Louis), the trainer, and two assistant secretaries, Roth and McManus, who had worked hard for the comfort of the players. Just as soon as the allotment wa. made a shriek of pain was heard from the great athletes, who can yelp longer and louder about a dime than any human in the wide, wide world. They wanted all of the dough and in order to get it, appointed a committee to tell the Yankee manager that unless the ground keeper, trainer and secretaries were eliminated from the melon they would refuse to play the remaining exhibition games with the Dodgers. Sam Langford Wins In His Debut As Wrestler. Sam Langford, heavyweight fighter, made his debut as a wrestler at the Eight Regiment Armory, where he defeated Marty Cutler in a one fall match. Although a little green at Sam Langford the game, Sam winglocked his opponent and before Cutler could recover he was pinned with a headcup in 3:25. In the semi-windup Jack Andreson won from Cyclone Clancy with a half nelson and bar arm in 4:52. "Kid" Edwards and "Kid" Carter, amateurs, wrestled fifteen minutes to a draw in the opener. Real Dope. The Magnets made four runs on New York where they will make their one hit. The team lacked condition, warm weather is absolutely necessary to fit them, and it is whispered they will get that. Just as soon as the crowd was seated, the weather changed — it became colder than Blue Blazes; looks like Rube has a stand in. Make Friendly Passes at N. A. A. C. P. Many of Whose Leaders Are Said to Respond Favorably. New York; April 6. — A call for a convention of colored radicals to meet in Washington, D.C., on May 24 has been issued through the colored section of the Socialist Party press by A. Philip Randolph, Chandler Owen, Rev. George Frazier Miller, Victor D. Daly. Pipp. Peckinpaugh, Ruth and Lew is must carry the team along with their stick work. Ruth finally made a home run last Thursday, whereupon there was great rejoicing. The Detroitit players tell some funny stories about their trip in "Bam ground keepr, all "lit up" with corn whiskey would not allow the Detroit players in the grounds without tickets even though they showed up in uniform. The drunk wold not listen to Manager Jennings bt got active with a club. Finally one of the newspaper men slipped behind him and seized hi mand his trusty club, disarming him and then they went on into the grounds. Ted Esterly, who caught here for a while, and big Bill James have arrived back in the bushes at Beaumont, Texas. Charlie O'Leary of Chicago is now coach of the New York Yankees. Williams will start the season for the "Kid" on Wednesday. Cicotte has a yearly hunch that the goddess of fortune will not smile on him if he starts the first game. The "Kid" is quite right as we think that he will need the "goddess" and anything else lucky before the season ends. Rube Foster, who smokes a pipe at all times was standing in the side bleachers smoking, from where I was standin it looked like some one was burning a bale of incense. I walked down there to investigate—when I reached Rube he was pulling and puffing away like a switch engine in a hurry. Some one tipped it off that there was a bonfire and every one in the North Stand moved over to the fire. Col. Duncan ran over from Detroit to see Sam Langford "eat 'em alive!" To say he was pleased with results does not tell the story. Cutler arose fro mthe mat a dazed man, he staggered a moment, regained his balance and "shot" his alibi. He said "did he hit me"—we said: "no you hit the floor." — Curtain. Ed. Smith, sport editor of the Chicago-American, has judged some of the world's greatest wrestling bouts, among them the Hackenshmidt-Gotch championship bout at the White Sox Ball Park, as a tribute to Sam Langford, he refereed this match. He is a great admirer of Sam and any man of class, Gans, Dixon, and Jackson—all great admirers of Smith. The bandits drove up in front of the club house in a Billy Silver, deputy sheriff if Imperial County, Cal., former manager of Stanley Ketchel, prize fighter, extends his hand across the U. McIntyre, left fielder of the Detroit Tigers in their championship days, died at his home in Detroit on April 3, of Bright's disease, following an attack of influenza, at the age of 40 years. The body of the former ball player was buried at his old home in the East on Monday. The announcement of Matty McIntyre's death will bring to the mind of the fan recollections of great days is baseball, from the first incursion of the American League into major-dom until the end of Detroit's series of pennant winning campaigns. His first appearance in the budding major was with the Athletics in 1902, then he dropped into the minors and came back with the Tigers in 1905, playing with tea muntil 1911, when he was a member of the White Sox team. After two years there he again dropped back to the minors and wound up his professional career as manager of the Module team in 1916. In recent years he had played independent ball in Detroit, just for the love of the game. McIntyre was a great hitter in his day and always hovered around the .300 mark. Also base runners feared his strong left arm, for no outfielder of his time could boast of a better or truer throw. His former admirers as a ball player will be glad to know that in passing out he left an unsuilled record as a man and that his widow is well provided for. She is the only close relative surviving with the exception of a brother. Matty was born in Stonington, Conn., in 1880 and began his professional baseball career in 1901. He had but one year in the minors when his great playing fed to his advancement to the Athletics. Dropped by that club in 1902, he played two seasons in the Eastern (now International) League adn then returned to spend nine years as a major star. The game has known few more likeable or deservedly popular players. Special Announcement Ben Stillerman Ladies' and Gents' CLOTHING and FURNISHINGS Prices to suit your purse. Suits made-to-order. Apr. 13. — Governor Brough yesterday reduced the sentence of "Son" Johnson, colored, from five years to one year. Johnson was convicted in December, 1910 of assault with intent to kill. The sentence was reduced on testimony from his wife, the governor said, that