrs. Russell Sage's Negro cook.
Though known to the circles of the elite as Antonio Apache, grandson of the famous chief Cochise, this Jusky Beau Brummel began life as a Louisiana pickaniny under the obscure name of "Tony Simpson."
That such is the true identity of a man whom they denounce as the "most fantastic faker who ever fooled New York," is declared by William M. Carey and Elwyn W. Deming, both of whom are well known New York painters of Indian life.
"It is about time the true character of this imposter is made publicly known," said Mr. Cuey. "He is not only a flicker, but a scamp. He is the same Negro who stole a painting from me about nineteen years ago, and in consequence served two years in Sing Sing prison."
"The alleged gambit of Chief Cothue is a trivial," said Mr Deming. "I am glad you are going to expose him, to he has been trailing on the sympathies of a lot of good people who believed he was in it dism."
Antonio Ackle, according to the testimony of Mr. City and Mr. Elwir W. Denning, has been able to exploit the crevality of the Smart Set for the last ten years because he made deception an art. Not only did he spee the Indian in physical appearance, but he also studied the habits and language of the rod skir.
On top of his Attention he has been customed to wear a wig of course, black, Indian hair, which he brushed almost as smooth as patent leather. Those who have won his confidence say that I possess an elaborate investment of calfs with hair in various lengths, and that he sheds one wig to another as his trust is supposed to grow. Finally comes the chin out, when so badly in jumps back to No. 1
Just the natural color of these
tures should impress his claim of
Indian ancestry, he is well to be
his skin with a coat of bronze paint,
doing it so carefully that he has fre-
quently proved it artist for color."
As the horr of the Fifth Avenue drawing too to Autumn Apache has been worth to tell of his early life in the West with a great amount of detail which seemed corollaborative. It was a far different story from that revealed by the two artists who say that he is a humbug. He made no mention to Mrs. Drexel or Mrs. Astor of the fact that about twenty years ago he used to help his Negro mother peel potatoes and drain spinnach in the Nage household.
Installed he boasted that his grand father was the fourth chief Cochise. and that his ancestral realm down in Arizona embarked a territory larger than Coronado. That country even to this day, he said, bore his name And when he was asked about the manners and customs

Where the Great Negro Tri-State Fair and Industrial Exposition Will Be Held Aug. 4 to 10.
Opening Address of Bishop Grant at the Central Baptist Church,!St. Louis July 10, '07.
GENTLEMEN OF THE CONVENTION: We have assembled to consider questions of importance touching the rights and liberties of the state of Missouri. In doing so, every precaution should be taken to guard against conduct or expressions that will create hostility between the races that occupy the domain of this great State.
The inhabitants of the same country should as far as possible do what they can to perpetuate good government and the well being and happiness of all. Some time since the following words appeared in the Christian Advocate, published at Nashville, Tenn.
"Antagonisms between the races in the South are so be deplored. They will work untold harm to both, but the greater to the weaker people. Anything that separates the people South in feeling, purpose and sympathy should not be done. We should do that which will crush out all enmity. We must live side by side, and this should be done neighborly."
I am in perfect accord with these sentiments. Friendly relations and mutual happiness, on a basis of justice and self-respect, are of first importance to both races. There are persons in the North as well as South who do not like the Negro. From them we can expect nothing. The weak and helpless of every nation have friend among the domestic race, and I am thankful to Almighty God that there is no exception to this rule in our broad country.
As soon as the Civil War closed, the friends of humanity in general took the position that true education aimed to plant a love of knowledge, because they knew that universal suffrage demanded universal education, and that education was a better safeguard to liberty than a standing army. They believed in an adherence to truth because it was truth; a reverence for man because he was man; an enthusiasm for liberty because it was the watchword of the Father of our Country, a spirit of kindness because thus dealing with man we can better understand and each other, a sympathy for mankind because such should exist in a common broth thou, and above all a supreme regard for duty to our Creator to our homes and our country. These friends of education have gone on multiplying until they have called their numbers some of the wealthiest and most often invaded America.
Among them are Mrs. Pebody, Carnegie Rockefeller and Miss Ann T. Jones, the latter of Philadelphia, who recently gave one million dollars for rural education in the South. This gift comes at a time when most needed, as there has been of late much discussion among it barring Negro schools from State and in some of the States, and should this calamity fall upon us, we hope that the fund will have been sufficiently increased to take up the work where it was left off by the State. The labor of these philanthropists and self-educating educators, many of whom are still among us, were not wholly without results, in the number of teachers, ministers, physicists, attorneys, editors, the clerical force employed by the government, skilled mechanics and agriculturists demonstrate. We now fear that there is a growing feeling among the

