Nervous
Mothers
A nervous, irritable mother, often on the verge of hysterics, is unfit to care for children; it ruins a child's disposition and reacts upon herself. The trouble between children and their mothers too often is due to the fact that the mother has some female weakness, and she is entirely unfit to bear the strain upon her nerves that governing a child involves; it is impossible for her to do anything calmly. She cannot help it, as her condition is due to suffering and shattered nerves caused by some derangement of the uterine system with backache, headache, and all kinds of pain, and she is on the verge of nervous prostration.
When a mother finds that she cannot be calm and quiet with her children, she may be sure that her condition needs attention, and she cannot do better than to take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. This medicine will build up her system, strengthen her nerves, and enable her to calmly handle a disobedient child without a scene. The children will soon realize the difference, and seeing their mother quiet, will themselves become quiet.
Mrs. May Brown, of Chicago, Ill., says:
"Dear Mrs. Pinkham: —'Honor to whom honor is due,' and you deserve both the thanks and honor of the mothers of America whom you have so blessedly helped and benefited. I have used Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound when I would feel run-down, nervous and irritable, or have any of the aches and pains which but few women escape, and I have found that they feel well. Several ladies members of our Literary Union, speak in the highest praise of your Vegetable Compound, as they have been cured from serious female troubles. One lady, who thought she must submit to an operation, was cured without using anything in the world but Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and Sanative Wash. You have hosts of friends in Chicago, and came to visit our city we would delight to do

The disciplinary council of the Munich bar has just had brought before it a barrister charged with the high crime and misdemeanor of taking part in amateur theatricals. The impugned lawyer pleaded that he had charged no fees, but the bar council declined to admit that this want of prudence purged the offense, and imposed a fine together with a sharp reprimand.
Favored Education of Women
The bequest of Prof. Jacobi of Berlin in the interest of coeducation is said to be the first of its kind ever made by a man. He has bequeathed 10,000 marks to the University of Berlin with the proviso that the university shall not come into possession of the money until at least two departments are open to women as regular students.
Still Honor Wu Ting-Fang

Green County's Sensation
Catskill, N. Y., November 10th.—Ulster and Greene counties are ringing with the news of the wonderful recovery of George F. Ayers, who lives at 16 Division street, in this city. One year ago Mr. Ayers was suffering from Bright's Disease of the Kidneys, and the doctors gave him little relief and less hope. To-day Mr. Ayers is as well as man could wish. He tells the following story:
"About a year ago I was at West Camp, sick with Bright's Disease and without hope of ever being better, when an old gentleman from Bath, N. Y., advised me to take Dodd's Kidney Pills, telling me they had cured him of the same disease.
"I had tried so many remedies that I was past hoping and told him so, but when he bought me a box of Dodd's Kidney Pills and coaxed me to try them I did so just to humor his whim.
"That was the means of saving my life. I took that box and half a dozen more. Thanks to that old man and Dodd's Kidney Pills, I am cured." The newly married man will generally cook books pretty heavy literature.
Kansas Notes
Lawrence has a suspender factory. The town also needs a belt factory. Most of the young men wear both. A McPherson girl committed suicide by cutting her throat with a razor "kept," the reporter says, "by her father for shaving." At a base ball game between Gypsum City and Roxbury the score ran up as high as 55 to 13 before all the bats were worn out. A clergyman in one of the smaller Emporia churches insists upon being paid in advance. He has promulgated the rule, "No money, no sermon." Five years have elapsed since the Greeley county jail had a prisoner in it. The poor farm, too has such small patronage that it is advertised for sale. Some of the vivacious young folks in Conway had a pleasant party last week. The youngest guest was 70, and they were chaperoned by a matron of 86.
In Beloit at least 100 men are taking pills before each chew of tobacco or before each cigar, to cure the tobacco habit, and a local paper which notes the fact has hopes that the remedy may be effective.
