LET US JOIN HANDS IN A HEARTY
WELCOME TO OUR BOYS
WHEN THEY RETURN
FROM "OVER THERE"
Let our part in this home-coming be of such that will demonstrate that sort of Democracy that knows neither race, color, nor creed.
A few ninths ago we started our boys on on one of the greatest missions that has ever been allotted to America; helping to make the world a fit place for the principles of Democracy. Many of the men have broken up their homes, sold and sacrificed their savings, given up good occupations to fight our battles.
The home-coming of our soldiers should be made one continuous ovation. The party reception should be as spontaneous as democratic as was the reception of the peace telegram of November 11th. It should not be a question of whose boy, or of what race or whether he was in the front trenches; but rather an open arm, whole soul, genuine American welcome; given in old-fashion Western style.
Those boys whether in American Training Camps or in the trenches have discharged duty assigned them. They have made it possible for you and I to look every man in the eye and demand that Democracy be extended to all people.
It is our desire that a representative from each church and fraternal organization, and forum, one or two in number, meet at the Y. M. C. A. on Monday evening, November 25th for the purpose of organizing a committee to make plans for the reception of the boys. It is our desire that this committee be as democratic in its personal as possible. Therefore we urge that all churches, lodges and civic bodies take due notice and have one or two representatives from each organization.

The letter from Mrs. Eva Carter Buckner published in your paper of the 16th. Inst. was a very timely warning to us and should apply to many other questions and conditions. We have just elected a splendid young man of ability to the State legislature and it is our duty to lend him every possible encouragement and leave it to him to discover for himself the avenues of a successful law maker. In California we need no race legislation but we may need race men and friends to prevent enactment of law inimical to our civil rights, a du-Frederick M. Roberts, shall we be content with one race man in the hall of legislation for a single term or shall we like men and women intelligently and thoughtfully see to it that there shall be no more legislatures without our quota of representatives. We all admit that we have been sleeping over opportunities easily within our reach for in union there is strength and with the people united we can re-elect Mr. Roberts two years hence and send along with him some other ambitious qualified young race man. Mr. Roberts will be on trial, it will be his duty to show to the people of the state that within the hand of Negro law makers the peace and prosperity of the state will be safe guarded and it's dignity never allowed to fall. Let us devise ways and means in time to show our

selves an important factor in the population of the city and the state, the time is now ripe for the creation of a state organization of men and women who have faith in the ability of the people of the race and who desire representation along with taxation and who desire to help our young men rise to the heights along with those of other races, such an organization properly conducted, with unselfish men in change, who would not deceive the people of trade them but for a mess of pottage, men of too much regard for the welfare of all the people of the city and the state to prove himself a traitor, not a one man organization but one by the people and for the people, keeping up an intense interest politically twelve months in every year, much care would necessarily have to be initiated in the selection of officers and directors in the creation of the such a movement, men and women should not be selected out of favor nor out of past political activities but for their real worth to care for the interest of the people first, let the officers seek the officer for the first impression made by the selection of officers who are nothing more or less than the servants of the people and not their women will depend the life and the usefulness of the organization. All race people who think along this line can well understand how very effective for good such a body of men and women would be at this period. For nearly two years our country has been at war for democracy, still on account of color we are discriminated against and we wonder if, or not the sacrifice made will count in our favor or stand to our credit when all the excitement has ceased, or shall we again stand facing an impregnable wall of caste prejudice as has been the case after we have emerged from numerous victorious battle fields all the way from 1776 to 1781 through all of which we have been praised on one hand and

