THANKSGIVING
- UNITED BROTHERS OF FRIENDSHIP AND SISTERS OF MYSTERIOUS TEN JUVENILES OF THE WORLD
- UNITED BROTHERS OF FRIENDSHIP AND SISTERS OF MYSTERIOUS TEN JUVENILES OF THE WORLD
A Proclamation by the Grand Master.
Our fraternal conflicts have deepened our convictions as to the right kind of service to be given for the meeting of the race needs, has enlarged our mission to be a leader in the race, has broadened our sympathies for a more substantial building of llamas to what Atty, General Looney, the highest authority in Fraternity insurance had to say about our order. "Grand Master Bledsoe, I wish to congratulate you on your service," Looney said. "Yourers, its management is a tribute to the race, the results are miracles when we take into consideration that it all has been done by a slave race—that is, the race of the slaves." He said we care for your race in this way, and may the order continue 47 years more to do the same kind and even better work for your worthy race." He thanked God for such record coming from the Atty, General's office. "We are grateful to you for your service to the race, consciousness which the world's greatest war left richly abiding in the bosom of race people—and the more the spirit is developed and cultivated, the less the race will delight to follow the leadership of others, whether they are slaves or free people." He said we make their way and history, and will cease in great measure to rally around the end and standards of others but will make one of their own. "Fourth—Let's thank Him that through it all and over it, all many a time our feet have been tangled by the enemies, but none of them have been hurt." He said we become a world power in that they were the first among race fraternities to reach the surplus mark of $100,000 and this great show should inspire and encourage every member of the order for noble service. William Felga Bledsoe, G. M., do hereby cause to be issued this proclamation requesting that all United Brothers of Friendship, Sisters of the Mysterious Ten, Juveniles, Knights of Friendship to assemble in one joint session of the General Assembly, and to out the program prepared by the Grand Lodge, on the 30th day of May, the same being the 5th Sunday of May, 1920. Let's come together and give thanks for His mercy and tender care and protection.

I wish everyone who suffers from this disease to seek medical help. I, Avenue Milwaukee, Wis., ask for a bottle of the same kind of medicine which he gave me. THRIFT
Eating One's Cake.
Long ago the observation was made that one can not eat his cake and have it too. Neither time nor place makes it possible, whit the truthfulness and significance of its import. If one spends all that he makes there is nothing to eat, and the purchase is rejected, will eat away the cake of savings, and rapaciously devour the money. Most dollars spent now pay for sixty cents value or, stated another way, articles that cost a dollar or more will cost $1.40. Things move in cycles. Within three, four or five years from now, the purchasing power of savings will increase. The question everyone should decided for himself when it comes to the money which will cost him $1.40 now or only a dollar five years from now, is worth it. Spent today that dollar five years will cost $1.40 now; saved and saved five years from now it will have a hundred owner will have the interest it has made for him if he has wisely invested it in War Savings Stamps or not. Those who now form the habit of getting one or more War Savings Stamps at the postoffice each month will have to congratulate themselves upon the exercise of good judgment and long-term loyalty. They must not cast they can not save because they fail to analyze their expenditures and know exactly where their money is going. They must be frank with themselves, will find after a few days use of pencil and pen to write their expenditures that they can easily add to their interest-bearing War Savings Stamps collection every month. A personal reserve fund is necessary.
Saving is decidedly worth while. A personal reserve fund is necessary. It can be had only by saving.
Some economist has announced that the high cost of living will abolish polygamy. It is causing the destruction of all other expensive issuers of men. Why should it not remove this one? This is at least one argument in its favor.
Some geologist has discovered that Texas wells will soon run dry. We should worry. The one in which we invested was dry to start with.
The new device for allocating one or two plumman cars might be used to advantage in some of our churches.
THE DALLAS EXPRESS. DALLAS TEXAS. MAY 22. 1920
When men cease making mistakes they will no longer be human. They will have passed into the state of omniscience where divine wisdom dwells. All men who have accomplished much have made grievous errors in this accomplishment. To err is human. Errors if rightly considered make for progress. The lessons taught by errors rightly applied lessen the occurrence of like errors in the case of the same individual.
The man who would amount to much and accomplish much is not deterred by the thought of making a mistake. He cannot afford so to be. The valuable time taken in such consideration weakens his determination and robs him of part of the energy necessary to the accomplishment of his task.
The careful and just view of errors made either by friend or foe should cause in every constructive person a reflective trend of thought in order that the lesson taught by it might be wholly absorbed and rightly applied.
