PUT SPIKE THRU NECK TO HOLD VICTIM
Price, Utah, June 26—Hunted down from the foothill that for five days had sheltered him from molts out to avenge the death of a white city marshal, Robert Marshall sought shelter in his cabin late Wednesday night only to be betrayed to the mob by his own cablimate, a man of his own face, and tortured and lynched.
When Marshall, half-starved and half-exhausted, dragged himself into the but he shared with another man, his "bunkie" notified the white leaders of the mob. While Marshall slept Thursday evening, the mob surrounded the cabin, broke in, strapped up their man, formed an auto parade to "Al" Horsey's ranch, and put Marshall to what they thought he would have accomplished of killing City Marshal James M. Burns of Castlegate. The manhunt for him had been in progress for five days. The lynching, the fifth manhunt, was almost deflished in its deliberate torture.
Mob Warns Victim ;
A rope was tied around his neck, the other end was plung over a tree limb, then Marshall was swept over the limb and held at the air and the fall. Then he was hoisted 25 feet and his limp body dangled with a sickenking swing as he moved your hands to take the weight off your neck. the nock leaders told him, "well cut your hands off." Nine nocks dangled profusely, once the victim moved as if to raise a hand to his neck, but the whites on the ground below instantly reported their warrage. The attack was unnecessary—Marshall was unconscious.
Three deputy detectives Sam Garrett, Jake Loyner, and a city marshal, Warren Pencock, who had sat idly by, now cut down the limp body and dumped it into a drive off, the crowd, which had shown no disposition to interfere, noticed signs of Marshall returning to life. The officers gave up the body and Marshall was again hung up.
Nailed to Tree
With the rope secure about his neck, Marshall was hoisted three feet and the other end of the rope was held up to the tree. He was jerked up 42 feet in the air, and suddenly let fall to the ground. Three feet from the ground the rope tightened and Marshall's neck was broken. The rope was held up to the tree, his body was held upright against the tree and a large snake was driven through his neck which held his limp form to the timber. A member of the patrol battered his head with an auto arm. Sheriff Denning, who had luttered along the way, arrived and tore the body from the tree. All of the men were engaged in business here and are well known. No investigation or arrests are expected.

DR. BOWLING IS DROPPED BY CITY
Dr. Alonzo J. Bowling, for 10 years a member of the censor board of the city of Chicago, was summarily dropped from the board last week after he had been charged with assault and battery. The charges were preferred by Albert S. Waller, a white telephone clerk.
Prejudice at Trial
At the board trial addidavng were produced showing that the two white men were directly responsible for the black resident of this city, had taken every means of avoiding trouble, but in spite of this he was dropped by the board, according to Dr. Bouling, there must be evidence to believe that his color played a prominent part in his disobedient. The prosecution, according to evidence, was not conducted regularly through the civil service trial process, but through a visible prosecution led by a Texas woman, who recently resigned from the coron board and is now affiliated with the Women's Club whose president influenced the commission. On several occasions, he declared: attempt have been made to force him from the board, but because of his affiliation with whom he the efforts of those with whom he worked he has withstood attacks.
Well Educated
Dr. Boulming is one of the best educated men in the city. He has studied at Kansas State Normal and Alabama State Normal, Northwestern, Ohio State, Chicago, Boston and Harvard, taking special research work in education, philosophy, sociology and religion. He has also worked for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Geographic society and the Society club of London. For a number of years he has been director of the Committee of Fifteen. His work with the sensor board has been above reproach. It was he who took an active stand against the use of the entire remaining board. An investigation has been started by Alderman Anderson and Jackson of the city council and El Wrlicht, Illini College. A second, ward committee, and George T. Kersey, committeeman of the Third ward. Other civic organizations have interested themselves hard to get justice done Dr. Boulming.

