SCOTT JOPLIN A KING
His Long Suit Is Catchy Rag
Time Music.
WAS RAISED IN SEDALIA
He Is Now Claimed by St. Louis, and There He Its Making Fame and Fortune.
The following, published in Sunday's Globe-Democrat will be read with interest here for the reason that it refers to a composer hailing from Sedalia, whose publisher is also a Sedalian.
St. Louis boasts of a composor of music who, despite the ebony line of his features and a retired disposition, has written possibly more instrumental successes in the line of popular music than any other local composer. His name Scott Joplin, and he is better known as "The King of Ragtime Writers," because of the many famous works in syncopated melodies which he has written. He has, however, also penned other classes of music and various vocal numbers of note.
Scott Joplin was reared and educated in St. Louis. His first notable success in instrumental music was "The Maple Leaf Rag," of which thousands and thousands of copies have been sold. A year or two ago, Mr. John Stark, a publisher of this city and father of Miss Eleanor Stark the well known piano virtuoso, bought the manuscript of "The Maple Leaf" from Joplin for a nominal sum. Almost within a month from the date of its issue this quaint creation became a byword with musicians, and within another half a twelve month circulated itself throughout the union in vast numbers. This composition was speedily followed by others of a like character until now the Stark list embraces nearly a score of the Joplin effusions. Following is a list of some of the more

pronounced pieces by this writer,
embodying these oddly titled works:
"Elite Syncopations."
"The Strenuous Life."
"The Rag Time Dance," (song)
"Sunflower Slow Drag."
"Swipsey Cake Walk."
"Peacherine Rag."
"Maple Leaf Rag."
Probably the best and most euphonious of his latter day compositions is "The Entertainer." It is a jingling work of a very original character, embracing various strains of a retentive character, which set the foot in spontaneous action and leave an indelible imprint upon the tympanum.
Joplin's ambition is to shine in other spheres. He affirms that it is only a pastime for him to compose syncopated music and he longs for more arduous work. To this end he is assiduously toiling upon an opera, nearly a score of the numbers of which he has already composed and which he hopes to give an early production this city.
MONROE H ROSENFELD
The TIMES was the first Sedalia paper to begin giving Mr. Joplin a public boom as a Negro music writer and composer of the catchy music known as "Rag Time." Among the first was that of the "Maple Leaf Rag," which was uamed after a social club in our city known as the Maple Leaf. The next was the "Sunflower Slow Drag," which was and is now a great favorite among Sedalians.
NEGRO CONVENTION CALLED.
At a conference of negroes at the Henry Harland Garnet club, Brooklyn, Tuesday, it was decided to issue a call requesting all the negro voters of New York, New Jersey and New England to send representatives to a convention to be held on June 3 in Brooklyn.
The object of the call, which was signed by Bishops Derrick and Walters and many clergymen is to take measures to prevent the disfranchisement of southern negroes and to elect delegates to the national suffrage convention which will be held in Louisville on July 1.
BAPTIST WOMEN ON
NEGRO PROBDEM.
At a meeting of the Woman's Baptist Home Mission Society in Buffalo the past we k a resolution was adopted declaring that the feeling against negroes manifested by many white people and the idea that negroes were not capable of developing a sturdy moral character were un-Christian and not justified by the findings of missionaries working among them.
OUR GIRLS
The sight of some of our girls mounting men's bicycles, assisted by half-grow boys is becoming a matter of common occurrence and one to be regretted exceedingly.
Girls are fast losing what little modesty they did pretend to have, and are convincing observers that modesty is a thing of the past.
The mothers of these girls have not the slightest idea as to their whereabouts and apparently do not exert themselves to find out.
The saving of the Negro race depends upon its women and girls, and at the rate our girls are going the future holds small hopes for its redemption.—Palladium.
TUDE JOHNSON DEAD.
Was Fatally Shot Sunday Morning at Syracuse.
TWO NEPHEWS ALSO HURT.
Arthur Glasgow, the Murderer, Under Arrest in Morgan County.
William Johnson, known as "Tude," died at the home of his sister, Lizzie Jennings, in this city Monday evening at 6:45, aged 27 years, three months and eight days. The immediate cause of his death was a gunshot wound through the left lung. Coroner Clunley held an inquest Tuesday morning, after which there will be a funeral sermon at the house, second door west of the A M E church, and the body was taken Wednesday morning to Pleasant Green for interment in the old slave burying ground on on the Walker homestead, where many of his relatives are buried.
"Tude" had been in the employ of John Menefee up to two weeks ago, when he went to Cooper county to work this summer for his sister who lives about 10 miles from Syracuse.
Saturday, accompanied by his two nephews, John and Walker Murphy, he went on invitation to the home of Wil Miller, one mile from Syracuse to a party. The young men remained at the Miller home, taking part in the plays until early Sunday morning when they started home, Walker and John Murphy going with "Tude" to his horse to assist him in mounting. "Tude" lost his leg 11 years ago and could not get on his saddle without assistance. While the boys were helping him to his horse Arthur Glasgow ran out of the house and without a word of warning began firug. His first shots were directed at "Tude" with whom he had some words last summer, but after he had fired three shots at him he turned his turned his revolver upon the nephews. Tude was hit in the left hand, the left arm and the fatal ball ploughed through his left lung. Walker Murphy was shot in the left groin and John Murphy's right index finger was shot off.
Glasgow made his escape in the darkness but was arrested Monday at Versailles, where he is held.
Johnson was brought to Sedalia Sunday accompanied by his nephew, Walker Murphy, Dr. J. M. Harris examined his wounds, removed the bullet from his arm and told him that his chances for life were slender. He was taken to his sister's home and there died Monday evening

