ONE DAY 25TH— TEXAS AND THE LYNCHING RECORD. TEXAS AND THE LYNCHING RECORD. MEMBER OF CIF MIDDLE EAST FIRST IN SERVICE The announcement, of the American lynching record for 1920 by Tuskegee Institute shows that the total number of lynchings in America was 61-22 less than for 1919, that there were 56 instances in which officers of the law prevented lynching, 10 of these instances being in Northern and 46 in Southern States, and that to Texas belongs the honor of having outlynched every other state. The decrease in the number of lynchings and the increased number of instances in which prisoners were protected and lynchings prevented by officers of the law is highly gratifying. It is significant of the fact that in all probability the American conscience is becoming more awake to the fact that its institutions are endangered in proportion as the lynching spirit is encouraged and allowed to grow and that a constantly increasing proportion of it and its perpetrators is gradually causing its decrease. MEMBER NATIONAL NEGRO PRESS ASSOCIATION. Published every Saturday morning in the year of publication Avenue BY THE DALLAS EXPRESS PUBLISHING COMPANY. (incorporated) Dallas, Tex. Numerous instances during the past year have showed that lynching is absolutely preventable. It has no reason for being other than the toleration of the mob which because of a mistaken sense of the importance of its members, abetted in many cases by a realization that public sentiment allows it, characterizing the officers of the law and renders them negligent of their oblivion. Nanblyfe Office Frost and Front, Independent Life Building. The fifty-six instances in which officers of the law prevented lynchings are proof enough that public sentiment may be so strong that the law cannot be enforced and that officers of the law in some instances cannot protect their prisoners err greatly. Prisoners can be protected in all cases even in the smallest hamlet if only public sentiment be so changed as to regard mob rule as the menace to established law. SUBSCRIPTIONS IN ADVANCE One Year. $3.00 Six Months. $3.00 Three Months. 1.00 Single Copy. 10 NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC An announcement of retention upon the character, standing or reputation of any person, firm or corporation of the United States, home, business or the attention of the publishers. We have always contended that the greatest tribunal of the world is public opinion. What it sanctions may be easily accomplished. What it repudiates may easily be prevented. The sanction of mob murders by public opinion has caused its spread in America. The record shows that no section of the country is free from its taint; no excuse is too frivolous to its persecution; the provoking causes have run the gamut—from rape to jumping a labor contract and receiving a stay of death sentence from the courts when another had confessed the crime he was accused; the murder of a woman once been accused of the罪恶 the mob mobs have had numbered among them ex-congresmen, ex-sheriffs, officers of the law and city officials. Entered at Post Office at Dallas Mississippi, 1872. Act of Congress, March 1872. IMPORTANT: No subscriptions for a period less than 18 months. Payment required. Postage $1.00. THE DALLAS EXPRESS The sanction of mob violence instead of due process of law will do more to disrupt the general American scheme of established law and do it sooner, than Bolshievism and all of its kindred progeny. It represents American's greatest menace. has never hosted the white feather, neither it has it disgraced by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the flannel mouth. It is a plain, every day, sensible, conservative newspaper, which trims no sail to catch the passing brenc; it professes a patriotism as broad as our country. Its love of even handed justice covers all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are propering. Boys of the press come up and stand with us. This ground is holy. W. E. KING. It is to be hoped that if the decrease in its perpetration during the year just passed has been due to an awakened public conscience and consciousness to its power for evil, the agencies which have worked to accomplish such an awakening may be provided power and freedom for greater exertion in this direction. This may be accomplished if only all agencies of public instruction, leaders of towns and cities, editors, ministers and moulders of opinion everywhere preach more fully the duty of Americans everywhere to stand up for the exercise of law in order to prevent the abuse of power due process of law comes to be generally considered a crime, lynching will cease. Those who control and direct public opinion can bring such consideration into being. The fact that our own state of Texas has led in mob murders during the past year must come as a direct contradiction to the statements of the Texas Representative, who so hotly defended the law in his speech on the recent Congressional hearing. While it is true that the charges produced there do not apply in particular to Texas, the fact that lawlessness of another and just as malignant type has characterized Texas more than any other American state during the past year gives ample room for a strong doubt as to whether the reported disturbance of public opinion can be "satisfactorily justified" in his statement in his statement. SATURDAY, JANUARY 8, 1921. OUR CITY GOVERNMENT. Certainly the strenuous repudiation of the effort of those who caused the investigation must be mitigated by the realization that at least in one respect Texas has unworthy distinguished herself for one kind of lawlessness and that removal of all ground for such charges should be accomplished before so great a defense is attempted The recent announcement