Address of James Whelan Johnson, Filed Secretral National Association Advancement of Colored People, and Filed Secretral National Conference on Lynchage. Monday Evening, May 6. "The impression has been fostered in this country that the lynching of Negroes in the South and the crime of lynching in the South have protected against lynching, southern newspapers have called up officers to lynching, leads to lynching. Such editorial sentiments are intended to foster in the South the idea that rape and the lynching of Negroes in the South seek the relation. charge of fire. In the last five years, 1918, 325 Negroes were lynched in the United States, and only 28 of them were African-American. In 1817, in New York County, the Grand Jury indicted 27 persons for rape in the first degree. This is nine more than in the five year period, which included the total number of charges of alleged attacks of every character upon women. "I ask not only black Americans but white Americans, are you not ashamed of lynching? Do you not want to be ashamed of thinking that this is the only civil country in the world, no, more than a human being may be tortured with hot irons and then burned alive. The nation today is girl, not to lead the country, but to support of the weak against the strong; well. Tell you it can't happen and this outnumberes in its own mind. "A great deal has been said about the atrocities committed during this war, but there are millions, of intelligent Americans who do not know, who are not aware of the ever great atrocities we are committed in this enlightenment, land that would cause envy in the heart of the most benttalked U.S. Hon. The burden of the application is given his vote; but that not many African-Americans who were soldiered will be given the right to vote. The leaders of the pro-programs are the most part made up of men who are old or too scared to fight, and but not the colored about whom the other men are jealous and victim of German knot. It is unconceivable that the men in the question in the men's question, in any measure. The fact the use of the vote is not extra caution, the question of the soldier's vote, but that they should be allowed to no disguise democracy. The men who think the Colored soldier should not vote today, should be kept free from Election yesterday. They best day in court to show them what it was on the battlefield, the soldier, for the best place to have shown it was on the battlefield. They call now to underestimate to sing the Colored man from behind the benches of the hall to fight, bleeck and die. We are braving with the past history to fight, bleeck and die. We are braving with the past history to fight, bleeck and die. that future here in this country, now will show us alike the supreme colors of the sky will be to the great good in the great war. Americans part in the trial war will give it the place in the world to stand to defend the rights of secede nations of people because of their culture or religion, or color or race, but full, full, full. Already and all the things which will be mentioned in it in 1846 are now encountered in every branch of the army and in all the laws of law and other legal principles, before the triumphant man of human justice and equality. The Dallas Earreens read history when he says, not its pity, and, as he says, not its injustice. The future. The effort to make an insecure place for any industries, lawsuits and political elements in the world, that should thus be confirmed to the limits of forgotten attempts to rob LYPHING MUST GO. The agitation now going on more or less throughout the country on the subject of lynching is likely. Lynching must not be. Although short-term measures are being taken to prevent lynching a measure to our country still nevertheless, the inmance still remains. The inmance is spurred rites roughhed today all over the republic. In every quarter nearly and openly about it. It is glittered with the blood of the Afro-American, the blood of the African-American, the Afro-American can be found. When one rides in a white newspaper a protest against lynching be in effect. The rides are not of lawlessness which ends with the rope or the faint. It has no purpose or meaning. The small crime of the almost holy doctrine of separation of the crosses and the saints is not intended to teach the white man, that because he is white, he is supernate, that because he is black, he is colored man, that he is by nature an inferior; and yet unites this preacher in lynching. The act of lynching cannot be stopped. Such are the conditions, which white men have made and under which they can live to this country—the land of the free and the home of the. We submit that the *past* of the white man against his hirsute and masculine nature are victims, can not be stopped by them until they change their behavior. The white man is a humo, but he even if white men fall and refuse to include it. The *e* can be a way for white men to the scaffold to live the right from the scaffold to the right. Secret Agreement to Go to the Aid of France in Any Future War Received With Alarm. BY SNEIL BMITH Washington, April—Much criticism has been directed against President W. E. B. Johnson, the name of his reported williams at Vernalite to plunge to the United States. Britain and France to go to war in the latter in any future war, in direct delitation of the long established and traditional policy of Washing- Not only is this future departure in the direction of participation by the American people in the common war, but it is required as an indication of lack of faith by the President himself in the efficiency in preventing future conflicts. It is also thought to be a concession that, as exemplified the authority of the President, the United States should fight side by side against Germany and might also act so that it would be so personal as to make imperative of the United States' obligation in these cases, especially in dealing in While this construction of the league as amended is not surprising to the Senate, it is quite certain that the intention of the Senate, and the intention of the opponents of the covenant to at all hazards protect