SEC. BAKER ON ASSOCIATED NEGRO PRESS CHICAGO.—In a specially prepared statement to the Associated Negro Press, of which Claude A. Barnett is Director and Nahum Daniel Brascher, Editor in Chief, with executive offices in Chicago, Secretary of War Newton D Baker has expressed appreciation for the work of the colored newspapers during the World War. The statement says: "I am glad to avail myself of the opportunity presented by the forthecoming publication of an Annual by the Associated Negro Press to express both my appreciation of the work which this press did during the trying days of the war and my earnest hope that it will continue wielding its tremendous influence upon the members of the colored race in the interest of that steady, loyal Americanism which the race showed in the great crisis. "All people are alike in this, that the soundness of their opinions is exactly in proportion to the reliability of the facts upon which those opinions are formed. If those who report and disseminate information are zealous to see that no distortion arises either from prejudice, impatience or negligence, the people whose opinions are to be formed will respond with straight-thinking and sound conclusions. Thus, the press of any country, whether the general press or that ministering to a particular group has both a great responsibility and great power. I am not thinking so much of the influence of editorial opinion as I am of the serenity sureness, and accuracy with which facts themselves are reported; but even in editorial opinion it is still true that a great field of leadership exists, and it will be a blessing Madam C. Phone B. 4400 MADISON, WIS., SATURDAY APRIL 10. 1920 GENERAL WOOD STANDS FOR LAW AND ORDER It should have a rebuking sound and meaning to many of the public men of the Nation to have it said of General Leonard Wood that he stands for law and order. It should be possible to say that much of every public man in the country, as it should be of every person who claims to be a citizen and has his claim allowed as a matter of law and practice. But it is far from being the case with those who may be considered as average statesmen and those who may be regarded as average citizens. The average statesman is only one by courtesy. He does not stand for principles but for his personal interests and advancement. He is an opportunist what Lord Macaulay called "a trimmer," and will seldom declare himself squarely on any question of principle unless he is sure that a majority of the voters are in favor of it. Such a statesman is often a marplot and sometimes a traitor, where his personal interests conflict with the public interests. General Leonard Wood wants to receive the Republican nomination for the Presidency. He is a brave man in peace as he has been in war, and is not afraid of his shadow; he will not run away from it in a tight place nor authorize it to run away from him. Such a man is reliable in any obligation he assumes. He may be trusted. We say this much without being a partisan of General Wood in the sense that we are "rooting," as the baseball enthusiasts are termed, for his nomination. We desire, for the good of the Negro people and of all the people of the country, that a man of General Wood's ability and courage and honesty shall be nominated for the Presidency, not only by the Republican party but by the Democratic party as well. We desire always to have in the White House, whatever party he may represent, the strongest and best man in the Nation. This has not always been the case, and it will not always be the case, because politics is politics, a gamble and juggle, in which the best does not always come to the top. In his address at the Lincoln League convention in Chicago, recently, a synopsis of which was published in the Journal, and Guide, of March 6, General Wood spoke, as did many other Republican aspirants for the nomination. He took high ground upon the vital question of law and order as essential and against mob violence as being "barbarous and inhuman." "It is a relic of savagery and should be so treated" he said. That is the brave and honest view of the matter, and in handling the mob situation at Omaha, General Wood proved that he was talking what he had practiced when in authority. We want as President of the United States a man of the character of General Wood. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH GLENCO, ILL. Rev. A. Moore. D. D.. Pastor Rev. A. Moore, D. D., Pastor The first Baptist Church of Glenco is rendering great service to the community. Its popular pastor Rev. Moore is a young progressive minister with a vision. He has so organized his forces that all the departments of his church is in a flourishing condition. The Rev. is a polished gospel preacher. His staff of officers is in full accord with him and they are planning and raising funds for a new edifices. MISS LYDIA SCOTT Student of the School of Fine and Applied Arts, Milwaukee Prize Winner in Y. W. C. A. Poster Contest MISS LYDIA SCOTT Student of the School of Fine and Applied Arts, Milwaukee Prize Winner in Y. W. C. A. Poster Contest TO THE COLORED REPUBLI CANS NORTH, EAST AND WEST The Mississippi State Republican Convention on April 1, 1920, unanimously instructed me for National Republican Committee for the State of Mississippi for the next four years. Each and all of the eight Congressional Districta Conventions also instructed for me for National Cocommittee man. But there is a handful of "Lily Whites" with three or four colored men, who are doing their bidding, that