The dead are Isaac Johnson, 25, 196 Wood St. first to enter the manhole; Sam Thomas, 1302 St. James St., who started the rescue, 1302 St. James St., who tried to rescue both men, J. H. Johnson entered what construction company officials are said to have devised to repair work. He was but three steps from the top when he fell back as if he had slipped. Thomas hurried to the bottom of the E-foot so he seemed to think had merely fallen. He clatched Johnson's body and started climbing, but shouted almost immediately, "It's too much for me!" Morris, here of several earlier rescues, started down the hole with a rope, but before he could fasten it the stricken men he was overcame. Meanwhile, the fire department had been asked for a gas mask, but the order was hungled and the mask which finally arrived was defective. The mask to enter the hole, attached the rope to two of the bodies and had them handed to the surface. He collapsed as soon as he came up and it took him to the third floor. Florence Whitfield said that all three clings had been asphyxated with carbon dioxide gas like that which collects in walls. Their bodies were taken in the W. A. Price undertaking earlier.
Johnson is survived by a widow and two children, aged 5 and 1.

MISS. EDNA WHITE
Has Plenty of "Pep"
"I was just dragging around, more sick than well, when I started using St. Joseph's G. F. P., says Miss Edna White, the well-known business woman of our group, who lives at 514 S. 11th St., Birmingham, Ala. "I didn't have any appetite; couldn't rest well at night and felt so tired-out and miserable all the time it was all I could do to drag myself to work. I had just been taking G. F. P. a few days when I started feeling better and now I have all my old 'pep' and energy back and feel fine all the time."
It is amazing to see how tired, worn-out women and girls seem to take a new lease on life once they start using the phenomenal medicine known as St. Joseph's G. F. P. This is easily explained, however, when you stop to consider the well known power and reliability of this phenomenal medicine in overcoming and stamping out Catarrh of the Female Organs.
We now know that in at least nine out of ten cases that dull, listless feeling of weariness is as sure an indication of the presence of this dreaded malady, Catarrh, as the more painful ailments, such as headaches, backaches, pains in the sides and limbs, irregularity, nervousness, cramping, nausea, dizziness, fainting spells, displacement troubles and hot flashes, which are so common among women

A casual chance into a recent issue of a well established newspaper纸箱 to my mind a case in the history of my years ago. As I read the little clipping the scene before my eyes failed.
I was standing in the Cook county jail, a kind of town square and the woman to whom I was talking, I say woman because it is relative to her sex, but she was a mere sib of a girl. This child, still in her teens, had been a boy, a murderer, charged with having shot and killed the man with whom she had lived out of the police court for over a year. The police even declared that she had shot him six times in the back with an automatic gun. This little girl had committed a Robinson Madison county, Kentucky. She knew out the ways of some men in a large city, and was soon a prey to their wife.
She told me that she had often been beaten by men, and, being along in the world, she had made a row in secret. She had made up her mind, though, to quit being a target for their blows and had determined to fight.
Her first fight ended in death for her tormentor. She asked me what she was doing. When I heard her next I told her that I had interested a friend of mine in her death, whom I had told that she was imprisoned and without money or credit, and of delight that was uttered by the woman of the world. I could hear the cries of her. *Thank God, thank God, thank God.* Flags of hope beamed from her eyes, and she was as a person electrified, when I visited her again at the jail. She was morose, sadly and self-destructioning. I soon learned that the other mates of the jail who were there charged with murder, had ridden because she had a woman attorney. Their prophecies had ranged from so far as to predict that she would be hanged. The accused, woman's five of these women had gone to prison, although each of them had highly regarded criminal lawyer.