The Recital is of special interest from two points. Not only will Los Angeles be thrilled as never before but also many young hearts will be made to beat in glad rhythm. Yes, part of the proceeds of this Recital will go towards laying the foundation of a place of recreation for the Negro girl and young woman of Los Angeles. It is the young Negro woman and girl that is demanding such a place. It is the young Negro woman and girl that is rolling up her sleeves; getting ready to prepare such a place. It is for the purpose of using our best sane and sober judgement and for the compelling of those who persist in taking every thing in sight that I am advising this course, we are in a measure responsible for many of the disadvantages we suffer because we fail to stand together, jealousy within our ranks and so often being deceived by our own trusted servants seem to have accepted to the place that we hardly know who within our ranks is trustworthy however let us make one more effort and organize a "Tamany" in Los Angeles, let us dig down and maintain it without the aid of candidates so that we will not commercialize the people, let us do it on business principles so that it will command the respect and confidence of both white and colored people as a political factor in the affairs of this City and State, our boys will soon be coming home and we have no agency at work raising money to give them the reception worthy of the heroic service they have rendered the Nation. Shall we not do these things.2
TO THE CITY CHURCHES.
In keeping with the custom of the Minister's Union of observing Thanksgiving Day in union, all city churches are invited to unite with us in service on November 28th at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. McCorkle, pastor of the A.M. E. Zion Church will deliver the Thanksgiving sermon. All church choirs are requested to unite with the Tabernacle Choir in furnishing music for the occasion. This service is held annually in the interest of our boy membership in the Y. M. C. A. an organization which the Minister's Union fosters without reservation. Let all come and rejoice together.

From Her Son, Arthur C. Cole,
Mr. Cole is a Bugler in Company

My dear Mother:
At last your loving son is in the realm of France, where it fills me with awe and delight to write you. I am sure that you have spent many sleepless nights in wonder as to my whereabouts and safety. I am so glad and grateful to the Almighty to be able to tell you that I am well and safe and am getting along fine.
It was a pleasant but uneventful trip across the water; but with the constant aberrance of the crew, a few alarming rumors of danger and a couple of shots fired from the cannons. Our long journey of many days was finally ended with at least a little excitement.
The little that I have seen of this country does not permit me to exeze a great deal of beautiful scenery while traveling; but not to compare with that in the dear old golden West. I find the French people a gracious lot. Nowhere have we been here that we have not been warmly welof these people is most inspiring. When they greeted our boys one could readily see by the expression on their faces that their hearty cheers and greetings were far inadequate to express their gratitude to the boys for the sacrifice we are making for them.
Indeed I do realize it a great sacrifice to have to leave so loving a mother as you, and how I do miss you! No one will be more glad than I when we will have finished this job over here; so that I can hasten back to you, whom I do love so sincerely.
I know you would be interested to know of my exact location here and of the daily activities of the organization that I am proud to be a member of, but to tell you that; I am not permitted. I do not mind this however as I will have all these interesting things to tell you when I return.
I have met many of my school mates over here and many other familiar faces do I see from different parts of the country.
I received a most interesting letter from Mrs. Garrott in the South and she told me that Alva is over here. I would certainly like to see him here. Is Vena over here yet?
Maybe I wouldn't like to meet my pals Makey and Gillespie. It is certainly a shame the way I neglect writing them at Camp Sheridan. Mother, I want you to do me a favor that I am sure would be a pleasure for you. It is this, take a trip to Elsinor and visit Mrs. Farthing, Mackey's mother and ask her for me, if Mackey is safe and please get his address for me.
How do you feel to be back home in dear old California? I think of the folks there so often. Do give my regards to all that remember me.
How are all the home folks? Give my love to all. Sister's Recitals there were a success. I am sure.
It does make me feel blue to think of the many days it will be before I can hear from you. Do write me a long letter and tell me everything that you possibly can. I am going to write, you again even before you receive this so you will hear from me often. With much love and many kisses, I am.
Your loving son,
ARTHUR C. COLE.

News reaches us that Miss Myrtle Anderson who was for several weeks seriously ill with the Influenza at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Mays of Marshall, Texas, is now quite recovered and has resumed her tour. Miss Anderson was stopping at the residence of this well-known divine of Marshall, Rev. Mays, when both he and wife were taken ill with the epidemic. Miss Anderson rendered her service as nurse proving to be a good one as both Rev. and Mrs. Mays Recovered. Leaving the bodies of the patients the disease entered into that of nurse and fought hard against her. Miss Anderson conquered as usual and is now in Longview Texas enroute to Dallas engaged in her work of speaking for her people.

