A GRI INDUS
A GREAT AFTER THE WAR INDUSTRIAL OPPORTUNITY
Now that the war is over and labor is adjusting itself to peace conditions, the question arises as to whether Negroes are going to continue to have the same opportunities which they had, while the war was on, to find employment in all sorts of occupants. The war gave the Negroes the greatest economic opportunities they have since their emancipation. The nation in general, and capital in particular, came to have a greater appreciation of their value as an economic asset. The question now confronting them is, will these exceptional opportunities continue?
An important after war industri-
al opportunity, which is being afforded Negroes, is through the Chickasaw Ship building Plant at Mobile, Alabama. This plant is operated by the same officers as the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, both companies being subsidiaries of the United States Steel Corporation and have made a vital role in the resources and capital which this corporation controls. In the establishment of the Chickasaw plant many millions dollars are being expended. It is the purpose of this company to use a very large proportion of Negroes, probably some five thousand on ropes in the permanent work of building ships. The Chickasaw plant is not a War Baby, that will lose when exigencies of the war situation have 'passed, but the Cramp's Shop Yard and the Newport News ship-building Company, it is permanently built ships to go upon the seas.
The Chickasaw Shipbuilding Company affords a great After War Opportunity for Negroes. It is a great opportunity not only because of the number of Negroes to be employed,

but also as to the lines of work that are to be open to them. They are not to be confined to unskilled labor, but are to be given opportunity to enter every line of work that the plant affords. This company is to build the new kind of ships, those constructed out of fabricated steel. The plates for these ships are to be manufactured in the plate shops at Fairfield, a surburb of Birmingham, Ala. If the Negroes make good, the two plants, Fairfield and Chickasaw, will employ a total of some five thousand on more of them. It is assumed that Negro labor is going to make good.

The Merchants bank is a private
institution owned by a real estate
dealer. It was robbed about two
days ago, of about £1,000.
The police have identified the automobile as the machine used by three officers in the office of the Standard Oil Company, 3302 Prairie avenue, and robbed the police station at 3400 south LaSalle street at 3529 a.m. today. The same car was seen by Detectives Hocan and Kennedy at 3600 south LaSalle street at 3529 a.m. today. In telling of the hold up, Nichols prized Miss Philips for her coiness in the face of danger. In the face of danger, the police bandit, by the three Negro bandit, who robbed the Merchants band today, was recovered by the 38th Street police station at 3529 South 38th Street. Cottage Grove avenue, where it has been abandoned. The automobile was stolen last night through the door of the Prairie avenue, and the license tags removed. The car had a bullet hole through the front window. In a revoiver battle between the Negroes and policemen, following a hoold at 3602 Prairie avenue,

Washington—One of the features
of the last days of this session is a
belated attempt of the Southern
Democrats to condemn a raid on
the White House, Northern members of Congress,
say.
Induce the intention of the
Democrats to get their share while
the getting is good is seen in three
legislative proposals now before the
war price of 30 cents a pound.
1. The $1,000,000,000 wheat bill,
which the Southern members insist
should be amended to have the Gov-

war price of 30 cents a pound.
2. The public buildings bill short-
ly to be paid by the other cost of

appropriation for almost every
Congressional district in the South.

Chairman Fletcher of Florida containing

The Southern Democrats say it is charged, are threatening a vilification against the bill to enable the Government to carry out its guarantee of a $2.25 wheat price unless it be amended to carry the provision for the purchase of the cotton.

In the construction of the plant at Colorado Shaw, The Norm was given opportunity to do skilled work. One of the division Superintendents in carpenter work, was a Colored man, N. W. Goodson, he had sucker him twenty-two foremen and some two hundred and fifty carpenters, who in the construction of houses offered buildings and homes showed their ability. Just how far the Southerners will go with this project and whether they actually will, as threatened, filibuster against the wheat bill is not known, but they have succeeded so far in preventing any sort of regulation of cotton. The Southern members, when cotton was doubling and trebling itself in value during the war, strongly insisted that there ought not to be any limit whatever on the price of cotton and that the grower should get the credit he could for it.

