has never lobed the white feather, neither has it been disgraced by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the flannel mouth. It is in a plain, every day, sensible, conservative newspaper, which trims no nail to catch the pansing breeze; flies no doubtful flag; It no doubt will be the bread as our country, its love of even handed justice covers all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are prospering. Boys of the press come up and stand with us. This ground is too. W. E. KING.
SATURDAY DECEMBER 4, 1920.
INTELLIGENT UNSELFISHNESS.
Christmas gifts are neither more nor less than translated thoughts. The gift is worth no more than a selfish or a careless thought to the recipient. The gift is worth no more than a money may have been. That is why many a youngster and a many a grown up also, finds Christmas day a time of disappointment and disappointment. Present bought in selfish hope of return, or in inexpressible fulfilment of pleasure of the moment can never bring real appreciation to the recipient. For they lack the essential pleasure of the moment and lack the essentials of "good will" and thought for the future. None of us has had so much that we do not desire those dear to us to have more. None of us has loved those dear to us to have others to avoid the mistakes we have made. The successful Christmas gifts are those which are based on thought moment but on thought/and care for the future. None of us knows the future, but each of us hopes for the future.
Searcely a Christmas gift is dispatched in this country that is not to worry about the future. HOPE for the future. But it is possible to give gifts which carry not only hope but an ASSURANCE that you will be able to maintain the character, that inspire success that promote independence. You can give them a training that should be part of the equipment of every institution against malfortune which will last them all their lives, AND THEY WILL LIKE THEIR PHYSICIAN. What is more, you can make your presents cost what you will, and you can afford to buy them. You need you do need to ask for Government Savings. Securities. No matter how aim or but bulky your purse, they will afford you more than you afford no more than a 25 cent Thrift Stamp placed on its card you can move toward giving you boy or girl an investment, as the man who gives his children a $100 Treasury Savings certificate on the way to financial independence and safety with a $2 War Savings Stamp as well as with your younger brother.
When you give those sound securities, you put love and thought behind them. You can give as well as money and you can give happiness for the future as well as will it fit it. No matter if you can take, YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ALL YOU CAN GIVE FOR CHRISTMAS OVER AND ABOVE ENERGY SAVINGS SECURITIES BUY W. S. S.
Any old tool can save money but it takes a hard headed man to save it.
Men seduced ever forest the hand that that, "hum" or the foot that "kicks them." One woman calls another a "cow," she's been beaten by her in some war.
BOLSHEVISM AND OURSELVES.
It is hardly possible that much significance will be accorded the alleged speech of the late American radical writer John Reed, before the Moscow meeting of the Communist internationale in which he urged the Reds to enlist the aid of American Negroes in the spread of their propaganda. In his speech he is alleged to have declared that the American Negro offered a fertile field for such propaganda.
Describing the position of the Negro in the United States, expressly acknowledging the States, as "terrible," Reed declared the Negro offers a two-fold opportunity to the spread of communism in this country; first, a strong race and social movement, second, a strong race and social movement, and second, a strong proletarian movement. Race consciousness has steadily increased among the Negroes, he said, "a certain section of whom are now carrying on a propaganda in favor of armed revolt against the whites, and Socialistic ideas are rapidly developing among the blacks employed in industrial establishments.
Describing the status of the Negro in America, Reed asserted that despite the constitution's mandate the ballot in the Southern Negroes were killed if they dared to exercise this right, and that the use of separate schools, hotels and theaters existed in all parts of the country.
"This separation of the Negro from the white is called the 'jim crow' system, and the clergy of the Southern churches teach that there is also a heaven where the 'jim crow' system is in operation." Reed declared.
In so far as Mr. Reed's description of the general condition of the Negro in America is concerned, we must give him credit for having correctly stated our status. Our position, especially in the South is "terrible." If any one doubts that our constitutional rights are denied us, let him investigate the Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia. He has only to view the lynching records of all Southern States to be assured that in describing our condition to the "红" convention, Mr. Reed made no mistake.
His judgment did are greatly however in its supposition that we would or could welcome any communistic or Bolshevistic propaganda. It is not possible nor probable that such will ever be the case. Bolshevism and its method of operation do not appeal to us in the least.