Noted Gospel Preacher. Pastor of Church of Christ. Will preach at their new quarters in Central Hall, as soon as Influenza ban is lifted.
NOW IT IS APPARENT WHY PRODUCERS ARE NEEDED.
With an unerring foresight the EAGLE has foretold the neccessity of any people who dared to hope to march in the front rank of progress; that they must become producers, and the bigger producer the greater service, they would render not only themselves, but posterity as well.
Now our contention is apparent to all, forcibly so, when economic conditions have been adjusted as a result of the war, the people who really count in the new order of things or those that get right in line and bring things to pass. Here in this unexcelled climate, has been lying dormant for many years, vast acreages of lands, ready to yield to many have availed themselves of this opportunity, and they now, are the bone and sinew of real progress in this section. In the Imperial valley great strides, are being made and scores of this people are becoming producers.
There are yet many opportunities in this section, and you who cannot see; Should realize that this opportunity will not last much longer, if you do not you are dull and stupid indeed. So to become a producer in California you must hurry. Some of our own citizens, have been blind to the fact that producers are the salvation of a people and have fought the efforts of those who would pave the way, they have been content to do nothing themselves, and were only disturbed when it looked like others were about to do something. The EAGLE has ever been to the forefront for producing PRODUCERS; and we have not been particular where the start is made, just so production is the result let it be southern California or Lower California it's all the same to us, the idea is to become real producers.

At the writing of this notice, the prospects for the churches being opened on Sunday are very well balanced in doubt, but if the judgement of the law is that it is safe and wise for such toleration we mayly invite one and all to the services. Rev. Mrs. Mary E. Wilson, an evangelist will break the bread of life for those who worship at the First A. M. E. Zion church.
We are asked by the program committee of the Y. M. C. A. to include in our announcement that the annual Thanksgiving sermon for the Y. M. C. A. will be preached at the Tabernacle Baptist Church by Rev. J. McCorkle R. D. pastor of the church mentioned in the notes. This selection having been made by the miisters Union.
If it may not be characterized as sinful indifference and a shameful satisfaction at the inequality of the meeting of justice and a criminal admission of our shallow-estimate of the value at our preaching the gospel, then we (ministers) have exhibited a splendid example of patience and contentment; even the dailies that would be among the last to be affected by closing orders are beginning to make critical comments. But after all, if the officers would put a bar on the cheque on the first of the month would we not howl some too?

E. E. Lightner, Pastor.
After six weeks' of uninterrupted cessation from our regular church services, on account of the Spanish Influenza in our midst, the indications are that we shall be permitted to resume these services the coming Lord's Day, November 24th. I am sure all our hearts beat as one with the Psalmist who exclaimed, "I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord." Ps. 122:1. Let us make this a day of great rejoicing and thanksgiving. The day will be observed as Thanksgiving Sunday. The pastor will occupy the pulpit morning and evening. His morning theme will be: "Grounds of Gratitude!" evening. "What Should I Render?" Every member and friend is urged to attend one or both of these services.
The pastor wishes again to thank the loyal members and friends who have raised so loyalty in keeping up the current expenses of the church, during these closed days.
Sunday services as follows: Sunday School, 9:45 a.m.; Preaching at 11:45 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Junior C.E., 4:00 p.m.; Christian Endeavor, 6:30 p.m. All are invited.
This church will join in the Union Thanksgiving Service on Thursday of next week at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Hey J., M. McCorkle will preach the service. Service at 11:40 a.m. Let everyone attend this service.

