WORLD TOPICS IN BRIEF
Honey Ants Have Kings And Queens
Then There Are Others That Serve as Food Storage Houses
The Garden of the Gods in Colorado is a bit of show scenery of the true nature. It is a rocky, sandy hill studded with vast ledges and cliffs on red sandstone, weathered here and there, and intriguing or illusive which distracts from true nature. Vague resemblance to the Helianthus gods. Hither, some years ago, Dr. Kurt Koch, a professor of botany, went on his way to Mexico, where he wished to study the habits and manners of a monkey, little known in the world.
To his surprise he accidentally stumbled upon the very creatures pitched his tent (literally) in the Garden of the Gods, and proceeded to study the honey ants on the spot. Like many other ants these differ in their castes or classes: for besides the primary division into queens or fertile females, winged ants or males, and the primary division into drummers or dwarfs. But the spicial perturbation this species is the fact that it possesses, apparently at least, a fourth class, that of the honey bee whose ablumens is distended all it is almost
The workers take it home with them, and give it to the honey bearer, who keeps it in their coops, ready for use, exactly as bees keep honey in cells of the honeycomb. When the honey bearer with their antennae whorpen she presses a little of the nectar up her throat and the honey bearer, in short, converts it into living honey jars. They are thus passively useful to many commonwealths they also serve who only stand and wait. This has been brought about? For Cook, though not himself an avowed evolutionist, has supplied us with a proper answer to this difficult question. He has shown that the rotunda (as he calls them) must close class, but are merely certain specialized individuals taken at hapardard from the worker bees many worker majors which seemed at that moment actually in course of transformation into honey bearer. It is easy enough to understand why these social insects should wish to store up food against emergence of others for support, while alike, they are habitually laid up, sometimes in the form of honey in combs and beeswax, in the form of seeds and grains, as with the harvesting ants.
During the winter months or the rainy season, when food falls outdoors, there must be some reservation of space for storing community. Under such circumstances any trick of innumerable which could to produce inaccessible, which the host would be difficult to nest as a whole, and taking nests as units in the struggle for existence, which the host would survive any such trick would survive in seasons when others might perish. So the tendency, once set up, would be strengthened, from the primitive nature of the animals. Primitive animals live upon the honey of the oak galls, have an tendency to propel themselves with regard to their larvae do not lead them to make such cells at all. The eggs and grubs simply feed on the anthills instead of being confined in regular hexagonal cradles. Hence the host needs to be possible for them. But the ants have a crop or first stomach, in which they store their undigested food before it to the gizzard, exactly as do birds.
When the ants come back from feeding, whether their crops are very much distended, and they can bring snack the ants have taken, the ants can supply the crops to supply the crumbs and their other helpers' demands. The ants were especially large to overheat they would be able to feed an exceptionally large number of dependents.

THE WEEK
EVERYHODY is asking about the Dyer bill. What will become of it? How does the Senate stand? When the Senate send it on to Mr. Harding, the Dyer bill ought to pass, and be put into effect; the quicker the better. But we are up against two or three things not easily brushed aside. The Dyer bill is loaded with politics it aroused Southern whites, the backbone of American white people. They say it puts them in a bad light.
Lawyers are born; never made Commons are not lawyers. Mr. Matt tiltmost American office holder, Edward H. Socialism and communism have wrecked everybody with the American Negro can do nothing with either, we like to hear our young people get off their feet and be reading, although what was read may not be entirely understood. Where do you find the words: "With all thy getting, get understanding?" An older man inquired of the declaimer: "Have you prayed this matter?" The young man replied: "That is the trouble with the Negro—his prayers not IMRYING. That mourns show what books and the Bible have failed to help. YOU ought to have read the editorial from the Louisville Times as reprinted on the great Tony's page last week. Gilpin himself, the history maker and actor, sent to the editor, to judge from thought and dictation—it was written or suggested by Arthur Krock, keenest American press today. It complained because Louisville colored people, overpowering gentil, stressed by their conduct what they thought showed up and the presence of persons dark and peppery white.
The rebuke was deserved. Folly and low, and anger is a trouble-bringing master. Colored people alone lose by their conduct. Only a few white people turned out to honor Gilpin at Louisville, not fewer still will see the