the shooting was accidental. Two other colored men, Colton Sevier of Lafayette county, and Jake Haynes of Sebastian county, were paroled by the Emmitary Commission, having served one period each of their sentence. The sentence of Lee Hays, convicted in Washington Circuit Court of 11 legal sale of liquor, was suspended for four months, by proclamation of Governor Brough, in order that Hays might make a crop for his dependent family. C. W. Colton Jr. of Jefferson county was absolved from payment of a $500 bond in behalf of Percy McLean deceased. Even though Gov. Brough presides over Ark. it has not suffice to callous his heart. Problems of Dallas housewives seeking wash women may be solved by the establishment of a first-class hand laundry by the Home Maker's Industrial and Trades School for colored Women, some time in May, it was announced by Josie Briggs Hall, founder of the school and also founder of the Congress of Mothers and ParentsTeachers' Association for colored Women. Family washings and other laundry work will be handled by the organization. A drive for a building and machinery will be launched early in May. Directors for the laundry and directors for the school will be elected at a meeting of the board of directors in the City Hall in the Welfare Department. A place for the erection of the building will also be chosen. Plans for the building have been submitted to architect F. E. Robertson of Dallas. The building will be two stories high and will be equipped with the latest machinery, the founder announced yesterday. A letter received from Mrs. Frederick Schoff of Philadelphia pledged the cooperation of the white National Congress of Mothers and Parents and Teachers' Association to the negro congress for completing the work. Besides carrying on the laundry work, the school will give instruction to negro girls in all lines of work to PEYTON'S GREAT STAGE REVIEW W. C. Handy, the publisher passed thru the city on Saturday. Recently I heard a very wonderful psychologist say that it would afford him very great pleasure to be able to introduce to his audience the King of England, the President of France and a host of other distinguished personages, but that each individual would be more greatly benefited if he could receive an introduction to his own self. We each have within an unlimited supply of love, health, wealth, wisdom, success and happiness. We have the power to create more wonderful inventions than the world has ever seen. Some qualities are more predominate in some individuals than in others. But the study of the mental sciences indicates which qualities we possess in large measure and which we need to cultivate. Prof. Olin says, nearly all of us are in some degree character readers—or think we are. Almost unconsciously we judge men by the impression they make on us by their walk, the manner in which they carry themselves and wear their clothes, the quality of their dress and the mode of speech. All of these are significant outward signs of certain inward impulses. We may indeed form an opinion of a person based on a single conversation. That opinion is usually formed in great part by the impression conveyed to us by the person's face. People express their feelings, passions, and thoughts in their faces and bodily attitudes. But the face is not the only index of character and abilities. The size and shape of the skull tell us wonderful things about its owner. Musical Notes By Mildred Bryant Jones. Katherine Goodson, pianist. Devotees of Chopin received a rare treat in the recital given by Katherine Goodson in Kimball Hall on Tuesday, March 31st. Not often do artists present an entire program by one composer but when the instrument is used in his writing as Chopin, this is not a deeper venture. The rendition of all the numbers was good but in the B flat minor Scherzo, Miss Goodson most clearly demonstrated her technical ability and her true interpretation of the master. The organization and training of a Civic Orchestra—composed of amateur players who have ability to read at sight and who possess a decided leaning toward good ensemble work—is a new and excellent thing for Chicago and worthy of emulation by orchestra leaders other than Mrs. Frederick Stock, to who praise is due for this first venture. The idea is to train talented amateurs in such a manner that there is always available good material for use in the leading orchestras and to give proper encouragement and musical aid to the deserving ones. Amelita Galli Curci and Rosa Cissa. On Easter Sunday afternoon, evening these two vocal stars deliver the large audience which had braved the blizzard to crowd the vast Auditorium Theatre. He has as much native ability as any other race. Social studies have proven that the race has not fallen entirely into abject degeneracy and that we have no great degree of burnt out cells or any penalties for inbreeding. The reason must be racial carelessness. Racial carelessness is typified all over America. The fight must be from within, and the victory will be reflected from without. The real cause for racial carelessness we are not interested in. Whethr it is the upshot of slavery, economic pressure, misleadership, or of the period of time. The race is careless, the masses are careless, Pure, unadulterated love for our people, the desire for independence, social equality, and international prestige, causes the elimination of subterfuge and evasion, and causes us to behold the bare facts. The Ngro is absolutely carless in industry. He does not take serious concern in learning the modern methods of doing things, but is content to draw salaries and perform his work as machines without mind or reason. He is not a competitive producer. He is merely a careless cog in the machinery of production, and an equally careless consumer. Producing at a profit for other races, and consuming at a profit for other races. HERE IS THE CRUX. The Negro is carelessly allowing himself to be squeezed out of active competition in all industry and business through his careless methods and careless introspection. The Negro is absolutely careless in politics. He carelessly chooses his candidate, carelessly spends his vote, carelessly considers what he gets