SEDALIA, MISSOURI Saturday, NOVEMBER 16 1901 Notwithstanding a widely current rumor that the kev Irl R Hicks was ead, he ever was in letter health, a d never did a harder and more successful year's work than that just closing. He has just completed his lage and splendid Almanac for 1902 and, with his staff of able workers, has brought his journal, Works and Works, justly forward into international reputation. For a quarter of a century Mr Hicks has grown in reputation and usefulness as the people's astronomer, and forecaster of storms and the character of coming seasons. New were his weather forecasts sought after as now, his timely warning of a serious drouth this year having aved the people from less and suffering. Millions of bushels of wheat were harvested through his advice to plant crops that would mature arly. The American people will certainly stand by Prof Hicks, when it cost them so little and the benefits are so great. His fine Almanac of 200 pages is only 25c, and his splendid family journal is only one dollar a year including the Almanac. Send to WORD AND WORKS Pub Co, 2201 Locust St Louis, Mo. POTATO RACE ENTERTAINMENT. The Ladies of the Tabernacle gave that they called a potatoe race entertainment at Ce ternail hall last night. The price of admission was for every person to bring a potatoe, and by so doing they had a large number of large and small potatoes, when the race came on the potatoes were equally divided and two small boys raced to see who could get them up the quickest, with a spoon. As some of them were very large it created lots of fun to see them tassle them about. The race was won by the Combs boys who were rewarded with a few grapes. Refreshments were served and all enjoyed them lives NELSON CHASES A SQUIRREL Last Thursday quite a number of our young men spen, the day chasing rabbits and squirrels, among whom wore Tom Irean, Jim scott, tce Nelson Ed Gravitt, WJ Williams and others. Don't forget the quarterly meeting tomorrow at the A M E church. Automobiles will soon be cut of style for women. But few respect able persons wear them. The mayor and alderman have begun a good work on the north side by putting in street crossings. Why can't the president of the Twentieth Century Forum Club call the members together and get down to business? The cold chilly winds of November have driven the leafers off the streets and their little game of of panhunting for a "can" has received a sudden check. If the Negroes of Missouri wish to be prosperous they must brush up their thinking faculties and voting capacity and help change the name of Old Missouri to New Missouri. The Broad Ax sees to be using its ax in trying to how Booker T Washington down. But now that Booker has a start up the hill let him go. He will make way for someone else to follow. Gov Dockery, Butler and the rest of the ringleads of the democratic party are beginning to think that the great change in old Missouri is near at hand—not to exceed a year at the farthest. And then you will hear something drop and down will go Old Missouri and up will come a grand New Missouri. Gov. Dockery has issued his proclamation appointing the 28th of this month as a day of thanksgiving and prayer, in connection with the eating of fat turkeys, ducks, chickens and 'possums. Gov Dockery did not mention the eating part but he knows that it takes all of that to show a grateful and devout spirit. These white people who are so afraid of honorable, social equality in the daytime, should be equally consistent in being afraid of it in night time. This rising generation is having a mighty suspicious streak of white in its anatomy which throws the burden of suspicion upon some of these foremost rauting Negro haters. Does any one remember that during President Grover Cleveland's first term he entertained Fredeick Doug ass at a Congressional reception at the White House and that Douglass sat next to him and that he also dined Lilloukalani, the deposed queen of Hawaii, whose skin is as dark as that of a Negro? We do. On the arrival of Gen J B Gordon of Georgia to lecture at Kokomo, Ind., he was met by John Russell, a colored man and a former slave, of the Gordon plantation. Russell has lived in Kokomo since the civil war. He went to the station to meet his former young master, they being about the same age and played as boys together. The meeting was an agreeable surprise to General Gordon and the aged colored man was wild with delight. The latter occupied a seat on the stage at the lecture. Now that cold weather is about to set in, and as there are not many places for the men to go at night, it would appear as if this was an opportune time for our so-called leaders to get together and organize some kind of a club or league to build up the Negro's cent in Sedalia, and not waste their time by sitting around someone's fireside telling "fairy tales." The time has come when we as men of our race must get together and have an understanding with each other. There is much work for us to do in helping our elves and helping our city to prosper. The white papers of our city are called on the white business men every day to get together and pull and work in order to build up the town. The question arises are we not citizens too, and is there not work for us to do in the push for progress? And when the rush comes we can share our part, even though our aims may be ever so small, yet they are much in the sight of those who are leading and carrying the greatest burden. We must not always stand back and wait for some one to call or force us to do what we as citizens should do for our city; and we earnestly seek to impress it upon the minds of the Negro business element of our city to get together while the winds from the north come and we have nothing else to do, and perfect a good and firm organization regardless of political opinions, get on a solid foundation and do something for the betterment of our race and that of the city of Sedalia. A Negro business men's league would be a good name to work under. Let it consist of only business men professional men and real laboring men who have the interest of their race and the city at heart—men who live by the sweat of their brow and not from someone else. The Twentieth Century