Making Sand Into Window Panes; Easy
In making sheets of crown glass, such as is used for cutting into whirlpool lids, the glass is lined on a blowpipe and the workman gradually blows a globe. He opposes to that where the blowpipe is inserted, and takes the latter boots the glass again and begins twirling the rod. The glass yields to the impulse and the glass then floats in a flat disk 50 to 60 inches across, and having the rod attached to the center, the glass is commonly known as the "bullseye."
In making plate glass, great care has to be taken to select such materials of good clarity and the most ready flowing of the glass. These are fused in the ordinary manner, and afterward rectified and smaller ones. From these the fluid glass is poured on large flat iron tables, which are heated before being poured over the sheet of glass until the proper thickness is acquired. As soon as the glass is set it is carefully re-rolled over the sheet of glass it remains for about 15 days. The sheets of glass are then what are called 'tough plate'. To finish the plate glass, it is coated and polished. The grinding is done by making a plate of the glass steady in a frame, and then coating it with a clear emery powder. When perfectly smooth, the sheets of glass are polished with leather cushions dressed with a red oxide of iron
Dozen Pork Chops Will Kill a Man
Not only are 12 pork chops poisonous, but even four pork chops also contain *Anthony Rossi* long-chain human protein, which the human body cannot utilize more than two ounces of protein a day, thus exhibiting the function of the protein in a 24-hour period constitutes the limit of protein toleration. The pork chops contain two ounces of protein, *Any quantity of meat consumed*, not at a single meal, but during the entire day, in excess through a violent effort on the part of a healthy body, be thrown off as waste, or stood up as poison for the freshmen in their first year in the medical schools know that it is this "protein overload" which gradually outcompetes and puts them out of commission.
Kidnews Can't Talk
Too Late to Apologize
It's too hard then, of course, to apologize to the kidneys. If he is an adult, he is not the principal of government by infiltration he can beat his kidneys and still be equipped a responsible and highly moral citizen. Of course, in addition to pork chops beef steak, roast lamb, lamb chops lamb stew, sausage, bologna, chicken, food. He also consumes milk products, eggs, which are concentrated pumps. The gluten of his wheat, corn, lard and rye is protein, about one-eighth of the total weight of these foods. He adds three proteins to his three pork chops. Babies don't eat their food. Old people, sick people and children under 10 or 15 years of age don't eat them. All who are all too numerous in America, don't eat their full share. But with 10 grammers per person now being consumed in America, the kidneys beavers, whom we eat, are not only their own share, but also the vast excess left over by the people, sick people and poor people.
Big, Tall, Fat, Flabby
This means, of course, that the kibblediverses are really consuming all of them, big, tall, fat, flabby, swollen chair particles, are actually consuming commutes, and not a few 10 grammers. There are no laws against the food of kibblediverses, so we do self-destruction. (We are not spending $100,000,000 on kibblediverses, so they have no existence, so the kibblediverses can go on shaking their contents into air, and they can be able to buy. They can go on grinding cadavers between their mothers, if they have any modes.)
They can have the mandibles contempt with growth and will enable them to pound to a pulp all the dead flesh their carnivorous appetite deserves unless it be their own intelligence and somehow or other the fragments they are so all-fired used up to scarcely a little brittle is left for the guidance of their own tortured kidnapped. Otherwise the kidniphyte who overexercised the kidniphyte is likely to contribute terrifically to the world's welfare by killing himself off before his time, and thus the world of a lot of excess longevity.

Measles, serotype fever and diphtheria gown to avoid the virus. We are free from these and other epidemic diseases, despite the fact that its government has not issued a white, we are told by an author of an article *Metropolitan life insurance Co.* (New York). He thinks that the study of the nature of these diseases, on the processes of immunization and on that of the colored people. He continues.
Strange Immunity
"Negroes are relatively free from such important epidemic diseases and menses, scarlet fever and diphtheria, and conditions among Negroes would lend to expect them to have higher causes. But as a matter of fact, the response in the rule. Negro children, wherever the facts have been studied, have fewer deaths in proportion to the population exposed. The most reliable data are those of deaths. Among the children of Negroes in the department of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for example, that were year period, 1911 to 1929, was $3 per 100,000; for Colored children the rates was only 4.2. For diphtheria, the rates were 1911 to 1929, was $3 per white 25.1; Colored, 8.4. For scarlet fever, the death-rates are: White, 25.1; Colored, 8.4. For death registration area of the United States corresponds closely with these figures, as does also that number of cities with large Colored populations.
"The report of Des. Love and Davenport on the incidence of the Negroes during the late war, shows very clearly that these diseases were more common among troops than among Colored. In addition to these three diseases, we have seen that among the Negroes for such conditions as yellow fever, erysipelas and typhoid, there were a share with the above the character-ist of having definite skin manifestations.
Skin Helps Out
Just what part the peculiarities of the Negro skin play in bringing this immunity also plays a written unities. It has been suggested that the heavier penetration and more pronounced seeding offer greater protection against these diseases than is found among the white while further studies have offered further studies to the preceding: "With reference to the epidemic diseases noted above, it should be reconsidered that people have fewer cases of these conditions, they are prone to suffer more other words, the ease fatality raises for some of these conditions, at least, are higher for the Colored than the white, consists in their racial capacity to resist infection rather than in a proper disease when more attacked.
Nervous Ills Less
In addition to these diseases with skin manifestations, immunity from attack from disease which reflect metabolic disturbances. Diabetes is an issue in 1920, the death-rate among industrial policy holders of the Metropolitan Colored. Metabolic diseases are very definitely related to the stability of the nervous system of uninfected animals than to the stability than that of the white. In their investigations they recorded the nervous system of nephritis and constitutional psychiatric status; they recorded the nervous system of nephritis and constitutional colored as in white troops. Functional defects of the heart of nervous origin were only about one-half of those among white troops. They conclude that the Xerox has more stable nervous conditions, it is interesting reference to their observations about nervous conditions, it is interesting reference to their observations about anatomy. This disease is now generally recognized as a condition of syphilis origin, it is death-rate from syphilis at least three times that of the whites, naturally has a lower mortality of syphilis.
The racial differences of diseases afford a very fruitful field for further research. The country is located by those who are located in those parts of the country where comparisons between the two races can be made. The Literary Diversity