for supporting individuals, carelessly sells his suffrage, and carelessly allows himself to be hypnotized by Republican Magicians. The voting strength of the Negro has been so carelessly applied to the ship of state that it drifts aimlessly upon the seas of autocracy and capitalism. The Negro, of course, was squeezed out of the ship because he was too careless to get on deck before the gang plank was drawn. The carelessness of the Negro in politics has resulted in technical disfranchise-ment and political snobbery all over the United States. The Negro is careless in Society. We have allowed our property interests to run down and depreciate, and our neighborhoods to be contaminated by criminal carelessness. We have so misregulated our conduct in public places, and even in private life that for just cause we have become offensive to more careful citizens of other skin. We have allowed convention and ceremony in society to outweigh facts and figures. We have in society the abnormal and careless desire for new sensations and creations that forces us into unhealthy avenues for their realization. The cabaret and dance hall proves this contention. We have no social distinctions in evidence. We have carelessly allowed ourselves to become alike in ambition, color and creed—the world in turn saying that we all are inferior and objectionable. In industry, it is absolutely necessary that the Negro absorb both by observation and study the modern methods of DOING THINGS. The great mass of Negroes even of the laboring world must make their labor a thing of interest and real service and not merely a matter of course. This can be accomplished by applied thought and careful consideration of Great preparations are being made by the general committee of U. B. F. & S. M. Carey, presiding elder of the Chicago District, will be elected as bishop at St. Louis in May. Dr. Carey has done much good for the A. M. E. church connection. Mrs. Grace Busby, niece of Mrs. Harriet Spartin, spent much time during the week at the bed side of her aunt who has been quite ill. Mrs. Busby reports Mrs. Pharim improving. The mid-winter session of the Michigan Conference of the A. M. E. Zion church convened during the week at Walter's A. M. E. Zion church, 380c Dearborn St., Bishop George L. Blackwell, presiding bishop was present as were many other distinguished visitors. The Pyramid Building and Loan Association gave its annual reception at the Y. M. C. Wedding to take place early in May. AMATEUR MINSTRELS GREAT SUCCESS The Amateur Minstrel gave their Annual affair Monday night at the 8th Regiment Armory to a crowded house. There has perhaps never been a larger crowd in the Armory than on this paticular occasion. The Black face Comedians, Dudes and Singers thoroughly entertained the crowd and Mr. Dunlap as Interlocutor was pleasing as usual. The affair was very much of a success numerically and THE CHICAGO WHIP for the sole purpose of keeping the Negro down. Secession, in order that they might be immune from external interference; The Ku Klux Klan, in order to intimidate the colored man and eliminate his desire for self-determination; Lynching, in order to keep him in a state of physical fear, and thereby lessen his concentration on economics, education, and politics. She has tried, and has to some extent been successful in being condoned for these atrocious injustices by sawing to the rest of civilization: "These practices are necessary for the protection of the white woman's virtue." During the last five years, however, the Negro press has slowly but surely exposed the fallacy of these nefarious, baseless, excuses. The South stands condemned before the better conscience of the civilized world today. THE SOUTH'S LATEST ROLE is that of Negro Press Censor. Her latest, bitterest, and most virulent attack, has been waged to exclude the circulation of Negro newspapers and magazines. Postmaster-General Burleson, a bourbon southerner denied the Crisis access to the mails for one month. The Messenger received the same treatment. The Chicago Whip and the Chicago Defender are today barred from circulation in certain towns of certain Southern states. The excuse offered in palliation of this latest offense against freedom of speech, a constitutional guarantee, is that these publications create racial antagonism and stir up domestic strife. THE TRUTH, however, is that THEY AWAKEN THE NEGRO TO HIS ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POWER. With a barrage of information they agitate him to intelligent assertion of this power. They give him a NEW VISION. They render him IMMUNE FROM EXPLOITATION. They also teach the white laborer, how, with criminal cleverness, he has been pitched against the Negro workman, whose interest, in the last analysis, are identical with his. In fact, these publications have blazed the trail either for a new and better state of affairs, or no state of affairs at all. It is an admitted weakness on the part of the white south to TRY to curb them. It is cowardly on the part of the Negro leaders of the South not to protest vigorously against any attempt to prevent their circulation. The South will find this new role much harder to star in than previous ones. She might as well bid adieu to the old Southren Aristocracy and all of its kindred social, political, and economic organizations, whose existence depends upon the exploitation of Negro votes and Negro labor. Too omuch credit cannot be given to Negro editors, especially those who are classified as radicals. They are constantly between two fires — first, from the ignorant, fearful, old-school Negro on the one hand, and the designing, prejudiced white man on the other. The college bred Negro who has entered the journalistic field with a thorough knowledge of its slender financial returns should be especially encouraged, because they are prepared to secure higher incomes from other professions. The ultimate emancipation of the race depends upon them. The Negro newspaper should not be stopped. IT WILL NOT BE HUSHED. It MUST LIVE to make this new role the LAST THE SOUTH WILL EVER PLAY to the detriment of the Negro. Mrs. Maria Miller Drake, contralto student of Mr. Clemens A. Roberston had been arrested and