President McKinley was conscious to the last and died like a hero, a martyr and a great man.
As misery likes company, it could be well to say that Christ served among the poor when he is on earth.
There are times when people would lay aside their jealousies and work in harmony for the betment of all the people.
President McKinley lived and died a Christian. We will have McKinley's in future.
The jointists are living in hope spite the fact that mayor Hugh is still holding down first base.
Atchison would do well to give other corn carnival as they can almost any old thing over there now.
There are times when forbearance ceases to be a virtue. Hence at time is near at hand when we going after some of those ends who claim to love us so.
The young American girl who lashed the King of Spain's camel evidently was from Missouri. Kansas woman would give the faithful Spainard that much nausea.

DO RIGHT--KNOW THAT YOU ARE RIGHT; FEAR NOMAN; BUT RENDER JUSTICE TO ALL
sure as there is a Heaven we are going after him later on and we will be harged if we will leave any flesh on him, it will be a skinning much deserved on his part, he knows he never made a Negro a spittoon cleaner at Washington in all his great career: and more over there are others thou God seeth,
Chief Stahl will go down in History as one man who tried to suppress the liquor traffic in Topeka and thus far he has failed also will Judge Disney of Oakland
The assassin of President McKinley has been convicted of murder in the first degree and has been sentenced to Capitol punishment which fate is right.
Be as it may the fraternal brother often forgets how to act by the man enlisted in the same business he is.
We will give you a few surprises in a few days regarding the farmers and good people of Pratt county what they are doing these days of scarity of corn and wheat
Criticism is all right in its place but when a man behind a newspaper undertakes to over ride and criticise a dignitary or any competent gentleman very often the dog returneth to his vomit cast thy bread we may say of revenge on the waters and you may see it many days hence.
There are some jealous whit: people in this city who don't like us but we suppose its all because we don't run a joint and call them "lords,"
There are a number of able and representative colored farmers who are doing well in Pratt county rasing plenty of wheat and other cereals it many of our shawnee county populace who delight to farm would go there and procure some of those cheap lands we would perdict for them much success.
The work of cranks have resulted in shooting two Presidents in the U. S. fatal, also the the attempt on the life of President McKinley, two in France, one killed in Kingston Jamaica and a king killed in Italy. It is time to call a halt and destroy the nest of these cranks else in after years when no one is thinking the same acts will follow.
None but the right kind of people can stay in business in this city. The devils have refused to pay for the paper and did us all the harm they could but good people stick to us.
In regard to the contest now going on by the different churches and given out by Mr, E S, Lee we shall say that the $100 should go to the minister himself. It is the will of the people to give that prize to the minister who holds the highest number of tickers beyond 2000 to the most popular colored minister in Topeka and this is only right and no more,
With such man as Richter for Governor Chas F. Scott for congressman at large, Chas Curtis for United States Senator, J. D. Bowersock from second district and a few more lesser light Kansas will soon be back to her rightful fold to which she properly belongs. The above named persons are all good men and will take like hot cake among all classes all of them are acquainted with the ways of the colored people and each of them lives in cities populated by them and they are always willing and ready to promote a colored man's interest. Let the loud mouth politician beware and remember this kind of a coterie when the time comes.

TOPEKA, KANSAS, SEPT., 21. 1901.
EDISON LIGHT COMPANY
The success of the Edison Light Company in this and other large cities of the east has been brought to public gaze by none but experienced electricians.
Here in Topeka we can feel proud of the Edison company by reason of the fact that for several years Mr. Chas. R. Maunseil who was born with the company came here from Chicago and took superintendency of the company at this place.
At that time little attention was given this company but during the last five years under him it has developed into a real concern supporting a giving general satisfaction to the many business men of Topeka: nearly every concern is propelled by electricity, in fact every p inting office even Carrie Nation's paper is off a large press propelled by electricity.
If one would stop to think they will readily get the idea that there is nothing easy about electricity, to begin with we are informed that danger is always present, hence you may see at a glance there is nothing easy in studying the principle by which electricity is proven a success
Mr. Chas, R. Maunsell the present superintendent was transferred here for the purpose of giving better services to greater Topeka and he is doing that. The rapid growth of the business from incandescent lights to the larger machine power has caused the company at this point to employ more people and pay better prices for work executed than under the old system of dismal and gloom
Mr. Maunsell formerly lived in Chicago 22 years and during that time he learned the system to the letter. His acquaintance with the founders of electricity is of long stand and when he speaks of the company he speaks as only capable and experience men can speak.
The LEDGER is safe in saying that with Mr. Maunsell at the mast-head of this great concern in Topeka that the city will be a brilliant "star," long as he gives his energies to the success of the business as he has up to the present time.
The plant is located on Varn Buren street north of the corner of 8th street and it is worth the curiosity seeker's while to see it in passing in that section.
The only thing that a howling mob will say a Negro is fitted for and that is for the army. They say he makes a good soldier while they make the greatest cowards in all earth.
The governor of Missouri is an awful nice man. He offered a reward for the right man just the same as though three Negroes who died and thirty families driven from town had no rights that he and his d—n alines should respect.
The state of Missouri has again been blotted out in the calendar of decency. We do not censure a lynching as much as we censure an angry mob in executing a purpose of that kind on the wrong man.
"It you can tell me of a place where people never die," said the Irishman, "I'll go there an stay till the end of me days."
Ex.
All women are fair who are respected and honest in our estimation, but driving innocent colored families from their homes at the muzzle of the gun makes it look like an all one sided thing. Many colored people detest and abhor the procedure of an assault on a young lady as much as the white brethern.
