The State Primary
MULVANE A
GREAT LEADER
Kansas Republicans Owe the Success of 1904 to His Wise Leadership.
But few men in the great state of Kansas have been able to gain and maintain the confidence of the people both in politics and business, as has Hon David W. Mulvane. He is a born leader, and his honesty and fairness in all things has made him a permanent fixture in the heart of every Kansan who desires to see the state grow and prosper.
As national committeeman, he has served the people well. A better pilot has never steered the Republican ship of state than Mr. Mulvane. In 1904 he was at the helm and through his wise leadership, the fair name of Kansas was thoroughly cleansed by giving Roosevelt the largest majority ever given a Republican candidate for president in the state's history. It was the wise, honest and square leadership of Mr. Mulvane that brought the "wanderers home."
The people trust him because his honesty and integrity have been weighed in the balance and
M. M.
found not wanting. Every promise made by Mr. Mulvane, in politics or in business has been fulfilled to the letter, and it is through this method of doing things that he has won the confidence of all classes. Mr. Mulvane is a young man, and his budding genius is the pride of every Kansan, and his advice is sought by rich and poor.
To insure a complete Republican victory in this state, the people want to march under the banner and wise leadership of Mr. Mulvane. He has been vigorously at tacked by cliques and rings, but his honesty of purpose has so thoroughly fixed him in the hearts of the people that nothing has been able to check him.
THE PLAINDRALER desirous of keeping Kansas in the front rank of Republicanism; and to gain a signal victory we must keep that gallant young Kansan, leader, statesman and diplomat, D. W. Mulvane, at the head.
THE PRIMARY LAW.
The primary election bill has passed the legislature and is now law. It is known as the Stables bill.
with a lot of amendments attached which the people will have the pleasure of reading within a few days and which will give them all the information necessary, and should be studied well so that all may be fully aware of the contents so they may seek an office intelligently as well as vote in that manner. The election for this year will be carried in the first Tue day in August and in March thereafter. The candidate receiving the largest number of representative and senatorial districts will be declared nominee for United States Senator. Before one is allowed to vote he must declare his party and be compelled to vote the party ticket. Before one can get on the ticket he will have to have a petition signed by a certain per cent of qualified voters within so many precincts in a county office and if a district office so many counties within the district and the same for the state. The party which signs the petition agrees to sign no other for like office and pledge them their support at the general election as well as primary.
That this law will in time prove profiable to the party remains to be seen, and it or given fair trial it is found not satisfactory, it will be repealed.

CONTINUOUS OVATION,
GARDEN, CITY, KANSAS
Rev. M. Wooten, our presiding elder,
he's our second quarterly meeting on the
10th, which was quite a success, both
spiritually and financially. He spent a
week with me in a retreat and we have
been carrying it on ever since watch
meeting night. The elder rendered us
invaluable service and all who heard him
were pleased.
We had one convert and two joiners
during the time the presiding elder was
with us.