The public buildings bill about to be offered to the House, Chairman Clark says, is a measure to relieve the burden of size is not yet settled, but it will appraise millions of dollars for more than 200 Congressional districts in the United States and only a few Congressional districts in the south. The bill, in preparation, required effort was made some time also by the Northerners on the committee, including two or three Democrats, to prevent the bill from being reported and it was successful. The bill also corrected the bill under the gulose of a measure to relieve unemployment rates, a majority to vote to report a bill.
"COLOR LINE" AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
By the Associated Negro Press.
Washington, D. C. March 8- Harper Lee, author of The Memphis (Knopf) Press, in an extensive article in that paper declares that the matter of the "Color Line" may impel the Locale of Nations. He declares that Australia, Pacific Coastal Africa, and the Southern United States are vitally affected by the proposed aradication of racial distinctions.
The Chickasaw plant was established in the early part of 1918. Among the first work started was a riveting school where Colored men could be trained in ship construction. This was necessary because, in the lower South, steel ship construction had only been going on. There were in this section, practically no workmen skilled in building ships. Excepting the instructors, all in the school are Negroes. In spite of the difficulties of the labor situation and the scarcity of laborers, several hunched and a fourth one is on the ea
construction of steel barges. Three of these barges 140 feet long and 25 feet beam have already been launched and a fourth one is on the way and will soon be ready to go. The work will be done by the handwork of these recently trained Negro ship constructors. An important advantage of this riveting technique is that it pays while being taught, receiving around thirty-six cents per hour. When they become efficient as riveters, they can pay $5.00 to 8.00 per day and in exceptional cases, even more. The following are some of the participants in the ship-building shop to open to Negroes at the Fairfield plate shops and the Chickasaw Shipbuilding plant, when the work at these shops will be anglemiths and anglemiths's strikers and helpers. They will bend and angle frame and staple work for the builders and water-
THE SOUTH AND
THE RETURNED
NEGRO SOLDIER
By the Associated Negro Press.
Birmingham, Ala., March 6—Fewy section of the south is becoming deeply concerned about the attitude of the returned Negro soldiers from France. "Returned Negro Soldiers; some words of Sober Counsel; process to delare; 'It is to be feared that the Negro soldiers will be able to arise in the south between the two races. There is an opinion prevalent among many white people to a greater or less degree that these Colored soldiers have come back with their heads turned; that they believe themselves to be worthy of the greatest consideration in all wars; that they believe it is necessary to insist upon such a consideration and upon recognition in ways they did not urge before their service in the army."
It is argued by Negro leaders in this section that if the white people have that impression, at least they have the correct idea on something that is important. The News proceeds to point out that this is an erroneous impression, and that it is probably true that these black boys who went to France are willing to plod along in the old ways. However, it is all too clear that Negro leaders accept the former positions in life, those of cowardice, cringing and savviness. There is a growing trend down of facts and figures, in short of equal justice. There are black men of whites who are joining with the intelligent Negroes of the South in the plan to make right the law of

NORTH CAROLINA SETS PRECEDENT WORTHY OF EMULATION
CONVICTS AND SENTENCES 16 WHITE MEN FOR ATTEMPT TO TAKE NEGRO FROM JAIL WHILE ALABAMA ACQUITS 18 FOR AGTUAL LYNCHING.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, through its Secretary, R. John R. Shiloh of New York, makes public a letter of commendation sent to Governor Thomas W. Bickett of North Carolina for the action taken by officials of that state in Winston-Salem, Surry County, in securing the conviction and sentence of fifteen of sixteen men indicted for attempting to take Rush High, a Negro, from the jail at Winston-Salem on November 17 and lynch him, the terms ranging from fourteen months to six years. The Association congratulates the officials upon being sent to the state and declares that "the State of North Carolina has an example which may well be emulated by other states in this country in which mob violence and lynching prevail." The Association contrasts the common, lax action of the North Carolina authorities with that of the state in Columbia, Ala., in which all of the men were acquitted although clearly guilty of lynching a Negro in November of last year, and calls attention to the fact that North Carolina punished men for attempting to lynch a Negro and not secure a conviction for an actual lynching. The action which you and the authorities of your state have taken in the past year, you noted that the men punished were not guilty of lynching but rather of the crimes of the trials of three men in is sharp contrast to that of the true lynching, and tried for lynching recently in Tuscumbia, Ala., in which case the men indicted, alas, were not guilty of the action in the mob that lynched a Negro in November of last year, were little more than a fairs. SOLICIT HARDEN BUSINESS
By the Associated Press
New York, March 6- In a recent issue of the New York Post, a full page is devoted to a dictionary of the business of Harlem, where and how they live and what they are doing. One finds that the dictionary is out of the fact that scores and scores of friends that do a national business in Harlem are not available. It is then dried manned by Negroes, and are appealed particularly to the black business community, emphasized by the increased advertising space many of these national papers are taking in the New yorkers.

