It will be a spontaneous outburst from a Race that has "found itself." Standing at the close of a brilliant era—and the opening of an even brighter one—our Race will make the week of celebration this fall a red-letter one. With Chicago leading the way, all sections of the country will join to commemorate the 60th anniversary of freedom. The splendid progress of the six decades from 1865 to 1925 will be inspiration enough. For history has no finer record than the half-century of achievement of this Race in freedom. But it would be a curious footnote to a period so filled with accomplishment if 1925 found our people without enough honest pride to celebrate. That footnote won't be written. In today's array of banks, buildings and big business, we have too many reminders of our present power. We stand, in this first year, at a landmark, looking back on six decades of a Race carving its way up from less than nothing to a full share in civilization. We started with slavery—with hell itself—and elbowed our way into schools, homes and churches. Sixty years ago our capital was in muscle, hardened in a stern school. Today, with a Race capital of $2,000,000,000 accumulated from well-carved savings, we stand ready to launch into a new business and industrial era. Do you think we won't celebrate? The more educational value of such a review of Racial progress as this week will bring will be hard to estimate. When back among the Greeks old Socrates was preaching his motto, "Know thyself," the Africans across the Mediterranean had gone him one better and added: "**" * * Better than thy neighbor knows thee." The white man has written history long enough. Our Race today insists upon writing its own story of advance. Progress and Achievement week will be its first step. But the jubilee will mean more than education—It will mean inspiration. The celebration will have lost its greatest value if the story of the last half-century does not stimulate greater Race pride and a determination to carry on still further. The knowledge of our past, broadly enough disseminated, will be the power of our future. If any slogan were sought for Progress and Achievement week it would be the poet's mandate, "BE PROUD." HUGE CELEBRATION IS PLANNED FOR RACE ON 60TH YEAR OF FREEDOM Chicago will lead the way this fall in the biggest "birthday" celebration the country has yet seen. Our Race will celebrate its birth of freedom. Sixty years ago this fall slavery was abolished. During an entire jubilee week—from Oct. 5 to Oct. 10—the progress and achievements of the Race in the 60 years since the passage of the 15th amendment will be commemorated. A seven-week week of demonstration shared the country's leading business, political, religious and educational figures. Chicago will come to one of the most significant observances which any group has yet traced in America. The seven-day holiday will be more than a mere festival. Some leaders will be present. The 60th anniversary of freedom will be made the occasion of a grand accounting of the advance which the Race has made. Now after 60 years the nation will be proudly greeted by any people in any period or history an inventory will be taken. In the week from Oct. 5 to Oct. 10 an entire Race will pause to take stock of the advance and the going concern" will check up its assets and liabilities register the gains made and turn to the nation with its balance sheet. The nation "going taking" ever back in America will be staged in Chicago this fall. JANITOR IS HELD AFTER CHURCH FIRE Washington, D. C., Aug 7—John Williams Work, 55 years old, of Martinsburg, W. Va., who was arrested on a charge of arson last Thursday night, is alleged to have confessed to police that he started the fire in the Shiloh Baptist church, North and South streets, and the complete destruction of the edifice with damages in the extent of $50,000. Already, in various sections of the country, preparations are being made for this "stock-taking." Men and women, in the morning or post-slavery days, or any pictures, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, or articles of interest as a part of their work, are being assembled at the Defender office, where they are being compiled. Hundreds of these scattered bits of face history, coming in to the Defender office from all parts of the country, will go into the archives of the Defender office, the writings of the story of the face. The chance to help "make history" is now open to every member of the country. Because there is no family that does not cherish some picture, some clipping, or some reminiscence that will be of general interest if it is only published in some church, some church, or some organization that has by this time become old and established that get its start will be made double interesting if 7 need for Progress and Achieve-need stimulating. Work was taken into custody by the police on the street near 16th and 17th St. He admitted, police say, after attacking through the collar window and gathering a quantity of paper soaked with zacatec, which he poured into the mouth of a police pepper gun and lighted with a match. Police declared that Work also confessed to tiring the church edifice on three occasions before this one. He was arrested by the police church and had sought revenge from church officials since his dismissal from their service. He was looked up at the first church police station, where he was awaiting a preliminary hearing in police court. The recent blaze is said to have been the main auditorium. It swept through the church in a shot while destroying most of the furniture in the building and a recent purchased main auditorium. Er. J. Milton Waldenla in master. ASK DISMISSAL OF HOWARD U. Finally I got so weak and nervous from this constant suffering about all I could do around the house was to be cross and irritable. I saw St. Joseph's G. F. P. advertised and started using it. The first few doses soothed my nerves and seemed to strengthen me. Now I am on my fifth bottle of G. F. P. and I don't have an ache or a pain of any kind but am just as regular as a woman could be. I feel so strong and healthy all the time, I can't be any way but cheerful and happy." It is impossible for a woman to be happy and cheerful when