placed in jail for interfering in a fight in behalf of a small colored boy who was being beaten by three white ruffians. Robinson's interference was so effective that the three white boys whom he deterred from murdering the colored lad are said to be at the point of death. After being taken from the jail Robertson was shot to death and then dragged through the streets to the scene of the hanging, accompanied by a great throng of citizens who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the incident. This record figure was set today by a jury before Judge Donnelly in the Supreme Court. The award was to Miss Florence D. Rooney as damages for the fracture of her leg by an automobile. Taking this award of $40,000 as basis for a general increase of 33 per cent up the line, a woman is now worth about $460,000, according to verdicts during the last few years, which fixed the following amounts: Hair, $20,000; nose $15,000; eyes, $20,000; broken heart, $250,000; arms, $85,000 legs, $80,000. Some I have seen should be valued as Frog Legs, 40c a dozen, others as valuable as the above. Langford Still a Kid By Ed W. Smith Speaking of the octogenarians of the boxing ring, an idea suggested by the fact that Jack Britton is boxing this week in Kenosha, how about this wonderful old chap called Langford. Saw Sam in an exhibition the other night with a sprightly young fellow who has antibiotics to become middleweight champion and this sterling black fellow comported himself in such a manner that youth and vigor were suggested in every move that he made. He's only a matter of some 37 or 38 years of age, but he's generally regarded as an old man. That's because he has been before the public so long that the memory of the present day fight fan scarcely spans the distance. "Sam Langford, that old fellow . . ." you naturally say when his name is suggested. Well, if you pick him up for an old spay you're in for all of New York City and all editors of Socialist propaganda publications. In the call for the convention inscribed in The Emancipator, the Socialist weekly edited by Randolph, Owen and Domingo, it is asserted that "many N. A. A. C. P. leaders respond favorably." Those who issued the call for the convention propose to form a new organization more radical than any now in existence. "The methods for achieving the objects of this new organization," says the call, will be new to Negro organizations, and, we believe, more effective and quicker." The coming conventionists seem to have changed their attitude of harsh and angry criticism toward the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Instead they now say: "While the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will be the only similar organization in the country, it is not our intention to enter into captions or vituperative criticism of it and its work, but rather to take up where they have leave off, on the one hand, and to begin where they have never begun, on the other. Special articles will follow in the succeeding issues explaining the difficulties by which the N. A. A. C. P. is hampered and why it cannot function freely for the advancement of colored people. "We wish to say, however that we have never known of any corruption in the handling of funds on the part of the N. A. A. C. P., nor has there been pronounced ignorance, if error or mistake, in its leadership." It is not yet known whether the N. A. A. C. P. intends to join forces with the six Sociabists; but the outlook for such an alliance does not appear to be particularly rosy, as the members who have been approached generally agreed in the opinion that this was an admirable attempt to split that organization. S. S. YARMOUTH NOT OWNED BY BLACK STAR LINE New York News Editor Prints Sensational Story New York, April 1. The Steamship "Yarmouth" of the Black Star Line is not owned by the Universal Negro Improvement Association according to a sensational story printed last week in the New York News, but by a white Canadian Steamship Company. The "News" editor declares he became suspicious when the ship was not christened "Frederick Douglas", as planned, and he was led to ascertain the fact from the British Consulate. The steamer is now said to be chartered but not owned by the colored company. ORTS By " The Przie Bone Headed Play in Last Ball The Sporting Event of The Przie Bone Headed The Season Brought Play in Last Ball ABBY STREET was interested in the report that Dave Altizer would manage a minor league team this year. "I hope," said Street. "he doesn't let any of his players pull off any plays like that one he made when he and I were with Washington. I suppose you have heard of it, but here it is again: We were playing the St. Louis Browns and they had us beat 3 to 2 and two out in our last half of the ninth inning. We had runners on second and third and the count was two and three on Altizer. The next strike was right over and Umpire Jack Sheridan called it. "But the ball whizzed out of Hack Spencer's mitt and bounded against the grand stand and kept on bounding when the slow moving Spencer clashed after it. The runners from third and second came racing over the plate, and what was Altizer doing?" "I'll tell you. He was standing there at the plate arguing with Sheridan that it ought to have been the fourth ball instead of a strike, and while he stood and argued Spencer finally got the ball and fired it to first base. It made the last out of the game and Dave's failure to run cost us those two runs and a game. "And then they talk about Merkle." added Street, with a grimace. To refreshen your memory, Gaby Street was the first man to catch a baseball dropped from the Washington monument, Washington D. C., 555 feet. Scientists claimed that it was impossible to catch a ball dropped from that height. Later Billy Sullivan of the White Sox Club caught three one cloudy afternoon, and I dropped the balls. In a few years the colored people will have surrounded the University of Chicago unless this organization does something to stop it." Williams asserted that there were five real estate dealers in the Hyde Park district who had refused to adhere to the Hyde Park Property Owners' Ass'n plan of evicting all colored tenants from