are threatening to hold another pretende dConvention to defeat my confirmation by the National Committee by trumping up a trivial contest. Now, at our State and District Conventions, there were about as many colored as white and we elected just about the same of colored delegates to the National Convention. At our State Convention we had represented 80 out of 82 of the Counties of the State. I was not elected National Committee merely by my own people, but I was elected by conventions made up of both colored and white republicans. Notwithstanding this fact, this handful of "Lily Whites" will go before the National Committee at Chicago and seek to unseat me because of my racial identity, and the only weapon that they hope to use in this effort is the fact that they are white men. I want to appeal to you to send representatives to see the National Cocommittee of your respective States and urge him to see to it that we are given a square deal. I have a delegation of 19 men representative of the best white republicans and colored republicans of the State of Mississippi—men of wealth, of character, of attainment and other essentials and pre-requisites to good citizenship. I appeal to you to not allow us to be slaughtered at the hands of those who place color above party and greed for office above justice. We who are toiling and sacrificing here in the south-land commit our fate into the hands of you and believe that yo uwill protect us. Rev. Boyd Visits City Rev. Henry Allen Boyd of Nashville, Tenn., arrived in the city in time to attend the funeral of Willie Thomas, son of Rev. and Mrs. John F. Mr. Rice in City Mr. William Rice of Lake Forest spent considerable time in the city during the week on business. While here, Mr. Rice took up some negotiations along the northshore with the Bailey Realty Co. Editor J. Anthony Josey passed through the city Wednesday enroute to Philadelphia, Pa. Passes Through City Mr. Charles Satehell Morris, Jr., the well known orator of Norfolk, Va., who is touring the states in interest of Leonard Wood as pres- LENROOT FOR PRESIDENT There has been considerable speculation by the press as to the probable choice by the Republican Party of the candidate to make the run for president in 1920, and in this connection the name of Senator Lenroot has been frequently mentioned. It is true our opinion has not been sought in this matter and our advice at this time might appear a bit gratuitous. But inasmuch as we purpose to support the Republican candidate in the coming election providing he is not conspicuously inferior to other noninees, we venture the modest suggestion that the G. O. P. might look far and wide and find many able Republicans less available as presidential timber than Irvine L. Lenroot, the junior senator from Wisconsin. It can generate and circulate more unadulterated hell in five minutes than all the host of angels can quench in eternity. The Scandal Monger is the highest, most finished and at the same time the lowest and most shameless type of gossip or purveyor of vicious personalities. It is the common backyard-garden variety of gossip what the highly trained musical artist is to the mere beginner. To produce it, requires not only a native aptitude, but long training supplemented by a suitably vicious environment. Like the toadstool or fungus it thrives and reaches its highest stage of development in a damp measmic and noisesome atmosphere. Neither plant nor animal, it is a "thing" of uncertain origin and miserable finish. The natural prey of this foul caterer to human weaknesses are young girls just budding into womanhood and others, who have before them a life of promise. Yet men and women of maturer years, even gray haired grandfathers' and grandmothers are not wholly immune to their vile attacks. From the eradle to the grave, like a vulture, it camps upon the trail of the human family. To it, a suspicion against one of good repute, is proof as strong as holy writ; a mere suggestion, verification beyond all question of doubt. Upon its long slimy tongue, a tit-bit of evil report is rolled like a bon-bon until it loses its savor by constant repeatings. In itself it supposes the entire world is unclean. In brief this is a picture of the Scandal Monger. Shun it. SUITS made to your $18.00 measure Sent on approval delivery charges prepaid for you to try and examine before you decide to keep it. FREE. Two new sections are added to the statute bearing upon the office of town road superintendent, which in brief, are as follows: "The town board shall appoint and fix the compensation of a competent person* to superintend the construction and repair of all highways and bridges in the town, under their general supervision, and such person shall be known as superintendent of highways. He shall be appointed in writing for a term of one year and such writing shall be filed with the town clerk. He may be removed for cause by the town board and vacancies shall be filled by the town board. He shall be paid in lieu of all compensation an annual salary, payable monthly, either out of the bridge and road fund or the general fund of the town. He may be paid in addition, an amount per month for the upkeep of a horse and vehicle or automobile or motor truck. Such allowance for vehicle shall be fixed by the town board at a regular or special meeting and the town board is empowered to discontinue this practice in their discretion at any meeting of the board. ```markdown ``` WONDERFUL TETTER SALVE This is one of the best known cures for Dandruff, Tetter, or Eczema.