American sovereignty and rights, is not any ideal conception which would not be able to withstand the continuing threats of the United States. Japan's ambition to dominate the Pacific and control the trade of Eastern Europe and the United States, is taken as an evidence of this, as is also England's control of a fourth of the territory of the United States, and its desire to dominate the commerce of the entire world in conflict with the interests of all nations in all nations in commercial development; not because the aims of this country are sofaf, but because it The American-British-French prom- sure at Vernalite in the basis of a de- sire on the part of many Democratic leaders, and in secret in spite of the President's oft-repeated declaration in favor of "open covenants openly arrived at" the convention, the session should be conducted in the open, so that all the people may know and understand what it means to be a citizen, and they have the votes to enforce it that this principle shall not go to the wrong end of self-determination of small people. Negro Soldier Clubbed For Asking To Be Served At White Fountain. Atlanta, Ga. May 8—That there is to be show down for "equal treatment" of all prisoners in the race in the event of them not being granted, is more and more apparent from dry to dry. At Atlanta, a returned soldier from France, went into a drug store to make some purchases, on the way to the French embassy, the delibitous surrounding of France, and forging that he was in the late cline of Georgia, stopped at a soda shop, and drank. Fornoting all Biblical admonitions with refrence, "If thine enemy is a soldier, Powell, a white clerk, a beet, but from beneath the counter, and soldier's head, Heene was picked up in unexcible, taken to Grassy Hospital, and later to his quarters at a prison." Heene was arrested for "disorderly conduct." O. Is daily newspaper from Maco telling of the story says: "White this is the first police court case growing directly out of an attack on the part of returnees from the war so far as is known, it has not been passed or jailed for serval wrestlers, railway stations, and other public places in Atlanta, that there is a marked difference in the deportation of the Negro soldiers toward the white race on the part of the Negro soldier as he will prior "against" them and the Negro soldier has come back from abroad." I take this opportunity to encourage knowing a good preacher when they see him. They made no mistake in calling Rev. Neil. In doing so, I do not miss his feet for paddles, nor his arms for wits. F, has just returned from France and is now spending a few days with A. E. F. He is contemplating an extensive The Importance Of Spanish In The Curriculum Of Negro Schools. Head of the Department of Spanish Dallas, Colored High School. I wouldain trouble the readers of the Dallas Express with this article, but he that has noted the signal that I have been using spectacles that have been glazed by the tilted rays of Southern prejudice with a timely and effective response if family in contact. If it is a means of inciting an interest, which at present is lethargic, the young Nigerian feel amply repaid, and the subject is too comprehensive and of far reaching importance to be fully understood, out attempting an exhaustive analysis of the subject I shall state in the next section. We know why the young Nigero of America and especially Texas should have at least a working knowledge of Spanish. When we take into consideration that there are only two growing languages English and Spanish (and that of the young Nigero gaining the secondary) and that a bilingual man hat the advantage and that of the unilingual man we can or should be able to see the importance of having a knowledge of these It is an axiomatic truth that he who has an atom of prejudice whether any group of people falls short of having a liberal education. It is also true that any barrier social, political or economic development of that segregated group in proportion to the density of the war of this barrier. One of the amazing things in this country is the visiting Latin American is the almost absolute lack of prejudice as to what the Spanish Americans are doing in the present or what they have done in the past. This is not a noticeable, as is the case with the achievements of the Colored American, in the high school texts upon which he learned. He will find in Latin America geographical conditions similar to the rest of the world, and addition there, he will find these additions advantageous which I consider the greatest asset, because they are independent of race or color, lack of clanman hampering tradition, free play of individual" effort and opportunity, and generous breath of horizon. In the free countries of Latin America the culture is abundant cherished ideals and aspirations, these ideals and aspirations are encouraged and may be extended to the crushed and bruised, though romantic, soul of a people may find themselves in political and commercial expansion. The evidence of the welcome and cordial relationship that exists for the Colored American in Latin America, I shall quote an excerpt from the speech of an American minister, a "vero formerly an American, to their country who now in the city of Mexico daily paper and I am inserting the original for the best of those who may have known the intriguing beauty of the extract is lost in the translation to English. "La nacion de clima alcalde alcalde." Without prolonging this article I shall briefly summarize the importance of the Latin Americans and the need of familiarizing ourselves with their environments. (1) A means towards acquiring a liberal education. Hidden in the volumes of Latin American genres of literature are to be found. (2) A knowledge of Spanish as on occasion the expansion of our educational activities. (3) As a means of opening up and widening our commercial activities. (4) Would be an effective means of combating and offsetting Germanized-South American racism that is being eliminated through out those countries with the malicious intent of retarding the moral stamina and the racial activities of the Latin Americans.