Indications are that the end, for which Rev. J. E. McCorkle in last weeks edition of this paper, expressed himself as anxiously waiting and武能fully hoping is about to come. We are glad to cherish hope that we are about to assemble in church for public worship, for which worship there is no substitute.
Absence from God's house, for more than six weeks has, we trust, made the heart for it, grow fonder. God has peculiarly blessed us, in that He has supplied our need in every way, during these days of anxious waiting the fighting of the Flu ban May the Psalmist utterance be the sincere voice of our hearts: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." This period of enforced idleness will not be without its effects upon the organizations of our church, a thing which we all regret. But the faithful members and friends of our church have worked so unfurlingly for three years that we feel that they are richly entitled to the rest which they have, in a measure enjoyed.
No congregation has worked harder or produced grander results, in the face of such tremendous odds. During the past year, our people fairly outdid themselves, our remarkable achievement of September last, when out of our small earnings, we paid $1,200.00 upon the alter, is a thing of which we feel very proud. During the past year $6,000.00, in cold cash has been paid on our church debt, to say nothing of $968.00 interest in full. One mortgage has been paid off and cancelled and the debt on our church and property has been reduced to $9,000.00 and it is to be remembered that the building is not yet two years old. Current expenses have in the meantime been kept up, so that Sunday will find us after six weeks of inactivity, during which time not one dollar has been received for church purposes with all bills paid to on. The Lord wonderfully blessed this congregation in that up to this time we have not lost a member by death. The members and friends have been very thoughtful of the welfare of the pastor and his family and their kindness shall never be for gotten. When the ban is lifted let every one be in their accustomed place. Strangers and visitors are always welcome to the services of this church.

R. N. Holt, Pastor.
Autocatering an "open door" on next Sunday, we take this method or informing the public that St. Paul will welcome you to your accustomed place, where will be had a meeting befitting the occasion.
While the peace wave dash high upon the shores of industrial expectancy and the ship of state strives to right herself amid troubled waters, let the Christian Religion, like Elijah, come from its hiding and show itself to Ahab.
The church men who prove to be a slacker now in this perilous time when the Lord needs him most, should be given a slacker's reward. We need not settle down to "chuckle" congratulations, feeling that we have evaded the hammer of fate; it is mute to say that because of your wickedness, disregard for God's House and pharisee services in which God has no part; a greater catastrophe will ever long sweep down the skies and startle a people who have forgotten God.
If God was unable to protect us and safeguard His own interests in times of an epidemic, it doesn't seem reasonable that He could secure a peace everlasting. In fact, if by our own efforts we have become victors over enemies and disease, we owe praise to ourselves." Rather!
Come back to Zion, God is not dead neither has He surrendered to the Huns of fashion, greed and gain. There are yet many thousand in Israel who have never bowed to Raal. Meet us at St. Paul, Sunday morning at 6 o'Clock, and we will be with you in the greatest meeting of the season. Don't worry about lunch, those who do not fast will be served in the dining room. All are invited. Pastor Holt is feeling fine, having been cared for by the faithful of his stock during this suspension.

A voluntary movement has been inaugurated by some of our thoughtful members and has gained much popularity and which if adopted will mean that the church will not lose any thing because of the weeks and worshipless Sundays just passed. They have been laying aside their usual offerings, including the first Sunday offering and will contribute same as a whole on opening day. Let as many as possible do likewise.

Last Sabbath was another quiet day. The people of God spent the time in the reading of Scriptures and meditation. The "ban" having been fitted in Pasadena, many persons from Los Angeles went over there to worship and were delighted with the services of God's House. In the evening I worshipped with Rev. Dr. Tillman and his good people at Friendship Church. Much erudit is due the young people of the Church for their excellent spirit, and attitude in their attendance of the B. Y. PP. U. meetings. They have a real live President and very efficient corpse of Teachers, who together with their well-prepared Pastor, evidently have things in good order. In delivering the message, I took for the Text, Psa. 146:12. The Lord gave us quite a blessing, both in the presentation, and reception of His word. Dr. Tillman is a very capable Minister and appears to be training his people in right directions. The Teacher of Historical Sunday Lessons, gave good account of himself, as also the choir under the splendid leadership of Captain Reynolds. On the whole, I was thanked well.

Our church will take part in the annual Thanksgiving service at the Tabernacle Baptist church at 11 oclock on Thanksgiving day. Rev. J. E. McCorkle of the First A. M. E. Zion church will preach the sermon.
We take this means of thanking our loyal members and friends for the splendid support of the church during the closed period. We raised sufficient funds to meet all claims, with a small balance in the trustees treasury.

The service at this church Sunday will be as usual if Providence favors us to open as we hope to do.
On Thanksgiving day the big services as arranged some time ago at the First A. M. F. church hooking forward to the consumption of the bond rally has been changed, somewhat, the service will be more of a refreshing of the minds of the friends about the work as well as a reunion.

