TPE KA PLAINDEALER ‘VOUME Xi TOPEKA, KANSAS, FRAT MORNING OCT. 28,10, SSSSSCUMBER OG If Governor Stubbs Wants to Reform Liquor Drinkers, He Should Begin With Dolley! STUBBS EXCHANGED COATS MORNING OF LYNCHING! Finger of Suspicion Points Stronger to the Then Wild Roscoe and Warm Friend of the Mob Leader. IS GOVERNOR W. R. STUBBS GUILTY? The People Await His Answer on This Important Matter. Is Gov, Stubbs guilty of participating in the lynching of the lynching of the three colored men at Lawrence onthe Lord's day June 11, 1882 when Peter Vinegur, I-aac King and George Roberts were hanged frum the Kaw river bridge? We asked the Governor if he was guilty of assisting in this henious crime, but up to this writing he has failed to affirm or deny. In many in- stances silence gives consent, hence we take it for granted that he participated in the American white man’s favorite pastime— lynching Negroes on the morning of June t1, 1382. This question is not ask for political reasons, but to prove him unfit to fill the highest office in the gift of the people of Kan- sas if he is guilty of such an act. We conversed with several Lawrence people in regard to the Governor's connection with the affair. One party said that he was associated with the ring leader of the mob. That the Goveraor was wild and wrackless at the time, that he was oa the streets the morning of the crime, that he EXCHANGED COATS witha man. Now Governor, how can a man who poses as a Chaistian gentleman remain silent under such strong suspicion! Tell the people of Kansas where you were Sunday morning June rith, the Lord’s day when Peter Vinegar, Isaac King acd George Robertson were hanged from the Kaw civer bridge. Surely you cannot forget such an important event. You ought aot be afraidto admit it. You will not be molested. The Lord has forgiven you and since you are governor you can forgive yourself and protect your liberty. The old timers in Lawrence say that you was prominent with your gang at that time and everything went with you. | Governor, tell the people why you have not shown a dis- position to act in the case of George Williams, a wealthy young colored farmer, who was deiven from his home at Pratt, Kas., because he purchased a fine house near some white people. A mob called on Williams and informed him that he would not be permitted to live in his owa property. Mr. Williams called on Governor Stubbs and upto this time nothing has been done by him to apprehend the leaders. His voice has never been raised to warn the perpetrators to cease intimidating this man. His sympathy scems to be with mobs. Did he acquire this in’ Lawrence on June s1th, 1882? Governor, please tell the people with WHOM YOU EX. CHANGED COATS on Sunday morning June ttth, 1882? ' QUITS FAKE INSURANCE CO. John B. Fleming Severs His Connection With the Knights and Ladies of Protection. The fake order, the Knights and Ladies of Protectlon is los- ing ground, J, 8B. Fleming, one of the Jeading business men of Horton has resigned as directors of the hold-up order He stid that he believed the arder on the square unfil a certain trans- action came to his notice and that he could not and would not stand for it. He quit paying on his policy sometime ago. Mr. Fleming came to Topeka lust week and told President James tt Guy that he was done with the order. Mr. Fleming said int he would not be a party to anything to dupe the hard-work- ing people of the race or any- one else, On the eve of going to press we are informed that J. G, Groves, treasurer of the order, has sworn to a warrant for the arrest of the editor of this paper ut Kansas City, Kansas, but up to this time af has net been served If he swears ou' one every day, it will not deter us frum exposing the fake order of which he is treasurer, He. knows the order hus did crooked things and cannot pay their) loses should any number occuy within a short period. We warn the race to beware of this wild oat skin game. Was Stubbs Playing Poker? Hon. Nick Chilea desires that Hon. Stabbe prepare an alibi. Hon. Niok eays that Hon. Roscoe ia sus. peoted of having arasted in lynoh jag some colored gents. Now, if Hon. Stubba can just remember who held the thres other hands in the harness room of that Lawrence livery stable that Sabbath morning, he oan produce the alibi, and eet the troubled spirit of Hon, Nick at rest.