And other advantage of this industrial opportunity at the Chickawawai Plate shops is that there is no discrimination in wages paid whites and Negroes. The Negro workmen are not discriminated against that white workmen receive for the same kind of work in any word. Negroes are to be given a man's share of the work, and to deed, a great opening for black men with desire to do skilled work and receive the same pay that skilled workmen receive. In many sections of the country black men are doing skilled work for which they are receiving the same pay.

THE WORLD WONDER OIL AND GAS COMPANY OF KANSAS CITY, MO.
Our lease is on the Stephen survey, which is adjing the Hoffman Survey. The holdings of the Maria (1 Company were sold only a few days ago for $3,500,000, which was a part of the Hoffman Survey, and every dollar invested in the M rine Oil Company is now worth $17.50. Our driller, Mr. C. M. Flickenberg, who drilled three wells for us last Spring, in the State of Kansas, is now on the ground in Burkburnett with his drilling machine and will begin drilling our well just as soon as arrangements can be completed.
Our lease is one every dollar invoiced with his drilling.
Our Speech
We are sold share pur value, people, as we want are to be derived now in Texas and sold over one-bank leading men, such Dr. Hurd, Dr. Madam Virginia daily.
Our Presidency of Texas; but we all be sold, and below and mail the office at once we will notify him.
The white rain low in his footsteps their money in oil is just like going there is over one investing in oil, the Texas' Daily life, go to the C listen to the hum way into mother mother earth any one well. Just the your share of it? prejudice in oil. Oil Fields, but we Oklahoma and Kansas and income.
Our Special Offer To Texas People.
We are selling to the public 50,000 Shares of our Stock at $1.00 per share per value, and we have allotted 20,000 of these Shares to Texas people, as we want the Texas people to help share in the large profits that are to be derived from our production. Our President, Mr. J. J. Allen, is now in Texas and has been there for about two weeks, and he has already sold over one-half of the Stock allotted to Texas as quite a few of our leading men, such as Bill McDonald, Rev. A. I. Boone, Rev. E. M. Griggs, Dr. Hird, Dr. Dra. Morgan and Busch, Prof. B. F. Darrell, Prof. Porter, Madam Wiggins have bought in large quantities and others are buying daily.
Our President is now in Duffan, and has planned to tour the state of Texas; but we do not know how far he will get before the Stock will all be sold, and we would advise that you cut out the application blank below and mail to us at once for the amount of stock you want, or write the office at once that you would like to see our president personally, and we will notify him to call upon you.
The white race has succeeded; and if we are to succeed, we must follow in his footsteps. If you don't believe that white people are investing their money in oil, go into Fort Worth, Wichita Falls, or Dallas, Texas. It is just like going to a circus that is only to be in town one day. I'll bet there is over one hundred thousand visitors in those cities daily, who are investing in oil. Again, if you don't believe what I say, just read any of the Texas' Daily papers; and if you want to see the greatest sight of your life, go to the City of Burkburnett, and take a view at the oil fields and listen to the hum of the gas engines and drilling machines pounding their way into mother earth to reach the black liquid gold that flows out of mother earth anywhere from two to four thousand dollars per day from one well. Just think of it. Don't it remarkable? Are you going to get your share of it? If you don't it is your own fault; for there surely no prejudice in oil. Not only have we this very valuable lease in Burkburnett Oil fields, but we also have some valuable holdings in Anderson Co. Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Our stockholders share equally in all properties and income.