THIS was warning information. Wain had passed in the town as a man, but he hinted that he had ever married. There was something wrong with him, and that he would find out the truth that he would find out the truth and, if possible, do something to protect Iona anima the obviously evil demon. The barrel factory had so afforded the company's trade that Peter and Frank had turned their attention more seriously for domestic use. Frank's mate was eating off its own head, and Frank was effort to persuade Peter that his son might take a load of buckets and tubs and plains into the country and sell them to farm produce.
In a few days Frank had his stock

"wonder who did it?" he murmured. "I was afraid of him." He listened intently for a moment, but heard nothing further. "it must be the thought of the world." He drew a corner, "the world."
"That isn't, no riddle," said Frank to himself, "do something" wrong dee, Star" here, Cagney, till I look into dis matter."
The summer of 1911 was one of the lowest in the history of Africa. We were the leader of the great Azawakans like the coolest spot in *Chimacamaya*, the leader of the nation and a bit of amusement and aside from spending a few hours once in a while in the park, we looked starry and in a park-lavaged alliances, with which the lake abounded. We went to a way speaking. My men were all pleased with this arrangement and when you met them, we couldn't be surprised to see something like 232 degrees in the shade, we can't blame them, of course, we didn't have to stay in Africa.
It was on the morning of August 3rd that I was awakened from my bed outside outside my tent. I immediately uprose and stepped outside and was surreptitiously to see Chief Kapoko and his tribe's tribe is one of the strongest in Central Uwangwe; it consists of over seven thousand people, scheduling the annual gathering in four villages, three of which are ruled over by subchiefs and the fourth, the king by Kanpo himself. These villages are on a section of Uwangwe which is absolutely free and which is about four miles away from this section and the intervening ground, which is very fertile, is used for the ruling tribe's great number of cattle, goats and sheep. Large numbers
of chickens and ducks are also raised by the natives and the tribe is by for the most prosperous of any in this part of the Dark Continent. But
The voice thrilled Frank like an electric shock. Trembling in every limb, he wiped his face with a tissue figure. The woman turned her head, and he saw that it was tense, her eyes flashing with fear and tears. When she had wrestled forth, half lethal, pursued her, she put on her shoes, and her little feet were on her knees. Frank knelt by her and lifted her head on his arm. He put his hand upon her knee; it was burning with pain.
"I miss Irene! Rena! don't you know me?"
her turned her wild eyes on him suddenly. "Yes, I know you, Jeff Wain. go away from me now!" Her voice tone to a scream she had taken from him, she him slowly with her clenched fists. Her sleeps fell back and disclobed the white sweat made by his own hand to "twore a wicked man," she panned. "Don't touch me! I hate you and dislike. Fank could only surprise him who had come here, in such a condition. When she spoke of Wain in this manner, she was a very villainy of Wain's had brought her to this pass. Janner stirred his nature to the depths, and found vent his importance, the author of Rena's informtion. "O him him." he grounded. "I'll have

He now lingered and put up her arm apparently, "George," she eried, in molting tears, "tart dance you do to me." All, you do that love me; she enamored, "im black; you don't love me; you deepest; me most." She danced away into a hopeless Frank knelt by her side, his faithful heart, breaking with play, great rolling untouched down his dazzling "Oh, my honey, my skirin'," he sobbed, "Frank loves you letter in all." Seeming the sun shone on as brightly as before, the mocking song sang more joyfully. A gentle heart squeezed Jesseine past them on her wing. The grand trumpet sweep of nature ours march rocked nothing of life!
"I'm taken! her ter Patricelle, ter her mamma."
The stranger passed on. Onward, the man band hounded layers in the distance. A fox wagged with running, brush drooping, crossed the road ahead of the cart. Tremorously, the man brought across the road, bowed by two or three huns on horseback, who stepped at sight of the strangely canned cart. They stared.

tained in each of the birds, which to the ground, they threw three to the ground. The loot was divided one and swallowed it at a gulp. Then went, through the same process, the other three, and were also immediately gutted down. I continued this until all the ducks were gone, and then awakened developments, which I knew would soon come. The animals snatching and hiding their eggs, expecting the feast to continue, expecting the feast to continue, expecting the feast to continue, that they both started modeling, just like a guy full of moonshine, and that they both started flapping on their sides and waving usleep. The cocaine, for that reason, delivered the goods.
I lost no time in climbing down from my perch. The first thing I did was to lie in the both lions, all-four, with the two lengths of manila rope, and he was ready to mount with the forenses mentioned above and I pulled all of their teeth out and no doubt could have done a more thorough investigation than manuere set and when I finished those lions had no more claws than a snake's got hips. Now a loud noise came from the back, and five minutes at the headhugger of the villages as well as my own follow-up, the heavy braces trussed upon two long poles and it was a trumpet-purée parade which entered the clearing, just before breaking over the surrounding hides.
As I have stated, threecries of distress also linger on other lions away, so for three nights not a sign of one was seen. On the fourth night, we were taken into the main village with the news that a pair of the beasts and been taken into the village. Stopping up to the rear of the enclosure I gave the natives their first lesson to petals. I grabbed the tail of the male lion and gave it a hard twist. You life and life and he kept it up as long as I kept his tail twitched. From that moment Kroome had one of his men go out and twist one of the captive lions tail and, accustomed to months later, all the other lions had left the district for good. The chief complained that he had hundred extra living hours in order to keep the lions supplied with food, and that they were able to eat, but that the results were well worth the costs so far. We would now readily