—-Topeka State Journal. This was no doubt a good, stiff poker game and perhaps explains how Hon. Stubbs ob- tained a'million dollars. The Smithvale Telephone Co., owned and operated exclusively by Negroes, is doing a great work and extending to the youths of the race a great opportunity of building up and cementing themselves into one of the biggest corporations controlled by Colored People. In order for anything great to succeed, it must have the confidence of its people accompanied by some money. In the great State Capitol Campaign, many of us paid one dollar for a tag or button in order that the state enterprise may be a success. Let me ask you to think seriously upon a business proposition that will mean much to us as a race. Do you have confidence enough in your race to believe they can bring things to pass? Do you believe that they can control and operate business concerns as well as the white race? If so, think on the business outlook of the Smithvale Telephone Co. owned and controlled by your own race, and allow yourself to be tagged to foster an enterprise that will mean much for our own boys and girls. We hope every person who desires to see Negro Corporations succeed that they may give employment to our own people, will pay 25c for one of these souvenirs of the Smithvale Telephone Co. MR RIPLEY'S SPEECH. Gov. Stubbs and his calamity howlers should have heard President Ripley, General Attorney Rhienhart and Attorney Bleed officers of the great Santa Fe, at the Auditorium yesterday evening. They removed the mask from the Stubbs crowd and proved that Stubbs is ignorant as to railroad affairs and makes false statements in order to keep before the public and gain a tighter grip on his office. The railroads desire to earn enough to pay the stockholders a fair interest on the capital invested as does other business enterprises. The wages of the employees haveibeen increased as has everything utilized by the railroads. How can they exist if they are not permitted to increase the rate on freight or something to keep the expenditures and pay a fair return on the investment Several hundred people heard the speeches and will vote against him and calamity. Of the 195,000 Republican votes cast for Stubbs in 1908, he only received 80,000 at the August primaries. Please tell us how Dolley can forecast a majority for Stubbs. If he receives 40,000 more than he did at the primaries, it will surprise his closest followers. The strength of the actiue party' vote was polled last August. S. H. Haynes, county assesor. is a good business man and will receive a large majority. He knows what is needed in the office and a change would be silly indeed. Why don't the farmers get their eyes open and get wise to this grand-stand player, W. R. Stubbs. The people in the cities and towns are are on to him. His reformation was too sudden to mean much good. Amputate the head of the Republican ticket. Stubbs is not a Republican' Vote for Mr. Hodges, the clean business man of Olathe. Colored people who have known him from childhood ask that you support him. --- Politics in Other Counties. WYANDOTTE COUNTY. Samuel Stewart, republican candidate for treasurer of this county, is a man of high integrity-one who will give the people a good, clean square, honest administration. He conducted a grocery on North James street for twelve years and for the last fourteen years has been located on Minnesota avenue. He has matured judgment, and is in every way fitted for this the most responsible office in the gift of the people of Wyandotte county. He is worthy and deserving of your suffrage. Vote for A. L. Becker, candidate for sriff of Wyandotte county for the second term. He is a good man clean, honest, upright and industrious and has served the people well. Give him another term. ATCHISON COUNTY. Hon. James W. Orr, candidate for representative of the Third district, Atchlson county, is one of the substantial and distinguished jurists of the West. A man so well versed in the law that few attorneys like to oppose him in law suits. He was mayor of Atchlson and served the people well. Has numerous friends who admire his pluck and energy. LEAVENWORTH COUNTY. The voters of Leavenworth county should vote for Judge B. F. Endres for judge of that district. He has served the people as judge of the city. He is a man well versed in the law. This is the height of his ambition. He has worked to show the people that he deserves it. He is honest, upright and courteous, not cold-blooded, like some we know who want the office. Vote for Eudres and you vote for a man full of principle and honest in all his dealings. Vote for Endres and all will be well. W. H Courtney, candidate for sheriff of Leavenworth county will be elected sure. He is very popular. Born in the county, knows everybody and everybody likes him. W. E. SCHLICHTER. candidate for sheriff has lived in Shawnee county for 21 years and has been foreman of the Dibble Grocery for seven years. He is a young man who stands high with the people. Prof. Hawkins for Bowen EDITOR PLAINDEALER; No greter pleasure could be accorded me than saying a word in behalf of Prof. D. M. Bowen, candidate for state superintendent, as I have served as principal and supervisor of the colored schools under him for nearly ten years, and I have always found him thoroughly alive to the interest of our race, also conservative and totally unbiased. It