Do you wonder why so many people of the white race rise up and down the streets in thirty finest of automobiles and live in the finest of houses, with us as their servants, and all their luxuries of life? It’s because they invest their money. They take a chance. We can do the same, if we will behind our race enterprises and in a Neuro company, where you will get a square deal. SANCREST MEMORIAL LOSS OF CHARITY RESOLUTION CHARACTERISING YEARS OF FATHER-FUL SERVICE.
Dallas, Texas, March 1, 1918.
Nora Lewis has answered her Master's call and she who with her work while ago has amused on beyond us.
The i. threehermes and those who were co-workers with her feel keenly Nora. For her work she was ten years and after these ten years and after these ten years of faithful service she was one of our homebodies She came when our little girl Cinnamon Pamela called her "Cookie." Through these ten years Nov. has been affectionately "Cookie" to every one of her.
To the dear old aunt who survives Nora we send messages of love to her. To the dear mother of her of our affection for Nora. We send to this Mother -custard and friend. To the friends who have lost Nora we speak a comfortable word. Nora tells all her trusts. She loved her friend and she served them decidedly. She taught her daughter left and she was faithful to her charge. We trusted us faithfully and patiently. I can say that in all these years no hard word has ever passed between her and her midsiblings and she loved her. And she lanced cheerfully. She lived up to the command of Jesus. That's what the "Cook" is that her fidelity will live forever. Then, as in this home, Cooked Old Lady is Heaven! He will receive you there and reward you. Loaded with love and reward you will always remember you. Your Friends, Maggie, and Sara and Steve are the kitchen chooses these.

In loving memory of our beloved niece and wife, who departed this life February 23, 1919, at 182 Hall Street.
Whereas, it has pleased the Supreme Ruler to take from abow to abow the Sweet Love of our Sweet Sneed Love, whose soul on a bright and bissal February morn took refuge amid the host in his earthly soul. We know she has gone to a better land, death having relieved her of the earthly soul to its eternal rest. We have these few lines, merely we have a token of our love and devotion, which we shall ever commemorate.
We know she knows best, it was his will, and it must be done. We shall omit; our grief to Him and glorify His word: "All is well."
We wish to thank our many friends who along with us deeply deplored the special floral contributions. We assure them that the keen touch of their sympathy and the keen touch of their sympathy shall forever dwell with the family.

