THE TOPEKA PLAINDEALER. Will White, the Brainy Emporia Editor, Hits the Negrophobist a Hard Blow. VOLUME IX. WHY NOT HAVE JIM Will White, the Brain the Negrophobi The wreat of the Negro phobist who makes the disease a profession for political purposes, has been accused because Bishop Lotter dined with a Negro bishop. The Negro bishop was a man of culture and good conduct, he had risen to his place as head of the colored people's church of his denomination by force of character, and if two bishops had any common question to discuss there was no reason why they should not discuss it at dinner. The question of social equality is not up. There was no talking of the white bishop's children marrying the colored bishop's children. It was merely a meeting for the discussion of plans to bring about peace on earth and good will toward men. It is not recorded that Christ examined the color of a man's skin, and while there is unquestionably good reason against race amalgamation, there is no reason why two gentlemen of the same intellect, status, with the same Christ an art, and the same Christian career should not meet to discuss the common projects and eat what they are talking. If a man can take food from a Negro with an apron, there is no reason why if the Negro is honest, clean and intellective, a man should not eat beside one. And if the Negro is dishonest, dirty and not the man as endeavrable as a dinner companion as a crooked, nasty, stupid white man. If the color line is to be drawn in PROGRESS IN THE SMALL TOWNS! Negroes are Accumulating Money and Property. We make a my niece, pt. Paico and Alma visit week and for a number of trips to our people doing well in making money. At Paico we and M. L. was Dug last and wife, who are idle citizens of the town and can 100 acres of land. We took dinner at their home, and most say we have not had as fine a meal as this one since leaving the South. Mr Henry Johnson who lived in Topeka for a number of years, is employed with the lumber company. He recently married a well to do widow of Maple Hill. Mr. N. Scott is also a prosperous farmer. Mr. J. Jones is the blacksmith, has all the work he can do. This is the line of business that more of our colorete people build engage in. Most of the people on Pax own their homes. At Alma we found everyone prospering and in a very good condition. This is the home of Hon, J. R Hudson, who was elector on the Republican ballot at the last convention and is also a banker. Oscar Smith will be a candidate for attorney general at some later date. The colored people are prospering in this community, all own their homes. There are several prosperous farmers near that town. Mr. Jorry Karuthers and wife own a valuable farm near Alma and are making money. We met Moore brothers who are money makers and own good property. I. H Moore has lived in that community for 20 years and is well lived by all in that town. William, his brother, owns a good home. He Christian work, why not pass a law providing a Jim Crow Heaven! And while he is about it, the Negrophobist should skirmish around and make provisions for a Jim Crow hell—for that's where he is going to have the color question checked up to him with force and emphasis. Perhaps one of the punishments of this old codger will be to sit on the windward side of the kettle full of a lot of real fat, juicy colored sinners of his own moral calibre, and have to keep both hands busy fighting fireflies so that he can't hold his nose! That would be punishment to fit the crime, and the political agitator of the race question has it a coming! Thank Heaven, here is one honest white newspaper man who has come out almost squarely endorsing the teachings of the Savior. Mr. White hit the nail squarely on the head in criticism of the Negrophobists. We have contended all that along if they are going to Jim Crow the Negro here the white man should practice and talk Jim Crowism, and also talk Jim Crow heaven and hell as well. If they believe in divisions on earth they are bound to believe in dividing in heaven. All we have to say is that the colored man continue to progress. ST JOSEPH MO Miss Virginia St. Clos of McMhonan Raine was the guest of Miss Ithal D. Grace last week. Mr. H. Hudson and Lord Ross two of McMhonan's most popular young men were the guests last week at Miss Zelda Gindler and Ithal D. Grace. One of the swellest events of the year was the theater party and supper for Monday night given by some of St. Joeph's most popular young sisters in home of Miss Virginia St. Clos of McMhonan who were the guests of M. Hudlin D. Grace. The South Port School --- NUMBER 44 foot the law was made to say much for the shortness of breath which only comes to those who know how to appreciate the kindness of others. But as he never fails to say