of Mayor Woochenck of his refusal to run again for the office of chief city attorney received with much regret by all classes of Dallas citizens, but that he has in truth been the Mayor of the whole city and has directed his city officials to benefit of all of its citizens. His record has been commendable and satisfactory to as high a degree as possible. The record of Texas in lynching is indeed unenviable. This fact renders less potent or liable to be carefully considered, any retort that lawlessness is not confined to Texas or the South. Such is undoubtedly the case but it cannot argue potently in defense of the actual record of lawlessness which Texas has established. We agree with all of those Texas who urge that Texas reduces its lynchings for the New Year. We go even further; we urge that Texas abolish lynching; we urge its perpetration mutually by building up a stronger security for allowing the law to take its course. The law will take its course; and its works will be more through if this sentiment become increasingly in favor of it. In making such a statement it is not to be reasoned that during the attack there has not been a feeling of dissatisfaction at the course pursued by the attacker and that he is be said beyond any danger of successful contradiction that whatever is being done against the bitterest enemy cannot charge him with having been unfathomable to the attacker. The law is sure where the crime is great—as sure as the mob—it wait only for the guilt of the accused to be established. But such a wait is necessary. It is only fair and just. It protects the innocent from summary action—but why argue for law when it has been justified by hundreds of practice and been found to have been preferred over mob rule by every nation which has long endured. Udner, his administrative Dallas has proposed and developed in his progressive attitude has made him a leader. He has brought to successful accomplish- Texas can reduce its lynching record. Officers of the law can deter mobs if they will. If Peace officers in every Texas town and city can stop lynching, the number of officers as Sheriff Harston of Dallas County and the sheriff of Fort Worth, lynchings could not and would not occur. But for these men the total of Texas lynchings would be greater by at least two and the shame of Texas devotees and citizens in Our group cannot but remember him especially for the generosity of his attitude toward park and walk. He was a man of great kindness. Though not the originator of them, adopted toward them such an attitude as to make their more effusive. These sheriffs were not compelled to use force. They only realized their duty and respected the increased efficiency of the established law over mob law enough to guarantee even by outwitting the mob, a fair trial to their accused prisoners. One of the prisoners was acquitted. The other was as surely hanged till dead as ten and twelve, and in that inception could accomplish the state was saved. Our retreat at his refusal to run again is genuine and in our hope to help him. We have, except to the boss of his ability, the kind of interest and help in Dalat's development because, characterizes his refusal to help his administration. We believe in the possibilities of Texas for un- old accomplishment, but we explore its lynching record for the year of 1920. It is the one great blot upon a page of wonderful accomplishment along other lines. While as yet local politives have not warmed up enough to catch much aspeculation as to the character of the next group of our esteemed leaders, it is clear that we begin to determine in their minds the courses which they will pursue and the lines along which their choosing of executives will take. We sincerely hope that the same, attendant upon the realization that in this particular type of lawfulness Texas holds away all others in America, may render its citizen and officers of the law eager to co-operate more fully for its elimination. May it come to pass more and more that in every town and hislet of Texas mob murdered by the law, the Texas realize more fully that every accused man is innocent until proven guilty and that in the establishment of guilt or incriminable delibration is absolutely necessary. The part of city administrations that have their application to the development of our city along special lines, Taken by and large they have been able to determine they have been able to determine they have been from the toast of seconds, would t-end to give the control of the government to corporate inter- We join all other true Texans in their shame at Texas lynching record. We heartily agree that Texas' best resolution for the New Year would be one against nob murder The life and tragic death of Jake Hamon, Oklahoma millionaire, is one more proof of the fact that before we are rich, poor, professional or poverty stricken, we are human subject to all of the temptations and failings of our fellows. To the end that the succeeding administration may follow the lines set forth in the previous story, to carefully view the questions now before the simulateur, and to determine in what respects the present administration has failed of its highest accomplishment, with which the candidates will ally themselves in the coming campaign. To achieve this objective and become able to choose intelligently. The Atlanta State Savings Bank distributed $60,000 to its depositors who were members of its Xmas Savings clubs. This is a Negro institution and its depositors are Negroes. Its accomplishment is commendable. Can Texas equal it? The plan to open a Negro stock exchange is commendable. It is to be hoped however that those who control it will make their policy to bar all "d" cat "stock" and "blue sky" securities. Since the