Colored Methodists Taking Interest in "Give a Bale to Centenary" Movement
New Orleans, March 6, 1919.
New Orleans, March 6, 1939.
War gardens will give way to "God's Acreage in the Southern plantation" to be planted there for the Lord on many thousands of Southern plantations. Under the slogan, "Give a Bale to the Centenary," an extra crop will be raised, sold and the money turned into the Methodist, Centenary Fund missions. Such a large group of missionaries. Such a large world wide Methodist movement which is now under way will give it from their regular harvest, must put will into overtaxation of the land, and mustIVATE "God's Acreage." The head of this movement is Bishop Wilbur H. H. Cox, who is the president of the Methodist Episcopal church. Both individuals and churches are premising from one to eight or ten acres of land to be sold up. "What we may expect is shown by the experience of one of the most successful farmers to take a five acre tract to pay its debt. It raised crouch or three acres only to pay the debt of $600 per acre."
Bishop Thirlwell is of the option that God's science should bloom a new crop. He has a heavier crop than the field adjoining, and he will be able to exploit the advantage of the prayers of preacher and congregates, but the church will not be able to put a few added calories into the cultivation, or dump on it jerusalem-like soil. That's little danger of the Lord.
The churches under Blair. Thiield in the New Orleans Area, emeritus of St. Mary's and Texas, have all colored membership and the Centenary ornamentation there is Colored throughout. The leadership and organizational power "I is splendid training in Colored leadership and organizational power." C. Hercera, for instance, of the Webb中学 of House Mission, who graduated of House Mission, who was one of the best in the country. We hope to collect in cash on Easter Sunday enough to pay our bills, and we hope to collect in cash then in the fall there will be another big demonstration when the fruits of "God's Acrease" and the "Bates for the Centenary" are brought in. We aim to elevate the standard of American life where there is need of more education to elevate the standard of Christian civilization to every backward nation on the globe. It is the most ambitious program ever undertaken by the United States in its aspirations and in the complete and tuscan like organization by the United States in its practical realization of the ideal of a Christian world. The money to be raised—$127,000,000 to be paid in five annual contributions of any church. The Methodist Episcopal Church South, are united for this plan of the Centenary based on the belief which shows in detail the needs of every nation along the line of schools, colleges, universities, social centres and other means of ministering of physical, moral and spiritual
Out of Lots great world study, a budget was first up, showing in decimals how to give the maximum efficiency, to give the minimum efficiency, to work at home - in the stumps in the cities, the scarcely distracted subtree of the countryside, South, the Indian reservations and the attention. The other half will go to take advantage of the unique opportunities.
Never before was American Christian leadership ahead no welcome. In India, between acceptance and offers a great field for the church. The war has not only destroyed churches and schools, it meant a great danger to the moral and spiritual development of many nations. In the east the old pridique against Occidental ideas is no more. American movies, American clothes, American music are as welcome in Shikar and on earth. And with these comes a new approachability of the people in India. American music is in religion—Buddism, Animism, Hidulum, are having a desperate struggle. Languages are turning Christianity at one time. The Peruvianus all did sorts of suns to flatten their heads, and everybody knows how the Chinese women bound up their feet to stop the growth. The fashion of patches came from Arabia, probably beginning with the astrological signs, but drifting into concludes like small ships cut from the black cloak worn at the courts of the Louis XIV time the women even went so far as to paste on moles in eyebrows—and now the girls are pulling them out to such mere suggestions you might think eyebrows were vulgar or common.

BAPTIST MINISTERS' ALLIANCE
(V. L. S. Booker)
The Baptist Ministers' Alliance convened its regular weekly meeting Monday, March 3, 11th, at Macdonald Hall, Rev. E. Allanton Wilson, pastor. The Alliance opened with 14 members presiding and vice-president, the Rev Wm. Shaw was elected temporary chairman. Immediately after being sworn in, the Alliance renounced the meeting ready for business. The reports show that from the recent Baptist churches that more than 71,200,000 and 32 persons were involved in the consolidation of the two Alliances were completed and there is only one member still in the organization. Alliances seemed to be satisfied and an excellent spirit of cooperation was the membership of the Alliance. The Alliance was a seeker of the Bible and the Nation, a picture whose very purpose is to create prejudice before it. The chair appointed the following committee to draft autobiographical responses to be presented to city authorities.

WHERE FLAPPER IS UNKNOWN
Life in Japan Seems Largely a Matter of Negations for Both Girls and Women.
In Japan the "dapper" has not arrived. The majority of Japanese young girls never exchange a word with their own adult female, and they gide their own immediate family. There is no masculine audience for young female comedies and there is no masculine eye to admire the little girl. The girls which films such a large part of the frivolous western sister's exciting life. It would seem indeed that life for the young Japanese girl is mainly a girl's life. She is not a East Magazine. She has no real cloth problem. Her dress has been in designed by some mysterious power long before she was born. She is crested at a certain age she shall wear certain colors, which must be changed at certain seasons. Her kimono shall have longer or shorter sleeves. Her skirt shall be no high and of such colors. She has not even to think of how she shall, armene her hair, for the so an mysterious power has decreed her hair should be combed and twisted into a given pattern. As this mysterious power has to be obeyed, a hairdresser has to be employed regularly for the right fixing.
A Japanese girl is scarcely an individual, but is rather part of a plan, and her affinite must correspond to her own needs. She obtained for her, a deny provided, her wardite filled, she has not even to exercise originality in the furnishing of her home. 'The same mysterious porch has deserved how this house shall look.'