We are satisfied with our form of government.
What we are not satisfied with is the spirit in which the laws are administered and the attitude toward us as assumed by a great class of American inhabitants in their adherence to a fallacious doctrine. As we see it our lot as a group has always been and still is extremely unfortunate but even so, we would hesitate much before exchanging it for the present lot of the Russian peasant.
We have seen and have been informed of Bolshevism at its best and it does not now and never will appeal to us. We firmly believe that we shall finally succeed in realizing our hopes for a freer, fuller opportunity for doing our utmost for America, partly because of the growing race consciousness because the sentiment toward us will be compelled to change because of a growing sense of justice and a fuller realization of the duties of all Americans to each other.
We have no reason to feel that America's ideals are impossible of final accomplishment but we do have ample proof that Bolshevism has few commendatory qualities. Class solidarity of which Bolshevik leaders speak so highly has in this country been responsible for the wall of prejudice which has caused us to suffer.
We would rather encourage the continuation of the efforts of our own best thinkers, working with our fairer minded neighbors who are applying themselves with such increasing earnestness toward mutual co-operation in bringing to pass a scheme of greater justice and more equitable dealing.
We have seen and have been informed of a steady change of public opinion toward a platform which, like the platform adopted by the Christian leaders of the South a few days ago.
adopted by the Christian leaders of the South a few days ago. "(1) declares lynching to be a crime against the Nation's honor and calls upon the South for an uncompromising opposition to all mob violence; (2) urges laymen throughout the South to keep in close touch with the administration of justice, particularly in the petty courts, and to form legal-aid societies for the benefit of the poor and unprivileged of all races; (3) urges that adequate and equitable arrangements be made for the safety and comfort to Negro travelers; (4) deplores the insanity and housing conditions of the poor; (5) calls upon the poor to make that ignorance breed disorder, vice, and crime; (6) urges ministers to teach people to apply Christian principles to their treatment of the Colored race; (7) calls on the Christian forces to co-operate with the Commission on Interracial Co-operation; (8) recommends the formation of local interracial committees whose object will be the conservation of peace and justice for all; (9) requests the official and denominational organizations of both races to make a thorough study of interracial problems and work out adequate interracial programs." We author class spirit. We feel rather that the final success of Americans and Americans will depend upon the extent to which every individual and every class demands its rights but, performs its duties, realizing absolutely that because of their inter-dependence, mutual co-operation is essential to success. Such is not the creed of the Bolsheviks.

The following dispatch from the Associated Negro Press, Washington correspondent is of great interest: "Ever since 1912, when the National Negro Business League met in Chicago, Illinois, the Negro banking institute in Chicago, which would put them in line with the great banking establishments of the country on a basis entirely satisfactory to all concerned. A banquet was given in honor of the representatives of the Colored banking institutions at Chicago, in 1912 at the famous Palmer House but nothing definite came out of the movements. At the recent meeting of the National Negro Business League, held in Philadelphia, August, 1920, Dr. Emmett J. Scott, Secretary of the National Negro Business League, keeping in mind the efforts which have been made during the past few years to put Colored banking institutions in touch with the great captains of industry, invited certain representatives of New York banking interests to meet with a group of Colored bankers
At that conference last August a full, free, and informal interchange of opinions took place. Out of the conference grew the decision to pursue the effort to a final conclusion so that Colorized banks may not be handicapped in the future, as they have been in the past by lack of sympathetic help from the bank. The bank is now under new way looking to closer affiliations of this character and the effort is being supported by some of the most important of the Colored and white banking institutions of the country. A capital fund of One Million Dollars will be used to finance the program. Full announcement of the details will be from New York within the next few days. Application for chairs has been made by groups representing the various involved.
Such an announcement is inspiring to our financial leaders who have heretofore been handicapped by a lack of such financial connections as would facilitate their growth and service. Our banks are the guardians of our business. They are essential to the maintenance and formation of all financial ventures. Such a program if carried to final accomplishment will open up avenues to an economic development hitherto scarcely able to be imagined.