Forum Club which was organized last year was a good one, but from the lack of attendance was forced to go down. But do not let such good things stay down. Get under them, good men, and stay under them, for the time is coming and it won't be long, when we will bow our stout heads in sorrow because we did not keep up such organizations among ourselves. We say again: Men! Ch men, men of families, men of education, get together now and do something for yourselves and race. MISSOURI PACIFIC RAILWAY From Infancy To Age MOTHER AND CHILD Laxakola for Babies—It is the best and most effective remedy for children. BEST because it is pure and safe being made entirely of harmless ingredients. BEST because it is non-irritating and never grips or causes pain or irritation. BEST because it is sure and never fails. BEST because "Children like it and ask for it." BEST because its tonic properties are so good and so strengthening that it keeps the little ones in fine, hearty condition. It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent catharines that it keeps the little ones in fine, hearty condition. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fever it is invaluable. A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels, and carries out the cause of the fermentation. My baby is a months old and is nothing. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and that I would never pull him through perforation, this caused him to be setting worse, I stopped giving him his medicine, so he could keep nothing on his stomach, and was treated with colic very much, unlucky to someone when he had a trouble it. I did know what it was to close my eyes day or night. I gave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I gave it to him a few tises, and it worked like a charm, and he hown rests pretty fair all night. He is a great deal better than his mother, him LAXAKOLA and I think if all mothers know how good it was, they would give nothing else to their sick babies. Laxakola for Young Girls on the threshold of womanhood, has been found invaluable. When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing. Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results. It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up. Laxakola for Mothers. It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals. It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause. To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure. What Mrs. Edw. Pugh, E. Palestine, O., Box 125, says about LAXAKOLA. "March 11, 1901. Received your free sample, it has done so much good, send me a 30c. bottle." March 28. "Bottle came sage, did me a lot of good, druggist here, don't keep it, so enclosed is 30c, please send me quickly another bottle. The last bottle did me so much good I want another at once." April 15th. "Borrowed is 30c, for one more bottle LAXAKOLA. It has done much good." Laxakola for Old Folks--In the Autumn and Winter of Life, when the various organs through long years of action have become more or less sluggish, it becomes necessary to stimulate them by some remedy best adapted to that purpose. So long as the stomach and bowels are doing their work properly and the liver and kidneys are active and strong, your food is assimilated properly, your blood is kept pure and rich, and your nerves are strong. The feeling of nervousness, general weakness and debility means that the whole system is run down and needs a general toning up. That LAXAKOLA DOES IT, has been proved beyond all question. Its gentle warming, soothing action on the bowels, liver and kidneys, stimulates them to increased activity, cleanses the blood, quickens the circulation, and puts the whole system in a condition of health and enables it to ward off disease, while its tonic properties tone up the system and keep it healthy. Laxakola Does It. Blotched, sallow, unwholesome and muddy skin, with its consequent mortification, often leading to morbid seclusion and aversion to society and friends, and to a lack of self-confidence, way to clear the complexion and restore it to its normal healthy, velvety condition is to clean out the entire system, purify the blood and remove the bacteria. Pale, Weak, Run-down, Overworked Mothers with Fretty Children, half sick, nervous, tired out with household and child care, with liver torpid, with blotched, muddy, sallow complexions, blood thin and impure, need building up and a thorough renovation of their systems. This is the time you need such a green nerve to anachnac build as the greatest threat to your health. LAXAKOLA FOR THE COMPLEXION gentle moves the bowels and thus removes the cause, acts directly upon the liver and kidneys, keeping them active and strong, while its marvelous tonic properties clear the complexion, stimulate the liver, quicken the circulation, increase the flesh and brighten the eye; the nervousness speedily disappears and the entire system re-energizes and tones up to a condition of perfect and permanent health. LAXAGAO is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health. The gentler sex whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require, and efficient laxative and tonic, is transmissible in assisting to relieve constrictions which otherwise would lead to more or less severe pain or illness. well as acting directly on the pores and assisting the perspiration glands in throwing off impurities. It purifies the blood as no other medicine can, and your skin will not only be well but you will be well. LAXAKOLA acts as a tonic to the whole female system, strengthening the organs and purifying the blood. It will cure the most confirmed case of constipation. With your bowels and rich, backaches, headaches, weak nerves, bloody, muddy, sallow complexions will vanish, and you will feel and look strong, healthy and vigorous. WHAT IS LAXAKOLA? It is a gentle painless and harmless liquid laxative. It is a wonderful, thorough medicine. It is a general builder of health and strength. I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist in this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever. I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment, after five weeks, my hearing in the affected ear has been entirely restored.