that district. Colored Girl Demoted. The Prominent Drug Store, located at 35th and State Sts., controlled by the Walgreen Syndicate, has supplanted young colored woman who was formerly Cashier with a Caucasian gentleman of foreign appearance. It is reported the gentleman is receiving a fancy salary for recording the purchases and ringing up the cash from the enormous colored patronage. Displaces Colored Patrona. Many complaints have been registered in the offices of the Chicago Whip against this indignity. General expressions are to the effect that colored patronage should be appreciated and rewarded by employing colored people. It is said that one Greenberg, who has interest in the firm used his influence to secure the change. This gentleman also has moved into a fancy residential section far away from all "objection-ables" who spend their money in the palatial drug store. This method of action according to reports will estrange the business relationship between white and colored people on the South Side. The mayor spoke about the different phases of the Traction Ordinance and something about 100 per cent Americanism. Rev. Williams gave a wonderful, logical and coherent address on the vital political issues of the day. Augustus L. Williams Makes Manly Appeal to Voters On next Tuesday, April 13th 1920 you will have the opportunity to vote for a colored man to represent you in the great Republican National Convention which convenes in Chicago on June 8th, 1920 to nominate a man for President of the United States. We believe you are going to be very cautious and discreet and of the two men aspiring for the honor you are going to select the one whose public record and life is unquestionable; the Man who has always stood for the inalienable rights of the colored American; the man who has never double-crossed or sold out his race or his party. The man who has a record that is second to none in battling for his race, legally and otherwise in the recent race riots, and if so, you are going to vote for Augustus L. Williams for Delegate to the National Republican Convention, for he is the only one of the two colored men running that has such a record. The record of his opponent, Oscar Depriest you know too well for us to make mention of it here, suffice to say he, Oscar Depriest, has not as yet submitted you his platform nor his public record yet he expects to be elected upon the popularity of a white man, George F. Harding who lives in the 6th Ward and is now running as a Delegate in a District where he does not live through the influence and appeal made to him by the Harmony Crowd consisting of Depriest, Wright, Anderson and Jackson. A vote for Williams as delegate for National Convention is a vote for good government as opposed to bossism and hand picked candidates. Experience enables one to under stand, but unfortunately it also makes stale so many otherwise pleasant situations and incidents in life. WANTED AT ONCE Farmers-Doctors-Lawyers-Dentists. Mrs. Dixon immediately came to Chicago and has tried every method to locate her missing son, believing that robbery was the cause of the disappearance as Dixon was a home loving person and not wont to remain away without giving some word as to his whereabouts. The police have been informed and every station and hospital is being searched for the missing young man. Dixon's disappearance to date is a complete mystery. A WHIP reporter has been assigned to the case and is exhausting all sources of information in the effort to locate the missing student. Death Cheats Noose of Hangman Dublin, Ga., April 6th. — Herbert Cummings, colored, sentenced to be hung for the alleged murder of a white soldier, died in the death cell this morning after an illness of several weeks. Cummings was convicted of murder following a series of racial disturbances here last fall which resulted from the overbearing demeanor of white soldiers returning from France. It was claimed that the kindness shown colored men by the French women rankled in the breasts of many returned white soldiers, who being unable to convert the French to their way of thinking, swore vengeance when once back in America, hence the race riots in one of which the white soldier was killed. It is claimed that the death of Cummings is directly traceable to the criminal neglect of jailer Jim Thomas, who allowed Cummings to go unfed for several days at a time, and who failed to see that the cell was kept in a sanitary condition. It is also claimed that during the coldest days of an unusually bitter winter, Cummings was not furnished warm clothing. Hoyne Passes Buck Again When a delegation from the Chicago Church Federation waited on State's Attorney Hoyne last week to protest the bomb throwing crusade which has been launched against the colored people of Chicago, Prosecutor Hoyne tossed the buck back to the Chicago Police Department, which has been busily engaged in tossing the buck to the Prosecutor few moments later they heard quick sharp words of anger followed by pistol shots. Rushing into the room, they found Mrs. Anderson, lying dead across the bed with bullet wounds through her head and side. Anderson was lying on the bed with a hole just beneath his heart. Mrs. Anderson, formerly a Miss Blackburn of St. Paul, Minn., was 25 years old, and employed as a stenographer by the Bruseax, Detective Agency. Maurice Anderson, formerly of Springfield, O., was 35 years of age and worked at Sears, Roebuck and Co. They leave a boy two years old. Leaves Letter As Mute Witness. The first chapter of the double tragedy was found scrawled rudely on Sears, Roebuck Co. shipping checks, and depicts the mental state of the slayer. It reads as follows: "To see the world as I do one would be true in saying that I am a pessimist but still my life is real, just like any other person and for not worth living. The world is against me and I want to impress the fact, that includes my relations as well as my wife. No one seems to consider my health which is very poor and would make any person discouraged, and again I have always worked for a living such as it was, but never did I have a real job as I was capable of holding any ordinary life work. At this writing I can't help thinking of my dear little boy, contemplating this self-murder and to think of him each time I write, Oh, how I would like to foget him until I have done the task, makes scalding hot tears flow down my face. I only wish he would take some serious disease and die for I haven't the heart to take such a precious life — then II could die without a struggle." Woman had Received Warning. Mrs. Lottie Galloway, 5187 Wabash avenue, a sister to Mrs. Anderson was present at the scene of the murder and had warned the slain woman repeatedly to stay away from her husband, who is said to have threatened her several times. Anderson is not expected to recover. BUYS BOOZE AT $3 a PINT: THEN HE SELLS IT AT $8. ST LOUIS, M., April 3.