TOPEKA, KANSAS, FRIDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 7, 1908.
CONTINUOUS OVATION FOR PROF. VERNON!
From the Denver Statesman
From the Denver Statesman
Hon. W. L. Vernon has come to Colorado and gone. From the time that he was met at Pueblo by the local committee tee and J. W. Jackson of this city, to his departure from our Union deputy, his trip was one match of triumph. At Pueblo, Colorado Springs and here, the audience rooms were crowded to stand room and the private and public entertainments were limited only by time and endurance. Everyone tried to do his utmost and it is putting it mildly to say that no visitor to our state ever had such royal welcome. Being the foremost origin in point of official position, he married much at our hands, but his personality won over the people in muse. Many at lecture Monday might att rwards said that they came to be entertained but never dreamed of the charm of the creator, the magnification of the head and the power to the statesman. The daily press of the three cities have given extended extracts from his address, but no one but those who heard him knows the thrill and perseverance and the full scope of his scholarship. History gave up her chimes treasures to delight and instruct. Poetry was tended in the multiflush rythm of his diction, gesture and voice united to drive home pregnant ideas.
Others may come who will win the plights of Colorado, but Venom is an uncomplicated fact. Undowed with the qualities that make men great, though yet in his thirties, he is the man of the hour whom the West, from which he springs, delights to climb his own. Personally sentiments were his closing remarks when he said:
In spite of the remarkable achievements of the race, disfranchisement is now being practiced in certain sections of our country. Deprived of the right to vote, which means the right of protection and representation in a government which he is taxed to support the attendant costs of prescription, "Ium Crow" cars, punishment without trial by jury are making well high intolerable conditions for a race of people whose history in war, whose loyalty through all the stress and onward march of American can not be contested. As a result of these impostes, taken the source of wealth in any community, is becoming resilient and is migrating to more inviting fields.
The South today is strangling industries with the past of the world. The bombing up of this section can not be accomplished without the labor of the negro. Those people, disbelieved against with their schools immigrating, are not given an opportunity to do the best within them, and thus give to their country the spiritual efforts which they could otherwise give. Blind, indeed, to right and justice, blind to the best interests of our country, is he who detract to any class of our opinions that which he asks for himself. As a true we must remember that education, sobriety, thrift and energy are the qualities which will give to us success, permanent and lasting.
While seeking industrial opportunities and programs in the business world, the spiritual side, which has to do with life culture art, science, culture and soul growth should not be neglected. The thousands of engineers in the professions throughout the country are a benefit to the race and should be appreciated and supported. Having seen the possibilities of the race in the various sections of the country, I am convinced that the negro of the Middle West and West has opportunities equal to the best. Here in the most of a growing developing population, with low racial antigens and discriminations than are found elsewhere, I believe the race can use its highest possibilities.
I would advise that we remain here and work out our destiny. We shall then be a source of inspiration to the true everywhere, and can nurture to us the four minded friends of the opposite race who will help us to stand for the fullest freedom of our people throughout America.
At the close of the lecture 100 bourneters, as the invitation of the Lincoln Republican Club, assembled in the lecture room of shorter church, where, after a spread, they were regaled with toasts and music. The banquet was the finest in the history of Denver. The savvy, which was under charge of Owen Cassell and his most expert assistants, had been total surroundings, both in tableau and the decorations of the room. The toast master, Capt Thomas Campbell, the president of the club, Dr. Spartell, Prof Vernon and the speakers were at the hand table with three others stretching away from it at which were seated the youth, the beauty, the wit and wisdom, the wealth and honor of our city. The opening address of Dr. Spartell, showing the frutiful soil of the West and expelliots of Denver, as productive for greatness, the apt saliets of wit of the toastmaster in introducing the speakers, as well as the coasts themselves were peculiar. Mrs. Ida De Priest responded to "Woman Suffrage in Colorado." Ggo. W. Glow, the melon raiser, and the only elective negro official in Colorado, filled in the vacancy made by the unattold absence of J. R. Jackson, and predicted things of "The West" that made glab the hearts of all. Mrs. Minerva Matlock Jackson of Boulder, a former teacher of the Regiment at Lincoln Institute, handled "In the Institute and West in University" with borneer ease. Lunar Storm in behalf of the kansas class class "Unity" for the theme. Ray Hanks, for the shipper club printed a wide picture of fun
trumpphant rise of our race, already symbolized by the success of such man as the guest of honor, C. A. Franklin wished for "The Press" a future of achievement and not merely of complaint and criticism. Wayman Ward, a son of Res. Ward, assumed his father's toast, welcoming "Our Guest" to Dinner. Then in a mat speech, full of the sincerity that characterizes the man, Prof Vernon thanked the citizens of Colorado individually and collectively for his reception. He hoped that this section of which he was a part, might become powerful by taking advantage of it opportunities, that its bright skies and wonderful promise might not be neglected by the race. He praised the banquet and lecture audience without stint and wished to be quoted as saying that the former was the finest that had ever been tendered him any where. Mrs. A. Iroman and N. G. Walk or also spoke.
Social and Otherwise.
While here Prof Vinson was the guest of Rev. A. M. Ward, an old friend in Kansas. On the occasion of his departure Rev. Ward entertained at breakfast in his honor, amusing the committee of Coloradons who had been in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Ward is a chaining hostess and the conclusion of the regurgit's stay was a fitting tauus. On his arrival, he was the guest of honor at a dinner tendered him at the Rhine Café by C. A. Franklin. The other guests were J. W. Jackson, Dr. Spartin, Rev. Ward, G. A. McLoughlin, Thos. Campbell and Gee. W. Gross of Rocky Lord for this purpose the private dinner room was progress in national colors and flowers. The table was elaborately festooned with ribbons radiating from the center as if to typify "all for one and one for all." All the skill of the propriator had been lavished upon the preparations and when the tukuen, preparations and garnished, was washed in, with the good things of earth thinking it, all pled tribute to the chef's skill. After the dinner service, which was faultless in the hands of Miss Judy Brown, cigars and conversation drew the honour out till midnight before the party broke up. The Register went over many things vital to the negro race in a whole and the Western negro especially and the guests were filled with the possibilities we have. The patricide setting be one i stand, with life and the ravages of good purpose were gathered up and woven into a common web.
The host and Mr. Hutton of the Rhone
were given many congratulations upon
the spread and the guest of honor was