is due to his conservative and unprejudiced administration that the present harmony exists between the whites and blacks in our High school. In fact our people appreciate his former services so much that they have banded themselves JOHN H. BURKE PROF DAVID BOWEN. together into an organization, known as the "Bowen Club," and every member intends to cast their vote for him, as the office of state superintendent has been removed from politics, and furthermore this third term idea does not impress us as a very plausible one. I have known him the entire time during his superintendency and I never knew him to give our race anything other than a square deal. You will find him the same at all times, a perfect gentleman, honest, thoroughgoing, fair, conservative and actively alive to the interest of both races. Respectfully, E. J. HAWKINS. Principal and supervisor of Colored Schools, Ft. Scott, Kas. We visited the Soldiers' home a few days ago. This is the most beautiful spot in Kansas, located three miles south of Leavenworth on a section of land under the supervision of Governor Sidney G. Cook, formerly of Marion, a distin guished looking gentleman, past sixty-five years of age, a soldier, scholar and gentleman of the best he knows his men and respects them and looks after everything pertaining to their welfare. The old boys of '01 have all that life can wish in the home—music, opera, restaurants, lunch stand, a large, spacious dining hall where over a thousand sit down at a time, pretty girls to wait on them, hospital, parks, boats, amusements of all kinds. There are 2,200 inmates, of whom 1,000 are on jurloughs. The boys get homestick, especially those who have homes. Those who do not, take life easily. There are quite a number of colored soldier, who speak well of the governor, as everyone does. We sometime wish we were an old soldier, so that we might enjoy all the free hospitality extended by Uncle Sam to his boys. The many friends of Rt Rev Bishop Abram Grant will be sorry to hear of his serious illness and wish for him a speedy recovery --- Mrs Phemie Devine, who has been visiting in Kansas City, Mo for the past three weeks, has returned, and reports having been highly entertained by friends in that city Mr Joseph Gaines, railway mail clerk on the Kansas City and Tulsa line with headquarters at Kansas City. Mo, spent Thursday in the city with parents and friends Frank B Sims of the North Side candidate for county commissioner, needs no introduction to the voters and taxpayers of Shawnee County He has served the people well in the past and will continue to do so in the future The Chancel Chapter of St Simon's Guild met Tuesday evening at the home of Miss Hattie Freeman, Second and Jackson --- William Dickson, cannidate for county clerk, is in every way worthy of both the office and your suffrage He believes in honest fair and square deal to men, regardless of creed, color or condition He believes that if a colored man is competent, capable and worthy of filling a position no should be given the same Zimmerman has told the blacks that he did not want them Now, are you going to have the gall to vote for him? The Best Canned Fruits are the Official Call of the Western Negro Press Association Pursuant to a general custom and by virtue of the power vested in me, after conference with the executive committee and other officers, we have called the Fourteenth Annual Convention of the Western Negro Press Association, to convene in regular session in Muskogee, Okl., Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26 1910, for the purpose of discerning all things pertaining to the growth, development and advancement of human society, and especially the welfare of the African race. Realizing that the pen is the most potent power when it is rightly used, for the betterment of civilization and the ultimate solution of all social, industrial, economic and political problems of this century; therefore, we call upon the editors, correspondents, publishers, journalists and co-workers, book and magazine writers, and men and women engaged in the industrial arts allied to newspaper work, to meet with us there in regular session, with papers, journals, etc., to be read and discussed at this meeting, pertaining to the real needs of our downtrodden struggling race. All papers are asked to be no longer than ten minutes, except those that are specially invited. The discussion will only be eight minutes, unless by common consent. All publications west of the Mie. nissippi are elligible to membership annual dues $1. This meeting will bring together some of the leading orators and thinkers of the country and the program when published will bear out this statement. Urging the press to publish this call, and hoping to meet the members of our fraternity in our annual meeting. Witness my hand, this 14th day of September, 1910 JOHN L.