—Federal officials today began an investigation into the alleged misuse of prescriptions to obtain whiskey, following the arrest of Edmund Phelps, colored, yesterday. Phelps, according to prohibition enforcement officers, admitted he had procured twenty-three pints of the forbidden liquor on prescriptions at a drug store for $3 a pint and sold them at $8. The Negro is absolutely carless in industry. The carelessness of the Negro in politics has resulted in technical disfranchisement and political snobbery all over the United States. In industry, it is absolutely necessary that the Negro absorb both by observation and study the modern methods of DCING THINGS. The great mass of Negroes even of the laboring world must make their labor a thing of interest and real service and not merely a matter of course. This can be accomplished by applied thought and careful consideration of Jack Johnson at Border To Fight Fulton Li'l Athur Engaged by Syndicate for Tia Juana Go; After Dempsey and Carpentier. Mexicala, Mexico, April 1.—Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion of the world, has started "beating back." "I am under contract with a big American fight syndicate today which calls for three fights, the final one for the championship," Johnson declared today. "I am going to come back, not only in the fight world, but with the government of the United States. After my first fight, which will be with Fred Fulton, I am going to return to Chicago, give myself up and fight for proof of my innocence in the new trial that was granted me when I acted foolishly and ran away." Mum as to Syndicate. That pretty well epitomizes the big black man's plans today as he walked aimlessly around this little Mexican town within the shadow of Old Glory and its courts of law, from which he fled nearly half a dozen years ago. Jack refused to name the men forming the syndicate which has him signed, but it has gold and plenty of it to further its plans, he says. Johnson is en route with his white wife and two servants to Tia Juana, Mexico, across from San Diego. It is in that Mexican town where his first fight of importance will be staged since his Waterloo at Havana, if his plans do not go awry. "I was asked to come to Tia Juana by this syndicate," Johnson advised. "Its plans are already pretty well along, and I believe negotiations already have been opened with Fulton to fight me at Tiu Juana at an early date." Sends for Sparring Partner. "I sent a man to San Francisco and Los Angeles today to gather up a sparring partner and a training staff. I will go to Tia Juana Sunday or Monday to begin training. No man on earth can beat me when I want to fight. "Willard was never a fighter. He was just a big, jolly fellow. Why, I had a dickens of a time flopping in that fight. I was supposed to go in the tenth, but I couldn't find a chance, and when I did flop on that hot canvas it burned me so bad I could hardly stay down long enough to take the count. "Cazpentier? He worked with the French boy lots times. The first mental affairs throughout the world. The folly of the north in its endeavor in reconstruction after the Civil War, to place the southern whites under the sway of the negroes, is forcibly pointed out. It was an attempt to achieve the impossible. It is forcibly shown that the negro, so far from being a political asset, is a liability to the Republican party in Tennessee. While 99 per cent of the negro vote may be classed as Republican, paradoxical as it may seem, the strength of the Republican party lies in the counties having the largest proportion of whites, while the counties having the greatest negro population form the bulwark of the Democratic party. There are 15 counties in Tennessee having a heavy negro population; and these counties in 1914 gave Rye a majority over Hooper of 24,678, which was 3,689 more than Rye's majority in the entire state; or stated in other words, a Democratic governor defeated his Republican opponent by majorities in counties having the largest negro population, Mr. Farley says: "Ben W. Hooper, a Republican, was twice elected governor of Tennessee by as pure Anglo-Saxon voters in West Tennessee and Middle Tennessee as well as East Tennessee, as any man was ever elected to any office at any time since this republic was established He was defeated for governor the third time he was a candidate by Thomas C. Rye through the "aid" of the negroes to the Democratic party." It is pointed out that while the malatoes are constantly demanding recognition in inflammatory speeches and articles, still in point of fact, the rank and file of the blacks think little and care less about voting, and in fact are quite willing to leave that governmental function to the whites. But even if the negro vote is suppressed in the south, which is not true, still there are in the United States nine million white aliens, mostly in the north; and as members of Congress are elected on the basis of more population these aliens are represented in Congress by northern men, which is a great injustice to the South, and to Americans. Mr. Farley also points out that the name New England, the ancient home of the Puritan, is now a misnomer, because of the removal of the native born and the influx of alien peoples; for only 40.3 per cent of the white population in 1910 in New England were native whites of native parentage. He contrasts this situation with what he denomines "Saxland", embracing Virginia, North Carolina. This space reserved for BERT'S BOOTERY 