Adverse criticism cannot rectify an error once made. Vitulence of man should repair no damage. If we would be really helpful to our friends and true to ourselves we should scrutinize their errors with a view to avoiding such errors in our own lives and help them repair the damage done them by their commission of it.
Such a course of action will result in a unity which is highly efficient and a helpful sympathy which in its broadness of operation, would allow for sympathy and cheerful assistance to the beat of us.
It will do much to remove from among us that quality which causes even our friends to liken us to crabs in a barrel. It will render us willing, even glad to make ourselves dependable part of a support upon which others among us may build for themselves success and high achievement and in turn help us.
The records of races and nations prove that such a principle rightly and consistently applied individually and collectively has caused the perpetuation of empires and the evolution of an enlightened civilization.
We need it more. It cannot come as a gracious benediction from any merciful providence. It must be cultivated by individuals and shared by them with their neighbors till it resolves itself into a mighty and irresistible force which shall hold us in the air, unwillingly to the task of measuring up to the best that is in us.
It will help build bigger and better business. It will cause us to number our successful men as a majority and not a minority. It will allow those who would do, a greater opportunity for doing, secure in the realization that they have access to the resources they need. It is an absolute necessity in our scheme of progress. We must cultivate it if we would have poise, prestige and power.
The General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church has decided to elect two Negro bishops. This decision was reached after a discussion of the resolution brought in by W. W. Lucas, lay delegate from Mississippi. In the course of his speech Mr. Lucas said:
"We want a chance to do a man's job in a man's way. The future of the Negro members of the Methodist Church lies either in or out of that church. If we are to stay in, give us our rights; if we are to go out, it is our duty all the more to let us learn how to walk alone. There is gravitation towards unity among all the Negro churches. The may teach you now to go about it. It may be necessary for us to go a racial Methodist Church in order to get our rights. We want our own bishops because we have a legitimate right to them."
There can be no doubt but that there will be a greater incentive to the growth and development of the Negro portion of the Methodist church under the direct supervision of men of their own race who can more easily and completely get at the facts and conditions which will determine its growth.
There are 350,000 Negro members of the Methodist Episcopal church in America and they have been striving for many years to reach this point just decided upon, the ministration of their own bishops.
There is a great opportunity for better understanding and added co-operation of the white and Negro branches of this church in the election of these bishops.
More and more the thinkers of both races are realizing that much of the lack of sympathy for Negro aspirations and ignorance of those conditions which thwart him most are due to lack of contact with his leaders which alone can lead to that understanding.
The election of these bishops will increase the opportunity for discussion of many of the phases of the "problem" which may lead to a greater co-operation in securing the desired end.
It is to be hoped that as this layman has interested himself in securing greater opportunity for the growth of his church and the just consideration of the Negro as a potent factor in it, so may they all unite to make the administration of their bishops successful and productive of an ever increasing amount of good.
The men who are candidates for those offices are men of known ability and have been prominent among us for many years. Their rise to the bishopric is highly gratifying. And to them an added opportunity for the wider use of their already well known ability for leadership and successful handling of affairs. If we are to gauge the ambitions of this particular denomination by the utterances of one of its prominent members during the conference, there is a wonderful work awaiting these bishops. This work is in the need of the "development of the Negro by giving him equal opportunity and freedom from abuse" will make itself generally felt. The "seeking out of the intelligent" among us will be made more easy with these two points of contact already estab-
While Republican members of our group in certain sections of Texas are beating and abusing their week-knee brothers in black for "falling from political grace" and accepting the filthy luce of the "illy-white," we are feeling highly elated at the unanimous, whole hearted spontaneous response of the men of Texas to the standard of true Republicanism as set forth in the Green-McCarthy bill. They are being blamed for the "black lily-white" and he because of his innate ignorance and poverty of intellect and spirit, was more to be pitted than censured.
The success of our rally was due to the splendid organization and careful attention to detail of our chairman A. S. Wells and his able corps of executive and supporters. Dallas County Negroes were united. They turned out en masse to the precinct concession stand, strong to the county convention and took it by storm. They clenched their hands to the Convention and the orderliness with which they conducted their campaign there won the admiration even of their enemies.
They are going to the State Convention in the same way—full of hope, confident of the justice of their contentions and determined to stay in it to the finish.
We are not boastful. We are only attempting to command the efforts of executives and voters who pulled together in this effort for that which they must have. We have paid our own expenses. We are our own masters.
May this same spirit continue to manifest itself among us more and more in all of our activities. It can't be heat.
ERRORS AND CRITICISM.