A remarkable story comes from Lincoln county. Philip Pfeiffer, a farmer, had a nice patch of potatoes on the bottom bordering Table Rock creek. A freshet came along the other day and washed out this field, soil and all, down to a depth of ten inches. Pfeiffer supposed that his potatoes had all been washed away, but after the creek had subsided he found seventy-five bushels of the tubers piled together near a riffle. They were sound and clean and all he had to do was to shovel them into a wagon. Was such a way of harvesting potatoes ever heard of before?
A young man, Charles Brown by name, stripped off his clothes and threw himself from a second story window in Osawatomie the other night. As an example of the curious vagaries which take possession of the insane it is reported that on being picked up he said he wanted to pray for his brother and that it was so dark in his room that he couldn't see to do it. He has been sent to an asylum.
There is an ordinance in Coffeyville to prevent boys from "hopping" trains, and the marshal says that hereafter the city hall will get those who escape the morgue.
In Gray county, the story goes, the campaign was so fierce the babies formed the habit of hiding out whenever they saw a candidate approaching.
The marriage of Mabel Matthews and Anthony Jennings, deaf mutes, in Hiawata recently was satisfactory, although neither of them had a voice in it.
A Leavenworth man recently went to Spokane, Wash., and was stricken with appendicitis, pelurisy and typhoid fever.
Beware of the "Texas widows." They are almost as dangerous as the Texas fever. A Wellington man with $1,800 cash married a "Texas widow" a few weeks ago and has written home for financial help.
In the Supreme court Saturday the case of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company against Webb McNall was decided in favor of McNall.
Speaking of the trials of early settlers, a correspondent of the Delphos Republican tells this one: "I am afraid of fire," said a settlers wife to me the other day. "Once when we were burning off the corn stubble in Autumn there came up a whirlwind and carried the flames to our neighbor's farm. It took his barn and most of his wheat and hay. My husband and I scrimped and saved for four years to pay that loss, but we did it. During all that time I only spent $2 for new clothes. Do you wonder that I am afraid of fire?" It's strange, but salt exists in large quantities around the town of Gypsum, and gypsum abounds in Saline county. Coffey county boasts of a citizen who has voted forty-eight years in the same precinct. A conference is in progress in Pittsburg of the United Mine Workers' union for the district of Kansas.
When a man has set up all night as a judge of the election the Emporia Gazette believes he is entitled to be called by the prefix "Judge" forever after. He has earned the title.
A hole in the ground drains all the water from the town of Cedarville, in Smith county. When water runs into the opening it disappears instantly, and no amount of water can fill it.
A "lady" evangelist, Mrs. Womelcorf, is holding revival services in Concordia. She is described as an exhorter of rare power.
The Wichita Eagle tells of a woman in black who laid down on the railroad track with suicidal intent, and refused to bidge until the brakeman told her there was a worm crawling up her neck.
A farmer in ewell county admits he is a sort of "bloated aristocrat." He lost eight good horses by alfalfa bloat in one day.
Salina, where the people are not afraid of the smoke nuisance, has lately added unto itself a corn-cob pipe factory.
All other claims pertaining to the "meanest man" championship vanish, for a time, in the presence of the Wellington thief who stole the pennies out of the tin cup of a blind woman who was playing a hand-organ.
A Witchita man has a dog named Moreover, and the man explains that the name is a Scriptural one. The good book says, "Moreover, the dog came and licked Lazarus's sores."
There was a great scurrying for dictionaries the other day in Scranton when the Gazette made reference to "righteous senectitude."
In a recent sermon the Rev. Charles M. Sheldon said: "I have been told that a peck of corn will make a pint of whiskey, and I have seen that a pint of whiskey will make a peck of trouble."