3433 South State Street Agency for THE Bates SHOE Advertise in the "Chicago Whip" ligence. A glance into the past reveals a train of methods used for the sole purpose of keeping the Negro down. It MUST LIVE to make this new role the LAST THE SOUTH WILL EVER PLAY to the detriment of the Negro. found, though officers searched in all directions. Guard Sandifer with a detail of men were handling the "wash day" work at the camp. The guard's gun was convenient and he was carrying a pistol also. Suddenly Moore overpowered him and surrendered the pistol after unloading the shotgun and rendering it useless. He then forced the filling of the shackles as the guard looked helplessly can. Only a few men were at the camp and none of the others made an effort to escape. In fast, one of the trusties went to the main gang and reported the escape. Moore, it will be, remembered, was convicted on the charge of being an accessory in the murder of Policecump Pennington, at Sharon, something over a year ago. He and his brother, John, were implicated in the crime, but the jury found that Frank was the accessory and the court gave him 10 years at hard labor. The brother has never been captured. During the influenza epidemic Moore was one of the convicts attacked by the disease, and spent several weeks in the emergency hospital here. While down with the "fli" he was docile and well behaved and worked up much sympathy among the women who were administering to the needs of the suffering man, some even wanting to petition his pardon. He is said to be a tough character and as he is armed with the weapon taken from the guard, it is expected that he will show fight before permitting the arm of the law to clutch him again. His partner in the getaway is serving THE CHICAGO WHIP in all a short sentence for a minor offense. Why he should see fit to take Crockett with him and allow the other convicts to remain is something of a mystery to the officials. THREE COLORED WOMEN HELD IN SLAVERY. Chattanooga, Tenn.-Charging that peonage and involuntary servitude, similar to days of slavery in the South, still exist in certain sections of Georgia, three suits for $10,000 each were filed here today against John Dunnaway as agent of A. P. Dunnaway, prominent cotton planters of Lexington, Ga. The complainants are Mary Cheely Telfry Jackson and Jearl Jackson, and former residents of Chattanooga, who were taken to Glethorpe county, Ga., some time ago to answer minor charges. An affidavit made by Mrs. Lulu Smith, mother of Mrs. Jackson, stated that she, was fined $100 in Oglethorpe county several years ago and that A. P. Dunnaway paid her fine after she had agreed to work for two years on his plantation. After the expiration of the two years, according to the affidavit, Mrs. Smith was arrested and compelled to labor two more years on the Dunnaway plantation. The woman says that she finally made her escape from the plantation and went to Milledgeville, Ga., where she secured the Jacksons and brought them to Chattanooga. Robberson had been arrested and placed in jail for interfering in a fight in behalf of a small colored boy who was being beaten by three white ruffians. Robinson's inference was so effective that the three white boys whom he deterred from murdering the colored lad are said to be at the point of death. After being taken from the jail Robertson was shot to death and then dragged through the streets to the scene of the hanginig, accompanied by a great throng of citizens who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the incident. It is said that the resistance offered the mob by the sheriff was so weak as to amount to acquiescence. In the call for the convention inserted in The Emancipator, the Socialist weekly edited by Randolph, Owen and Domingo, it is asserted that "many N. A. A. C. P. leaders respond favorably." Those who issued the call for the convention propose to form a new organization more radical than any now in existence. "The methods for achieving the objects of this new organization," says the call, will be new to Negro organizations, and, we believe, more effective and quicker." The coming conventionists seem to have changed their attitude of harsh and angry criticism toward the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Instead they now say: "While the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will be the only similar organization in the country, it is not our intention to enter into captions or vituperative criticism of it and its work, but rather to take up where they leave off, on the one hand, and to begin where they have never begun, on the other. Special articles will follow in the succeeding issues explaining the difficulties by which the N. A. A. C. P. is hampered and why it cannot function freely for the advancement of colored people. "We wish to say, however that we have never known of any corruption in the handling of funds on the por of the N. A. A. C. P., nor has there been pronounced ignorance, if error or mistake, in its leadership." It is not yet known whether the N. A. A. C. P. intends to join forces with the six Socialists; but the outlook for such an alliance does not appear to be particularly rosy, as the members who have been approached generally agreed in the opinion that this was an adult attempt to split that organization. Walgreen's Drug Store Hires White Cashier The Prominent Drug Store, located at 35th and State Sts., controlled by the Walgreen Syndicate, has supplanted young colored woman who was formerly Cashier with a Caucasian gentleman of foreign appearance. It is reported the gentleman is receiving a fancy salary for recording the purchases and ringing up the cash from the enormous colored patronage. Displaces Colored Patrons. Many complaints have been registered in the offices of the Chicago Whip against this indignity. General expressions are to the effect that colored patronage should be appreciated and rewarded by employing colored people. It is said that one Greenberg, who has interest in the firm used his influence to secure the change. This gentleman also has moved into a fancy residential section far away from all "objectionables" who spend their money in the palatial drug store. This method