John the Revereler saw when the lamb opened the first seal and he saw and behold a white horse which represents peace and he that sat upon him had a how which was a covenant to Noah and all flesh that came out of the ark which was the sign of the covenant and a crown was given unto him and he went forth conquering and to conquer, this is the word of God. We turn to Revelations 19: 11 verse, John says I saw Heaven open and behold. A White Horse and he that sit upon him was called faithful and true, in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head many crowns, and he had a name written that no man knew but himself and he was clothed with a vestry dipped in blood and his name is called the word of God, and the armies, which were in Heaven followed him upon his white horses clothed in fine linen, white and clean, and out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations, and

The members and friends of the New Hope Baptist Church were again blessed with two inspiring services Sunday. Pastor Reed preached in the morning from Luke 2:14. "Glory to God in the Highest, on earth Peace and Good will toward men." subject. "Real Peace." It was the pastor's peace sermon. It was timely and well delivered.
At the evening service. Rev R. H. Wade. Missionary for Southern California. of the Western Baptist Association, preached. It is needless to say that it was one among the best ever listened to by Rev. Wade.
The Revival is now in progress here, conducted by the Missionary. The weather is very inclement at this time, therefore the attendance is not what would be otherwise, but we are looking forward for better evenings later in the week.

End of World War—Wonderful
Achievement.
The human outlook upon life has been changed in a moment. The Allied nations now and for a century become sponsor for all that Democracy contemplates. The army and the Navy of our country and of the Allies have been the faithful instruments in winning the victory we now hear with unbound joy. The great shall I say great—the bloody hate that for more than four years dreaded the earth with the blood of ten millions of her sons is now a fact of history. So soon we right about face. We demobilize to mobilize but battles greater than the Marne or Verdun are to be fought. The scene of conflict is transformed from battle
front to Legislative hall. Let us pray that this victory day is in very truth the natal day of freedom to men everywhere upon the face of the globe. The smaller countries to the South of the U.S. shall wait impatiently the issue of this world-wide history. And the more than two millions of Americans citizens of color who in every conflict for the nation's honor, have sent cheerfully their best blood, and in this giants' struggle have given a half million
then, wait the righting of their many wrongs. Loyal as they are and royalties is our great American heart, the colored American who side-by-side with every other soldier in this tic-tal. THIRTEEN—tanic conflict has been the hero of heroes, and his constituents at home have backed his deeds of daring with a hundred per cent loyalty. In the work of reconstruction—in this new day of the new freedom—in this land of the free and the home of the brave the American colored citizen asks you share the first fruits of Democracy alike to him as to all men.
An informal announcement of the wedding of Mrs Lucy Adams and Mr Walter Segree will take place on Thanksgiving day. The couple are well-known young people and claim a host of friends

The election of F. M. Roberts to the Assembly demonstrates the possibilities of what can be accomplished by a united tront.
Stooping to conquer is sometimes justifiable, but when a newspaper continues to submerge in order to stay above the surface, it loses caste as well as prestige.
The signing of the Armistice has been the signal which designates the reign of real and true democracy, and unless we receive the same, the war has been fought in vain.
With Peace at hand, let us at no far distant date, have peace, on some of the war prices relating to the commodities of life.
The effort by our people to do their bit towards a fitting welcome for the returning soldiers is to be commended and we trust that all will enter into the spirit of the movement and make it an unqualified success. Every Bonafied race organization should get in line for this affair, and let it be known that the issuedo, irresponsible spot light seeker is not wanted and will not be tolerated..
The raising of the ban which has been in effect on all public gatherings, will no doubt be hailed with much joy and delight by all of our organizations, more especially the church and fraternal bodies; For in someway or another the people appreciate that close touch, whereby each one can help share the other's burden, and now as they begin to assemble again many will be missed from tehir former stations; The grim reaper has exacted a mighty toll, and when they meet it will be a gathering indeed of mixed joy and sorrow.
We note that the Eastern race papers are not taking cognizance of the fact that a race man was elected to the Assembly from this city; But they had just as well wake up to the fact, that the Negroes of the coast are attending to business, and even they are so narrow as not to see things so far away, we are going right ahead along progressive lines and outdo anything they have accomplished along the lines of real progress. We are alive to the fact that the boys over the mountain hold us, in the same estimation that the Kaiser held America, but now they will be compelled to sing another song:
The conference at the peace table is about to take place at which time it is to be hoped that real democracy will be promulgated to all the peoples of the earth; Let us hope that with the representatives of all the peoples present, that they will see to it that the door of hope shall stand ajar for all; And that in so much as the Black American gave such a vivid demonstration of his worth, in the events which brought about this Worlds Peace conference; that he shall no longer be the victim of proscription and that at his very own home he too shall enjoy this great democracy and that now is the time to speak up and let his desires be known. There is no question with the fall of autocracy, should be the fall of taxation without representation, also the banishment of the lynchers rope, and the chains whict bind ten million souls down. By all means let the people of this the mightiest nation of all be Free: Really Free.
We appreciate very much the many letters of congratulations for the small part we played in the election of Mr. Roberts to the Assembly, and we also appreciate the fact that the victory was of such magnitude for real democracy, that all of the forces which brought it about can share in the victory.
With the black eye given to the bare-foot and irresponsible leadership, in the passing of events, it demonstrates the fact that the people are after all the force with which to get lasting results.

