CHICAGO:
DEATH OF AGED WOMAN MAY REVEAL HIDING PLACE OF FORTUNE.
THE NEW SAINT JAMES A. M. E. TEMPLE,
GOOD AND FLORENCE STREETS
WILL CELEBRATE
Its Opening Exercises
Sunday, January 9th to Monday Evening, January 24th, 1221,
After a little more than a year of hard and persistent effort, the congregation of this splendid structure will occupy their new church home for the first time. Nothing in the history of church building in our city has been more remarkable than the beginning and completion of this church. The membership is small, numbering only 325 including men, women, and children; and yet the work never ceased until it was finished.
The structure is modern in all its details, and will ever stand as a monument to Negro Labor. It has been designed and constructed by Colored men, Mr. W. Sidney Pittman was the Architect and Mr. C. L. Wiley was the Builder. Negro laborers have been the best owned by the race in the country. Every Negro should feel a measure of genuine pride in this building as it proves that there is no color in the line of the building art—that the black man can do anything, if he wants.
AN APPEAL:
The friends have been exceeding kind to us during our struggles—to help us with the building, the necessary furniture and equipments have made it possible to be more generous. We ask that every person who wishes to encourage Negro Enterprise to contribute to the building and get a button, as a souvenir.
VISITING CITIES.

We had to get this program in press before we could consult some of the pastors of the churches whose pastor is a member of the day afternoon, January, 23rd. It is our wish to have every church in our community represented and trust they will be able to serve St. James, have struggled to build a church that will be a credit to the Lord that starts a move that will give the Lord better houses in the near future.
The coming of the Bishops' Council to our city will bring to us a large number of the leaders of the church, many of whom every citizen regardless of denomination to receive them into such a structure as St. James.
Finally it will open the eyes of many of our people to the possibility of a church that is given a chance. Colored men have done the work.
Let every member of the race, who believes that we should seek to be a competent, cooperating when they are competent, cooperating when they are competent, cooperating not less than a dollar. Let our sister churches do the same and other organizations have done.
Whatever you may find it in your heart to do to encourage us in our desperate struggle will be gratefulfully received.

THE DALLAS EXPRESS
has never hoisted the white feather, neither has it been diagnosed by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the yellow streak. It is a plain, every day, sensible, conservative newspaper, which trims no nail to catch the passing breeze; flies no doubtful flag; it prisons a patriotism as love of even handed justice love of even handed justice covers all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are propropering. Bows of the standing hand with us. This ground is holi. W. E. KING.
OUR NEW ASSOCIATE.
We are in receipt of the Golden Chain Squall, official organ of the Golden Chain of the World whose initial number is full of vile race, and whose second number is more show that, they have been shaped by the hand and brain of one who has been a newspaper man. Its editor, W. W. Cowan, recently come among us, is a newspaper man of several years of experience. His name is the Golden Chain, in the initial number to place the "Squall" on high ground and make it an exponent of those things most important to newspapers. "More and more as a people approach the realm of intelligence, the Golden Chain serves the direction given society by 'newpaper service.' The Golden Chain Squall places its "hat into the ring" with the most advanced standing room among the most advanced of Negro Weekly Journals. The Golden Chain is radical only in that measure that truth and justice demands. There will be only one policy—that of
"The Golden Chain Squall" move forward as an exponent of fictional righteousness and practice, our only hope for others as we would have them others as we would have them do unto us, love our neighbor as our own, and make no application of myself will make no application of myself to another only as I would have him apply to us by amalgamating this, our natural issue, that we are approaching the field in a spirit of peace and goodwill. We will gain thousands bespeaking their determination to see that we take our place among the most progressive and most dedicated people, if you please, that the public standard judgments and conclusions we will be bound to get because we are entering the field well prepared. You too, which the editorial column and week to teach the stresses of reflected public opinion as expressed in the national pride. We prepare to rise and fly above the sweltering power of prejudice as expressive and various forms of race repression. Words of all we are a competent and dedicated group of boys and little boys of Texas, and as such we shall stand with any who endeavor to promote the best interest of our people.
The record of Negro Journalism is clean with the great Government, the strong State, and the small endeavor to sustain the record. Our aim is in free Liberty, Truth, Justice and in you high ground. And so you know well, it is because we have faith in you, we believe you stand ready to support the cause and the purpose much of the life and which is a gametime, promises to live so long. We are able to welcome him and his capabilities, secure in the knowlome that he and his organs will find more unselflessness and service in the public.