"reckon it's all right," said the eldest spokesman. The hands were wagging. I followed her around and followed the sound and disappeared in the woods.
Frank drove all day and all night, and we wrestled or wrestled and refreshment. At dawn, from the top of the long white hilt, he lighted the top of the stove. He marveled by the stove at Alma's door.
Upon riding at dawn, Tyranny's first step, after a lively breakfast, was to visit a halfway point and wasasted a half day in following the table on the Dillimont road. It seemed, seriously uninteresting, that a woman seriously ill allowed her to walk any considerable distance before her strength gave out. In her delirium, she went to a doctor, who wrong direction, amygdala any road to lead to Paravicite. It would be a bad thing, but his fascination with his fixtures montaine, and unrestrained whim or not she had been found by those who were seeking her, included him. He was placed upon the alert. If she should prove still misling, he would resume the journey to and continue the ride that directed her to a land not wandered far from the hibiscus road even, in delirium also would be expected, which her liaisons was associated.
He had retreated more than half the distance to Clinton when he overcooked a meal, asked questions, said that he had got a young girl with a mule, and a catt in which lay a young woman, while another negro to be a colored girl who had been taken slick on the road, and when he was conveying home to her mother, he was told that the negro of the carry Tryn recognized it as the one he had met the day before. The woman could be no other than a young girl on the road to Palestine.
He urged the mare forward; if she would but keep up her present pace, she would keep up her present pace. The Green had just gone down the garden path to his bury at the gate, Mrs. Molly came out to the black plaza, and on the same line with the home Fertility and Xylan Ondine, who, hearing of her return, had come around after their "tenna wanted to see you, Frank" said Mrs. Molly, with a smile, and stood to her bedside. This predation was made by Prof. Hussey and has been widely scientific, in a literature before the Society of Arts.
This predation would have been possible. Prof. Hussey said. Biological experiments, now going on in America, England and Germany, show that the sex of an infant can be changed even after conception, he asserted, he added, in show that the ratio of male to female offspring can be made to fluctuate under artificial conditions. The sex of an infant may be found by which the sex of human beings can be reversed by birth to the infection of some chemicals he has the total sex of the scientists.
It is highly possible that there are human intercourse that neither male nor female, he said. "If this is so, it is wrong for the mother to have an intercourse that they belong to a third category.

Whites, Facing Starvation, Murder Firemen, Shoot Brakemen From Cars to Secure Employment
By NATHAN HOPKINS
LANT locomotives burdened with strings of heavy coaches plowing their course through small Southern towns from one big commercial center to another have become of more interest to the university white South Side men in nonsterile backwounds who stood with mother in the door and waved a glial greeting to the operators of these engines as they whizzed past the calm doorway. The tot's interest was one that gave joy to a boy's heart; the white Alabama man is one born of a murderous desire. The tot could only wave, tuck his little uncombed head in mother's lap, and then he could die, the day he could be a fireman, flugman or brakeman to have "fun" on these moving steel giants. It's a boy's life that is innocently and amuphly spurred.
The unemployed white South, watching the same object as the tot, but with another desire for it, has his arm revolver back to its burning bosom of hate, gritted its teeth and yearned for the day that it could take a "pleasure shot" at the man in the black hand that lifted the red flag and guided the train over dangerous crossings, and the faithful brakeman whose unaltered face was the men ahead the word "to go on." It's the South's way. It's murder—carefully and deliberately planned. "Pleasure Shots."
For over a year on railroads in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Georgia the unemployed white South has been enjoying the pleasure of a brakeman, briskened with soot and perspiration, evidences of a struggle for honest livelihood, has been suicured with unfortunate pain, and palesting, dark-skinned hand of the brakeman has been shot away, and the faithful brakeman has tumbled from his freight car, limp in form, answer to the bullet armed
Why have these men become victims of a system they are not responsible for, armed, driven from their jobs and hunted like wild animals and trapped into death, for the mere desire of enjoying the best that is in them? Why is it that the Southern hawkers found on them when they appeal for aid and are killed? Why is it that the hawkers themselves have forbidden their men, objects of attack, to arm and protect their own lives? Why are they always listed on the "unknown party loiter" at the sheriff's office? Does it not seem likely that the hawkers and want to see the well done? These questions and many others have become peculiar puzzles to men who are not well trained and come back on No. 10. Honest, conscientious and bubbling over with energy to throw chew wave the flesh to someone for protection. Will they get it?
When war suddenly ended the poor white element of the South seemed to have a general understanding. The clubs, supposedly composed of "overseas veterans," began to demand charters and buy powder for target practice. Meet-together and a yelling was carried out to promote the spirit of organization. All of this was done in the name of patriotism. After the fever began to subside the veterans began to look for jobs. None was to be found. Too ignorant to hold clerks and other white-collar positions that required certain mental training was the resort to hired labor. Having had a taste of city life, the farms no longer interested them. They wanted something better, and to attend their organization" meetings.
In Mississippi the Ku Klux Klan was painting favor and spreading the propaganda "warm" or "inner circle, one night a speaker pointed to the rullords. The word passed around, good ideas. We well know we'll shoot them." Members of the gun clubs began tactic practice to get perfect aim. Then the first letter was written on the M. I. railroad at West Point, Miss. It read: "This is to advise you that we will organize the list of September to hunt you another job. We have organized for the purpose of removing the nigger from the area and about you dawn like rabbits. If it we have to get on your train at some water tank or other place and about you dawn like rabbits, the leader of the nigger threw, so we want you to tail the rest of the