The acquittal of Lowe by the Fort Worth jury is only further proof that those citizens of Arlington who prevented mob action acted as became real citizens.
Those who maintain that talk is cheap are refuted by the doubling of telephone rates.
A Negro saved a white man from lynching last week. Turn about is fair play.
THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, DECEMBER, 4, 1920.
THE MIRROR OF
PUBLIC OPINION
THE NEGRO BEFORE THE LAW.
There can be little inducement, nowadays, for Negro people to have confidence in the laws by which we are governed, in view of the brand of justice which is being meted out to Negroes in the courts.
When the issue is an between a Negro and a white man, and the decision must finally rest with a jury made up of white men here is any result gave that which favors the white man. We repent, his unfortunate decision, by recognizing that the unnumerous sentiment favoring the Negro at a dismay of keeping him "the under doe." To go further, if one studies some of the results and decisions in the light of the testimony, one must conclude that the testimony of Negro witnesses, even when confirmable and consistent with other circumstances surrounding the case is generally discredited or given less weight than that of the white man. It is impossible to explain the unwarranted decisions in many cases save alone upon the general assumption that the Negro must be "kept down" in his place, would be unaware to convict a white man for assaulting him or murdering him.
In our courts there are, as everyone knows, countless cases of violence between white men and black which lands them in courts. In only the most fragrant cases, and in the rarest jurisdictions, is a verdict ever rendered against a white offender. In the great majority of the cases the Negro bears the burden whether he was the aggressor.
To justify the assault or killing of a Negro a white man has only to say that the Negro made a threat or motion as to draw a gun. The white offender can justify the shooting of a Negro in the back while fleeing with a defense. It is done very often in our courts**** **** Most Negroes are guilty upon slightest provocation and they might defend themselves. This is the usual history of Negroes killed or beaten by police officers.
A white man was acquitted of murdering a Negro by shooting him straight through the back in our courts here this week. The white physicians testifying showed that the Negro victim was shot "straight through" there being no defection of the bullet. Several witnesses testified the Negro was fleeing when shot down. The accused claimed that the Negro reached for a gun and the shot was fired as he "wheeled." Which testimony occurred with the bullet which ranged straight through the back of the victim?
These occurrences frequent and wide-spread, do not terrorize Negroes to submission. They breed o disrespect and a lack of confidence in the law, and those who are charged with the upholding it. They inspire resentment and distrust of their oppressions.
And why not? Are not these laws made by white men? Do they not set up the standards of epalactic justice, only to brush them aside where Negroes are concerned? This is a white man's civilization; he makes the laws, by which we are to be governed. He suspended them, when the issue is beaten. A Negro runs afoul; maybe in some insignificant instances. Immediately the young and inexperienced officers, taken largely from the rural districts rush up with their clubs and pistols to beat and destroy. Other white men rush up with their ready pistols to augment the excitement and disorder, and soon riot is in the air. We have so often seen very minor disturbances converted into most serious consequences to Negroes and Negro communities often embracing many harmless and innocent.
This condition cannot long go on in the serious way it is going.
The thinking people must take a hand in the affairs of the people as they affect the courts and the handling of Negroes generally by public officers. The Negro community is not for black men as well as white, must realize that terror and intimidation not breed the element of good citizenship in men. These methods transform good men into abandoned and reckless men.
And lynching, the great bane of the Southland, still runs riot hereabouts. These good men, law abiding and having the welfare of the community at heart must restrain the reckless and hating among them. Three Negroes at a time in Georgia and seven or eight in Florida, with a community of houses, churches and schools going up in smoke shows that this sect is not a threat and as depicted in Russia of elsewhere. Negro life, limb and property are worth little in the rural districts.
For none of these crimes of lynching and violence are mobs ever brought to trial. In practically all instances the leaders and personal of the mobs are known to the sheriffs and court officers where the crime takes place. Coroner's juries still find that the victims come to their knees. Coroner's juries will find that the victims come to their knees. Lynching and violence are thus encouraged and induced. Those who hate will too quickly get together the crowd of Negro hunters and raid the jail or hold up the sheriff and "suffir up" the Negro. They know the end of it is there and they run no risk of prosecution—all because of this general sentiment and understanding that this terror and intimidation are necessary to "keep the Negro in his place."