The Golden Chain, whose direct head in Sharon Kaldh, Tolan, has done much to welcome us, has a digital portal for what has already arrived to be the world's fastest growing nation. We wish them bovor
The attempt now being made by Imperial Wizard Simmons of George and a group of his colleagues to resurrect the Ku Klux Klan and give it such an aim and purpose as will guarantee its growth and operation under the present order of American affairs is causing a veritable storm of protest from many quarters. To our group especially its revival just at this time causes a great stir in the country, and our group especially suffered from its existence in the days of reconstructive after the Civil War.
Ample proof of what its present day aspirations are is easily gained from recent lawless happenings directly traceable to the formation of its local bodies. Chief among such instances is that of Oceo, Florida, where on election day between thirty and forty men, women and children were burned and shot and the bodies of the dead were burned and burned by the clear. It is claimed by a special investigator that before election day warnings had been sent by the Klan to Negroes of this utter warning them to stay away from the polls. The original of a letter sent by the Grand Master of the Klan to a lawyer in the same vicinity telling him that his efforts to get Negroes to become citizens had been observed and that the Klan stood for white supremacy, is in possession of the same investigator. Such being evinced wherever the Klan makes its statements it is proof enough that it has no place in present day American life.
Has much vaunted allegiance to Christian principles is a myth and its desire to maintain "white supremacy" means nothing more than an attempt to again terrorize and oppress members of our group, making them fearful of demanding their constitutional rights.
The Florida episode would be proof enough were no other proof obtainable. In the name of Christianity and "white supremacy" forty people were shot down like hunter and imprisoned, and their lives are penalty for daring to claim that which was theirs by right of American citizenship—the right to vote.
There can be no words of explanation by any imperial wizard or potentate created by any secret body which can overshadow the feeling of disgust, repugnance and resentment which must sweep over every fair minded person when such facts are brought to light.
The story of the visitor to that little Florida town, who escaped danger in the clothes after escaping the fire and bullets which destroyed the home and snuffed out the lives of her relatives must of necessity bring home the real truth of what the Klan stands for better than any printed declarations can.
There can be no doubt but that the spirit which the very name of this organization engenders is a menace to American peace, harmony and law.
It can serve no good purpose. Already the spirit of mob murder and violence in the name of law and order has made law a mockery and justice an impossibility in all quarters of America. North, South, East and West have had their orgies of lynching, mining and roasting of human beings, American citizens, in spite of established law. Why should such spirit be further encouraged?
Those who fight and oppose the spread of the insidious propaganda of this organization are helping to guarantee and perpetuate the sanctity of law and the more efficient operation of the constitution.
Those who would spread Christianity, preserve the sanctity of the home, the chastity of womanhood and American ideals by depriving their fellows of their constitutional rights, making them, their wives and children pay with their lives for daring to defile them, and seizing the sanction which has maintained itself by the co-operation and mutual support of all of its parts.
THE NEW YEAR.
Twelve months of the New Year, 1921, will soon lay ahead of us like the unseen and unused days of the existence of a new born babe. They will face us each in their turn like the clean white, unrestricted segments of a new parchment which the hand white, will unroll before each and all of us. When each successing day they will come aewkween and a new possibility of achievement either for good or ill, for advancement or retrogression, for benefit or injury, for service or for sloth. How these precious hours, days, weeks and months of this New Year will be used depends solely upon us as individuals who make up an American group. The way in which we as individuals face the future will determine the character of that future, our group. And to us must come the realization that our new group is in which we keep them affects more than our individual selves.
During the year just past we made tremendous strides toward a fuller co-operative spirit and a racial pride which showed itself in cooperating for the success of racial enterprises and projects.
During the coming year such a spirit must be intensified. It must be increased. It must operate more nearly among each of the new group than 400,000. That this may be so, let us each resolve to show ourselves more ready to co-operate in every movement which has as its aim, our increased good. Let us preach continually a greater faith in our own possibilities for accomplishment, urging every individual among us to prepare more fully to fill a definite place in our racial life.
It will encourage the founding and maintenance of bigger and better businesses by lending to those already established our heavy patronage and help, acting only that they give the return the maximum of efficiency and service.
Let us encourage more thrift, among us using to a greater extent the means now being placed at our disposal by banks and the government, thus more firmly establishing a financial foundation. Let us lend ourselves as ready to co-operate with those fair-minded among our neighbors for more harmonious relations in our civic life in America as in former years, bearing in mind that our aim is full, free, equal and complete enjoyment of the rights and privileges guaranteed to us under the Constitution of the United States. Let us above all things remember that faith in ourselves alone will finally win out. That by right of accomplishment, we are as truly American as others, that America has been helped to its place as a prosperous nation by our efforts, that it owes to us the same opportunity for helping in its advancement as it gives us the same opportunity for helping in our own progress, and that the right to help in its production, share its benefits and enjoy its property being careful as well to perform fully and well those duties of good and productive citizenship which habitation in it places upon us.
