(The above is translation from the original in Spanish t —F.M. Robinett) ene ee ee ‘The School Board has voted the following raise in salaries Hor the teachers of Dallas: Negro teachers will receive a flat raise of $800 and the automatic increase of 886 a year till the Imaximom salary ig reached which in the grades is $1120 and in ‘the high $1800. At the same time the salaries of the white teachers was increased $400 with an automatic increase In the grades of $70 ‘and in the high schools $75. per year.” his inerease ‘has been made possible by’ the voting” of ‘the 80e schoo! tax. ‘The raise accorded the Negro teachers is so far as we know ithe highest ever given at one time. Tt was highly necessary /however and its granting has made possible the retention in this ‘school system of many teachers who otherwise would have been {forced by economic conditions to find more lucrative employment. ‘The passage of the bonds was due in great part to the sys- tematic campaigning of the teachers as a body and much of the leredit for the expansion of the school system made possible by Se tf Sonty, due them, Their ‘ction in this wan, rompted primarily by their realization of the need of increased facilities land their desire for a more nearly just wage for the efforts put forth by them in the training of the children directly under their care. ‘They realized first of all that even though their demands for better salaries and increased facilities were made the School frees atte Gearmea ate cree make funds available and they 80. ‘The teachers themselves paid $50 for the compilation of a roster of the names of all the Negro tax payers of the city. They then met and apportioned the tax-payers among themselves for jan intensive canvass in behalf of the bonds. ‘That the canvass as, thorough is attested by the fact that the passage of the bonds was due in no small part to Negro voters, ‘The salary petition of these teachers asked the approval by the Board of Bducation of a salary schedule for grade and high school teachers which was equivalent to a flat raise of $400 or jag fiat raise of $400. They received $300 with an automatic '$96 increase. ‘They are to be congratulated and commended as st the voters who supported them. Public should feel in reyard to this increase, that it is jan approach to the wage justly due teachers. Even though this {nerease may seem large as compared to those of former years, it must remember that even now on a 12 month basis the most highly paid high school teacher would receive only about $108.00 jber, month—a sum of no consequence when compared with that of the ordinarily skilled workman, Tt is not nearly enough. ‘There have been times however when a Southern Board of ejiacation could not have made such a concession to the demands lof teachers if it had so desired. Its white constituents would not have stood for it. We feo! that in time a realization pl come of the absolute necessary for equal school opportunities We take this credit to ourselves.
