THE LINCOLN HALF CENTURY EXPOSITION MADE HISTORY
THE LINCOLN HALF CENTURY EXPOSITION MADE HISTORY
To the Public: The Illinois Half Century Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee scored a new record along exposition lines. It opened its doors with upwards of $50,000 to its credit and closed with profitable balance to its credit. It is unfortunate that disagreement over the nominees and their employees should occur during the conduct, of the celebration. The absurd charge made against the secretary was a lie and a libel, and even the one member of the commission who gave utterance to the statement positively denies the same. At a proper time the secretary will be known. Thomas Wallace *Swain*, secretary. Chicago, IL, September 23, 1915.

CHICAGO BUSINESS MAN VISITS EAST

J. W. Rose, Life Long Friend and New York Business Man, Counterfeit All "George's" Money When He Landed in New York, and Says Taxis and Other Moving Tools Took on New Life—Read For Yourself.
New York City is in a very hospital and generous moods in these days according to the report brought to Chicago by the business man, George Golus. A professional businessman, George Golus, Defender reported happen to drop in on the street, a few days since and found him a splendid humor and brimful of his experiences. He offered the experience to the officer in speaking of his trip he had to say to: "I was prompted to visit the health and secondly to visit an old friend in the person of James Rose, whom I have known from early manhood. I have known him as inspirational and business ingenuity that I have attained whatever little success has come to me."
Your reporter inquired of Mr. Golins as to what part the colored woman was in the race and energy of the city, in the reg. I reg. and any much for New York as can be said for much of New York can be said for connection. However, there is one thing that can be said, in connection with their progress and advancement, that race suicide does not seem to be as prevalent there as in the city. In dressmaking, manicuring and other special women's business lines the New York colored women seem to be the hotbed of business, pressed with the businesslike manner in which the Star Hand Laundry is being operated, Miss Ida Ostend and Mr. Williams.
When asked of his other travel other than Philadelphia, I was in Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Buffalo. My stay was brief in Philadelphia that I only had the time to see the city. I went to a park. However, from my brief observation, Philadelphia - seemed to be living in the city - was not a course, so I know that the only thing open there on Sundays is their churches. But Atlantic City is indeed the pleasure of the city, and I have with my visit on the Board Walk. I can be truthfully said that it is the information I meet there the representatives of every race. I spent much time at Fitzgerald's, which is one of the show places of Attica. I went to the hotel. The colored business man seems to be holding his own there. In Buffalo our old town, Bob Thomas, seems to be the most interesting world. I visited Niagara Falls, of course, was a revelation and a wonder to me, and must be any one on their first

KICKI
THE BAPTIST
SPLIT MADE PLAIN
It May Call for Criticism, but Those Living in Glass Houses Should Not Throw Stones.
(Special to Chicago Defender.)
(By Rev. G. W. Woodhey.)
San Diego, Cal., Oct. 1—Editor Chris Chico Defender: To many people the splitting of the national Baptist convention came like thunder from a clear sky, while the better informed it was not altogether unexpected. I have been for a long time a reader of your paper, getting it from the news stands and now from your agent in this city, through the dailies, but trouble through the dailies, but loudly waiting for the account in the Defender. The split is, of course, very much to be regretted. Although a preacher of the Baptist denomination, it has never been my privilege to attend a meeting of that body, having at the times of their meetings usually otherwise engaged. Some of my friend and colleague has made the race look had when compared with great white gatherings assembled for deliberative purposes. But among our white Baptist brethren we have the Northern and Southern Baptist conventions caused by a split over slavery, while in 1844 the Methodists split about the same thing, and other denominations followed suit. The race at stake—something to split about. So both the anti-slavery and pro-slavery elements in the churches thought at the time. And while I do not know enough of the fact to take in the national convention to take a decided stand either way, yet I am sure that each side thought that a great deal they think they need. This others may difference of opinion. Many thought the slavery question was not sufficient reason for a division. Twenty-five years or more, working exclusively among white people, have taught me that they are just as apt to do what has been done by the Baptist convention. During my work among the whites I national nominating conventions in which but a few exceptions all were white except myself. And it would be hard for any gathering to equal the confusion we had at some of them. For example in the national Prohibition convention at Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1896, at which there were 1,000 delegates, we had a "srap" that hasted all day, the splitting of a night and 338 of the usual confusion, and organized a "rump" convention and put up an opposition ticket. Every political party in the nation split that year.
If the reports of the Associated Press are worth anything the last national Republican convention, held in Chicago, was a hummer for confusion and disorder. If I mistake not, the national teachers' convention—hold, I believe, that we should disgraceful mob that not accord even a lady a hearing. Of course I would be glad to see our people do better than the white man, and thus set him an example; but to expect it is useless, as we read the same books, and that the only real difference between is the skin. It may be contended that some of these examples I have given are political rather than religious. But remember that the delegates at each are largely the same men and women. We should not suppose that we will be able to deal with what What else is the devil for? There is, however, one good thing about it, and that is that they did not split upon a question of doctrine. And as such bodies among Baptists have no ecclesiastical authority they cannot do any real injury to the local churches. I agree with the Defender that it will be difficult for the criticism to be met only by showing that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones, and that it is hardly fair to expect our people to be any better than those who have gone before and set us the example. I believe, however, that the whole truth should be gathered to be given to the public at large may know the truth. Christ said: "We shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