game and, in the mix-up he was arrested, and taken to jail at the instigation of Officer Watson.
We do not believe either one of these boys were guilty and we appreciate their cause for complaint, but of the gang which causes these troubles in this vicinity they should be dealt with harshly. The gang should be broken up. They have no right to impose on the merchants of this section and their offence cannot for one moment be condoned.
THE ROUGH HOUSE TACTICS OF THE 12TH ST HOODLUM MUST NOT BE CONDONED.
Out on 12th street at Birch and Central and adjacent points there has been much complaint of a gang of boys who congregate at these places and indulge in profane and obscene language, and too frequently commit depredations on passersby, and in other ways make themselves thoroughly disgusting and a menace to the community. The parents of these boys should take drastic measures to control this situation before something serious results from the same. A level-headed officer should be detailed especially to break up this gang, if not serious results are apt to overtake them.
Only last Friday night on account of the acts of this gang it is said, two young men, entirely innocent, were compelled to spend the night in the City Jail. Now as these two young men innocent though they were, who can tell when as a result of the acts of these young hoodlums, might create a riot and many innocent citizens become seriously involved. It is no time for hot heads, but a time for serious thought and consideration, nip this thing in the bud, keep your boys off the Streets, let 12th St. be a safe Street not only to live on but to walk on.

SAN DIEGO
Thursday evening, Capt. R. C. Plenty, Lieut. McCarter and myself had an occasion to be walking West on E Street, passed a squad of Uncle Sam's uncivilized, unpatriotic, would be soldiers, when one made the remark, "I guess not!" meaning that he would not salute the two Officers, because they were Negroes. We mad no response as there are times when we must think, but be silent in actions.
This world has so many degenerates strolling the streets of liberty and mingling with the progressives that the Black man feels that there is no hope for him to be a recognized citizen. Have patience, my dear brother, the day is not far off when you will be one of the ruling races of this world.
"Lay low and saw wood;" stop radding and telling your business to the white race.
The first time the San Diego colored Home Guards had an opportunity to present themselves before the public was the evening of November 15, which was the greatest Street Carnival that has ever been held in San Diego.
Everyone of the men were in uniform. The public applauded them more than any of the Regulars, because of their skillful military movements.
Capt. Plenty led the Company with the assistance of Dr. A. L. Brown. Boy Scout Master; Lieut. Frank A. McCarter; Lieut. I. Wooden and Sgt. Mose Davis. Drill Master of the Company.
The enthusiastic compliments that the Company has received since the parade from some of the brainy people of this town, gave me the inspiration to continue. Bring every available Afro-American man into the Company, each and every comrade should have the same determination. Sargeant Mose Davis was appointed Drill Master of the Company by Capt. Plenty. Knowing of his past experience at Camp Grant in military training, we are sure that he will make the San Diego Company the pride of California.
Men! attend the drills regularly, so as to encourage the members that are attending, to continue, and the future will reap you abundance.
The meeting nights are Mondays for Commissioned and non-commissioned officers; and Thursdays for all at 8 p.m., Corner 8th and I St.
Mr. Brown, editor of Union, gave the Company a very encouraging address which I am sure the men will be greatly benefitted by. He said, "The Colored Home Guards were better drilled than the white Home Guards at the Park."
Be of Good Cheer.
There never was a day so long
It did not have an end;
There never was a man so poor
He did not have a friend;
And when the long day finds an
end
It brings the time of rest.
And he who has one steadfast
friend
Should count himself as blest.
So let's not be discouraged,
friend.
When shadows cross our way.
Of Trust and Hope I've some to
lend:
So borrow from me, pray.
Good friends are we, therefore not poor,
Though worldly wealth we lack;
Behold the sun shines forth at last
And drives the dark clouds back.
—EBEN E. REXFORD.

