FIFTY YEARS OF FREEDOM COMPARED WITH TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF FREEDOM TUDE, A RACE BORN IN A DAY REACHES THE AGE OF FIFTY FIVE. A REMARKABLE PROGRESS ALLELWITH ALL OF NINEEW- LANES-OWNED IN ERA THE SIZE OF IRELAND. A Negro Buys One Million Dollar- Worth of Liberty Bonds in Louis- lan—The Largest of Any Other Single Individual of that State it was born in. By N. W. Harllee The American New York is fifty-years old, fifty years old of constitutional freedom, years full of experiential adventure, years full of least, full of education and hope. What shall we find in the accommodation of a man or woman, who has reached the age of fifty-five years? And now what shall we say or expect of a man or woman of fifty-five years, the age of fifty years, since the race is made up of individuals? How other races declare is still in the experimental store? Shall we meet new materials or shall we measure it by what we think we are. Let the sports meet the measure. The measure may be applied in two ways: It may be found from the growth and taking the two together, we may arrive at the correct measure. One way to measure a person is by the number of acres of land owned by a citizen. We thought that comes to the mind when speaking of a citizen is he who lives in the house in which he lives, or is he a part of the community by possession? Well, these are good homely people. We thought that he was reasked till we shall have some million or more of Colored people on five hundred thousand homes, own five hundred thousand homes, freedom without an author, they can lay claim to five hundred Negro homes, freedom without an author, they can record the patent office at Washington, we find that one thousand Negroes have been granted patents; some of these inventions have been of material aid in the advancement of technology, many lines. We find that brains and skill will pay good dividends and they apply so as to bring about the best results. For these considerations, we are much indebted to the inventors of the patent office of apostolic education. Dr. Dr. Booker T. Washington made one hundred and a half hundred homes and had a better effect on our people in home than any other single home. than any other single hundred of Colored people purchased homes and opened bank accounts after that address. It was an amazing success. We home to the minds that became enraptured for material uplift. Soon after that, we showed that Colored people paid taxes on property valued at over a million dollars in a most wonderful character that impressed all who heard him in his home getting sermons. Four thousand physicians in fifty years for a race born in a day, measure up in a degree that any people can attain, and the twenty-five hundred trained nurses 'who are to look after our sick and to handle the afflicted with our care' are to be asset in the time of need, while the two thousand lawyers of the country are from slavery with not a single attorney of race men; then no, we are told that there are no more profession than that of Negro civil and mining engineers, whose skill and dexterity in their profession are mortorious and praised in real thing a credit to their race wherever and whenever they have worked in the land that told the era of land that the Colored people own in this country and that is the land of Ireland, and that he must be of Ireland, when it is taken in consideration that 'the Colored man started with nothing, not even the rags on his head, but that he had land except the blue sky above his head and today he owns land enough to be as Ireland. What has the race wrought, and yet we are only fifty years, age the age of a young man, and we are more along other line, but this is sufficient to point to some of the few achievements that may encourage We can scarcely believe that a Colored man in Louisiana once one of the most powerful Liberty Bonds during the late war, the highest amount purchased by a eleagle individual in the war, or the highest amount purchased in fifty years of progress from poverty and plinking want in 1868. Then, too, in the purchase of Liberty Bonds and other government securities are a matter of record and need not be We could mention the great work that the church is accomplishing by a host of ancient christian ministers who denounce our people and without these the race would be at sea, for it has been the ministers that kept the faith alive and that have narrow path. The teachers too have accomplished a commendable work at a sacrifice, working on small salaries and with many incompen- But to conclude the work of fifty years after two hundred and fifty years of servitude, is a most remarkable one. PAGE SEVER -WEEKLY- LESSON IN CIVICS. Twenty Million New Voters. When thirty-six states in the United States have ratified the Federal Suffrage, the voters will be added to America's electorate at a slip. Except for Huntersville, North Carolina, as that added to an electorate of full-fledged voters at once in the mid-19th century, new voters come from a division of people who have been systematically excluded from politics and civics. They are all women. Most of them will be voting for the first time in their lives, and they will be voting in the time in their lives. They will be voting on such superior proportions as the United States and on issues that are vital to the life and well-being of our nation. What is America doing to prepare these novelties? Just what she has always done for the first twenty-two years by year. Just what, until very recently, she has always done for the first twenty-two years by year. What is absorbed by naturalization process years by year. America is putting it squarely up to the women themselves to learn their way about in the new sphere. Given the vast number of hands, thousands of the women who will vote this year for the first time couldn't tell which hand held the pen. Thousands of women don't know what a pulling place is and have been made mostly afraid of pelling places or barely aware of all lions to them. Ladies' Home Journal. This new edition, enlarged and improved, contains the information of former issues revised and brought down to date. One of its most interesting features is an apical heading that identifies the regard to race relationship and Negro activity in the recent war and peace. There is no doubt that as time goes on the Negro Year Book will have more statistics and condensed facts which concern our group in America. So much information is whose information is absolutely reliable. It is hoped that our public will co-operate with Prof. Work, its compiler, by giving to him facts about the movements and other Negro interests in their section in order that its usefulness may be augmented and preserved.
