THE WICHITA SEARCHLIGHT GOD'S WAY NOT OURS. THE GOVEROMENT MUST ROOT OUT ANARCY OR DIE. VOL. III. Every now and then God speaks a trumpet tones to the American people, as he has done at various times and in divers manners to other nations from the beginning of time God said to the house of Hapsburg. "Reform Austria." It would not do it. Down it went. God said to England, "Cease your usurpation, just taxation is tyranny." England would not hear. Down it went God said to the Commune in France. Make truth and equity and fratercity to rule." The Commune would not liste. Down it went. God said to the Confederate States of America, Free the Slaves." The Southerern States turned a deaf ear. Down they went. So it has been, and so it will be when men or nations deny God and oppose themselves to righteous ones; they go down and the armed militias of God march over them. In the midst of plenty and prosperity, the American people were not recently rushing on in the madness for more money and more marriages; beeding not the cry of the poor and the down-trodden, nor theail of unemployed and underpaid labor, that repeatedly went up from millions and millions of hearts all over the land. But God heard and died the mournful pleas of those who, when they asked for bread were given a stone. And God came and killed the tallest tree in the forest of american life. It was a terrible blow the nation staggered. Its heart flutted. Its pulse stopped. But, "It's God's way." The President has been buried. More recently the rascally murderer has been executed according to the law, for which he had no regard, and has gone to stand before the great judge, for whom he did not care. It is time now to ask, What does all mean? Which way is God lead up? What lesson is there in it for all? God has already taught us that no government can exist "half care and half free." It is true that we learned that lesson only arter the nation had been baptised in blood and the Great Seer, who had him first proclaimed the doctrine as a "divided house" could not lead, had become the first of our unruly Presidents. It must be, that God wants to teach us that no government can exist where the rights of the humblesi citizen are denied or abridged. Or put it differently and more in keeping with the incidents of the last few weeks, God wants to teach us that so long as the life of the humblest individual in the Republic is in danger, the life of the highest citizen is not safe Lawlessness is a disease. Crime goes in schools like fish. Anarchy is to the body politic what an eating cancer is to the human body. Lawlessness must be checked; crime must be lessened; anarchy must be wiped out; the right to life, liberty and property must be guaranteed and maintained; or, else, the Republic cannot endure. The talk of the relations between capital and labor demands instant and ready relief, and this question must be settled up on a broad and humanitarian basis. It is well for us to give Cuba its freedom, and it is well for us by some process of "benevolent assimilation" to extend the "blessings of liberty" to the Fillipino. But God wants us to bear in mind, also, the agonies and heartache of the oppressed at home. The President's death, sad as it was, may serve to call attention to these things, and may ensue to the good of the Nation by compelling the best people of all races to band themselves together in favor of law and order and human rights as against all forms of outlawry and discrimination. No other race has ever looked in the face of the all-conquering Anglo Saxon race and lived, except the American Negro. And the Negro has been able to do it, because God has fought for him. God permitted a Negro to be the first man to stay the hand of the President's murderer in order to call the attention of the Nation and the world to the Negro's patriotism and the Negro's love for law and order. Never in all the history of America has a traitor been found under a black skin. Never, in all history of Ameiica has the Negro raised the hand of treason against the American flag or American institutions. John Wilkes Booth was not a Negro. Charles J. Guitean was not a Negro. Leon F. Czolgosz, the third of the trinity of bloody assassins, was not a Negro. When President McKinley was shot down, the Negro was where he has always been from the foundation of government — on the side of the government to protect and defend it. And the sense of justice which abides in the hearts of the dominant race in America cannot permit it long to disregard a race that, as a whole, always throws the weight of its influence in favor of constituted authority and not in favor of anarchy riot and bloodshed. Cherryvale Mrs J. W. Smith has taken her departure to K. C. Saturday night. The N B C; had their installation, Fri. night and report a good time. Mrs Norah Hook who deserted her home, husband and two children, last summer passed through the city, a few days a go enroute for Guthrie Okla.; and as she was pass K of P By G. C. Look after the Time will not desire to do so. A good maxi think more. "It's God's way." The American Republic is being weighed in the balance. There is nothing beyond republicanism save anarchy; and it will be for America to say which shall triumph. The eyes of the world are turned toward America, and, if we fail in our effort at local self-government, no other country will dare to take up where we leave off. There is a vast deal more to be done than to increase our territory, regulate the money standard, build a giant navy, equip a standing army, and control the commerce and