THRIFT IN SCHOOLS.
Thrift banks are being opened in the Negro School's of Dallas and they should be heartily encouraged by every parent and guardian. We will mean if consistently supported, that children while their habit forming period will be trained in that most important of all habits—saving. We need more consistent savers. Wealth is power.
We are powerless because we are poor. We are poor because we have failed to spend less than we earned. Incomes are desirable. Consistent saving makes them possible.
If our children begin now to learn the value of saving, how much money now saving makes future welfare possible they will then be assured complete economic dependence in the days which are to come.
It is the duty of every parent to encourage this movement.
The Red convention in Russia seems to confound the word destruction with reconstruction. We favor sensible, sane American reconstruction and seek the destruction of nothing but those durable soil qualities of some Americans which have made some parts of America a veritable Russia for us.
The Japanese will not urge a recognition of racial equality at this assembly of the League of Nations. She will "patiently bide time until an opportune moment presents itself." That may now embarrass moment to some who has so strenuously earned it.

ARKANSAS STATE SUPREME COURT REVERSES SENTENCES OF DEATH.
A decision of great interest to every person who has real of the Phillips County, Arkansas, rots of October 1919, is the reversal of December 6 by the State Supreme Court of the sentences to death of Ed. Ware, Will Wordwell, Albert Gillen, Joe Fox, John Martin and A.B.anks. These are six of the twelve men who were sentenced to death for participation in the murder of Colored share-croppers and tenant farmers to bring through the courts an end to vicious roling of these farmers under the share-cropping system of the South. These cases were appealed to the State Supreme Court of Arkansas. On March 30 that court reversed the Phillips County Circuit Court on the ground that the lower court had rendered improperly the verdict, and remanded the cases for a new trial. At the same time it affirmed the verdict of death in the six remaining cases. Ed Ware and William Wordwell were convicted of the murder and they were reconvicted and resentenced to death. Attorneys for the men then reposed the case again to the Arkansas State Supreme Court.
While the cases were again being reviewed by the Supreme Court a most amazing step was "knew by Charles H. Brough, Brougher of Arkansas." Pressure was brought to bear on Governor Brough by the Helena Post of the American Legion, the Civitan Club of Helena, the Lions Club of Helena, the Committee of Seven that originally investigated the alleged uprising of the police, and the Attorney General's attorney of that county not to grant executive clemency to any of the Colored men in the event the Supreme Court of the State affirmed the decision of the lower court. The Governor Brough then took a step which apparently was a deliberate attempt to influence the decision of the court, when on November 16 he issued a long statement to the press giving his reasons for believing that the Colored men were guilty. The decision of the court was not rendered until December 6. The action of Governor Brough was carried out in Little Rock in its issue of November 17, protested against his action in an editorial headed, "Why Rush The 'case' in which it said: "*******the Arkansas Democrat must voice its wonder at the sudden clamor which has resulted in the somewhat premature announcement that a proclamation of execution is to be issued in the cases of the twelve Negroes now under death sentence for their part in the Elaine troubles*******. Is the governor's office, or are the visiting delegation from Phillips County, in possession of advance information as to the disposition of these pending cases? "The Arkansas Democrat must regret that in the closing act of the tragedy of Elaine, there should be allowed to come in further evidences of undue and unseemly haste" ******.
"Let us not speed these cases unduly. Let the Courts function, and when they have completed their work, if there is to be no executive clemency, let the sentence fall." If a Southern newspaper thus finds it necessary to take the governor to ask an idea can be gained as to the impropriety and injustice of his action.
In spite of these efforts, the State Supreme Court revered the verdict of the Phillips County Court, basing the reversal on the exclusion of Negroes from juries in the county, this being in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The cases are again renamed and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has from the beginning fought these cases unrelentingly, and deserves great credit for the fact that up to this time it has saved the men from death although they were condemned to die more than a year ago. The victory of December 6 offers great hope for the eventual freedom of not only these men but also all African-Americans serving prison terms in the state legislative of Arkansas—New York Are.
WHO HAS ADAM'S WILL!
Will some one please send out a search warrant and a sufficient staff of investigators to "run down" Adam's will? A good and intelligent friend of ours in conversation the other day—it was a rainy day calculated to bestr sober thinking—and this friend he wishes to see Adam's Will in order that he may observe with his own eyes where Adam's endowed and bequested for all time the rights, privileges and amenities for a certain group of people generally known at "white"; to have and hold, and keep to themselves the honorable and craved title of "Superior Race."