Here at Savannah, the people have been free from the terror and the wrong, and the rural Negro suffirs. During the past two or three years, things have changed considerably for the worse, and Negroes have suffered much at the hands of the police and on the street cars, due to the reckless class of men holding most of these positions.
The courts are reasonably satisfactory in so far as matters of importance are in the hands of trained officials and attaches. Wherever, however, the jury comes in to decide the fortunes of litigants or offenders, the judge, helpless, defenseless. Negro before the bar of justice, except in rarest cases.
This "general" state of mind of the masses with reference to the Negro, and the acquiescence in it of the minority of the law-abiding, just people, presents an alarming state of affairs in the South. It intensifies our present problems, and gives us a helpless future to look at. The matter is so grave that something must soon be done or all classes of Necess will live in constant fear of their lives and property.

The cratty politician psychologized the public, and felt assured that the cry of Negro blood would throw it into a spasm of delirium. The infamy of thisaint was deemed to be more detestable than the murderous brand upon the forehead of Cain. It was thought to outweigh in public estimation the entire catalogue of intellectual, moral and political virtues. To charge an American with theft, arson or murder would be considered a crime, and dramatic cleverness. The iron must be struck while it is hot. There must be no margin of time to refute the charges or to recieve public sentiment. The cry of Wolf! Wolf! on the first alarm, stampedes the crowd, even if there is no wolf. But the bungling dastardd did not know his game. Righteous strategy triumphed over dastardly cunning. With amazing colority of action the charge was refuted as soon as made. The dastardly dead red devoids to the shame of the deer. Never before and, let us hope, never again will any political party sink to such a low level if infamy. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely. With righteous indignation against the methods of the character assassin, the American people with all but one voice sweeps Harding into the White House, assured that his purity of blood is as unblemished as his blood. The country is safe the Republican party is victorious, and the honor of the white race is secured.
But what of the Negro? He is supposed to be endowed with ordinary human pride and sensibilities? To him the defense is, if anything, more insulting than the attack. Why should it be considered more benhous than any crime to possess a trace of Negro blood? I doubt whether any race since human civilization has ever been placed under such a ban of opprobrium. It is the hoist of statemen and men of renown that they enry in their veils a blend of Indian blood. But one drop that flows through the veins of the Negro is the assault this assumption the Negro rebel with all the arder and indignation of which his nature is capable. Can the Negro be expected to share in the derogation of his own blood? Is his color of his own choice? He is wholly guillfulness of the stain for which he is astigmatized. Plegmentation affects the color of the body, but not the quality of the soul. Were Dumas and Douglas and Dubur accursed of God and unworthy of honor and esteem because of their sable hue! Shall we be expected to give higher status to such a man? Is it possible that white? Perish the thought! Such, self-shamusement would compromise the Negro's self respect and hypothese all hope. assure us that the Father of All Races and Breeds of Man visits the sins of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate, but shows mercy unto thousands of them that love. The Constitution of the United States forbids the attainment of blood, so that the political and legal sins of the fathers may not be visited upon the children of the world to extend eternal infamy from the foundation of the world to the end of time.
There can be no satisfactory solution of the race problem while this notion prevails. In the face of inincorable exactions of our little palliatives and programs are as ineffectual as the application of enollients to hopeless consumptive. From an inherent sense of self-respect and in vindication of the essential claims of humanity, I insist that his sins be forgiven through human veins. Visiting Children
Victim Children.
Children in the company of others long for the company or others they enjoy. When the wrestle and romp which the group suggests and why not? We do away from home and familiar scenes and go to the school to please. Our children then ought to flower to visit and to receive gifts of good manners of the host duties of good manners of the host child can be presented to your child in a very vivid manner if the child is a very nice person. If you joys some pleasant play, you can be presented to the occasion. On the other hand, if you please the visitor but rough and hurt, you can be right in and you may look for damn
Parents should be kind to visiting children, if in the course of the visit parents should be advised and they should be informed of the institution. One can never tell what kind of education they will receive. Rescall your own childhood education forbidden things. Children must be taught and that is the city of parenthood without having told his parents. They without having told his parents. They child. 800 TEACHERS ATTEND ANNUAL MEETING IN HOUSTON.
