Epidemic of Imo ity Threatin pecta
Epidemic of Imorality Threating respectable homes
Shameful Conditions Existing On East Archer And Cincinnati Streets.
The Star regrets that it is necessary to air to the outside world any bad feature of Tulsa in order to get our own people at home to notice it, but such is the case.
No city is without some bad features; every city has its living hells; its dens where vice and immorality is indulged in for pastime.
But there is no good reason why the better element of people in any city should permit these conditions to exist to their own shame and detriment.
Tulsa, is a great city. Her good qualities are not surpassed by any city in the Southwest, if anywhere in the United States. Her citizens are as a whole the best there is. They are people who love and respect the sanctuary of the home and honor above all else the good name and virtue of the fair sex.
These are facts that we are proud of, but there are other facts that of which we are not proud and which we admit with a tinge of guilt and dshame.
Guilt, because we have not raised our voices in protest against an epidemic of moral turpitude of a most damnable and shameful nature. Shame, because all principles of Christian probity that we might institute into the tender minds of our girls and boys, and all our efforts to keep our home life, the home circle, protected from the esvils of the underworld, are laughed to scorn and trampled under foot by agents of vice and corruption who sojourn about and near us.
We respectfully invite the attention of the city officials to the rotten conditions existing in the vicinity of East Archer and Cincinnati.
This portion of the city is in a direct path for residents of the East end who desire to go to town for shopping or any other kind of business and it is impossible for the women and children in tibs part of the city to get to town without detouring several blocks out of the way or passing through an atmosphere of moral impurities, base, vile and vulgar language proceeding from the mouths of the hell-cats and their consorts who inhabit and frequent the dens and dives in that vicinity. The city is doing a great injustice to the respectable people in the East end in permitting these houses to run in this part of town. These human demons should be compelled to stay in a restricted district. There is no need for such people being permitted to remain on such public highway, and every true man, every minister of the gospel in Tulsa, should raise his voice against this outrage on common decency. A petition should be sent to the Mayor asking him to remove these human parasites by closing up the houses. Think of it! Immoral women, sitting out in public view, half clad, smoking cigarettes and using vile language all in plain view and hearing of the passersby. It is rediculous and the Tulsa Star is for one willing to go down as opposed to it!
Taneha Sand Found at Sapulpa
The present activity in the oil fields near this city and Sapulpa is cause for a wide spread interest among people who have invested their mony in this vicinity with the hope of realizing future returns therefrom.
The North Taneha Development Company of Muskogee, has sold quite a number of lots on their property between this city and Sapulpa, with an understanding that they would drill when enough money had been received on the lots, and since the news of finding Taneha sand in the well just brought in on the Bruner farm near Sapulpa there will probably be a rush on the North Taneha Company by lot purchasers, who desire to pay up that the company might start drilling at once. This field is looking better than ever at this time, and it may develop a few wealthy people before more months has passed.
Vol.1, No.31
A social precedent was established hed in Tulsa Monday night when Mr and Mrs. O W Gurley served a banquet after a formal reception in honor of Mr. and Mrs. R D. Taborn, newlyweds, who had just terminated their honey-moon trip from Kalamazoo, Mich., where Mr. Taborn went to claim his young bride, and bring her to this city, which stands out, even in far away Michigan, as the beacon light of commercial prosperity in Oklahoma. Mr. Taborn has rented the south room in the Gurley Bldg where next Monday he expects to open a big dry goods and clothing and shoe store which will be the only store of its kind conducted by colored people in Tulsa, and it was for the purpose of introducing the bride and groom and at the same time welcoming them to this city that the reception and banquet was given them. A product of Tuckegee, a