Blanka, alarmed at the message, soundly conference with officers and it little heed, and considered it the pranks of a joker. It was placed in the office files and forgotten. Blanks continued the spirit of the movement became apparent in Clarkdale and Aleeden. It reached Memphis and several other towns, and gla gla was the last to seize the manta. Eskar Stokes, brakeman on the Atlantic Coast Line, was the last man to pay the penalty for violating the terms of the letter.
The First Murder
The first shot to send horror into the heart of the breakken was the murder of Horace Hurd at Lake Coronant, Miss. Hurd, 11, and murried, was shot to death with buckshot when the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley railroad. He was literally torn to pieces by the terrific discharge of the weapon, which he found jinned to which reads:
"Let this be a lesson to all nigher brakenmen."
Clothes clipped in greedy overalls and blood-soaked, was sent home to his wife, who had not been informed of his untimely death. The undertaker, who was in his死 husband's pocket gave her the reason. Hurd had been employed by the road since October 28, 1916. Hurd became a defender of the threats because apparent among both officials and employees of the roads. They did their best to ignore them, but Hurd's death acted as a ghost to revive their timidity. A month passed before another death was heard in August 1921, Brankert Arthur Tyler, age 27, was shot and instantly killed at Banks, Miss. miles south of the town, and Hurd was unhurt. Tyler had been employed by Yaxon & Mississippi Valley railroad since August 1910, and was considered an expert on the railroad. Other employees of the road heard his assistants escape through the woods. After a later and Tyler had been applied applications flooded the railroad offices. They were from white men seeking the jobs of these men. Efforts to link them with the killings
This move on the part of the white men, some think, is the result of the railroad officials in the matter. Following the announcement that the whites had been forced to leave Brooklyn for Brooklyn Hunger on the Illinois Central railroad, which is said to control the railroad, the two men, was killed at Ralineo, Teon, on the night of May 6, 1821, when his train stopped for miles south of Memphis. Public sympathy had been greatly aroused by this time. Not for the white men who committed the crimes, Newspapers throughout the South began to encourage hatelessness by the white men who committed the crimes. Much ink was used in advising the Illinois Central officials in Chicago to let the South suit its own "race" offense. Division superintendents and trainmasters were mum on the issue and lukewarm in their attitude of investigations. These elements served to encourage the murderers.

Realizing they had the community back of them in their dastardly prince-ty, they even enrolled the town marshal in the service, and the sheriff was not to be noticed unless someone wanted to kill him. Tennessee became a little too hot for the gang. Baker talked too much. They drew back to Mississippi, Burnside, Miss. that the next shot was heard. Henry Acragem, baker-man on the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad, unlush as the train took on water.

One shot embedded itself in the hand of a drafter and another punctured the engineer's drinking cup. Acromen, profusely lurking in the darkness, Laurel, Miss, for treatment. But little hope was entertained for his recovery. The shooting of Acromen spread his wildness, had been the cause of his suffering, and was thought to be exempt from the warning sent out by the gang. Several of his fellow workmen, who were white, had told him: "Aceron was the target." The attack on Acromen stirred matters, considerably. Wires were sent in the officials of the road demanding help. The local police and firemen investigated the shooting of Acromen.

Barker declared that he had been told that he would be paid $300 for each brakeman, dagger or fireman he killed. According to his orders from ringleaders of the gang to kill a "all yellow nigger" who would appear on a train at Memphis, Barker said he hid in the woods and when the train approached he aimed his rifle at Barker. seen greatly out for the brakeman in the crimes, the South in sympathy with the gang, and in many instances led firemen and they could be in perfect aim for the ambulance in Chicago. Word was passed that the gang had offered $100 for each brakeman or brakeman killed, and $200 for the brakeman on the island and investigate. Conditions were quiet for awhile, then came the next attempt.
Denny Jacobs narrowly escaped the brakeman's white flagman reported to him that community hardly practiced brakeman in the city, so it is not to be wanted to be to determine whether or not he was armed. He was warned. According to reports, members of the gang were not awaived and awaited the arrival of his train.
Jacobs probably owes his life to an engineer, one of the few whites who gang rulers, and whose life had also been threatened. The engineer is white, however, and could carry a pistol without interference on the ground, and the several men in the bushes when the train approached a water tank, and warned Jacobs to remain in the engined and would investigate. There were shots when the train pulled away several shots were fired at the freight cars. The flagman, who attempted to escape, is in jail at Memphis. Team, guarded with the murder of a policeman. For the second time Kit Mitchell, fireman on the Aberdeen branch of the railroad, was in jail dangerously wounded. He was shot July 17 at Glendive, Miss, and was recently wounded at Sturgeon's Bay. He was later shot point being a branch "headquarters" of the gang. Mitchell has been a fireman for 22 years, and is held in high esteem by officials.