Who in the dickens has that will? The finding of it would stop a lot of argument. It would help the Japanese, Chinese, Indian, East and West; the Malays, and those of us who in some degree degree have been bequested some portion of the crimson blood of Africa's sunny soil.
Speaking off hand, without the presence of the wille aforesmited, it does seem like a bit of arrogance and presumption, for a class of people whose ancestry but carries them back to the barbarisms of the dark ages to tell us the superiority and deny any portion thereof to any other division of mankind.
Africa, dear old Africa, that so many Colored Americans scorn and ridicule, have more unexcavated civilizations of superior achievements than this low ground of American sorrow ever heard about. Go into the Art Museums of Chicago and New York or Washington, look at the originals there preserved, and then continue to talk about superiority!
It's all bosh and poppycock! A nation or an individual are superior only as the great soil of justice and right are developed. Might does not always make right, nor does brute force make for superiority in the things that count. We were for a long time inclined to call man the "superior" to man beyond question that she is the equal of man at all stages of the game.
The white races of the world are fighting with their backs to the wall. Whatever degree of superiority they have attained, has not been because of their color, but in spite of it. Superiority is assuredly not a matter of color but of opportunity. There are notable instances of so called heathen from the jungles of Africa who have been taken out of their environment, trained for the larger fields of life, who have demonstrated the truth that "superiority" is another word for opportunity. Who has Adam Will's WII-Perseico—Associated Negro Press.
RACE INDIVUALITY.
Recently the Portland Times had a very thoughtful editorial upon "California's Problem is America's Problem." In the course of the editorial the editor says: "The American Negro is a revised edition of the American white man. He is today the product of the white man's making. To say that he differs other than color of skin and physical contour we be interested in the mildly. He has imbibed every idea that has been given to the world."
It is indeed that the Negro's credit that he has absorbed and assimilated Caucasian civilization so remarkably well. The Caucasian, especially the Anglo-Saxon, has produced wonderful results in the way of theoretical science, applied science, sanitation, manufacturing, business, commerce, law and government. And we see the result of the Caucasian's mastery of bridge, telephone, telegraph, wireless telegraph, vlascope, phonograph, X-ray, electric light, electric car, floating palace, locomotive and automobile, in the vast industrial enterprises and the political genius which could evolve such a strong republic as the United States of America.
China and India have been unable to appropriate the Caucasian's theoretical and applied science and commercial and political efficiency. The Caucasian has been able to produce the money of Japan, and India with her three hundred millions is at the mercy of Scotland.
The Negro has been an apt pupil of the Caucasian, but if the Negro is properly to fulfill his destiny he must be something more than "a revised edition of the American white man." The recent world war, the strife between labor and capital, the food and rent profiteers, and mob violence, has the Caucasian's ethics not yet match the ethics of death of Naurth.
While the Negro should learn everything the Caucasian can teach him, he should not infate everything he does. The twentieth century civilization and Christianity is observed in a cross materialism which takes away the spirit of love and deprecates the spiritual side of human nature. There is no such thing as a human being who is not yet perfect and the Negro cannot fulfill his destiny as a race by cannibalizing his own individuality becoming "the twisted edition" of that which is imperfect. However, much the Negro my learn of the art and institutions of civilization, he must not know his racial soul. His faith in God, his openism, his warm heart and his musical nature represent the true nature of a human being. He is not a plete reflection and an earlier edition of some other race—Negro World.

TREASURY ISSUES NEW SAVINGS SECURITIES FOR 1921
"Make yourself the present of the Savings habit this Christmas, advice be given all Americans by the Treasury Department.
Washington, Dec. 30. Assuring the state of the United States of Treasury Savings Movement is here to stay and that the opportunity will be given all persons in 1921 to save money. Government Savings Securities, Secretary David F. Honton of the Treasury Department has issued the follo
Two new Treasury Savings securities will be issued during the coming year. The Treasury Savings Stamp is a $25 Treasury Savings Certificate. The $1 stamp will be non-interest bearing, will be bright red in color, imprinted on a green background. The $25 Repurchase Certificate design and terms to the $100 and $1,000 Registered Treasury Savings Certificates, which will also be offered in the new 1926 design and terms to the $100 and $1,000 Registered Treasury Savings Certificates will supply a $1 unit for saving and a registered Government security in the form of a $100 certificate conveniently purchased through the accumulation of the $1 Treasury Savings Stamps. More important still, the $1 unit will be the most attractive line of Government savings securities, the $1 stamp and the $100 Registered Treasury Savings Certificate, place the Treasury Savings movement on a solid peacefelt basis. The small amount of government war time seals on the $5 William Smith series in 1921 series, and the 25 cent Thrift Stamp, will also be offered in no change in the Thrift Stamp.