Pasadena To Have Big Christmas
Peace Celebrotin.
An Elaborate Peace Jubilee To Portray Every Christmas From the Pilgrims To 1918. Negroes To Take Prominent Part On Program.
Pilgrins are under way for a great Christmas Peace Celebration in Pasadena probably at Tournament Park with realistic portrayal of every Peace Christmas since the Pilgrims.
GAL. TWEL.
Mr. J. D.
Overr were and Mrs. Wn.
After live patient waiting on the chat but for the l unitarily remoted precaution
The part to be played by the Negroes will be the Christmas of 1862. It will be celebrated as did our Fathers and Mothers at that memorable time when they celebrated the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Lincoln, September 22, 1862 and effective January 1, 1863. This part of the program will be under the direction of the Negro women' Progressive Association of which the Rev. Mrs. Palmer is the very efficient President. Capt. Wm. Reynolds has been selected to organize and drill a great Chorus to sing the Melodies and Folk songs of that day and arrange a full program for the occasion with Uncle Ned nad his Banjo Old Black Joe and everything that made up that Christmas celebration in 1862.
The full plans will be published as they develop. The whole affair is under the direction of the Womens' Committee of the National Council of Defense of Pasadena, (White) of which the Negro Womens' Progressive Association is a member. The grand finale will be the celebration of the 1918 Peace and it will be a fitting demonstration of the closing of the greatest war that the world has ever known. The Halle-lu-jah Chorus composing all the people, colored and white will participate with the great English director in charge of the Chorus.
Two Young Pasadena Matrons Die The Same Day.
Mrs. Lucille Griffin Rucker, the youngest daughter of Mr. James Griffin, who now resides in San Diego, died Monday, November 18th in Los Angeles with influenza that developed into Pneumonia. The deceased was a bride of about a month and took sick pery soon after being married which resulted in her death.
The funeral was held from the Reynolds & Van Nuys Undertaking Parlors on Worcestor Ave., with the Rev. R. D. Arline and Rev. W. H. Dickerson officiating.
She leaves behind a father; three sisters; two brothers; a large number of uncles, aunts and cousins, and a host of friends.
Mrs. Flossie Gibson died at her home on Grove Street, Monday, November 18th, from tuberculosis, developed from the influenza. She has been sick for some little time and her mother and friends were in hopes of her final recovery; but she suffered a relapse early in the week and passed away on Monday of this week.
The funeral was held from the home on Grove Street, with Rev. W. H. Tillman officiating and was buried in the Moutain View Cemetary.
Mrs. Webber of Los Angeles was the dinner guest of Mrs. L. H. Ford on Sunday.
IN THANKSGIVING
Great Master of our all, accept this day
The spoken thanks of those who through
have bent in silent gratefulness they were
To normal tasks of life, freed of all fear
We thank thee for the peace that has been done
That peace of soul which set in solid rock
Of love and understanding, defied the powers
Of ignorance and hate; withstood war's shock.
We thank thee for the sterling heart that moved
Through storming seas our coursing ship of state
That heart which to a maddened world has proved
Columbia's word: "Only the right is great"
For wealth to give, for will and power to do,
For friends, new made and old; for hopes that live—
For these and more, rejoicingly to you
From chastened, humble hearts, all praise we give.
PAGE EIGHT
Mr. J. D. Croves and Mrs. Alice
Overr were dinner guests of Capt.
and Mrs. Wm. Reynolds on Sunday.
After five weeks or loss of impatient waiting the ban was finally lifted on the churches in Pasadena and but for the larger churches who voluntarily remained closed as an added precaution against the spreading of the "Fla." the smaller churches held services on Saturday morning and evening.
The people generally availed themselves of the long delayed opportunity to assemble at the various church. All the services were in the nature of thanksgiving.
At the Friendship Baptist Church, beginning at 9:30 a.m. as usual the Sunday School started off as smooth as ever with a normal attendance except in the Primary Department, a slight falling off was noted, as some of the parents were just a little bit timid as yet about sending out the little folks. Bro A. H. Evans, the Historian, gave a splendid review of all the lessons that had passed during the closing of the church, and a song was interspersed between each lesson, making a very helpful and joyful occasion.
Mrs. Webber, President of the W. H. and F. M. State Convention, Miss Ellen Prowd, Mr. John Prowd, and Mr. J. D. Groves all of the Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles were visitors, also Mr. and Mrs. Highbaugh of the New Hope Baptist Church of Los Angeles. They remained over to the morning services and enjoyed the service throughout.
At 10:00 a.m. Rev W. H. Fillman, the pastor, brought a wonderful message from the Easelah. It was Glad When they said and asked Let us Do
into his House of the Lord. The singing by the Choir was very much enjoyed by the visitors. The Rev. R. D. Arline was a visit at the morning service and assisted the pastor in opening by reading and prayer. Another visitor was the Rev. Brooks of Georgia who also offered prayer. The announcement that nearly $250 was collected by the Officers during the time that the Church was closed was a very pleasant hit of intelligence.
attended and the cantass of the topic
"How Can We make democracy Safe for the World through the Country Church," being an up-to-the-minute topic, was discussed with much spirit by the instructors of each division. Short talks were made by Mrs. Webber, Miss Prowd, Mr. John Prowd and the Rev. H. D. Prowd, pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles who was an additional visitor at the evening service and preached an inspiring sermon at the 7:30 p. m. worship, taking for his subject. "What Shall I Render unto the Lord for His Benefits?"
Mr. and Mrs. Highbaugh of Los Angeles were dinner guests of Mrs. Alice Litton of Cypress Avenue Sunday. Mrs. Litton is Mrs. Highbaugh's aunt.
City News The whole family of Mr. J. A. Bensely of 861 Cypress Avenue has been sick with influenza, but are all getting better now and on the way to recovery.

