| The dispatch to the daily news-
‘papers from Washington, D. C., an-
mounce that President McKinley does
mot recognize the republican organi-
sation of South Carolina in his ap-
woiatments to office for that state,
Shut is “giving encouragement to the
mew republican party” in that com-
mmonwealth in. the appointment to
soffice of prominent renegade demo-
rats whosupported him for the pres-
dency in preference to Bryan. A
‘few months ago the Afro-Americans
«of South Carolina captured the state
grepublican organization when they
selected ‘Hon. E. H. Deas chairman of
the state committee and others of its
officials. While we regret this action
sof the president, it does not surprise
us. It has never been the policy of
“the McKinley administration to
arecognize Afro-Americans in control
dn any southern state. Blood seems
to be thicker than water with the
‘present national administration as
‘well as in the case of the Hon. James
4G, Blaine (deceased) when he was “in
@he eadidle”’
(REACHERY TO THE REPUBLI-
CAN PARTY.
‘ {At no time in American politics
‘have intrigue and villainy shown a
amore dastardly hand than in the
ameasures accomplished and the steps
tuken to disfranchise Afro-Americans
fin the south, And it is evident from
‘the very drift of affairs that it is not
only designed to weaken the political
“force of the Afro-American and de-
‘grede him, but if possible to disarm
sand disrupt the national republican
party. Democratic leaders in the
south rely more upon intrigue and
alouble dealing sthan upon ea fair and
@ronest election on the part of the
speople. Hence they incense the popu-
@ar mind with prejudice and antagon-
Ham to the Afro-American and enter
supon plans to eliminate the colored
vote. But with consummate skill and
‘daring they conceive the idea that to
ttake the Negro out of politics they
may gather a sufficient force from all
sections to enable them to hold the
‘supremacy in local and national af-
fairs, There is wonderful motive in
“wll this scheming. They remembe?
how in time of the slave power de-
smocracy ruled and dominated the na-
‘tion. They long for “the good old
times” when the “principal federal of-
fives were held by men from the
south. They remember how they fed
‘and fattened at the public crib. De-
ymocracy was not otherwise skilled
‘than in holding the best federal po-
witions and maintaining the growing
‘power of slavery. Slavery and fed-
‘eral patronage were their chief de-
ppendence while the strong men in the
grorth depended upon their brain and
«sinewy arms in order to maintain
jand build up a powerful government.
Men of the north beheld with dismay
mand alarm the certain tendency to
centralization, which meant southern
‘domination. The slave-holding olig-
farchy was in full power, and it desig-
ated the subordination of one sec-
#tion to the other. It dictated the
‘terms of government at the sacrifice
«of northern interest and northern
honor, and it means dictation now.
‘ver since amnesty and reconstruc-
tion there has been a manifest deter-
‘mination on the part of the south to
Weassert its supremacy. The defend-
ant states having passed laws for the
aMisfranchisement of the Afro-Ameri-
‘ean, Maryland follows suit in depriv-
dng the colored man of the right of
‘suffrage. Emboldened by the exam-
le of other states to steal the state
from the republicans, it has enrolled
itself on the side of fraud and rob-
“bery. Regardless of whatever serv-
ice has been rendered the state under
trepublican rule and the party, ard
jmo matter what proud achievements
Wave been won to the state in the
‘mame of Negro labor and ingenuity,
@% is well understood that a pro-
wgramme was arranged to down the
Afro-American and turn the state
sover to the democracy. The restric-
ion of the colored vote in Maryland
Mars out about 30,000 Negroes and
mbout 15,000 whites, which means a
wepublican loss of about 30,000, as
against a democratic loss of about
30,000, This disfranchisement fol-