holidays have passed, we are a safe place that many heads of government use to make this presents check out in a month's worth of赘言. The crime wave which is awaiving the entire country may be only another indictment of law enforcement toward law-abiding individuals and enforcement of laws. AMERICA AND THE JEWS. In his sermon at Temple Shaare Emet, Friday night, Rabbi Witt, presented a Christmas message from a Jew to the Christian ministry. It was an appeal for justice to the Jew in response to the racial defamation that is now being broadly circulated in the United States. It is strange, indeed, that there could be any justification for such an appeal in the United States of America, strange that a reputable publisher could be found for charges so utterly preposterous, on the face of them, as the so-called protocols of the "Wise Men of Zion," which pretend to reveal a conspiracy for the domination of the world by Jews, without presenting a particle of real evidence to support a charge so monstrous against a race which for 200 years had to struggle constantly against oppression and persecution for a mere existence. Most of them are, still suffering from the direct poverty, and America has been, and is, to them, a refuge from woes no other race has suffered so long and so unjustly. There have been familes among the Jews, as among other people; there have been dreamers and there have been egegious fools among them, but that there could be found any considerable number of them so bereft of reason as to contemplate world control is unbelievable; and, if such an insanity incapacity exist, that it would have any possibility of success in acquiring dominant political power is too absurd to be credited for a moment. The protocols of the "Wise Men of Zion" are manifestly pure fiction, designed for no other purpose than to arouse race hatred by a lying appeal to race prejudice. It is an attempt to introduce into America the atrocious libels in the pigeons of Eastern Europe have ever found an excuse. Represented Taf, in a speech on this subject, at Chicago the other night, likened the "protocols" to the tales of Bacon Munchauen. They are, it is true, no less beyond belief, but the author of the tales of Munchauen did not expect anyone to believe them, they had no sinister purpose. Mr. Taft, his characteristic outspokenness, strongly denounced these publications. "One of the chief causes of suffering and evil in the world today," he said, "is race hatred, and any man who stimulates that hatred has much to answer for. When he does this by the circulation of unfounded and unjust charges and the arousing of mean and groundless fears, his fault is more to be condemned." That Mr. Taft spoke at all on this subject is evidence that 4 the charges, absurd as they are, have in their subtle appeal to such hatred and fears as he speaks of the elements of serious danger to that good will toward me which is the fundamental principle of the spirit of Christ and the spirit of America. Rabbi Witt, in his address Friday night, quoted the resolutions adopted in Boston this month at the meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, and they are so pertinent, so pointed, and so filled with the Christ spirit that we reproduce them here: Whereas, for some time past there have been in circulation in this country that efforts to create race prejudice and arouse animosity against our Jewish fellow-citizens and containing charges so preoccupative as to unworthy of credence, be it the Resolved, That the Federal Council of the Churches of America, impressed by the need at this period of our national existence for unity and brotherhood, deplores all such cruel and unwarranted attacks upon our Jewish brotherhood, and in a spirit of good will extends to them an expression of confidence in their patriotism and their good citizenship, and earnestly admonishes our people to express disapproval of all actions that are against the deoxygenation of our national unity through archaic racial divisions in our body politic. That utterance is both Christian-like and patriotic. It is at once a declaration of confidence in the integrity of Jewish citizenship, and a conservation of that tolerance which is the greatest of all fees to Christian civilization, Christian progress, and Christian government. Not only is such propaganda antagonistic to Christian principles, but it is no less antagonistic to Jewish principles, and no less antagonistic and land. There should be no qualification to American disapproval. OUR HISTORY OF VOTING. After the revolution, before the 15th Ann. Jan. 6-The attack on the Rapples in the midst of an assault the evil of lynching, in evidence by the ringing editorials that appear in the daily press, of which Grand Rapids Herald is an example: "Down at Wise, Va., they have a sheriff who might well be held up to the authorities for public safety officials of the country. In the jail at Wise is a Norwegian man, who was assaulted and robbed of an aged man. On Saturday a mob stormed the jail and attempted to take Williams from the jail, but the mob was able and of so mean proportions. Other sheriffs might have opened the doors 't the jail, or uncriminously set the man on fire, and would be lynchers. But not Sheriff Corder. The first attack upon the jail one man said to have been the leader of the mob, was killed by the defenders, and the carried storming weapons. The man mounted a machine gun on the step of the jail and ordered his men to "shoot to kill" if further attacks "Of course, the lives of the member of the mob were undone and the life of the miserable criminal whom the sherif protected. But the sherif is placed in office to uphold the law. The sherif has a fair trial. The law denies to the mob the right to summary trial.