manufactures of the world. Over and above any of these and kindred questions, like Chimborazo above the clouds, stands out the bare question of human rights. America must see to it that every man has a fair and honest chance for life, liber'y and happiness wherever the American flag floats. Invidious distinctions must be relegated to the rear. The color of a man's skin must no longer regulate the capacity of his brains money, character or social standing. God is speaking. Shall we not heed? If we do not, He will speak again in louder tones. "It's God's way." The Nation will be safe in President Roosevelt's hunds, if the people are true. The Nation would be unsafe under any President, if the people were not true. I believe that under God, President Roosevelt is the one man of the Republic who, by distinction and training, is the best fitted to lead the American Nation in God's way. S. X. FLOYD. The Milk Maid's Convention at Peerless hall. Thanksgiving night, eclipsed any thing ever before given by any church at that hall. It was given under the auspices of the A. M.E. church and the large crowd which greeted the milk maids was an honor to the members of that church and their pastor. The large and spacious hall was filled to overflowing. Standing room was scarce. An ancient ship was recently discovered in the bed of the old River Lea, in England. The vessel, found at a depth of seven feet below the surface, is about fifty feet long and is constructed of oak throughout, with the exception of the keel, which is of elm. Cherryvale Mrs J. W. Smith has taken her departure to K. C. Saturday night. Mrs Norah Hook who deserted her home, husband and two children, last summer passed through the city, a few days a go enroute for Guthrie Okla.; and as she was passing through one of the well known fellows had a quite a talk with her and she says she would desire to come back home as she is tired of staying a way from home. Mr. Armstrong took his departure for the Nation early th's morning, and will return to morrow. Carl Bailey was fined $11.00. Saturday, in police court, for carring conceal weapons. Mrs Dahs Bryant, spent the summer with her husband in Wichita has returned to our city. Mrs M. Knox is on sick list Saturbay morn. the city, was arroused by a large fire on E. Main St. the fire consisted of 3 burldings the colored Store, bycicle shop and the residents of Mrs. Jennie Washington's nothing was saved but the things out of the bycicle shop. Iola News. A cold wave visit us last week and made us turn on more gas. Rev. T. W. Green preached at the 2nd Baptist church Sunday morn and evening this being his regular appointment. The union is growing nicely and the subjects are very niteresting. And are ably discussed. We invite more to attend. Mrs J, W. Winslow and sister Mrs W. N. Hogan of Chanute Kan came up Friday, of last week and were initiated Saturday eve in the daughter of Tabernacle Lodge. The Tabernacle, gave a very fine concert on the 23rd and had a fine success. The choir of the 2nd Baptist church will give a concert on Thank giving night for the benifit of the church. Mr. Pane Shefard is improving very rapidly. Rev. Young went to Chanute last Friday. Sun. beign his regular appointment. Mr. Geo. Newman has the Small-Pox. Mr. Will and Sim son Coker Wesley Woodard and E. G. Green has formeb a Thanks-giving hunting party. Of course they will kill time. K of P Notes By G. C. Jno. E. Lewis. Look after the delinquents. Time will not delay, although you desire to do so. A good maxim is to talk less and think more. Pythianism means generosity to the faults of others. Great talkers in a Logde room are generally little doers. Sentiments and good wishes will not build up the Order. Sympathy will never put bread into the mouth of the unprotected. Don't lapse out of any Order. Pay up and go ont honorably. All Brothers are examples. Are you on the right and progressive side? Don't imagine that you are the only hard working member in the Lodge. The past cannot be taken as an example of what the future will be. If you do your duty your debts will die with you and your debt to ynor family will also die with you. Is is not a great satisfaction to know that you have provided for the future of your loved ones. Take an interest in the workings of your Lodge and Order and don't be afraid of your voice at any time. Some members delight in criticizing at every opportunity some of their co-workers. This is not Pythianism. Promptness at all meetings, coupled with good discipline during the session, will make the Lodge room attractive How fickle some members can be. They will always move with the current, and desert it in time of adversity? Stick to your colors, always. Next Monday night week will be election in Toas Lodge. Let every member be in his seat to elect good loyal Knights for the ensuing term. Remember that a Grand representative is to be elected in Toas. Don't elect a man who never attends his Lodge and is never square on the book. Serve your apprenticeship first and learn all about the ins and outs of your Order. Don't get mad be cause you are not immediately elected to an office. NO.27 COLOMBIANS VICTORIOUS. United States Fulfills its Treaty Duty in Guarding Railroad. WAS MUCH BLOODY FIGHTING. Colon, Nov. 27.