NEGRO M. E. BISHOPS
WE CAN'T GRUMBLE
THE MIRROR OF PUBLIC OPINION
FEDERAL SUPERVISION OF EDUCATION
Down in Mississippi, S. D. Hedron, attorney, and one of the most substantial Colored citizens in the Delta State, is agitating that the next Republican National Convention incorporate a plank in its platform favoring federal supervision of education. Such a plank might, at least, show to the world that the Republican party favors equal education opportunities for all, without reference to race or color. And, perhaps, the only substantial Colored citizen who may receive an equitable portion of public funds for Colored Education, is the federal superior of education.
Redmond point out that white there are 2,000,000 more Colored people in Mississippi than whites, there are 150 consolidated rural schools, normal and agricultural high schools in the state for whites, and not one for Colored. Surely that is an effective argument in favor of federal supervision of education. This was merely to restore burned buildings.
To further illustrate how nigratly is looking after the education of her loyal Colored boys and girls, it can be said that the Colored people in Mississippi are divided, stand in the ratio of 43 to 57 for Colored, and yet Mississippi spends $46 for permanent improvements for white institutions for higher education. In the state of the ratio of 43 to 57 for Colored, and yet Mississippi spends $46 for permanent improvements for white institutions for higher education. In the state of the ratio of 43 to 57 for Colored, and yet Mississippi spends $46 for permanent improvements for white institutions for higher education. In the state of the ratio of 43 to 57 for Colored, and yet Mississippi spends $46 for permanent improvements for white institutions for higher education.
Education of the Colored man is a perfectly foreign idea with the avarice white Mississippi. To facilitate the education of the race he can only be in safety so long as he keeps the Colored race in ignorance.
The South the whites established an educational qualification for the exercise of the right of franchise, and they reason that the only way to perpetuate Disfranchisement is to perpetuate ignorance among Colored people.
The Colored men appointed by Chairman Hays to serve on the committee to draft the Republican platform could not render a better service than to preside and insist on adoption, of a platform plank calling for the preservation of the 12,000,000 Colored people in the South educational fair.
Colored men, North as well as South, should rally to Mr. Redmond's plan, and equitable appropriations for education of Colored boys and girls in the South educational fair.
NEGROES ARRANGE STATE INJUSTICE
In a general way the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People represents the claims and aspirations of all the millions of African Americans known as the Crisis. That organ, of course, preaches the doctrine of race and the law. It is entitled to do so under the principle of "free speech and free press." Interference by Mississippi with the circulating of this newspaper, which is the official news organization, which amounts to an assertion that the "republican form of government," which the Nation is directed by the Constitution to guarantee, is a Negro minister whose only crime was selling copies of the Crisis was arrested in a Mississippi village, convicted under a State law, fined $400, and ordered imprisoned for five months at hard labor. To give bond to the Negro minister, the State said that he told him that if the minister were recessed he would be lynched, and refused the bond which had previously been accepted by the sheriff. Then the Negro minister was sent to the State and would be lynched if he did not drop the case. The association being informed of the fact sent a message to the Governor of the State demanding protection for the forms of law made and provided by Mississippi statutes. The Governor, in response, said that equality and intermarriage between races. The mildness of his sentence was not enough to prove that this sheet would visit Mississippi we would make an example of them that would be a lasting benefit to the Colored people of the South and further appeal to the actual Governor has been unanswered. The expression above shown is reasonably to be the answer of a soverign State, through its daily choosely executive, to representatives of a race which is not a soverign State. The American commonwealth is lined up on the side of the lynch law. Mississippi assumes to control the editions of papers published in the North and South, and to control the publication of old slave days. We suppose a circulator of abolition literature would have fared about as this minister fares now. But optimists had believed that the shared down there, and their belief seems to have been singularly ill-behaved.
CURRENT AND OTHERWISE
Associated Negro Press.
In a letter to Senator Reverdy Johnson, dated April 14, 1865, Ex-President Millard Fillmore expresses a profound ephemeration that a dreadful "race" of blacks opposes the right to own property, and impedes, helpless blacks" he asked. I suppose a large portion of them are wholly incapable of providing for themselves, and too indolent, too ignorant, too helpless. He asks, "Is it possible as pauper or our penitentiaries as criminals?" All of which goes to show that Mr. Fillmore was worely ignorant of the African's character aven a slave. But aside from the fact his letter proverbs that he was almost criminally responsible for the death of a slave in the person of the slave-making it possible for the American Experiment to get on its social and economic feet. It is true that a considerable number of blacks are not responsible for the use of help fill the penitentiaries. But the general charge that we are indolent and criminal is stated without a due regard for a very important economic, social and industrial part we have played in the life of the African. It is true that we know no color and apparently, has a rather deep rooted contempt for race.