The educational awakening which the school has made our educational standing is a gift of our educational standing. It has become known that the destiny of many of men who were unable to read in the past was recalled at the same time that the principles of government are known and that American citizenship must be formed. American schools under strict discipline schools under efficient guidance. Investigation has shown that the rule of the law among our peers, with short term among our peers, with poor school, poor teacher, poor equipment, poor class teachers with no conception of teaching, with nothing of the philosophy of teaching than the asset that it should be to the student, not infrequently become a guardian and children, not infrequently become

(By N. W. Harlee.)
Yesterday, boys and girls, I talked about the three little things that formed the triple link in the golden chain of character, but today I wish to talk about two little words in common of the rich man. I see when I men- tle a rich man that you man- tle fairly rich man for every body thinks of the rich, but Abraham Lincoln took note of the common man for every body loved them for He made so many of them I am about to talk about two little words for He gave me your attention, I shall connect these two little words, the one with the poor man and the other with the rich man.
The man who looks upon any kind labor as a disgrace, is a fit subject in the palace is no more honorable than the over-alls in the fields, in the shop, and on the house. The person to do honor to whom honor is due. Hands with corns in them are more wrapped in kids. The boy covered with dust and arouse in a work shop stands idle on the street corner wishing for the thing in the show windows. If we are fitted for a post, we are to be ringed, of course, we are to ring the bell of intelligence to show where
Whistle And Sing.
I admire the southern black man, because he whistles and sings as he tolls day in and day out. I admire the woman who strikes up her tune when she is gliding upon the wash board, giving the spirit and animation to the world in band. Kings Labor decrees that the woman should be cheerful, skillful and honorable.
Service Unstated.
The object of these paragraphs, boys and girls, are to stress service. Service is the biggest word in our language, and it is everywhere; in shop, in the kitchen, in the church, in the home, nothing counts as efficient service, whatever the job. The rich man's Capital, the Rich Man's Asset, service is the one golden rod that turns everything it touches into gold and that makes up the poor man or the rich man.

THE PRIZE OF PRIZE WINNERS
The books are closed for listing contestants. Thirty have been listed and already they are working manfully for the palatial "Cadillac 8" and and the other BIG prizes which are be-ing offered in the Dallas Express Prize Contest.
It may be that you, Reader, had intended to enter this contest. It may be that you "intended" to try to win one of these wonderful prizes but now it is too late. Your chance is gone.
It strikes us though that you may have a friend in the running. If so, why not win by proxy? Why not help your friend to win and thereby get pleasure for yourself out of his success?
In all sections of Texas, the public is anxious to read the "Dallas Express" because of the peculiar and singular pleasure experienced from its "Distinctive Service."
It fills a long felt want in the appetite of the progressive public.
There are many in your town who want it.
Why not take their subscriptions for your friends?
We know that there are such people in your town. We judge by the fact that we receive subscriptions every week, unsolicited, from people who have long been anxious to take the "Dallas Express" but who have not known how to go about it.
When you put such people in touch with this fast growing and altogether satisfying publication you are doing both a personal and public service.
When one who has never read it before reads the "Express," he immediately realizes that he has found adcredible storehouse of information and a never ending source of inspiration. He is helped.
When he is helped, the public is helped because he at once tends to become a more progressive, courageous citizen and race man.
come a more progressive, courageous citizen and face man
Why not do it? Can't you see that it is your duty thus to help your
friends and neighbors?
If you know of a town to which the "Express" does not go, put us in touch with it. If you have a friend in the contestand other friends who do not subscribe for the "Express" get them for your contestant friend and make him win. This contest will be marked by hard work and hard fought victory. And the victors will be rewarded by prizes, the like of which have never been seen in Texas before.
We will publish the standing of the contestants each week. Some partial returns are already in. Watch this space for developments. The contestants as they now stand