come the nominee for the presidency
in 1904. The whole thing is a con-
spiracy against the race and the re-
publican party. If the entire pro-
gramme is carried out and there is
no intervention on the part of con-
gress, other states will follow in line
with Maryland and the democratic
party will find it less difficult to elect
@ president. During the last half of
@ century the republican party has
done nothing that has been accept-
able to the south. It is not possible
for the party to do any acceptable
thing unless it makes a full sur-
render of itself to southern demoe-
racy. One thing is certain, since it is
a fact that the south hates the Afro-
American, it is on account of his de-
votion to republican principles, and
if the south fears the Negro it is for
the same reason. The south may dis-
franchise the Afro-American if it will
and the republican party, a republie-
an president and republican congress
may feel absolutely indifferent about
him, but the time will come when
they will need him.
THE EVIL OF AMERICAN PRAC-
TICE.
Largely in the south the spirit of
easte dominates the better sense of
the whites. The cardinal principle of
justice should constitute the motive
power of every civilized and Christian
people. Instead of this, the sentiment
most prevalent is the disposition to
favor the ruling element against the
poor and the illiterate blacks. Even
among the most cultured there is no
bar to the barbarous assaults so un-
justly made upon helpless victims.
When an Afro-American is unfortu-
nately drawn into a difficulty with
one of the dominant elass, he is fully
sensible to the terrible consequences
that must follow. In a thousand in-
stances he finds it hardly possible to
| eseape severe punishment. He relies
upon his own strong arm to shield
himself in an unequal contest. But
he finds himself overpowered, for at
first his fight begins with only one,
and soon he is confronted with fifty,
then a hundred, and later five hun-
dred, until the whole community is
engaged in a bloody conflict, beating,
bruising and bleeding one poor mis-
erable wretch. Now it comes to this,
that if an Afro-American presumes to
defend himself he is lynched and a
miserable falsehood is hatched up to
conceal the perfidy of the crime.
Thus is our new civilization at the
south blackened with the horrible
deeds of a fiendish and barbarous
age. A poor colored woman was
butchered not long ago in open day-
light on Main street in Memphis, be-
cause she accidentally brushed up
against a white woman, Another
‘was mercilessly choked and thrown
from an electric car because her only
offense was in sitting too near a
white citizen. Some years ago Tom
Moss, Calvin McDowell and Will
Stewart deemed it only right and
just that they should protect their
grocery and merchandise from being
destroyed by ruffians and drunkards.
They believed that they justly merit-
ed the favor and protection of the
best citizens irrespective of races.
But these three men were thrown
into jail, taken out and shot to death
before the full gaze of the very ele-
ment known as the custodians of the
law. And it now follows that when-
ever an Afro-American dares to stand
in defense of justice and fair play,
a hundred men and a whole commun-
ity take a hand in the cowardly act
of beating, mutilating and murdering
him without judge or jury, This is
‘the spirit of caste in the south which
even to-day seeks to crush the man-
hood of the Afro-American. Most
assuredly if the Negro is not the ag-
gressor, if he is not in fault, and if
upon prima facie evidence it is known
that the white man isthe aggressor,
it would be magnanimous on the part
of any onlooker to shield the inno-
cent and the unoffending. It was
only a few days ago in Henry county,
Tenn., that one of the dominant class‘
started out with his gun to hunt
down an Afro-American, but the Ne-
gro hearing of the man in pursuit,
got his gun and joined in a similar
hunt, In this instance it proved a
dangerous undertaking and the Afro-|
American was allowed to pass un-
unharmed. We do not favor violence
and jawlessness of any kind, we
would stand upon the simple law of
right. In contest between white and
colored, Negroes when even in the
majority are anxious to command
the peace, At least, then it would
be magnanimous for our white
brother to stand for justice. :

Jacksonville, Fla, — Attorney J.
Douglass Wetmore is receiving nu-
merous congratulations on his great
victory in a murder case in which he
appeared for the defense at Starke,
an interior town. He is the first
Afro-American to have spoken in the
court house at that place, and cer-
tainly the first lawyer of the race to
have attended court there. His client
was a youth of 18 years, the son of
one of the leading business men of
color of this city. The boy was with
a crowd last November that was hav-
ing such a good time, it resulted in
the death of a policeman, who sough4
to have them be more orderly, A
change of venue was taken to Starke.
This Mr. Wetmore did against the ad-
vice of all concerned and his assist-
ant was one of the leading white at-
torneys of this section of the coun-
try. Starke was looked upon and
had the reputation of being a good
place for mobs and unfairness when-
ever our people were concerned.
Judge R. M. Call, of this cirenit. who
presided at the trial, was very fair in
every way. Attorney Wetmore and
his assoviate counsel, Col. George U.
Walker, made masterly pleas, the lat-
ter’s lasting three hours. The judge’s
charge was clear and fair, resulting
in the jury's returning a verdict of
murder in the first degree with ree-
ommendation for mercy. The pris-
oner was given a life sentence. This
is indeed a great victory for this sec-
tion of the country. Mr. Wetmore
has many friends in Cleveland and
that section of the country, having
been a law student’ at Ann Arbor,