something he directed a short pointed and instructive address on the life and works of Sir Rev. Father Dickson. Then by must all matched to the banquet room for supper or later as follows. Kay Frank Wilson and wife, C. G. M. Mr and Mrs L. H. Horton, C. G. M. of Missouri. Mr and Mr L. W. Wilson C. G. Instructor Prof and Mr L. H. President of Western University Member WOULD REQUIRE REFERENCES! Mrs. Mary Church Terrell Attacks Southern Homes in Purity Congress. Holow is the statement made by Mrs. Terrell which shows conclusively what is going on in the South between the races. We are very thankful for the courageous, bold and truthful statement from this highly cultured and influential lady who has but few equals in the land. Women like her are doing much good for the betterment of humanity in this country. Mrs. Mary Church Terrell, president of the National Association of Colored Women, delivered a furious invective against the people of the South before the purity congress in Battle Creek, Mich. recently. "No servant girl is safe in the homes of the white people," she declared, "and no mother who considered her daughter's honor would allow her to become a servant without first requiring references." She declared that all of the states of the South had plotted to shut out the children of the blacks from an education, and that the courts had refused to protect colored women. Mrs Torrell was especially bitter in her condemnation of the women of the South, some of whom she quoted as saying that the Negro women were devoid of honor. "Many of our rich men will gladly give thousands to help my race," she said, "but refuse to give an honest, honorable, educated Negro respectable employment." THE DEATH OF S. J. YOUNG. The many friends of Mr. S. J. Young were paired to learn of his sudden death, which occurred at his home Friday morning, the 2nd. He had just returned from town when he was found dead by his wife. He was lying on the floor with a newspaper in his hand. He was 51 years old at the time of his death. He was a professional cook and a good citizen having lived in Topkali since a child. He was the son of an middle amour, and it any hour of the day, "Uncle Shell" always had a joke on funny yarn to spin for the admiration of his friends. No one ever saw him angry, always polite, courteous and kind, and his broad face always bore a welcome smile for everybody. He was well read, a bright historian and one of the best posted men in the city. His funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the residence on Crane street, Rev. T. J. Carr of the First African Baptist church, obeiating. A great crowd of friends and old timers was present. He leaves a wife to mourn her loss. There were no relatives on his side. The remains were interred in Topkali cemetery. --- ```markdown ``` THE PLAIN LALLEY BROAD PHILADELPHIA NICK CHILES EDITOR 400 PIPELINO AVE. One of them said: I will pay Saturday night of I live. He's dead. Another said. "See you tomorrow" He's blind. Still another said I hope to pay you this week, or go to hell." He's gone." We are in receipt of some literature from the prosperous town of Mound Bayou, Mesa, and a statement of the bank of which Mr. Chas Banks is founder and custor This bank has a deposit of $ Monna lv ore cal in cr) noney P As WE PUBLISHED Below is another statement presi ing what we have been contending all along. That as soon as the selfish whites secured control of the land in the territory they would even exclude the poor Indian. There is nothing in the annals of criminal history that this class of whites would not do. All they know is to suppress the weak. A recent dispatch from Muskogee, I. T. is as follows "Because the whites forced the fullblood Indians out, John D. Benedict closed the Star school near Coweta last week and will refuse to establish at other government school there. Mrs. Lva K. Coleman, the teacher, was transferred to the Sunrise school of Kelleyville. "There were forty white children in attendance at the Star school Encouraged by their parents the children forced the Indians to out the school There were nine Indian children in attendance The school was established for the Indians and the whites were not paying a cent towards its support. Complaint was made by the Indians, which resulted in an immediate order to close the school. "This is the first instance in which Indians have been forced out of school by whites, but Superintendent Benedict says there is a disposition to do so in several other schools and it is persisted in he will summarily dismiss them. Most of the schools are established principally for indians. Mr. Benedict prefers that as soon as regular school district are established and the people get control of the district, the full blood will likely be forced out."