Williams declared the men who shot him and pointed to them when he fell. Instead of following his directions Williams asserted that the special agent ran in the opposite direction.
Refuse to Arrest
Members of the gang, eager to
murder, almost made a fatal mistake
in firing on a mail train near Grenada. Boss Brown and Ross Caldwell were killed by the game to do the shooting, were arrested and placed in jail at Oxford, Miss, following the shooting of a man in the Valley and Grenada districts. They were taken into custody by a United States marshal on charges of obstructing interstate commerce with the delivery of the mails.
By some clever legal loophole they escaped prosecution. The most recent murder is that of a 19-year-old girl, played up by a breakman by the Atlantic Coast Line. Children on their way to school at Norcross, Ga., found the bullet-riddled body of Stokes in the middle of the road. The bullet holes in his body he was badly mutilated. This gave evidence to the theory that Stokes had been

A statement coming from Mr. Markham's office expressed sympathy for the victims of the gang. It will continue the services of the men as whatever cost, and the belief is strong that the gang will be eventuated. The demand of the white murder gang has been so pressing on the railroad men that an important meeting was held in the station, Ala. Must Know Much to Be Book Thief
Bibliophiles Study Ways To Fool the Owners Of Bookstores
You may think as you browse among the loaded tables and shelves of the old book store that nobody is paying any attention to you, that all those fascinating treasures, some of them of great value, are unguarded and that you could easily supply a new book to your pocket without anybody being the wiser. You'd better think again. The man in charge may be occupied with customers and not looking at you, but what has become of him is little other. Look closely at the wall of booklets that divides the little office from the store. You can see the awarding you from some crevices among the perished books. Your fellow browser in hat and overcoat, who seems lost in the shady volumes he is picking up and poring over, are you certain he is not the book receiver on the watch for book thieves. Yes, there are book thieves aplenty, and these are the ones that are them. And despite precautions the piling goes on to the extent of thousands of dollars a year, this year than usual, the book
Sell Plunder to Collectors
Some shabby little old volume may be worth hundreds if you take a first-class book. Others may be a little old. It follows a bibliophile to know its value for the wiser dealer doesn't mark the press of his valuable books in plain text. It follows a bibliophile to the most dreaded book theses are bibliophiles gone wrong. Many of those professional book theses are not published by the most prestigious authors who are collecting books for their libraries. They know exactly what classes of books they are interested in and by praying upon the dealers in old books they turn a pretty profit. A bibliophile, even when he has gone to great lengths to acquire a sculptor, esthetic and equipping persuasion, and that description applies to the most notorious of book shirks, a distrusted old man who moves to the city and is not well known to the leading book dealers in New York and is interested in the thefts of first editions in this city, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, Berlin and other cities of Europe. So imagine he has fallen foul of the law.
Speaking of methods, a man visited a downstreet bookstore not long ago and asked the owner a case that looked no if it contained a 'new two volume work' that he had written. The owner browsed the shelves, and after a while a pair of watchful eyes in the back of the store saw him fortuitously slip a compartment books into the escape room.
Seldom Call Police In
He continued browsing, made a trailing purchase and was allowed to travel with the removal of the books in the cardboard case, which he carried. It was an unsurpassing moment for the customer was a highly respectable person. But he wasn't arrested, and the police except in very light cases. One trick of the book thief is to substitute the book for the one abstracted from a shelf of valuable books. In one case a professional book thief brought to the store a book he designed to steal, bound in the same style. The substitute was worth $350. The store was worth $100. And then the store was worth $100. One of their favorite tricks is to have a piece of thread wrapped around his neck and by along the inner margin of the picture they desire to hide. He kidnapped, and the thief moves about for a few minutes examining other books. "By the time he returns to the house, he'll rip up along the moistened line with neither noise nor effort.

At last in 1895 there emerged from the Atlanta Exposition one who was to play a large part in shipping the hiss *Haire*—Bocker *T. Washington*.
Mr. Washington saw that his perseverance had been lost from the charleses of slavery, and who had not been properly trained to make their way in the business that would enable them to cope with those around them. He saw that in the South at least, politics took Tuskegee today stands as a monument to his achievements. JOSPHEN HENRY TAYLOR, Lincoln Institute, Lincoln Ridge, Ky.
AMERICA'S GREATEST MAN
Boeker T. Washington was a man who did much to better the condition of his family. His desire for education is clearly seen by his walking great distances to attend school and later working in any job he could find. He is the first of his lives to receive the honorary degree from a New England university. Harvard, where he was a graduate, by your station in life but by the barriers overcome.
Boeker T. Washington was born in 1817 in New York City to a small girl. His mother was an honest, hard-working woman, and after freedom was gained was strict in having children observe the rules of society. The unceasing efforts in raising Fiskenger Institute from an ill ventilated school to a well-educated one without their reward, for today it stands as a monument to his untrifling devotion.
Fiskenger Institute was one of America's greatest men for his successful labor, ability and integrity caused him to be widely known.
Baker Tolsteroff Washington, the famous educator, leader and reformer, was born in a slave but on his way to college, roads post office called Hale's Ford, in Franklin county, Virginia, about 1870. Washington had a fine and noble character. His whole life showed perseverance, will power and courage.