The ball is still in the leg of Walker Murphy, Dr. Harris having failed to find it with the probe. It entered the groin and ranged downward into the left leg.
There are many boodlers in Missouri—self-confessed and otherwise—Democrats and Republicans. So far neither party has the edge on the other very much, but the machinery of the state government is in the hands of the Democrats. They must open the road to the penitentiary. Every boodler that the supreme court returns to Folk ought to cost the Democratic party in Missouri several thousand votes.

From Infancy To Age
Mother and Child
Woman with Child
Woman with Elderly Mother
Laxakola for Babies.—It is the best and most effective remedy for children BEST because it is pure and safe made entirely of harmless ingredients. BEST because it is non-irritating and never grips or causes pain or irritation. BEST because it is sure and never fails. BEST because "Children like it and ask for it." BEST because its tonic properties are so good and so strengthening that it keeps the little ones in fine, hearty condition.
It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent cathartics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple cold, restlessness, loss of sleep and fever it is invaluable.
A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colds by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhoea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation.
"My baby is 4 months old and is teething. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and that I would never pull him through perhaps if he were under his care. When I saw he was getting worse, I stopped giving him his medication, and I took trouble with colds very much, and used to scream when he had a touch of it. I did not know what it was to close my eyes day or night. I gave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I gave it to him a few times, and it worked like a charm, and he her jets pretty fair all night. It is a great deal better than the medication he gave him LAXAKOLA, and I think if I had taken it he would give nothing else to their sick babies."
MRS MARY DALEY, 597 First Street, South Boston, Mass.
Laxakola for Young Girls on the threshold of womanhood, has been found invaluable.
When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing.
Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results.
It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up.
Laxakola for Mothers.—It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals.
It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause.
To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure.
What Mr. Kie, Pruh, E. Palestine, O., Box 125, says about LAXAKOLA. "March 11, 1998. Received your free sample, it has done so much good, send me a 45c. bottle." March 28. "Bottle came safe, did me a lot of good, druggist here don't keep it, so enclosed is 50c. please send me quickly another bottle. The last bottle did me so much good I want another at once." April 14. "Enclosed is 50c. for one more bottle LAXAKOLA. It has done me much good."
Laxakola for Old Folks.-In the Autumn and Winter of Life, when the various organs through long years of action have become more or less sluggish, it becomes necessary to stimulate them by some remedy best adapted to that purpose. So long as the stomach and bowels are doing their work properly and the liver and kidneys are active and strong, your food is assimilated properly, your blood is kept pure and rich, and your nerves are strong. The feeling of nervousness, general weakness and debility means that the whole system is run down and needs a general toning up.
That LAXAKOLA DOES IT, has been proved beyond all question. Its gentle warming, soothing action on the bowels, liver and kidneys, stimulates them to increased activity, cleanses the blood, quickens the circulation, and puts the whole system in a condition of health and enables it to ward off disease, while its tonic properties tone up the system and keep it healthy.

ARE YOU DEAF?
ANY HEAD NOISES?
ALL CASES OF DEAFNESS OR HARD HEARING ARE NOW CURABLE by our new invention. Only those born deaf are incurable. HEAD NOISES CEASE IMMEDIATELY. F. A. WERMAN, OF BALTIMORE, SAYS:
Gentlemen: — Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion. About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost
I underwent a treatment for cataract, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of the city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever.
Then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and today, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased car has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain. Very truly yours.