she feels that her health and strength is being slowly but surely sapped away by pain and suffering from so-called "female troubles." Fortunately we now know that in nine out of ten cases the pain and suffering from these embarrassing troubles such as headaches, backaches, pain in the sides and limbs, irregularity, cramping, nausea, dizziness, fainting spells and that awful run-down and worn-out feeling of weariness and apprehension is due to one dreaded malady—Catarrth of the Female Organs. Treatment for so-called "female troubles" used to be a long tedious matter with the chances of success very uncertain, but now women everywhere can get quick, sure relief from Catarrh through the consistent use of St. Joseph's G. F. P. This is demonstrated by the thousands of women and girls, who were once thin, weak and undernourished, but who are now beaming with happiness, glowing with health and filled with new hopes and ambition through the use of this St.Joseph's G.F.P. The poems of Mr. Hazel are being printed, copied and read all over the country. Many of his admirers do not even know that he is a Jacob man. His rise to fame has been momentous. Mr. Hazel was born in Providence, R. L. Sept. 13, 1895. His father, Rev. C. D. Hazel, is an ex-presiding elder and one of A. M. E. Zhao's foremost clergymen. He is the third child of a family of seven children. The first attempt of Mr. Hazel to write poetry occurred in Newbern, N. C. He declares that he was always a love of great poetry in an early age could quote at length from his favorite authors, Longfellow, Byron and A. Guest. He was in a quandary when he wrote his first poem. He had hidden away in the back room of a doctor's office where he was employed and in 15 minutes had written 12 verses, eight lines to a verse, hardly realization. Timelyly he approached his employer and showed the efforts of his father. The doctor was so vividly impressed with the manuscript that he led them off the editor of the leading white paper to the town, and the next evening the poem appeared in that publication. In another story, there is where a charitable deed was done at the critical time, and in another taken an interest, in his work and proven that his first effort was comely and might have become discouraged and given up the attempt of trying again. When President Wilson's message was read, where he had discarded at fourth upon preparations, Mr. Hazel caught the inspiration and wrote a short poem which he christened "Pardness." This poem was published in the magazine and a splendid introduction with comment preceded the poem. Down in Washington there is a golf association and one national championship. What, we want to know is, do the talks down in that section of the country forget the United States just west of the Dominican river. With due respect to Harry Jackson, we believe he is not a national champion until he has mobilized a national meet to win. Out in Chicago, where the snake is thick from the soft coal and the small comes from the stocky yards, we do know the game of golf make the periphrasis roll off of Mr. Jackson's brown. Further, we believe if he gets into competition with Ball, Speedy and some others, including Melberson, late of Northwestern university golf team, he will be a national champion. He was not the only player didn't matter. Brown is able to concentrate his mind on the game. His mind controls his body and he knows how to win, and he goes out and wins. He also keeps in condition. That is why our players know of our athletes. Play and ice dance, dances and joy rides have killed off more amateur athletes than anything of our ball players could take a good lesson from Brown. SIMILARITY OF NAMES THE biggest trouble with our athletes and our men who manage them is the selection of teams to our desk from our New York office concerning Young Batting Ski and it found our way into the team. We have nothing against Young Ski, left here is the rub: We have to contend with batting Ski, the fighter, Reginald Ski, the winger, and along come another Ski. We have Giants, Giants and Giants, and we thrash our our brains time and again to find a baseball named the giants. Then comes the Stars, so and so Stars and so and so Stars. Miller is in great shape right now, as he has been training at his Summit, N. X. camp for several weeks, and is it ready and to demonstrate title against the best shrugs of the hope of great Britain. Mick is being schooled by Jack Kearns, who developed Jack Dempsey's lines of development that were used in the sensational rise of the heavyweight King. He sends Walker out to finish his man in the box, and then lifts the box office value of a puncher and is following this plan in bringing the Jersey shruger to that place where he will also have a chance to take the welter title. In fact, he has very little now. Outside of Dave Shade, Billy Wells is the only man in the world who has a chance to take the welter title. AUGUST 8, 1925 BROWN WINS ILLINOIST TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP Eligar Brown "just won't behave"—that is when it comes to playing tennis and that's all there is to it. He just played himself out of all kinds of holes, crossed his opponents, used his back-hand like a Tilden, used his back-hand like a Tilden, used his back-hand like a Tilden, when his opponent was playing behind the back lines, Brown just tapped—the easiest kind of a top—and the ball just fell over the net with a reverse English like a cue ball. At times it was amusing to watch his cunningness and at other times one marveled at the case in which he used the court, master at all times or a situation that looked dangerous to him. Eligar didn't go on the courts to make a spectacular grand-stair play; he went out to win the Roosevelt State bank trophy for the Illinois state championships and it didn't worry him whether it took firestrikes or whether the seers were what he went for. Brown defeated Tally Holmes of Washington, D.C. national champion, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. Brown started off like a house-mite and took the first game on his service without Holmes scoring a point. Holmes won the second game and the third. The next two sets went to Brown and a next period intervened.