Roosters Used To Fight in Days of Old
Roosters Used To Fight in Days of Old
To tell a lively tale of any contest without talking in terms of a sport that has been legally forbidden in England since 1919 and in some of our own states since an even earlier date is almost impossible. That sport is quick fighting. It is probably the most ancient in the world. Public sentiment rose against it about the same time as did general sentiment against slavery. Horse racing tended to become a substitute sport.
But the terminology of cock man has fastened itself so firmly upon the English language that the words of the cockpit are used casually by folk who have no notion of their description or of their original meaning. "Pulp" constitutes, "to turn tail," "to die game," "to stove up," "to show light," "to feel like a fighting cock" are some of the phrases that owe their origin to a sport so ancient that mention of it appears in some of the earliest known Chinese records.
Known since the earliest antiquity in China, it was also popular in India, the home of the wild jungle cock, from which these ferocest of all fattered fighters were probably originally based. From India it spread to Egypt and all
His introduction to the West through the Greeks came about in a most dramatic manner. He was on the march of his men against the Iceni, because he happened to see a pair of cockles fighting. To the group he admisbining them to meet their enemies with the same splice. In commemoration of the victory, Athens had to attack and from this somehow solemn beginning it rapidly became a popular sport. Birds were taught to flight in Alexandria, Delos, Tangium and Rhodes vided with each other in breeding the best straits. Rome was slow to take it up. For Greece, the sport of treche and the Fast, but when they did begin to take an interest they spread, it through their armies and colonizing all west.
In this way it it was introduced into Britain. Earliest mention of it shows that there was a William Fitzsusher told in some detail of the "coocking matches" arranged by the masters at Shrewsbury. He was Shrewsbury Tuesday. Parents contributed money toward this affair, the tax being called coockence, and they also gave money to the school quite as freely as bull puns are kept by the college boys of the present. He adds, curiously enough, that the dead birds fell to the teach-
The height of interest in cock fighting in England was probably reached in the reign of Henry VIII, who had adopted lolli in his palace at Wittenham. The "maffee" or spurs for regular cooking males were of steel, though silver ones were used. The demand when each town had its own pit, and London had several, the name "Cock Swane" was given to the street where the fighting continued and were sporting goods and their shops. Public agitation began against the "hattled Royale" and the Welsh fighting continued till all but one of the birds entered were dead or mortally wounded. At the ordinary cooking main fights were arranged because the match was won by the side having the largest number of victorious birds. This was the usual type of match in the days when no ship of a vessel was built, with a failure of boats on board.
called admittance to Hampton University. He was given a room to study in the college, placed by the matron, using a white handkerchief. This thorough done, he was able to enroll. His hardships at Hampton. Although he was handcapped he graduated in June, 1872. He graduated from Hampton in 1891. Harvard, 1896; Dartmouth, 1901. Through Gen. Arnastow, Washington was elected principal at Tuxerue in Kentucky. It was read before the school. These were his words: "Booker T. Washington will suit me, sometime once." He then started "Tuxerue." When he arrived he was greatly disappointed. The town was in a bad condition. He was colored. After many hardships and long struggles he opened the school and was successful. He and Mrs. Washington left for Europe. He was highly honored and treated with respect while staying there. They stayed there. In 1841 he was taken to the St. Luke hospital in New York. He wanted to move to a college. He spent time at the hospital. He died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1915.

SAW RACE'S FUTURE
"Great oaks spring from small nouns." There is no better example of our own Barker T. Washington. He was born of slave parentage in the small town of Cedar Creek, 1885. He had no financial means of securing an education, but there were two things he learned from his mother and a spark of ambition within himself "to do and be." We learn from "Tennessee" that from Slacky" that his family moved to Marden, W. Va., where Barker worked in a school. He went to eight school for three and then worked his way from Marden to Hampion, where he graduated in 1875. He was sent to Tuckekee in
Docker T. had a clear insight into the future of the Race. He saw that students would use his hands and brains. As a consequence we have the great school of the South, Traskigee, Ala. We build their own quarters and built their own squares and bufflings. Docker T. wanted them to realize that nothing could be outsourced. Abraham Lincoln liberated the slaves of the South, so Docker T. educated their offspring. This great work in the educational field until God saw it to remove him from our midst. The country went North to South his life. The name, memory and spirit of Docker T. Washington will live for years. He will live him a living monument which the sands of time can never destroy.

Colorado Law Says Boys May Be Solomons
Colorado Law Says Boys May Be Solomons
Denver—Male infants of Colorado may have as many wives as Solomon. There's no law in *the* Centennial state that allows a man to have more than that. That is the gist of a decision handed down in the district court here by Judge James M. Munger, the mining judge. E.W. Walsh Patton, 14, to Lloyd J. Parsons, 19, Kansas pastor, the mother of Mrs. Parsons used to drive her to an underground that both contracted parties were infants. The girl said her marriage was a prank that she had never lived through. Judge Bradford uncovered an almost forgotten statute permitting the amputation of "infantile marriages" at the insurgents of either the husband or wife.
"If every marriage of juveniles were annulled," it was pointed out by concurring counsel, "prevent a youthful Juan from taking into bliss as many wives as King Solomon is reputed to have had. I do not believe this ancient account. The fact is that Colorado needs a law to prevent the marriage of fathers and the repeat of statutes which make possible the existence of a juvenile lossless parents can show coercion or indifference on the part of the contracting parties the courts should refuse to dissolve unions of juveniles." To the extent that pleas would be to encourage lechery,
This is the third time that the old
city has been down in the district courts of Colorado.
"DIXIE'S" ORIGIN IN THE NORTH
Birmingham, Aha—A Mr. Pixie, who was a kind-hearted man, and a large shareholder on Manhattan behind during the last of the 18th century, treated his slaves with great kindness, and his plantation was regarded by them as an earthly paradise. When any of the slaves were sold, they always pined to be back with Divile.
As slavery moved southward, Pixie's bleak was carried along. The slaves sing of their old home with such enthusiasm and so often that the origin was soon forgotten and the name applied to the Southern states. The Southern states have long regarded the word as a derivation of Dixon, the surveyor, with whom Mason surveyed the Mason and Dixon line.
The name is supposed. By South-
western use, it is used to
use when Texas joined the Union.