"PROTEST" PARADE AMPLY JUSTIFIED
The End Has Not Come—Citizens Intend to Continue Their Protests Until the Picture Play Is Out of the State.
Philadelphia, Pa. Oct. 1. —The citizens are not satisfied to have "The Birth of a Nation" shown here in peace. The litigation over the infamous production is far from its finish. Able lawyers are studying the situation from new angles and it is believed some valid cause can be asserted to that will put an end to the enactment of the Negro and hardens the hearts of his erstwhile friends against the race. Philadelphia's citizens are usually lawmaking, but this misleading spectacle is trying their patience to the breaking point. * * Mrs. Josephine D. Heard, wife of Bishop W. H. Heard, will spend some time in Atlantic City, Miss. with the Salem Harrison, her niece, has been looking after the welfare of "Gregstone" in her absence. Mrs. Heard is considering a proposition to go on a brief lecture this fall and to give readings from her long list of poetical productions. Mr. R. W. Thompson, the national correspondent, has been here as the director of Mr. Salem Tutt Whitney, 610 North thirty-ninth street. He has been shown many social courtesies by his host of friends here, and was especially entertained at a "stag dinner" given at the Roadside by that prince of Bonfides, Mr. Al S. Jones, whose name is a household word and synonym for the city. Mr. Thompson and party were tendered a box at the Standard Theater by manager John T. Gibson, the attraction being Irvin C. Miller's "Mr. Ragtime." Mr. Thompson by invitation of Producer Whitney, Tutt and of Producer Twelve, received rehearsals of the new show and announced the new show offered by these talented comedy constructors to be the best that has been sent out in the name of the race since "Abyssinia" and "The Red Moon." Before coming to the Red Moon, Thompson attended the sessions of "The Processed several rehearsals of the New York League in Boston and spent some time in York City. * * Mr. Sheridan Z. Davis, city of Indianapolis, Ind. is conducting a prosperous school of music here. * * Rev. P. Wallace is putting up a fine race for the bishopric of the A. M. E. Zion Church. In Boston and spent some time in New York streets. * * A member of the board of education is wanted. * * South street, the great thoroughfare for our citizens, is being resurfaced. More Afro-Americans in business should have places on this much-traveled street. The Jews are reaping a profit from the business and their patronage. * * There is talk of rending Hon. George H. White to congress from the district of which the Seventh Ward is the backbone. In this district the Afro-American voters easily hold the balance of power and they could work wonders for the city. The O. V. Catto Lodge of Elks, with headquarters at its South street home, is already preparing to give the antered herd of the nation a warm reception when it comes next August. The shibboleth is to give Grand Exalted Ruler Nutter a banner administration this year, and then to give man who stands closest to him and to the best interests of the order—Mr. George E. Bates of Newark, N. J., now serving most capably as grand secretary.