It has been discovered in Alabama that the Colored farmers are discontinuing the old time practice of knocking off work every Saturday to "go to town." By some incanny means the Colored man and brother has made the discovery that laying off on Saturdays doesn't pay in these times. The Colored man and brother has children to school with some of the savings, and taking a more general interest than was his wont in other times to the part he is to play in the town. He is not in theocracy. In the classic language of the late imprinted Billy Kersand, "We are not a race." The worm is beginning to turn. The Nersews of Arkansas nominated one of their number for governor. But, the most stupently criminal feature of their actions lies in the fact that they nominated their man because they resented the treatment they had received at the hands of the black people. The more wonderful world we live in, the more likely we don't watch, the Nersews will upwardly soon ways filled with the notion that he knows what it is to be respectable, then look out! He will be nominating men for the Presidency.
It is not the Colored people alone who get tired of the Jim Crow cars of the South. The railway companies in many cases oppose the car law on account of the heavy expense of complying with its provisions.
People outside of our group can possibly realize the sting, the limitation, the hardships of the black men and women are forced to endure. The black people are forced to endure a law. A careful study on the part of any social student will convince that it is contrary to a Christian sense of fairness, utterly incompatible and conducive to more friction between the race than any other public publicly known in our government.
The Tulas (Oka) Star.
More than ever before the Negro is demanding a square star.
This spirit and demand that is prompting all the utterances and actions which are being taken by the Race all over this country at this time.
Getting down to brave tasks is up to every young Negro in the city of Detroit, who has had the advantages of home training, public school, church life, pleasant environments, better things of life to remember that there are thousands of his brothers who are less fortunate need a helping hand.
The Detroit (Mich.) Leader.
The lynching of an unknown colored boy at Mulberry, Kansas, Monday is a shame and disgrace to the state and the good government that has been successful today. An audience, a decency and a square deal to all mankind. The law upon our statutes.
The Topeka (Kans.) Plaindealer.
The Wood Box, a trade journal published in Chicago in a recent editorial on the shortage of labor, presents the following remedy: "Better team be instituted." The law requires that the team together for the benefit of all. Being an American, I say, "Amen." I suspect however, that I had better make the announcement in a whisper, the Good Box, may not have any kind of an American in mind when it calls for me.
A Colored man of Foytville, Ga., has invented a trap which successfully catches the boll weevil. This is a splendid achievement. Now if he will turn his inventive genius to the production of a contrivance that will painfully lynch the boll weevil, I imagine I could be happy for ten years.

"You'll get no change from your quarter."
Isn't it strange how ladies express themselves when men pass them, me, they will say, "isn't he love him?" Others will say, "I wonder if he is a single man."
But honestly girls, I am married said Samuel Simkima the other day to my sister, I had really couldn't blame me, for marrying. I had to do something—I was out to do something, and did anything to do; I married. The old saying was "Love bliss" well that was the case with me. I once was blind now I see. Marrying has absolutely blind no longer. Ican see now from a long range. Ican see now from a long range.
"Though old the thought, and oft expressed, 'Is his at last who it says it best.'"
BEWARE OF PEDDLERS,
*Beware of the many fish huckleberry that are constantly visiting Colored River fish that are caught out of Trinity River. These fish are fed upon at home and are not desirable and unfit for consumption. These peddlers pick for Negro neighborhoods and prey upon the ignorant inhabitants of their product. The variety of fish commonly seen is the "Gerbera" fish and big sewers of the city. People buy and buy because the prices are cheap within itself should expire and buy because the propose low prices are the bait that catches and lures the unfortunate into to purchasing some unfortunate and unfit for use. Quit buying much of this "guerbera stuff" knows about and you know less.

Some of the Colored people of Dallas deserve special mention for the interest they have taken in the history of the city. THEY call me "The Satan of the Screen." That's because, in "BLIND HUSBANDS" I play a polished villain in the only way a villain should be played—to make you hate him! But if you're a woman, I don't think you'll hate me—you only be fascinated—because I know so much about you! You'll know that I know how to show wives when they're neglected—how to win their affections—how to place them where they'd finally be at my mercy. And though you'll stoutly deny that wife in "BLIND HUSBANDS" is to blame, you'll sympathize with her longing for love and you'll lay it at all her husband's door—and mine. If you don't, you're a very unusual woman—just as "BLIND HUSBANDS" is a very unusual photorama. Come and see. You'll have the most tremendous hour you've had at any moving picture. Now playing.