—An armed guard of marines from the United States battle-ship Iowa has re-established the transit across the Isthmus and details from the Iowa's marines are now protecting each passenger train. There has been fierce fighting at Empire station, on the railroad line between Panama and Colon, between the insurgents and the troops of the Colombian government, with very heavy losses on both sides. The government troops advanced and the fighting was stubborn all along the railroad line until Empire Station, a mile and a half distant was reached. The Liberals retreated slowly, Alban's men following them until the latter eventually reached Mataching station. Here General Alban met and conferred with Captain Perry of the Iowa, who was returning from Colon on an armored train. It is understood that Captain Perry will not allow the railroad to transport troops, consequently, General Alban and his men were forced to push ahead on foot. Between the stations of Cullebra and Empire over 150 killed and wounded men could be seen along the track. The sight is gruesome. There is no proper Red Cross organization and the wounded lack care. Three hundred of the Iowa's marines were landed to protect the property of the railroad and to insure the continuance of transit across the Isthmus. Washington,—It is pretty well understood here that there is to be no bombardment of Colon by either side. While Commander McCrea was given wide discretionary power and nothing was said to him about stopping the bombardment directly, nevertheless the department of state established a precedent in these matters last year when it instructed Mr. Gudger to warn some insurgents at Panama that they would not be allowed to bombard that port. Consul General Gudger's last dispatch was about as follows: "Our troops have arrived at Mataehan, one half of the way across the Isthmus. No obstruction and Colombian government seems to be victorious over the insurgents." Captain Perry, of the Iowa, reports that free transit across is reported to him. Colonel Lynch Talks. Paris, Nov. 26.—The election of Colonel Arthur Lynch to represent Galway way in the British house of commons is attracting considerable attention here, where the Colonel is residing. The newspapers publish his portrait as a Boer colonel. Colonel Lynch says that he does not expect to be molested at the opening of the parliament. Colonel Lynch said he had received information which convinced him that the Boer war would end within three months by a settlement securing to the Boers autonomy on the Australian model. Rescuers Met Death. Bluefield, W. Va., Nov. 25.—Eight of the principal officials in the working of the mines went to the mines to learn the true situation, and of those in it at the time of the explosion not accounted for, and have not been heard from since their entry. Another party, consisting of experienced miners, went in to rescue the lost party of eight, but returned and reported encountering such a quantity of black damp that it was impossible to proceed. All of the lost party are prominent in the coal field. Raid on Striking Miners. Madisonville, Ky., Nov. 26.—The famous camp of the striking miners is a thing of the past. There is nothing left to mark the rendezvous of those who defied the officers and the courts and gave the authorities so much trouble for the past two months, save marks of debris incident to camp life. All of the campers with the exception of a very few who escaped the officers, are prisoners behind the bars of the county jail THE SEARCHLIGHT. W. N. MILLER, Editor. RODE THE GOAT The boys of Hurculean lodge No 20 K. of P. held a big initiation last Friday night. C. C. Edw. Landrum, and his members had been feeding their goat on danymite and he was in the very best of trim. It was a master initiation, because all the candidates were master and past masters in goat riding. The boys went with a whoop and gallop; and as Thaddeus Summitt, one of the initiated odserved, 'it was warm' and, by the way, none were in a better position to judge the degree of warmth than was our favorite Thaddens Summitt. Then came one Chas H. Gordon who was "top notch" and was said to "be there with the goods," but somehow, somewhere, Charles forgot all about his "goods" We'll let him tell the rest. Then proudly stepped forward Ossie Webb but Ossie could not untangle himself from the webb which the goat had thrown about him, and thus his tale of woe. But Anderson Crumpt had been debating the matter in his mind and thought he had a "solution" o: the affair that was destined to lose the goat in the shuffle, but ah! the goat simply winked the other eye; and now see Crumpt. Sylvester Gregg came up smilingly as though the goat was some fair damsel whom he would win by smiles; but they availed him nothing. The lucky one's were: Thaddeus Summitt, Syl Greggs, Ossie Webb, Chas, H. Gordon, and Anderson Crumpt. Mrs. L. Crenshaw and Mr. Walter Gibbs were united in marriage last Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at the A. M. E. church. Rev. A. C-Terrill officiating. The Searchlight joins with the many friends of the contracting parties in wishing them a long, happy, and prosperous married life. IT IS FINISHED. On last Sunday night a large and appreciatable audience greeted Rev. H. V. Plummer at the 2nd Baptist chuch to witness the redemption of the pledges made by the members and friends about one month ago to raise the last cent owed. Rev. Plummer opened the services, after song by the choir and a very fervent prayer by Deacon S. W. Lea. In his opening remarks Rev. Plummer said he had reasons to fee grateful to the good people of Wichita who had so generously responded to his call and the call of his church. After a few further remarks he introduced Mr. Frank Sherman, a white gentleman who has taken much interest, socially and financially, in helping raise this debt. Mr Sherman began by reading