very affable fellow, full of moral stamina and business acumen, there is no doubt that the Taborn Dry Goods Company will make good here with such a man as Mr Taborn at the steering wheel. However, Mrs. Taborn will come in for a big slice of the responsibility for her husband's success since she is his guiding star and his inspiration in the business world. Both the bride and groom are well pleased with Tulsa, and deeply touched by the honor that was shown them. Prof. J. W. Hughes was master of ceremonys and he arranged a short program for the evening consisting of short talks by Rev. Kirsh, J. B. Hill, Freeman L. Martin, Dr. McKee and the editor of the Tulsa Star. Anumber of the leading ladies of the city were present with their husbands and added much to the enjoyment of the evening by the bride and groom.
Local Lawyer Making Good
The above likeness is that of lawyer G W Hutchins, of this city, who is quietly and unassumingly making a record for himself in the legal profession. He has a large civil practice and stands well with the court officials of this city and county.
Just this week he completed a sale of 160 acres of minor land for his client, Morris Lewis, for more than $2,000.00, which is said to be a remarkably high price for the land, considering its location and its general agricultural value.
Mr. Hutchins is a man of admirable qualities. A progressive citizen, a race man and a booster of the first-water. He is one of the old timers here and has an extensive knowledge of the Indian country.
"A Man wanted"
Sermon By R. v. James A. Johnson At
The A., M. E. Church Last Sunday
Text Gen. 41-38 And Pharoah
said unto his servants, Cean we find
such a one as this a man in whom
the spirit of God is? contest Isa.
32-2. And a man shall as an hiding
place from the wind and a covet
from the tempest, as rivers of water
in a dry place is the shadow of a
great rock in a weary land.
And for the rule or the way to become a man in the true sense of god's word read 2d chromiles 34-3. while he began to see after the God of David his father. And we are assured in the proverbs of Solomon Chager 12 verses 2 and he saith, A good man abtaineth help from God, but hf wicked devises will God condemn. And now yeugen me I come to you this morning with u special message and, I hope to so foreablely remind you of both the Affalining demand of God and our race Our Subject-A wanted" and A" man needed". And if you have taken strict notice, you will see hundreds of men idle and walking the streets of our city every day. And this would derhaps cause you to tak where are the places that men are wanted or needed?
Or why's it that men are needed or wanted and you see so many idle men?
And I answer you, it is because they don't come up to the mark of a man, and may remind you that 150 and 200 pounds have never made a man. But to be a man you must be moral, in-dus-trian, having your heads, hands, and your minds all well troined or Educated I hear the cry coming up from your minds, saying where is the place that A man isneeded or wanted?
The Grocery stores want men, the merchants, want men the blocksmith shops want men the farmers all want men and the contractors, want men and infact in every line of business, men are needed yes the pnipit need men that are well trained and tautly devoted to right and pighteousness. U.B.F.HoldS Annual Meet
Captain T.Jackson Delivers Principal Address Of DaY
The annual Thanksgiving Dinner of the U. B. F. and S. M. T. was preached in the First Baptist church last Sunday. by Rev, R N Holt, who delivered himself with much ease, freedom and ability. Dressed in white with purple ribbon about their waist line and on their hats all the members of the Woman's Auxiliary met with the men at the Cleaver-Cherry hall on North Greenwood and formed a line for marching to the church. The men wore white gloves which was their only uniform decoration. The line of march extended nearly three blocks, and it was certainly a line of beauty, especially the feminine portion.
The church was filled to its full capacity. Dr Jackson acted master of ceremonies. Rev Kersh delivered a short talk. Mrs Lucy Davis read an excellent paper on Love, and the two Rollison girls sang a duet. There were other preliminary features which was enjoyed by the audience. The principal speaker was Cap. T. D. Jackson, who delivered an address that went home deep into the hearts of those who heard it and would make good stock for any worthy man or woman to invest in.
Captain T. D. JACKSON
Followiding is Mr. Jackson's ad dress in full:
To the Officers and members of United Brothers of Friendship and Sisters of the Mysterious Ten and Friends:-
I have been invited to repre sen to you all today some of the princip les and policies of this Grand order. To tell you how I appreciate this honor, I will have to borrow some of the language of our magic Christ who said, while here on earth, "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven". I cannot find words in the English language or latin phrases adequate to express the unbounded gratification it gives me to express in my own way. I am glad to say that I can see in this order and I can conceive of a natural destiny which surpasses the glories of the present and the past; a destiny which meets the responsibilities of today and measures up to the possiibilties of the future. Now ladies and gentlemen, I bring to you today an organization resting securely upon the foundation

