MEXICO, Mo., 20, 1903. Dear Sisters and Members of the Women's Missionary Society of the C M E church, we assemble with sad hearts on account of the loss of our president and dear sister, Minerva Davis, who was called to her reward May 29th last. Resolved, That we, the District Women's Society, of which she was the active president at the time of her death, that we should and will forever cherish and remember her religious examples and life to imitate. Resolved, That we extend to Rev. T M Davis and children our deepest sympathy in the loss of his dear wife and mother, and commend them ta Him who does all things for the best. The Republicans in congress should speak out on slavery in the South, not only in Alabama, but the entire south. This paper has been preaching for years that the Negro was half free and half slave, and now what think you palliators of the South since Alabama has been heard from? Not only white men have said the [sonth is all right but Negroes have said the same thing. Any negro who is caught advocating the rights of the South should be treated to a ride upon a rail. The rank and file of southern white men are rotten to the core as far as right and justice toward the negro is concerned. The only solution is Heat, e Our Bargain in E STOVES CARD OF THANKS. for the government of the United States to take the election of its own members in hand, amend the civil and military laws of our country in such a manner that the poorest and most humble citizen can get recourse; another is to arm the negroes so they can protect themselves. SLATER NOTES. Rev. J. W. DeBoer returned from Sedalia Saturday, bringing his two little daughters with him. The parsonage committee han every thing in readiness for him. Rev. Wright preached two sermons Sunday. One of them was the annual sermon of the Sons and Daughters of Jerusalem, having a crowded house. The collection was good. Elder Smith spent a few hours in Slater this week shaking hands with friends. Mrs. M. B. French has quite a variety of hair goods. Give her a call. I think you can be suited. Also an excellent preparation for the hair. Alice Brown returned home from Kansas City Saturday. Elger Edwards returned from Kansas City Saturday where he has been attending school. Mrs. Alice Craig leaves for Wichita in a few days. ABOUT TIME TO ACT. It it about time for thecolored men of our city who have and always did take leading parts in our campaigns, to begin organizing and get ready for the next big fight next spring and fall. The negro voters of Sedalia are rapidly using their power in all political battles, and at the rate they are going now and from their actions in the last fall's campaign they will soon be powerless and helpless to any party, and the man who loves his race and who will make every honest effort to advance them in the political world, is becoming powerless and hopeless. Something must be done and it must be done at once or all future homes for the Sedalia negro is lost, beyond redemption. These slush and boodle campaigners and voters must be set down upon, they must not rule the people who stand for principle, right and justice, for if they do and they continue the way they did in the past few years, selling their votes for small and large sums of money, without regard to principle or the man, they are voting for, we would not be surprised when we wake up and find that the negroes of Sedalia are not allowed to vote again when we let the class of men control the negro votes of Sedalia and Pettis county, we need never expect to keep a negro janitor or policeman or get even a negro clerk or judge at the election, not saying a word about anything else. So we appeal to the thinking class of negroes today, don't sit still and let your duty in this respect go undone. You are the light of your race in this city, you must make it shine, in every manner of life and do your part by fighting down evil that is dragging the negroes of Sedalia down as fast as time can roll around. Rev. E. D. Burns aid members ofthe Free Will Baptist church are arranging to have the corner stone laying of their new church July 18, when the members, led by their able pastor expect to have a grand time. Efforts are being made tohavea big parade, headed by the Queen City Cornet band, and followed by the Masonic orders and members of this church. The bills will be out shortly announc- ing the entire program. Rev. Burns is doing good work, and de- serves the hearty patronage of Se- dalia church goers, The attitude of Booker T, Wash- ington with regard to higher educa- tion for the Negro is amplified when it is known that there isn’t a Negro in the faculty of Fisk Uni- versity. Only three negroes in At- lanta university and none in Lin- coln, while Tuskegee institute gives employment to 28 negroes who have finished a full or partial college course, While these pess- emistic race prophets are condemn. ing Mr. Washington and __ his school, yet it remains for Booker T to provide employment for the graduates of the institutes to. which these calamity howlers take occa- sion to refer, _ Tuskegee institute is doing more for the elevation of ‘the negro intellectually, morally and industrially than any negro ins ‘stitution in the country. And that negro man who masters the curri- culum of Howard. Yale or Cornell and who puts it to no use is simply a fool with a good memory, It is to be regretted that there are not more institutions which manifest the same kind of praatical interest in college education that Tuskegee institute does, | Every young man should come forward in life with the determina- tion to do all the good he can and to leave the world better for his having lived therein, He should consider that he was not made for himself alone, but for society, for mankind and for God and whether rich or poor, high or low. he should take life like a man, take it just as though it were as it is—an earnest, vital essential affair. Take it just as though you per- sonally were born to the task of performing a merry part in it, as though the world had waited for your coming. We must live for something, and for something worthy of life and its capabilities and oppertunities, for aoble deeds and achievements; every man and every woman has his or her as- signments in the duties and re- sponsibilities of daily life. We are in the world to make the world better to lift itup to higher levels of enjoyment and progress, to i make the heartsand homes brighter | by devoting to our fellows qur best thoughts, activities and influences. This is lifes grandest purpose. The great purpose of living is twofold