Italian Gets Picture On U.S.Money
Mrs. di Francisci's Face Replaces That of Miss Williams on Coin
Since 1878 every American has been familiar with the face of Miss Anna Frankenstein, who work in the Philadelphia public schools, because her face was the model of the design on the old silver Milwaukee Journal. But, with the coming of the new "peace dollar" Miss Williams's place Franklin, wife of the young student sculptor who designed the new dollar, Mrs. Frankenstein posed for her portrait that appears on the new coin. I have talked to both of these women, "Peace among the nations," said Mrs. Frankenstein, commenting on the fact that too big a thing for me to talk about. I'm only the wife of a sculptor whom I'm trying to help make. The woman was leading me to the studio—the front room in their office suite. Can the beginning Free Be interested in Anthony's art, she said, "I study and keep up with it and try to get ideas that will help, light and I must suit my day to his work. Since Anthony is the greatest work I must submerge my plan—and meana peace and happiness for
And I wondered if this lovely little Italian woman had not, after all, found the principle of peace for the man she loved. Mrs Williams, model of the old dollar design, today is a white-hulled woman, mostly engaged in her kindergarten work at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 35 years ago George Morgan, English sculptor, selected her as model for his show dollar design, in her insane house in New York, where he lived. "Why, when I'm nearly of retiring age, should you talk to me of something that happened in my youth?" Mrs Williams kindergarten work that would be a different matter."
And the best known face in the United States smiled good naturally.

Negri: by Benjamin Hrailey, Macmillan Company, New York. The author of this volume says in his book, *The Negro in America*, that he now 40 years since George W. W. Williams completed his 61st "History of the Negro in America," with a brilliant studies of periods or episodes since that important work appeared, no doubt on the subject comprehensively, and meanwhile the face has passed through some of its most critical standing political) phases of the subject, especially in the period of the Civil war, have been frequently studied. This point of view, and his study of legal aspects is not likely soon to be supernatural history of the Negro, however, is laws on the statute books have not necessarily been regarded, public housing on being considered. It is necessary, accordingly, to study the actual life of the Negro people both constructive and national *...* it thus becomes not only a social history of the race, but also the first formal effort toward understanding the Negro problem in America.
Since the beginning of time the history of any people has been that they have taught and led that people in its wars or established and conquered. Therefore the stable books, the accounts of battles and wars, and to a less extent the lives of great poets, have been the chief source books for writers or historical, accounts. The industrial revolution and the modern invention has done to revolutionize the world and its made of living raises the skill of the inventor and the organiser of industry in the chief figures in the march well to desist somewhat from the leathen path in his effort to throw light on this in the best work that is the best work that has so far come from the pen of this author, and despite the fact that he has their leaders, his account of the revolts of Nat Turner and Vayay are the most delightful chapters in the book their leaders, but readable, entertaining and informing. It ought to soft and formal, but readable, entertaining and informing. It ought to subject and be useful to students and the average reader alike. Macmillan has printed and bound the work in its own subject and will be a credit to any library. We hope the author will continue to send to the world some examples of his books, the chief which he makes such a fine plea.

Long Beach. Cat-Dynamiters dressed in insubstance clothing braved the great column of flames that engulfed the building, blinding a charge of explosive which blew out the fire. One hundred pounds of gelatine dynamite, wrapped in insubstance clothing, poured in pellets, covered chute close to the flaming well. A detonator shot the charge, while it was in the midst of the column, and the ground. The explosion cut the flame column, the downward force blowing out the fire.

Thirteenth Lucky Day In History
King Louis XIII. of France, perhaps because he was the thirteenth king of that name, regarded the number with the greatest possible reverence. He called himself Loya de Bourbon, and his wife Anna d'Antirle, for the reason that each of those names contained 13 letters. The two were married at the age of 12, and throughout his reign the king inevitably selected the thirteenth day of the month for any great enterprise which he was undertaking. Even on his death he clung to his belief in his "lucky number," resembling that, since he would have to die before its arrival, the thirteenth of the month was still many days off.
In the United States the number 13 has thieved most strikingly in his history, and almost invariably for good, remarks the Detroit News. There were at the time of the revolution 13 colonies, which became the 12 original states. On this account the nation thus originally consisted of 15 states and 12 stripes, and the 12 stripes remain to this day. There are also 13 letters in the national motto, "El Phirbus Unum." The castle portrayed in the escutcheon of the great-seat has 13 feathers in each wing. It was June 13, 1778, that France decided to come to the aid of America.
The great seal of the United States was designed June 13, 1782. The Northwest territory was organized July 13, 1757. Dec. 12, 1791, it was deplored to make the permanent capital of the nation in the District of Columbia, and Oct. 13, 1792, the cornerstone of the white house was laid. The first distinctively American flag displayed in the South was Col. Moulrie's at the capture of Fort Johnson, Sept. 13, 1757.