Your Greatest Opportunity
What the success of the Square Deal Gas & Oil Co. means to the Negro of this Country
Since this company has succeeded in bringing in Real Oil Wells with a gold production, and since it will be soon paying its stockholders a handsome dividend, it marks a new epoch in the financial history of the Negro of this country. It proves to the world that the Black Man is fully able, without the leadership and assistance of the White Man, to finance and operate big business enterprises the same as anyone else. We have a few more shares of this wonderful opportunity left, and it becomes your duty and the duty of every Race-loving Negro to do his bit in supporting and maintaining such ultimate Negro enterprises. It must be remembered, though, that we are not soliciting your support merely because you are a Black Man and because our company is a Negro concern, but because we are here offering you the same great opportunity that has heretofore been ofered principally to the White Man. When our company begins paying dividends, which will be in the near future, it will mean prosperity and happiness throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America to each and everyone of our true, loyal and Race-loving stockholders. It will mean better homes for them; it will mean better education for their little ones; it will mean that broader avenues of business have opened for the Negroes, and lastly, it will mean that the contributions to the churches will be larger, thus enabling them to extend forward the work of God. This may brethren, is what the success of the Square Deal Oil & Gas Company means to our Race. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why we are sincerely requesting you to buy, and encourage your friends to buy, every share of Square Deal stock that you can possibly get, while you can buy it at $2.00 per share, as we have only a few more shares left. In conclusion, I hope that you will be true to your God, true to your country, true to yourself, and true to your race by buying as much as you can of this wonderful opportunity.