in character, The one should never change from the time reason takes the helm; ir is to live a life of manliness, of purity and of honor, to live such a life that whether rich or poor your neighbor will honor and ressect you asa man of sterling principles. The other is to have some business in the due performance of which you are to put forth all your exertions It matters not so much | what it i |as whether it be honorable, and i may change to suit varying cir. cumstances. Ata meeting of the Woman’s Baptist Home Mission Society in Buffalo the past week a resolution was adopted de- claring that the feelmg against negroes aettauicd by many white people and the idea that negroes were not capable of de- veloping a sturdy moral character were un-Christian and not justified by the find- ings of missionaries working among them. OUR~-GIRLS. The sight of gome of our girls mounting men’s bicycles, assisted by balf-grow boys is becoming a matter of common oc- currence and one to be regretted exceed- ingly, Girls are fast losing what little modesty they did pretend to have, and are con- vincing observers that modesty isa thing of the past. | The mothers of these girls have not the slightest idea as to their whereabouts and apparently do not exert themselves to find out. The saving of the Negro race depends upon its women and giris, and at the rate our girls are going the future holds small hopes for its redemption.—Palladium, There are many boodlers in Missouri— self-confessed and _otherwise—Democrats and Republicans. About three weeks ago we were informed by W. B. Williams and others that the majority of the colored people wanted to spend Aug. fourth out of the city, and that he and others had srranged to run a big ex- cursion. Healso said that the reason why they wanted. to go out of town this year was because the merchants and business men of the city would not do anything in the way of helping the colored people of our city in bring- ing thousands of visitors here to spend their omney and that they would ar- range to go to some other town this year. During last week we notice that another company or crowd had been formed and they are arranging to hold a big celebration in the city on August 4th. Mr. August Jackman and James Newbils are at the head of this movement and they claim that this year’s ceehration will exceed that of last year, the Liberty park has already been secured by them for this day and the matters is now being pushed to the highest. Mr. Jackman and Newbils had this park last year and made quite a success but they said they did not realize much from the blowout. So the battle is now on and from all appearances will get hot- ter and hotter until the final day. The TIMES has only this to say in regard to the matter, that we are always for Sedalia and her people first and the neighboring towns next, and if we can draw a big crowd of colored people to our city on August 4th and they leave two or three thousand dol- lars in our city, it benefits us all in some way, and hence it is the duty of every individual to work for his own city. But the fact that it takes considerable money to make an attrac tive celebration and the colored peo- ple’s means are so very limited, then the merchants who reaize all the cel- ebration fund should donate liberaly and help the boys and if they don’t or won't then we don’t blame the peo- ple for going elsewhere and celebrate ing. And again, if the coolred peo- ple of our city want to hold a big cel ae it should be universary and open so that the white people can join in and help make it and that the public can derive some of the benefits and not individuals always. But our churches have a chance to help the treasurer from these public days— have a joint meeting and select com- mittees for the different works of the celebration, and then we can get more hep from the white merchants, rail- road and street cars, and again we would not have a gang pulling this and that way. . ; | dwin. The welfare of man is eve the monetary pleasures of glut- tony, and so is the welfare of the body more co be considered than ep- iqurian delights * * * If man has’no higher purpese in life than to eat, he is lower than the beasts forhe nes: lects to feed the mind and the soui. There are things which money can- not bay. * * * The creator was not so unkind as to make one’s highest en- Joyment res upon so unsubstantial a foundation as dollars, nor does he dole out joy in proportion to one’s earthly possessions. Compare the hap Piness of the virtues cottage covered couple whos? souls are held together by the indissoiuble bonds of iove with the estranged occupants of a palace. Compare the uplift delights of one who follows the path of duty, with the revelries of the profligate with with inherited milions at his disposal | “The highest purpose that a man can have, is the betterment of the human family. * * * The marble stat- utes may be more nearly perfect in feature and in form than any living erences its hands de no mischief; its feet run on no errands of evil and its lips speak neither lie nor _blas: phemy. It is a low creature of man that estimates him by his negative qualities. He must be positively good to be respected. His back even tho it bend, must help to bear his brothers load. His hands tho some- times idle or worse than uselessly employed must have a part in the shaping and moulding of theworld; his tongue, tho it may stammer or sometimes utter what the heart would fain retract, must be the vehicle of a higher and » broader truth than can be found within selfish limits.” This is all very beautiful—intense- ly so, but after all “How much should a manown?” How much should one eat? And if some one gets too much— ©. g. Mr. Carnegie—who and by what means would you make him disgorge? Mr. Herbert Spencer speaking of property in land—see social statistics early edi—says that if a man may truly and justly own a few acres he may own many or indeed the entire earth and regulate the doings of those upon it. I would that Mr. Bryan discuss the correlative of this question. By so doing we would get somethingmore definate. Ever keeping in mind that as to use-vaiue the earth is worth only so much and that at any given time there are only so many to use it, will Mr. Bryan please to tell us How poor should one be?” ~~ } LDL] uA) bel ea gS ae Pear a Ect one * Beery ‘Reader, cut out this ad- sie Feet = Sm TREE Set a % ‘us, With your name and te address, and we will send you a Free : ee a Agent's Outitotf OZONG, Woewant eh a 00d Agents in every coum ‘You can WZ ery S&S make from $18.00 to $50.00 every week.