stone quarried by the revolutionary patriots from the mountains of eternal truth: an order applying in policies and practices to the world the self evident propositions that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator.
This organization is constituted among these brothers and sisters to secure these rights and this order derives its just dues from the consent of the governed. Behold an order in which civil and religious liberty stimulates all to earnest endeavor and in which the law resraining every hand uplifted for a neighbor's injury an order in which every citizen is a foreigner but, in which no one cares or dare, to wear crowna. Behold! my friends, this order standing erect, while Emp res all round us are bowed beneath the weight of their own armaments; an organization whose flag is loved while other flags are only feared.
My friends, the U. B. F. 's are increasing in population, in wealth, in strength and in influence in Tulsa, and solving the problems of civilization and hastening the coming of an universal brotherhood. Our is an order which shakes thrones and desolves aristocracies by its silent example and gives light inspiration to those who sit in darkness.
In behalf of the U B F. 'S I wish to inform this splendid audience that the U B F. 'S in Tulsa are gradually but surely becoming the supreme moral factor in the world of progress and civilization and the accepted arbiter of the world of disputes. Thus is an o der the history of which, like the path of the just, is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the per ect day. Now, ladies and gentlemen, we want numbers and this is the qualities I am asking for: all those born of a goodly pearl, reared in an atmosphere saturated with the puritan spirit, whose character and career are founded upon that religious basis which has developed his or her sense of accountability to God, love of truth and justice, sensitiveness for the feelings of others, reverence for things sacred, adherence to law and order, fidelity to duty and devotion to the spread of christian civilization.
Pue more thought and I am through saving your earnings, of denying you, selves in the present that you may have something in the future; of consumming less for yourself that your children may have a start in life when you are gone.
With money and property comes the means of knowledge and power, a poverty stricken class or race will be an ignorant and despised class and no amount of sentiment can make it otherwise.
This part of our destiny is in our own hands; every dollar you lay up represents one day of indefends ence 1 of rest, security is the future.
If the time shall ever come when we possess in the colored people of this country a class of men noted for enterpris industry, economy and success, we shall not longer have any trouble in the matter of civil and politics rights; the battle against the popular prejudice shall have been fought and won an in common with all other races and colors, we shall have an equal enchance in the rece of life.

Have you stopped to think that a newspaper usually reflects
the standing of the people of the community where it is published ?
Do you know that a newspaper is usually what the people of a town
make it? Sometimes people excuse their lack of support to their
local paper by saying, “O, there’s nothing to it.” What if every
body in a town should withhold support from their newspaper on
such flimsy excuse? ‘The result would be that the town would soon
be without a paper and the outside world would soon forget the
town,
The Tulsa World and the Daily Democrat could not exist
without the support of the people of this town and the town would
not be what it is, and coul dnot long retain the commercial rating
it now has, without the influence of these papers. The people make
the papers and the papers make the town, The best way to get at
the proper standing of a people of any community is to read the
paper published there,
The ‘Tulsa Etar is your representative and if it is not all that
you would have it be itis your duty to help make it so and not to
stand back and criticise it,
Another thing we want you to bear in mind: When you sub-
subscribe for this paper or bring us your printing, you are helping
to create jobs for your children or for some colored boy or girl
who cannot possibly get work at the white newspaper or job printing
office,
The Tulsa Star is here and its yours, Tt is doing you as mueh
good as it isany one else in that it is working for the common
good of the community. Now, what have you done to help out in
the work?

wisie the loat women want men for husbands, tnd God want have any but men thats wright in purpose wright in habit, wright in deeds and wright in their hope for eternity. Young men this community needs you young men the churchel want you because you are upright in ourr life. Young men your mother thrt nestled you on her knee anb pressed you to her bosom where her heart was agonizing in fear less you be less than a man, she wants you come to the mark of her expectation.
Yes listen young men, anb you hear God's great and loving voice saying hear "O heavens' and give ears O earth for the Lord hath spoken, and may I say in conclusion that in every walk of life there is provision made so that the young may be trained and prepardd, The railroads starts the incompitant at the bottom and if the individual has the talent he may work himself to the top. The factories take the children and train them, and many of them at maturity are proficient for first place. This government of ours has its schools to prepare men for the diplomatic places.
Yes, the War department trains them till they are prepared for war and, to protect the interest of And did you know that God is our country. in the business of making men?
He needs them in the political world that the Biblical code of laws might be reverenced.
He needs them in the Ecclesiastical world that they may stand on his watch-tower and cry aloud to this sinful world: "Ye must be born again!"
The church needs you, young men, that you may say to these dear Fathers and Mothers that you have lifted your eyes upward where swinging worlds and the twinkling stars voice the grandeurs and glory of God.
And may God bless you young men, so that when time itself be receding and eternity dawning upon your view, you may still be singing, "I have reached the land of corn and wine,
And all its riches freely mine, Here shines undimmed one blissful day,
For all my night has passed away."

Steam Laundry For East End
About two weeks ago the Star published in these columns an article stating that Tulsa was soon to have a steam laundry operated by colored people. The Star now rises to announce that this new enterprise is now assured, and if nothing happens to prevent it, it will be in operation within the next week. Mr. Isaiah Anderson of Muskogee, will be general manager. The laundry will be located on North Greenwood in the building heretofore used for a skating rink.

READING ROOM
At last the colored reading room for Tulsa is now a reality. It is not a fine two or three story building with a gold dome, inlaid marble floors, etc.. In fact it is just a plain two-room house painted outside and papered inside, and very tastefully, too, which is now being equipped for a reading room. Wednesday night a church entertainment was given there and a number of people for the first time visited what is to be Tulsa's Colored Room. We may not be altogether satisfied with what we have, and many of us may want to wait for Mr. Carnegie to build a big li-