DUNBAR LITERARY SOCIETY HONORS "THE OLD PUEBLO"
一
(By Robert M. Lawson).
Tuscon, Ariz. Oct. 1—Tuscon, the bestlust, wealthiest and most prestigious city in Arizona, is at last forging a new social events, excellent weather and a general spirit of unity. On last Thursday evening the ladies of the Baptist Church gave a dainty dinner in the interests of the pastor, which was well patronized, and the ladies in charge proved to be masters of the culinary arts. On last Friday the Dunbar Church rendered a special program which would have done credit to a city three time the size of "The Old Pueblo." There were a number of highly entertaining and creditable features upon the program, the most prominent being the recitations of Mrs. Carrie Lewis recited a number of poems from Dunbar and other famous poets; also went through a number of dramatic poses, and all who were so fortunate as to witness her performance pronounce her to be an artist of very few equals. Other numbers of merit on the program were the instrumental music of bush, Ohio, and the humorous paper by Mrs. Lizzie Graves. Mrs. Johnson is indeed an artist at the community and one whose talent we are justly proud. Mrs. Graves is perfectly at home when it comes to handling the musical instruments of bush, Ohio, and the humorous paper of the Baptist Church was highly appreciated and was to the point. His subject, "Unity," was appropriate to the occasion, and the manner in which it was delivered certainly crowned the speaker with laurels. Rev. Humphrey through his clever and humorous illustrations always mumbled when he says good bye. * **Mr. Robert Charles returned to the city a few days ago to visit her mother, Mrs. J. W. Raven. * **Professor C. C. Simmons, principal of the Simmons school, returned last Wednesday morning to resume his duties for the museum, which has sold his restaurant in the Heidel Hotel and in the future will devote his entire attention to his mining inter-

On a Chilly Fall Day
Some folks tune up the Big Furnace — then shiver and wait for an hour or more, while the said furnace eats two dollars' worth of coal and generates ten times the amount of heat required.
Other folks—wise and thrifty—let the furnace sleep and rely on Little Gas Heaters until real winter comes along. A twist of the wrist turns a gas-heater fire on or off—takes but a few minutes to make the dampest room warm and cosy at a fuel cost of pennies instead of dollars.

THEATRICAL REVIEW
‘Bert Coleman, the whistler, gave a
pleasing demonstration of hin ablilty

Kinney, Rush and Robertson in. a.
musle store novelty were good, td
Connte and Lee wore two excellent
vocalists. ‘The Billy King company
seored Its usual success in a 20-min-
tute musical comedy called “Southern
Home.” ‘Taken up one side and down
the other, this was one of the best
bills seu’ here for some time.
‘The Menoaran:
‘The acts working here this week
tare all above the average, and the bit
isa whang from start to finish. Plenty
of variety ts offerod, and it would be
hard to choose between the three
ucts working us to popularity. Sell
man and Selman, Brown and DeMont,
and Connors and Mann, all on one bill,
make a show of quality.
New Monogram,
Johnny Woods and Little Henry
with the Wooden ean are the head-
ner here this weok, and return with
great popularity. ‘The entire program
fs a erackorjack and Includes Jo-
sephine and ‘Tobias, the well-known
songsters; the new team of Gear and
Delaney, who are good, and Harper

AMONG THE MOVIES.
‘ea Pieieti:
‘The Pink Permit features which we

The Lincotn.
With the advent of cooler wenthor a
steady increase in the attendance Is
noticeable, and the offerings have
been of a clasay sort during the cur.
Tent week. We had “Billie Richfo" in
a two-part comedy on Monday, along
with “Phe Broken Coln,” and business
was big.
The Washington.
‘The “Diamond from the Sky" and
“The Broken Coin,” our two serials,
oth drow well during the present
‘week, and the things offered here
‘would be lard to beat. Business has
deen good.
The States,
Several of the big special features
shown here during the current week
taxed our house to capacity, ‘Tho
multireel offerings are proving very
popular, and business las boon as
good as could be desired. “"Noal of
‘the Navy” continues to draw well, and
the patrons seem to enjoy the serial
even more than they did Elaine.
“ee eee
‘The improvement ‘jn the offerings
and the general appearance here Is
the wonder of the district, and tho
inerease in attendance testifies to the
quality of the bookings, It fs almost
B nightly occurrence to have to “hold
‘thom out,” and the patrons are’at last
awakeninig to the fact that they can
seo a real show without going a mile
from home. The Pink Permit specials

THE HIGH-BROWN
We have opened “The High-Brown” display room No. 5, at 3519
Skate Street, for the purpose of showing you the ORIGINAL
HIGH-BROWN FACE POWDER
as there are many imitations on the market sold under such names as
“Brown Face Powder,” “Brown Skin,” and similar names.
HIGH-BROWN FACE POWDER
was originated by us—we have the name copyrighted in the United
States Patent Office, and it is the first and only face powder ever made
especially for colored people.
Only first class articles are imitated—the very fact that so many imi-
tate our articles is proof in itself that ours is of a superior quality,
When you buy’a face powder for'a “High-Brown” that has not the
mame Overton-Hygienic on it, you have been imposed upon; for you have
-bought an’ imitation, which is inferior to our original “High-Brown,”
See that our name is on every ‘box you buy. ~ *