Buth finally felt him and he tried to begin over with his wife, but the woman refused her to come back to him, but she not only refused, but would not allow her to be brushed over the matter for a time, he purchased a 45 caliber army rifle. After brooding over the matter for a time, he purchased a 45 caliber army rifle. At the first trial on April 24 the death penalty was insisted upon by the judge, and a new trial with difficulty. Dr. Budley Singer, nuncet alienist, who testified in the Loch Leopard case, gave testimony that the camp might have committed the crime while in a peculiarly unconscious man, known to medical science as a twilight condition." At the second trial this statement might have been disputed by Dr. Clarence A. Neyman, enlightenment psychiatrist, also called in by the court, mental, physical and neurological findings in the case were absolutely necessary, the man was normal in every respect. The counsel for the defense then entered into a technical and scientific succeeded in getting an admission that if a victim were in the treelike position under suggestion,
Attorney Hales used the statement of Mrs. Janeh Scott, 2131 South Park Ave., to describe the specific suggestion, Mrs. Scott testified that she stood looking at the camera as the campfire had died the third shot, she found voice to scream: "Don't shoot her again, she's dead!" He then asked the camera aimed the rescuers and waved arms.
In Police Station
The specialist said that the prisoner had the police station about 5 o'clock the morning of the shooting. He claimed to have no knowledge of what happened, but having sustained a fracture of the skull when quite young, the result of unconsolently. During the entire trial when his lawyer attorney battled against heavy odds, the murderer sat apparently uninterested in his chair with his hands folded quietly. Only twice did he show any emotion once to the bar to ask for a hearing, and had asked it, his lips twisted. Again when he was called to the bar to bringling voice of his aged mother called to him from the rear of the courtroom, tears rolled down his cheeks
"I sentence you to prison for the term of your natural life, but a gift from his mother's life: "Thank God, his life is spared!" She then rushed to the children, and this is the first of 16 children, and this is the first time Campbell, in a short interview with a Defender reporter, said he felt that he had been taken for his greatness to his relatives, who had stuck by him so loyalty, of he also expressed apprehension in the uniting efforts of Attorney Bates.

THE GREAT 'RACE ISSUE'
By WILLIAM PICKENS
John Powell (white) of Virginia, who writes her heroically in the Daily Mail, lates in his efforts to preserve "racial integrity" for a race which is as "racial as the general and the white southern end of it in particular. The so-called itself consists of Germans, old Britons, Normans, Romans (thesewels a complicated mixture of the North Africa) and of about everything else that is human. There is hardly any other country in the North-Australia. But the southerner of the United States has, in Europe, an inextricable infusion of plum West African Negro. There are hectares, mostly in the South, today, besides the other "tostie" of a million or more mulltattoos who have learnt to moor in the South, today, in order to escape being oppressed by the white race. Strange to relate, to the black has caused the proud white to receive a large infiltration of blood that runs in the veins of proud white southerners today would not be treated as an equal human being and had therefore found it of no consequence to "pass" for white when he to be seven-eighths white or less.
And still at this late date Powell may do some good and may delay his "clubs" would begin to work at his right point—to prevent southern multifaceted militaries. Strict laws to prevent that would do at least some good, and especially in Virginia from marrying white people, and especially in preventing Colonel women, is a great joke, for it is a law to prevent the thing that does not solve the problem, and solitely negligible. But the intrusion of white males into the Negro race is occurring every minute in the South, and every day in Newport News. And, remember, it is the prominent law-making class, that has done and is doing this thing against which law-making class, that has done and is doing this thing against which Mr. Powell, the editor of the Press some questions, which may Do you know that the blood that has been forced over from the white South has come from the very "best" class of whites—from governors, editor, and other artists.

SOCIAL EQUALITY
IS ONLY METHOD
How amalgamation can be prevented I do not know, since it never does get that the only way to go around to slow it up and it be decently while it goes is to make the races absolutely equal status, in such a condition of equality it is conceivable that the proper education of both races and the preventable—might even prevent amalgamation.
But it could take a brave white individual the truth of that truth in the South.

I am devoting my life to the upbuilding of what I call our racial pride; some would call it self respect, but we have caught that spirit; now we must go on. We must develop, in every member of our group, that quality known as pride. It is not enough that some scientists are admitting that the glorious Cleopatra was of our race-let us prove once and for all that we have here in America some of the most beautiful women of the world.
Our type of beauty rivals that of all other peoples; our girls and women are endowed with beauty—but too many of them have been neglecting their heritage. For ten years I have been preaching the gospel of complexion. We do not want to be white but we do want that light, bright, velvety textured skin that is rightfully ours. If your hair is harsh and hard it is only because you do not give it any care. Your hair should be soft and silky, with a soft wave—and it will be if you use my Golden Brown Preparations.
Look about you! Note the muddy, sallow, blotchy skins of people of other races. It is only those who take care of their complexions that are spoken of as "handsome." If we, women