THE CHILDREN ENJOY
Life out of doors and out of the games which they play and the enjoyment which they receive and the efforts which they make, comes the greater part of that healthful development which is so essential to their happiness when grown. When a laxative is needed the remedy which is given to them to cleanse and sweeten and strengthen the internal organs on which it acts, should be such as physicians would sanction, because its component parts are known to be wholesome and the remedy itself free from every objectionable quality. The one remedy which physicians and parents, well-informed, approve and recommend and which the little ones enjoy, because of its pleasant flavor, its gentle action and its beneficial effects, is Syrup of Figs—and for the same reason it is the only laxative which should be used by fathers and mothers.
Syrup of Figs is the only remedy which acts gently, pleasantly and naturally without gripping, irritating, or nauseate and which cleanses the system effectually, without producing that constipated habit which results from the use of the old-time cathartics and modern imitations, and against which the children should be so carefully guarded. If you would have them grow to manhood and womanhood, strong, healthy and happy, do not give them medicines, when medicines are not needed, and when nature needs assistance in the way of a laxative, give them only the simple, pleasant and gentle—Syrup of Figs.
Its quality is due not only to the excellence of the combination of the laxative principles of plants with pleasant aromatic syrups and juices, but also to our original method of manufacture and as you value the health of the little ones, do not accept any of the substitutes which unscrupulous dealers sometimes offer to increase their profits. The genuine article may be bought anywhere of all reliable druggists at fifty cents per bottle. Please
A woman's hall is being erected at the cost of about $35,000 by the University of Montana. It will accommodate seventy students and will be ready for use about Jan. 1, 1903. The portion of Science hall recently destroyed by fire has been rebuilt, with additional space for a school of pharmacy, not yet organized. The foundation has also been laid for a gymnasium, to cost $10,000.
American Architects Honored.
American architects are asked by the municipality of Patras, Greece, to enter a contest for the furnishing of plans for a church to cost $250,000, which take the place of the preset church in St. Peter's prizes are $2,000, $500 and $400. The general character of the architecture must be Byzantine.
Paper Cannon.
Krupp, the great German manufacturer of cannon, has lately completed a number of paper field pieces for the use of the German infantry. Their caliber is a little less than two inches, and the pieces are so light that one soldier can easily carry one; but the resistance is greater than that of a field piece of steel of the same caliber.
Shrewd Sultan
The sultan's announcement that his autobiography, detailing all the intrigues of Christian statesmen to gain the support of Mohammedan Turkey, will not be published until after his death is probably his oriental way of insuring his life. Some secrets are dangerous and some foreign officers have a long hand and few scruples.
A. Wonder.
Philadelphia claims to possess the most marvelous specimen of needlework in the world. It is a tapestry measuring twenty-seven feet in length and thirteen feet six inches in width. The groundwork is silk and it is superb embroidered with figures telling the history of America from the landing of Columbus until 1892. A Polish artist was engaged six years on the work.
Lunacy on the increase.
Since 1858 the number of lunatics in Scotland has increased by 180 per cent, while the population increase has been only 49 per cent.

runa many years ago have been eager to recommend Peruna to their runa we are wise in. The runa is advertised. It advertises itself. Its merits are its chief advertisement. Once cured of so distressing and exasperating a malady as catarrh, it becomes the duty of every one to pass it along; to call the attention of those who are still victims, to a remedy that rarely fails to cure.
Beware of Cheap Imitations of Peruna. He Sure That You Get Peru-runa.
There are no substitutes for Peruna. Allow no one to persuade you that there is something just as good. The success of Peruna has tempted many people to devise clever strategies of them. Be sure that you get Peruna. Miss Jennie Priscollo, 870 Putnam Ave. Brooklyn, N. Y., Writes: "I heard so much in praise of Peruna as a specific for catarral affections that
when I found myself with a bad case of catarrh of the head and throat Peruna was the first thing that I thought of. And my convictions were not wrong, for in a few weeks after using Peruna systematically I was entirely rid of this aggravating and distressing disease, catarrh.
"If people knew how efficient Peruna was for this trouble they would not hesitate to try it. I have all the faith in the world in it, and have never known of a case where the person was not cured in a short time."—Jennie Driscoll.