Welcome Negro Business League
Welcome Negro Business League
Topeka Moit Heartily Welcomes Star Coming Meeting.
The National Negro Business League of which Leofer I. Washington is president, will hold its eighth annual convention in Topeka, Kansas, this year, the dates having been fixed for August 15 and 16.
It is the first time in the history of the organization that it has seen such a convention so far west as Kansas.
This league, as it generally knows, is composed of many of the best, most illustrious and industrious men and women of the race, and we may say in a large measure represent the wealth, business acumen and intelligence of the race. And when we say intelligence do not mean to connote the terms literary attainments, but we mean that men and women who do things who occupy themselves or themselves are living and practical examples to the world and business world that could be well explained. Also and women of every wealth are represented in this great concourse of industry that is soon to invade. For the time the broad and inviting plains of history, Kannan.
Largely the majority of those clerking will come from the North, East and South, some as delegates, and many as friends of the League who will make the trip to see the West as a matter of curiosity and personal pleasure. The tendrance will be large, we dare say, the largest in the history of the League in point of delegates enrolled.
What will the West do? To what extent will we contribute to this splendid galley of the commercial and business world? Is it not the most important moment to place ourselves favorably there of the more distant parts who are soon to become our guests?
it will be a splendid opportunity in the North, South, East and West to touch the cord of common brotherhood and for three days drink from the same fountain that will be filled with the rain. Of economy, thrift and industry. There has never been a time in history of this Republic when there was greater necessity for a common understanding as to the best methods of making a life worth living. Of realizing a life not only enjoyable to the mind or a common try but to the world.
the program for this session will be rife with seed thoughts, thoughts when once a crop will take root and seed forth a hundred fold. The brooklyn to be seeded from this meeting, especially to the West is calculable. The opportunity will not rises we begin to to take it seen until it is past.
To the end therefore, that we in West especially, may be able to grow and hold all the benefits that are derived from the meeting it is expected that in each community (any and country alike) Leagues — Business League — be organized and delegated at once to attend this meeting and all business men and women forth every possible method to be tendered and bear the program.
The committee on transportation is assured of a rate of not over one and one third farce for the round trip and the benefit of those who may avail themselves of the opportunity.
Topeka most heartily extends to all her warmest and best right hand. The necessary committees have been appointed and ample accommodations for all will be provided. A most hearty remission will be extended.
Further information will be given by addressing Ira O. Guy, first vice president National Negro Business League, at 311 West 14th street, Topeka, Kansas.

THE ST. JOSEPH FAIR.
From the reports received here today Kansas seems to be leading in preparing for the exhibit. People are going wild and are making preparations for horse races, walking exhibits and all the things which go to show what Kansas has. Missouri is mad better get a move on herself or it will be a Kansas I'm instead of a TriState Fair in St. Joseph. Everybody remember this is to be one of the greatest of Negro exhibits of industry that has ever taken place in the history of the Negro in the United States. Thousands of dollars will be paid in premiums. Everybody should take advantage of the opportunity. The ladies are making great preparation and will have art and other fancy work on exhibit
Hon. J. B. Foraker and Hon. W. F. Vernon will be among the speakers at the St. Joseph Fair. This will be quite a treat and everybody should attend themselves of the opportunity to hear them.
Mr. H. C. Wilson, a popular resident man, who runs an eating house opposite the Santa Fe depot, will place you exhibition at the Fair one of his two houses and hotels.
Mrs. C. I. Chingscale, wife of Prof. Chingscale will place on examination at the St. Joseph Fair some of her most hand-painted china, which was burned in her own kiln.
Messrs. Wm. Brooks, the horseman, Al Haley, Nels Richardson, James Clayborne, Henry Dunn, Jeff Johnson, John Lee and Judge A. M. Thomas are preparing to enter their fast trotters at the St. Joseph Fair.
It is rumored that Dr. O. A. Taylor and Chas Lytle will enter their