the year 1871 our late oe", Mrs. S. M. Moore, through a fortunate
\ cireumstance, acquired the receipt for OZONO. It was not offered for sale
hor purchase to any extent until 1875, when it was put upon the market and
met with marked success. After a thorough test by the colored people of
that time it was pronounced an honest, legitimate remedy, true to ail that
was claimed for it, and worthy in every respect of the confidence of every
member of the colored race, because they found it to cause the hair to grow
§ long and straight, soft and fine, and as beautiful as an April nee a
\ whenever @ genuine article appears upon the market there are always s
numberof people who imitate and make capital out of the merits of other
\ People’s goods. Seeing our marked success, numerous firms have entered
\ the market, offering hair-growers and hair-straighteners, many of which are
; worthless, causing the to fall out and Sci great damage to the hair

Governor Nash wired Prosecutor Keeler, Wednesday, an imperative order for the testimony of the Ruthven trial. He demanded that it be sent to him not later than Thursday. The governor is angry over this unnecessary delay in the Ruthven case. He has been unable to obtain a copy of the evidence, although he asked for it, two weeks ago. The delay has formed the basis for an application for another reprieve. The governor is anxious to dispose of the case, in order that he may leave May 4 for San Francisco to attend the dedication of the new warship, "Ohio", and says he will dispose of it before May 3, on whatever facts are before him. It was represented to Nash that the stenographers for the defense and the state could not agree on certain testimony, and he asked Judge Ewing, Ruthven's lawyer, and Keeler to get together in making a transcript. The editor of The Gazette at the time warned the governor that what he asked would not be done. The governor has refused the second reprieve asked by Rev. Langford.

THEY DEMAND WARRANTIES.
The Alexander Burning-at-the-Stake Case Brought Up by Our People and They "Mean Business."
Leavenworth, Kan.—The father of Fred Alexander, the Afro-American burned in Leavenworth in January, appeared before County Attorney Harry Michel on the 15th and demanded that he issue warrants for William G. Forbes and other mob leaders. Alexander, the complaining witness, was accompanied by twelve friends, all but two of whom were our people who announced that they were ready to testify for the state against the mob leaders.
When the county attorney asked for time to consider the request for warrants Alexander demanded that they be issued at once, and threatened to notify the state officials unless the county attorney would consent to act. He also demanded on behalf of the witnesses with him the $500 reward offered by the governor for the arrest and conviction of the mob leaders.
Mr. Michel took advantage of a new law giving county attorneys power to examine witnesses under oath on their knowledge of a case or any violation of law, to put the witnesses through a long secret examination as to what they would swear to. This was not concluded, and was resumed Monday.
The witnesses examined so far swear against Forbes, and state they saw him set fire to Fred Alexander. It is said they also mix in the names of a policeman and a city official. A warrant will be issued for Forbes. It is said that Afro-Americans in Topeka are backing the movement to bring the mob leaders to trial, and that an effort will be made to have the trials take place in another county under a change of venue.

