Thus winning for himself and family, true and worthy friends among both white and colored, who stood by his bed side administering to his wants while he was crossing the cold stream of death. ENDS! SEDALIA, MO., MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 1908. Mrs. Carrie Lucas three sisters, one brother and Five grand children and host of friend to mourn his loss. The service was conducted at his residence by Rev. Thos Davis. The following pall bearers were, Thos. Martin, James White, Albert Morehead, Green Taylor and Dickey Jimmerson. His body was laid to rest in the Old Colorado Cemetery. He sleeps the sleep that knowth no awaking until the Resurrection morn. State Chairman Dickey State Chairman Dickey is showing horse sense in visiting each of the congressional districts in the interest of the Republican organization. Mr. Dickey is out to win the election this fall. He has the energy, perseverance and knowledge that a state chairman should possess and under his leadership there is no reason why every voter should not be brought to the polis next November. There have been times when Republicans have been convinced that the sate chair man ship meant simply the head of the patronage bureau. Patty workers have been known to go to St. Louis during campaign to get encedorsements and not to consider how to form the most perfect organization. No such accusation has ever been made against Mr. Dickey. Even those who are supposed to be leading an opposition to him for re election cannot and do not claim that he is not the best material for state chairman in the party at this time. The nominees on the state ticket realize this fact and the party workers thru out the state who do not happen to let federal positions overcome their interest in the elections are fully awake to the facts. —Joplin Hearold. Lincoln School Opening. On next Monday, the portals of Lincoln School will open and her patrons are urged to send their children in the first day or during the first week. The law has made it mandatory upon parents and guardians to keep their children in school during the first half of the term. This law is to be rigidly enforced hereafter. During the summer vacation, the Board of Education has had erected a neat and commodious Manuel Training building, which is to be equipped for immediate practical use. Prof. Hubbard and others are to pay special attention to this feature of our educational work. Every citizen, we believe, should be grateful to the Board of Education for this very sensible step in our educational progress. We call the attention of our parents and guardians to the following provisions of the Compulsory Educational Law:— 1. Every child between 8 and 14 years old and between 14 and 16, when not regularly employed, must attend some day school at least half of the term each year. 2. No child can be excused on promise to attend; he must attend the first half of the term before being excused on that account. 3. Courts having jurisdiction (justice of the Peace in rural district and in cities having less than 50,000 population) may ex cuse children from attending school for the following reasons: (1) parents can not supply proper clothing; (2) child is mentally or physically unable to attend; (3) no public school in town and a half miles of the home; (4) labor of the child necessary to support family; (5) child has completed the common school course. 4. No child between 8 and 14 can be employed in mine, factory workshop or store unless excused for one of the five reasons, or has statement from teacher that he has already attended half of the term for that school year. 5. It is the duty of attendance officers and district clerks to notify parents and guardians when children fail to comply with the provisions of the law. 6. The penalty for non-attendance falls on parent or guardian and it is a maximum fine of $25 or imprisonment for 10 days, one or both. 7. For illegal employment of a child, the employer is subject to a fine of fifty dollars and costs 8. Every school board shall publish this synopsis in a newspaper of the district or post it in at least five public places ten day before school opens each year. Deal Jackson Successful Negre Farmer. Deal Johnson is a Negro farmer who lives in Dougherty county, Ga. His home is located a few miles from the pretty little city of Albany, and no man in the community stands higher than he. He is respected by all, and is especially well thought of by his white fellow-citizens. Jackson has just marketed the first bale of cotton in his State, and the first in his entire section of the country, for that matter. This is the seventh time he has preformed this feat. He takes a pride in his farm; he hustles to get that first bale on the market and he gets it there regularly. Jackson has relied entirely on his own efforts all of his life. He is independent and asks no man odds. His credit is good for what ever he wants at any store or bank in Albany. He has never been known to want more than he might reasonably be expected to pay for; that is the keynote of his character. He does not concern himself at all with politics or politicians. He hasn't any "pull" anywhere, save such as is legitimately due him as a reward for his honest endeavor. He has reduced cotton raising to an exact science; he knows what the plant will do under given conditions. He has generally managed to get his first bale in a little ahead of his white competitors, in spite of all their efforts—indeed he broke all of his own previous records this year. Jackson's great card is attending to his own business, and doing it well. Nobody ever heard of Jackson's being mixed up in trouble of any variety. Business men value his opinion on things agricultural. It is a pity there are not more colored men like Deal Jackson. If there were, there would be no race problem, real or imaginary. His example is uplifting. It is worthy the emulation of any man, no matter what the color of his skin. The Negro race needs more Deal Jackson's. We realize and deplore that race hatred in our country is developed and inflamed to such great depth that it comes our duty to organize as citizens to place ourselves upon record. We condemn all criminals of all races, but especially seize our seal of condemnation against any member of our race, who commit the "unmentionable crime" against the womanhood of our country, and we pledge our support in hunting down and bringing justice any man guilty of said crime. Realizing as we do that said crimes are not only the cause but often the excuse for mobs venting prejudice by taking the life and destroying the property of our Negroes. We therefore pledge ourselves to join all good citizens in ridding our communities of loafers, gangbusters and all vice characters. Ann we call upon the statute books of our state be enforced against every man be he white or black. We endorse the individuals and the newspapers who have so nobly, and who are now attemtying ho show the fallacy of my community venting its prejadice upon the innocent citizens for the crimes of the guilty, and we call upon our colored citizens to so live that no suspicion of sympathy for criminals of any class can be thrown upon them. If we could only have our grand-father back with us again, but we are thankful that grandfather lived to help mother raise us this far in life. Grandfather lived to be sixty-three years seven months and twenty-six days old. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. We loved our grand father dearly because he was dear to us as our father. Oh! how silent our home is this morning, we truly thank our dear friends and relatives for assisting us in the time of our dear grandfather's sickness and death.