Sunday morning Shortor church was packed to the site with persons eager to hear the man of food spank His words. Dr. Vernon was at his host and spoke on "The two-labot Man." He outlined what the man of small or naughty attentions could do in life and the extra burden that lay upon him to apply effort and brains that he might safely pass the途 of his existence and line up with the workers for social and moral uplift. Ms. Ht. Dr. Prost entertained in his honor Sunday afternoon at dinner. Her guests were J. W. Jackson, J. R. Jackson, Theo Campbell, Gee, W. Gross, C. W. Franklin, Rev. Ward, Dr. Vernon and Mr. Dr. Prost. The feast was too good for the time was short before the visitor must appear at the Alliance. Having been his host at his coming four years ago before such signal honor came to him, Dr. Vernon was the more grateful for this evidence of the continuation of her system. At the Alliance the acting president, J. M. Mison, called upon lawyer Stenant to introduce the visitor, after which he responded with words of wisdom and advice upon relations as a race, one to another. Frequent applause interrupted his speech and he was voted an honorary member of the Alliance.
J W Jackson and J. D Rivers entertained him at their respective home in the evening.
Mr and Mrs Chas Muse entertained at an exceptionally well appointed dinner Monday afternoon, having as his guests Hew, Ward, J W, Jackson C, A Franklin, Dr Knuthner, Geo. W. Goss, Mira, Tallie Moore and the guest of honor She was assisted in serving by Misses Thinkles and Wallis.
Monday he was shown over the city by the reception committee, saluting upon the governor and the other state officials, the mayor, the U.S. Mint and several prominent citizens and banking institutions that expressed the desire of having the honor of a visit from him. He left Tuesday noon, a tired but deeply grateful man, with the best wishes of a multitude that had listened to him, and their gratitude for an instructive visit. Three thousand persons in a small estimate of those who heard him in this city alone, and they one and all will look forward to the future, hoping that he may come again. The young people, especially the alumnus of Lincoln Institute, the Kansas Club, the None Such Club, the Sly Spy, all of whom paid him special honor at the banquet, have been inspired by his example of the light load that color is when real merit essays to rise. Vale! Vermont!

The Negro in Politics
The Negro in Politics
A graphic political history of the Negro in the United States has been presented in an engraving just issued, entitled, "Colored Congressmen." Alabama sent three colored men to Congress; Florida sent one; Georgia, one; Mississippi sent two to the Senate and one to the House of Representatives; Louisiana and Virginia sent one each; North Carolina sent four, and South Carolina heads the list by sending eight. This engraving contains excellent portraits of these twenty-two representatives of the race, the date of their service and the Congress in which they served. It is sold by The Colored American Novelty Company, of Washington, D. C., and is not only unique and attractive in appearance, but shows graphically the political status of the Negro.

Mr Ambrose Rice died Feb'y 21 at Kieth's hospital. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from Stone street and Hamilton's undertaking establishment. Interment in Topeka cemetery. Two brothers and three sisters survive him. Mr. Rice was an old resident of Topeka, having lived here for more than a quarter of a century. His chief occupation was contractor and stonemason. He was famous as a breeder of fine horses, and his hiking for such was shown by the number of fine horses he had raised. Among those that made a record on the track were Lady Lamber, Fly Wheel, Lady Jack and Black Reel. The latter was the most famous of all, and was considered the finest pacer in the West. When taken east by Mr. Zack Randall, the driver for Mr. Rice, she made a fine record. Mr. Rice owned property in the city and was an honest, industrious mat, well liked by all who knew him
Robert and John Wood, two young men living several miles west of Strong City, closed a deal last
week for the sale of 160 mules to the Sparka Bros Commission Company of Kansas City. The mules were nearly all between two and three years old and were the largest part of the big bunch which the Woods have been feeling this winter. The amount received for them was between $20,000 and $25,000. They probably raise and hand more horses and mules each season than any other men in Chase county, and are among the best judges of horse flesh in the state. The bench of mules which they have just sold were in excellent condition and it was the largest sale they have ever made at one time. Mr John W. of the firm will be in the city this week visiting his sister, Miss I. Wood

Her many friends will regret to learn of her illness which was caused by a recent operation at the hospital. She has almost recovered and will soon be at her post again.