Mrs. Annie McCord left for Oklahoma City, Wednesday, to visit her daughter, Mrs. Washington.
M. M. Greer is getting along nicely. We hope to see him out in a few days.
Rev. J. H. Van Lue will preen at Shiloh next Sunday, in the absence of the pastor, Rev. Fishback, who left Wednesday for Columbus, Ohio, to look after some matters for the Foreign Mission Board of National Baptist Convention.
The Midland Jubilee Singers were registered at the Bailey Hotel last week as was also Mr. L. L. Jones, vice president of the Black Diamond Development company.
Miss Maude Albertus arrived one day last week from Omaha to attend the funeral of her cousin, Miss Lottie Ewing. While here she was the guest of the Bailey sisters.
Hon. W. W. Fisher, financial secretary and purchasing agent for Western University, has purchased a valuable piece of property in Kansas City, Kansas, where he and his family will reside.
The G. V. O. O. P. and the Household of Ruth held their grand session at Salina last week, and Mr. D. D. Hope, one of the delegates says this was one of the greatest sessions ever held and that they were never entertained any better since the existence of the order in Kansas. The white citizens were courteous and assisted the colored people in entertaining the delegates. They took their automobiles and drove the ladies over the city. The following officers were elected: Thos. Glover, Winduta, District Grand Master; Mr. Bissett, Chatot, Sec.; Mr Shoba, Salina, Treasurer; Cora Yeager, Lawrence, Grand Noble Governor; Miss L. M. Carson, Popeka, Secretary.
POSTPONED
To the Pastors and Churches of the Smicky Hill River Baptist Association. You are hereby notified that our association date has been changed from August 6 to August 20th, 1907, on account of church not being finished. So, govern yourselves accordingly and be on hand at Nicodemus, Kas., August 20, it is. m. The program that we have sent out already will be used with the exception of the date.
Great preparations are being carried by the colored people of St. Joseph, for the coming fair August 4-9. Remember they have several thousand premiums to give to those who have exhibits. There will be horse racing, trotting and pacing at this fair. Let every person who has a horse to exhibit or to enter write WA Hill, secretary. There will be thousands from all over Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska to attend the Negro Tri State Fair.