a few scriptural verses and commenting. In his remarks he made a beautiful comparison of the colored race in 1865, emergering from a long siege of slavery, ignorant, penniless and homeless; to the colored race of 1901 educated, refined, property holders, bank depositors and good citizens. He paid a glowing tribute to the remarkable progress made by the colored race in America. Closing he said "with the splendid and most remarkable progress made by the colored people of America in the past thirty-odd years before us, we are made to wonder, if the same rap id pace of progress is maintained, what will be the achievements of this race in the next thirty years?" Mr. Sherman's address endeared him to his interested hearers. A ter which Mr. Sherman took charge of the pledge list, assisted by Rev Plummer, Deacon H. W. James; and Clerk Jas. L. Harper. Every pledge was paid. Oswego. Miss Alice Worley returned to Joplin Mo. Sunday. Mrs Nellie Washington, went to Parsons Saturday to visit relatives. WERMAN, OF BALTIMORE, SA BALTIMORE **Gentlemen — Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion.** About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my right ear. I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any access, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most esteemed ones, that told me that my ear was not only temporarily, that the headache did then cause, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever. I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the ear has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain Very truly yours. F. A. WERMAN, 730 S. Broadway, Baltimore, Md. Our treatment does not interfere with your usual occupation. Rxisation and advice free. (Being the Seliloquy of a Farmer on the Free Raw Sugar Question.) "Thar's a mighty lot er talkin' about farmers 'n thar rights, 'N the wonderful prosperity that beet growin' invites. Thar's a heap er foolish crowin' 'n the 'beats' begin ter shout 'n holler fer the Tariff ter keep free raw sugar out! But I notis that the beet-producin' farms are very few, An' the farmers through the country ain't got much ef it ter dew. The hull land ain't a-raisin' beets, 'n ain't goin' ter begin. Beet growin's right fer sum, I guess—but, whar dew I cum in? The farmer gits four dollars now for every ton o' beets— A hansom price, I must allow—but hidin' sum decrets. Beet sugar manyfacturers admit es they found Thet 'granylated' costs 'em sumthin' like ten cents a pound. In fact that leaves a profit on which they'd greatly thrive— And—if i' kin be sold for three, why should we pay 'em FIVE? It seems ter me es that's a game that's mighty like a skin— But—if that's any benefit—waal—whar dew I cum in? When Uncle Sam's in want o' cash we're glad ter help him out, 'N will stand all the taxes that are needed, never doubt. But when his pocket-book's well lined an' nary cent he lacks, Et seens ter me his duty's ter repeal that sugar tax. Tham fellers wot is interested sez its to protect The beet-producin' farmer that the duty they collect, But I guess that explanation es a little bit too thin— The sugar maker,—he's all right;—but—whar dew we cum in? Take off raw sugar duty an' the price will quickly fall, To everybody's benefit, fer sugar's used by all. The poor will bless the Government that placed it in thar reach— ('n millions of our c仪 zens free sugar now besech) The dealer 'll be delighted—less expenditure fer him— More demand 'n bigger profits—which at present are but slim. An' the farmer 'll be as well paid as he ever yet hes ben— But he'll buy his sugar cheaper—that's whar an' I'll cum in. Now, what's the sense er reason of the sugar tax to day, When our treasury's a-bulgin' an' we hew no debts ter pay? The duty on raw sugar's Fifty million every year— An' the people's got ter pay it—that's a fact that's very clear. Fifty million! Great Jerusalem! Ter protect beet magnates, too, Why should they tax ALL the people—just ter help a scattered FEW? And the FEW? Beet-sugar MAKERS! Don't it really seem a sin Thus ter help an' fill thar coffers? Whar dew you an' I cum in? The farmer growin' beets hes got a contract price for years.—Free raw sugar wouldn't hurt him, an' of it he hes no fears. But mebble, like myself—he's also growing fruit so nice—Ter preserve it—at a profit—he needs sugar—at a price! The repealing of the duty surely cuts the price in two—Thet'll make a mighty difference, neighbor, both ter me an' you! Let the sugar manyfactrer make such profits as he kin—Ter him it may seem right enuff—but whar dew I cum in? An' I ain't a-goin' ter swaller all the argyments they shout Thet the farmers need protection—an' must bar raw sugar out. Common sense is plainly showin' that the people in the land Want raw sugar free in future—an' its freedom will demand. 'Tis a tax no longer needed—hateful to the public view.—Taxing millions of our people to enrich a favored few. They can't blind me any longer with the foolish yarns they spin.—While they're busy makin' money—whar dew you and I come in? I'm a-goin' ter keep on hustlin', talkin', pleadin' with my frends.—Ain't no sense in lettin' gain that harf selfish pirvet ends. I'm a-goin' ter write ter-morrer to my Congressman 'nd say Thet he ougher do his best ter kill that tax without delay! Feller-farmers, do your utmost—whether you grow beets or not To repeal the tax on sugar—you can but improve your' lot! Cheaper sugar helps your pocket, greater blessings you can win—When we've three-cent granulated—that's whar you an' I come in!' Yours for Health Lydia C. Pinkham Lydia E.