of action according to reports will estrange the business relationship between white and colored people on the South Side. It is hoped the matter will be adjusted from a period of fairness and equity to all concerned. COLORED PEOPLE CONGRESSMAN George L. Vaughn Indorsed at Meeting of Citizens' Liberty League. Williams Makes Manly Appeal to Voters On next Tuesday, April 13th 1920, you will have the opportunity to vote for a colored man to represent you in the great Republican National Convention which convenes in Chicago on June 8th, 1920 to nominate a man for President of the United States. The record of his opponent, Oscar Depriest you know too well for us to make mention of it here, suffice to say he, Oscar Depriest, has not as yet submitted you his platform nor his public record, yet he expects to be elected upon the popularity of a white man, George F. Experience enables one to understand, but unfortunately it also makes stale so many otherwise pleasant situations and incidents in life. 1920 Model Warranted $295 to introduce one suitcase. Mrs. Anderson, formerly a Miss Blackburn of St. Paul, Minn., was 25 years old, and employed as a stenographer by the Bruseax, Detective Agency. At this writing I can't help thinking of my dear little boy, contemplating this self-murder and to think of him each time I write. Oh, how I would like to fooget him until I have done the task, makes scalding hot tails flow down my face. I only wish he would take some serious disease and die for I haven't the heart to take such a precious life — then II could die without a struggle." Woman Had Problems Hunt had Received Warning. It was claimed that the kindness shown colored men by the French women ranked in the breasts of many returned white soldiers, who, being unable to convert the French to their way of thinking, swore vengeance when once back in America, hence the race riots in one of which the white soldier was killed. Prisoner's Health Neglected. We have riled the Kaiser, the Mikado, the Czar, the President, King Barleycorn and King Prejudice. These Autocratic Rulers have waxed and waned. The tirade of abuse and hatred has been successful in putting these objectionable characters into oblivion. We are anxious to know when the attack will be launched upon the Arch Enemy of Mankind, the captain of Human Souls and the shaper of men's destinies? When will King Money be assailed. For bread we must have money, for sleep we must have money, for health we must have money, for death we must have money, for religion we must have money, money must be given to the Soul Savers and even to the Spiritualists, who claims to peer past the grave and behold the sights of the great beyond. Money seems to be the Arch Demagogue of creation, and before it all humanity totters, tumbles and falls. Money has brought us wars, starvation, and strife. Money has brought deceit, infamy and stealth. Money has become truly the curse or humanitie "the Root of all Evil." As We have heard of the traffic in souls and the profiteering urbane or racial bicheility and race degeneracy or racial carelessness? Scientists, anthropologists, and historians have proven that the Negro is not imbecilic or inferior. The Negro is absolutely carless in industry. The carelessness of the Negro in politics has resulted in technical disfranchisement and political snobbery all over the United States. This can be accomplished by applied thought and careful consideration of THE CHICAGO WHIP advantage of the extravangance and gormandizement of fickle people and now hold the latch strings to all the money purses. The Jews too have fallen into evil ways, should we eschew the evanescent things of life, hold to the substancial we will be able to control our own economic destiny and save the futures of unborn generations. While the whole world is cursed with money the negro is in a psychologic position to turn the curse into a blessing and from the palm of Ethiopia mysteries can be wrought. PROFESSIONAL POLITICANS The most disgusting and parasitical character in the American Limelight is the Professional Politician. This individual has defiled the virtue of Democracy, soiled the skirts of Americanism, and sullied the ideals of Government. It is this creature of evil and infamy who has perverted our political system and held it up both as ridiculous and ludicrous. It is indeed surprising to know how many individuals live off the fat of politics. It is surprising to know how many individuals never earn an honest dollar. These unscrupulous Characters are generally smooth tongued, crafty eyed. They always keep in close touch with the Money Kings and have unlimited sources for supply. These individuals always carry a vest pocket edition of voters where they wield uncanny control. They also ferret out the family skeletons of voters and hang blackmail over their heads. Many Politicians Black Jack votes for their bosses. Nothing is too small for these vultures to fly to. The weak and the strong are whirled in the seething Maelstrom of the Professional Politician. Right here in Chicago we find a breeding nest of these venomous creatures. Honest men have no chance to successfully compete in the one great game without using the Stereotyped Methods. These Politicians have wonderful letters of Recommendations to office seekers. They will promise anything for a few dollars. They do sometimes play faithful to office seekers, but they always deceive and exploit the people. They know how to fix judges, bribe politicians and how to break the laws with impunity. They have made honor and truth things of the past and a part of other worlds. The good graces of the people are being taxed to the "Nth degree" and the signs of the times point to a banishment of the Political Pussy Footer. The people are learning the methods of Modern Political Warfare. The control of the voters is gradually slipping from the grasp of these political Judases, who have made our political Government the laughing stock of the whole world. ligence. A glance into the past reveals a train of methods used for the sole purpose of keeping the Negro down. It MUST LIVE to make this new role the LAST THE SOUTH WILL EVER PLAY to the detriment of the Dr. James Casey.