Mrs. I. Amasa Knox, of Kansas City, is fast becoming noted as a lawyer from the fact that she holds the other down when her husband is away. Last week while he was attending the grand session of the Knights of Pythia she contacted and closed up some very important business.
Mrs. Louisa Knott entertained at a delightful breakfast Monday, for Mrs. John H. Patterson. The table was decorated with sweet peas and satin ribbon strung from the chandelier and tied in large pink bows on each corner of the table. After breakfast Capt Louis Knott of No. 4 Fire Station, took the guests for a drive.
Mrs. A. K. Hightower and Miss Mary Hightower entertained at 6 o'clock dinner last Friday, complimentary to Mrs J. E Lewis and her daughter, Alberta, of Wichita, Kas. Those present: Mrs C. G. Fishback, Messrs. W. W. Plumb, H. I. Monroe, and Wm. Green and their wives, Chas, Lyle, Harrold Monroe, J. H. B. Taylor and Miss Kate I. Woodson. A very pleasant evening was spent.
Benevolent Grand Lodge will convene at Topeka next week. This will be one the most important sessions held for years. A large number of delegates from Kansas and Oklahoma will attend. All are invited to be present at the Grand Reception at the Metropolitan hall Tuesday night, July 20, at which time a most excellent program will be rendered. The citizens of Topeka are invited to attend this grand entertainment and meet their out of town friends. The committee will furnish all with refreshments.
ENTERTAINMENT FUND!
The ways and means committee of the Topeka Colored Business League, consisting of I O Guy, Clay Odeil, Mrs Mary Kirk, Archie Biggee, Wallace Williams, Prof WK Catter, Dr E S Lee, Prof C F Clinkscale, Fred Roundtree and Nathawiel Sawyer are perfecting arrangements and putting forth strenuous efforts to raise sufficient funds for the proper entertainment of the National Negro Business League which convenes in our city August 14th, 15th and 16th
As this is the first time a meeting of the league will be held west of the Mississippi River, all indications point to the fact that we will have a great meeting here next month and when we compare our city with Chicago, New York, Atlanta and other large cities where the National league has met, we really recognize the magnitude of the responibility for making complete arrest genetics to prevailing for the crowd which will be here during that week
We therefore appeal to the liberal, ity and goodwill of the citizens of Tepeda to help us make this the banner meeting in the history of the organization, and thereby encourage a striving people to build a so of and sure foundation for the future uplift of the race.
The following blank form will be given to persons authorized to solicit donations.
I hereby subscribe — dollars to the Popeka Colored Business League, payable on or before August 1st, '07, for the purpose of entertaining the National Negro Business League August 14th, 15th and 16th

The harvest is in full blast now and the young men of Ellsworth are getting thurs. They were all home Sunday a few hours but all went back.
Mrs. Alice Gusten was on the sick last week but she is up and around again.
Mrs. Pam Puther went to Lotame visiting with her aunt.
Gustelf brown of Lotame was in Ellsworth Sunday.
The M.L. church will have a rally Sunday July 25, 1907, to pay off the misdresses of their parishion. They have a very neat little church and wish to offer cooperation of all who will help.
Lew P. at Great Selins and post to the Lord's church at Ellsworth was absent Sunday from regular service but he was a help World in a rally.
It is a nice fit to impress to impress upon the people the valuation of the latter but by steady honoring in the same place you can build a very strong stone and I think this one can be broken also.
PUEBLO COLO
We this man gone. After Dublin presides at the latter toward thursday morning, but gone. Mr. Duffy was on honour and upright citizen and lightly respectful all we knew him by his name. His age is twenty-three years long which time he was in theustom business at which he was very successful. He arrived in the city in March from Holley. He had history. At that place he was engaged in the import business and was doing doing mostly, but was his best when he was still telling the story of the hope he gained his life. It was happily on way to was baptised by Presiding Lord Watson. At times it seemed as though he was improving then again his constitution seemed humbly and on Thursday morning he fell down his knees and took up his crown and entered into that final. No mortal eye both over the glances of that land beyond the river. Its crystal sore and on honour scenes around the throne room. It leaves to him his loss in his haveloved wife. In another and a little trouble.

Good advice is always highly appreciated. Truthfulness cannot be too highly exalted, when spoken of by one who has department, honesty, caution and a desire to do right, carried out in a practical daily life; but when these unsaveli elements of a good reputation are spoken of by a smooth-tongued selfish, narrow minded, untruthful and conceived donkey, the words fall upon the heaters simply as the braving of that animal and they remark with dignity. There is nothing in truth, when coming from that source.

Why does your doctor tell you to take this Prescription to LEE'S, 921 Kansas Avenue? Why do so many druggists send to LEE'S for the Drugs with which to fill your Prescriptions?
than any other druggist in the city, and that the druggist who refused to sell you a glass of ice cream soda the other day charges you more for your medicines than Mr. Lee? And did you ever hear of any one being refused anything in Lee's store because of his color? Really, now, do these ideas ever present themselves to you? Why don't you try Lee's Drug Store just once and see if you are not as well pleased as you are with the store that considers you unfit to drink a glass of soda at the counter or soda tables?
Come to our store Sunday evening to Wilson's Orchestra Concert, and see what Lee's Store is like, won't you?