THE BEST HE EVER SAW.
Missourian Pronounces on the Farming Possibilities of Western Canada.
Just at present considerable interest is being aroused in the fact that a few new districts (of limited acreage) are being opened out by the Canadian Government in Saskatchewan and Assiniboia (Western Canada), and any information concerning this country is eagerly sought. Mr. W. R. Corser, of Higginsville, Lafayette Co., Mo., was a delegate there during last summer, and writing of his impressions he says:
"I found surprising yields of grain of all descriptions. One farmer I visited threshed of 175 acres:
"600 bushels of wheat from 15 acres,
40 bushels to acre.
"600 bushels of barley from 10 acres.
"I also saw a considerable number of stock. Swine do well and there is no disease amongst them. They are a good source of income to the farmer. The cattle on the range beat anything I ever saw. Fat and ready for beef, fully matured and ripened on the nutritious grasses of the prairie. I am firmly convinced that this country offers better facilities for a poor man than any I have ever seen."
Information concerning these lands can be had from any agent of the government, whose advertisement appears elsewhere.
His Specialty.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THIS?
"I am so nervous, there is not a well inch in my whole body. I am so weak at my stomach and have indigestion horribly, and palpitation of the heart, and I am losing flesh. This headache and backache nearly kills me, and yesterday I nearly had hysterics; there is a weight in the lower part of my bowels bearing down all the time, and pains in my groins and thighs; I cannot sleep, walk, or sit, and I believe I am diseased all over; no one ever suffered as I do." toms, and no woman should allow herself to reach such a perfection of misery when there is absolutely no need of it. The subject of our portrait in this sketch, Mrs. Williams of Englishtown, N.J., has been entirely cured of such illness and misery by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, and the guiding advice of Mrs. Pinkham of Lynn, Mass.
No other medicine has such a record for absolute cures, and no other medicine is "just as good." Women who want a cure should insist upon getting Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound when they ask for it at a store. Anyway, write a letter to Mrs. Pinkham at Lynn, Mass., and tell her all your troubles. Her advice is free.

Children Should Be Taught Thrift.
A savings bank account is a great incentive to thrift in children. If one is begun for the baby, even with a very small sum, and added to through childhood and youth with a certain proportion of the money that otherwise would be spent carelessly and thoughtlessly by the child, there will be a very respectable amount on the credit side of the ledger when the depositor is 18 years old. The habit of self-denial is not the least of the substantial benefits that fellow a wise economy of money.—Ladies' Home Journal.
The Difference:
Little Clarence—Pa, what is the difference between a professional and an amateur?
Mr. Callipers—Why, one does it because he has to, and the other because he doesn't have to.—Puck.
Change of Climate.
This is often necessary for those whose health is undermined, or whose blood is rendered impure by disease or unsanitary conditions. The following letter from Hannah G. Patten, of Cincinnati, Ohio, shows how it was unnecessary in her case. She wrote: "Palmer's Lotion has cured use of an exceedingly annoying and unsightly eruption from which I could obtain no relief, my physicians having recommended a change of climate as the only probable remedy." If your druggist does not have it, send to Solon Palmer, 374 Pearl Street, New York, for samples of Palmer's Lotion and Lotion Soap, which will be sent to you without delay.

The above is the time of the annual meeting of the United Society of Christian Endeavor, at Cincinnati, Ohio. The map shows the principal churches, suburbs, resorts, railroads, street car lines, etc. This souvenir may be obtained from agents of the B. & O. S.-W. Ry., or direct from O. P. McCarty, G. P. Some people call it colic, but most honest, main-spoken people call it "belly-ache" and very properly, for the seat of the trouble is in the bowels, and caused by the violent efforts of the bowels to rid themselves of something which doesn't belong there. Hon. John Williams, County Commissioner, of 517 West Second street, Duluth, Minn., says the following in regard to Peruna: "As a remedy for catarrh I can cheerfully recommend Peruna. I know what it is to suffer from that terrible disease and I feel that it is my duty to speak a good word for the tonic that brought me immediate relief. Peruna cured me of a bad case of catarrh and I know it will cure any other sufferer from that disease."
Miss Mattie L. Guild, President Illinois Young People's Christian Temperance Union, in a recent letter from Chicago, Ill., says:
"I doubt if Peruna has a rival in all the remedies recommended to-day for catarrh of the system. A remedy that will cure catarrh of the stomach will cure the same condition of the mucous membrane anywhere. I have found it the best remedy I have ever tried for catarrh, and believing it worthy my endorsement I gladly accord it." Mrs. Elmer Fleming, orator of Reservoir Council No. 168, Northwestern Legion of Honor, of Minneapolis, Minn., writes from 2535 Polk street, N.E.;
"I have been troubled all my life with catarrh in my head. I took Peruna for about three months, and now think I am permanently cured. I believe that for catarrh in all its forms Peruna is the medicine of the
P
age. It cures when all other remedies fail. I can heartily recommend Peruna as a catarrh remedy."
The spring is the time to treat catarrh. Cold, wet winter weather often retards a cure of catarrh. If a course of Peruna is taken during the early spring months the cure will be prompt and permanent. There can be no failures if Peruna is taken intelligently during the favorable weather of spring.
As a systemic catarrh remedy Peruna eradicates catarrh from the system wherever it may be located. It cures catarrh of the stomach or bowels with the same certainty as catarrh of the head.
If, you do not derive prompt and satisfactory results from the use of Peruna, write at once to Dr. Hartman, giving a full statement of your case and he will be pleased to give you his valuable advice gratis. Address Dr. Hartman, President of The Hartman Sanitarium, Columbus, Ohio.