Demand Growing.
Notwithstanding the reaction since the armistice from habits of saving, and the natural tendency during the Bonds and Victory notes at current market prices, the demand for the savings securities has continued to increase. As the security markets become more settled, Treasury savings securities, bearing interest at 4 per cent compounded annually, State and local taxes and from the normal Federal income tax, and redeemable substantially on demand, should prove increasingly attractive, to the multitude of small investors. With these considerations in mind, the Treasury is committed to the purchase of Treasury savings securities over the counter, at post offices and banks throughout the country, should pay an increasingly important part in the current finance
To this end, the Treasury is also committed to the continuance of the federal government in Washington and in the several Federal districts. This organization endeavors to promote the popular purposes of government, develops and protects the secondary markets for liberty bonds and securities, and protects the issues of Government securities, and unites the efforts of all helpful agencies, educational, educational, commercial and social, in a broad savings campaign to make permanent the habits of the United States Government securities. Its work along these lines will be intended.
The Treasury Savings Movement has already demonstrated its usefulness in disseminating economic conditions throughout the country and disseminate sound economic conditions to the nation of the Savings Division this year, not only in promoting the sale of Government Savings Securities and other financial products for Liberty bonds, but in establishing widespread hubs of Thrift and Savings institutions as meeting a great national need. The recognition has been made possible through empirical observations of great national organizations that the thrift office be continued and that the office be active co-operation in the movement.

Presidents of women's organization

ganizations.
The work of the Savings Division
has been splendidly successful in the schools, with the children as well as with the leaders of educational institutions. The committee of State Superintendents of Public Instruction, which has been appointed to urge every State Superintendent and Commissioner of Education to install thrift courses in every school, has been working in practice of the principles taught by offering means for sound investment. The Committee declared, "We believe that instruction in economic principles and project practice in the schools, and we urge the prompt adoption of the new Thrift Education in all State and local educational institutions."
In responding to 'these demands from great national organizations, the $25 Treasury Savings Stamp during 1921 its campaign to spread broadcast the essential facts relative to wise saving and spending and interest of new capital. The savings securities to be offered have also been introduced to the investment of new capital. The savings $25 Treasury Savings Stamp and the $25 Treasury Certificate, for example, come as a result of the work of the Treasury Department in the plants of the country. FUNDS FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF BISHOPS' COUNCIL INCREASED BY $241.25.
Despite the extreme cold weather of the past, few days and the holiday maze the Committee on the Holiday Maze made substantial progress in collecting funds. Our last Sunday morning committee, made an appeal to the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of St. Louis, $100.00 was given him for the fund. This church, says Prof. Hartle, has always rendered assistance to our people here. Hartle says for our people here, "He has church and was listened to with warm attention. He will make special care of the day and expresses himself as being confident that he will receive further liberal donations." He says the new church building is rapidly being finished. The window is being placed. He hopes to be ready to enter the new church early next month and is preparing for the occasion. He feels sure that with the aplendid assistance the people of Dallas are giving him through the window, he will be ready to entertain the Bishop Council when it convenes in St. Louis.
St. Charles Lodge No. 21, K. of P. St. Charles the Great, the committee of the Tuesday night. When this pledge was subscribed it was announced that the committee would encourage the committee and to show the interest of its membership in the movement, it sent its check to the committee.
Mr. J. H. Hunt, founder and Grand Master of the Loyal Friends of America, phoned the chairman of the commission for $28.00. He and the Loyal Friends of America is a young Order in the fraternity of the Loyal Friends of America at heart and is glad to contribute its share toward the entreaten mentor of the Bishops' Council.

—Say Brother, she is a PEACH and a SCREAM! Hair long enough to be fixed in any style and so soft and glossy. Those Velvet Brown preparations sure enough "got it" for her.
—and HER SKIN—WILL the all blacks, the blockheads, pimples, splatches and snarworms are gone. Say Friend, her hair is much lighter that you wouldn't think she was the same girl. She "sit!" nothing but soft, tender looking and pure Velvet!
And did you see old VELT BROWN "himself"? I thought that "Joker" would look AWful WURST when he got back from the "COTTON PATCH" but he was wise and carried the Doctor's Velvet Brown Poe with him and he came back looking like a "State Street Chuck."
We have simply got to hand it to that kind Doctor for he put a "Kick" in his Face and Hair Preparations that will "get it in every way."
Velvet Brown Preparations are used by distinctive people every where for they have proven themselves to be the best.