DR. SHEA.
MARVELOUS MEDIUM.
Gives the names of dead and living friends tells who and when you will marry, also of business, journeys, lawsuits, absent friends, health or anything you wish to know, no matter what it is. He can call up your spirit friends and show them to you. Can make them rap all around the room. He asks no questions; ask us to write the names for him. Don't try to pump you in impatient but tells you right off. He is thoroughly endorsed by leading Spiritualists everywhere; received from them a gold medal and special license to practice his wonderful powers; credentials no one else can show; can give thousands of references to both white and colored patrons. Twenty-five years practice—seven in Brooklyn—will show you that he can do all he tells of. Can tell you what business is best for you and where. Can tell you how to win speedy marriage with one you love. How to be successful in all you doings, in short what is best to do. Her succeeds when all others fail: a positive help and satisfaction or no help. Call us. Call us lucky to consult this refined Christian gentleness. He has a medicine that will cure drunkenness; can be given patients not knowing it. Thou-sands through him are now.
Rich, Happy and Successful in all their undertakings, while those who neglect his advice are still laboring against power and influence. His edge of chemistry he can impart to you a secret that will overcome your enemies and win you friends. His aid and advice have often been solicited: the result has always been the securing of speedy and happy marriage and all your wishes. In love affairs he never fails. His secret of winning the affections of the opposite sex.
It is the curse of Spiritualism that in all large cities there are a class of men and women who claim powers they do not possess. They have neither gifts, credentials nor references. Surely the colored people are not so wanting in sense as to throw their time and money away on such. DR SHEA refers to the Hon. Charles Miller, capitalist, 481 Atlantic avenue; the Hon. Wm. Demonde archie, 482 Cleveland av. and Arthur. Sowell, ship builder, South Brooklyn. All have known him for the past seven years. He gives a free test of his power to all. The Doctor has practiced five years in New Orleans, St. Louis, Memphis and Louisville; understands thoroughly the diseases, spells or influences the race is subject to. He is now and always has been a true friend to the colored people and always had a large patronage from them.
"BROOKLYN, June 3, 1892.--This is my证 certify I came to New York from Albany. I was a stranger in a strange city out of work and out of money. I had no-luck in anything I undertook. What to do I did not know. A friend advised me to go and see Dr. Shea. I did; he told me the cause of all my trouble; he took me in and treated me like a brother. Through him I got a good position that very week. I had been to others; they took my money and did me no good. I bless the day I did. I did and I advised all in bad luck, sick or in trouble, to go to him atonce. Sinceerely, ALBERT AYERS, 2937 Atlantic avenue."
"BROOKLYN, Aug. 15, 1891.--This is to certify that my husband had gone away and been absent two years. I mourned for him nigh and day. I gave him up as dead. Hearing of the wonderful things DR. SHEA was doing, I resolved to consult him. He told me my husband was alive and well and where he was; told me he would come home and when. To my joy all of it came true. He is home now; came back like one from the dead. I also wish to say that this month I lost the sum of $2.40 I am a poor woman and I was most insane. I went to DR. SHEA and he told me I would find my money and to my intense joy I did find it as he told me. I thank God there is a man so gifted in our midst that can help people and I am so Sincerely Mrs. MARY MILLER, South Plainland, New Jersey. DR. SHEA can show the
