"MORAL GOWN" IS SCORNED BY
WOMEN OF NEW YORK CITY.
New York, Feb. 17—Thatt "interdenominational gown" must all appear in New York, and may even look well, on some. But the verdict of New York about it is not clear. You know, of course, what the "interdenominational gown" means. It standardize women's costume, and at the same time get them away from the standardize women's costume, and at the same time get them away from the standardize women's costume, and at the same time get them away from the moment. It must not drop more than three inches above the ground, and nor must it elevate be more than seven and a half inches above the ground, and nor must it figure, nor must it be made of any sort of diaphanous skin. Nothing to make a blind man regret his infirmity. New Yorkers, of it recently gave an immediate mirtful rax. Here are a few of the

LESS, EXPECTORATORS.
Norfolk, Va. Feb. 17—Denyting that she is dead, Manielle Smith, unique singer of popular jazz and blues songs, died on Friday at the Theatre here Monday night before a crowded house. She was accompanied by a band and instrumental musicians. For the past two weeks rumors have been going throughout the East Coast that she is a member of a traveling concert company to stardom in less than two months, has been assaulted and killed. Friends of her who knew her best say she has not been spoiled by success, but she is a member of people who come to hear her at my concerts, expects much, and do not intend that they shall be disbanded. She has negraph records and they want to hear me sing these songs the same as she did. For that reason, I am taking with me my original jazz bounces, who are in my opinion, the threat players of the music industry. Another thing, I feel that my audiences want to see me become a musician or paths in frequenting the
shops of the most fashionable modists in America, with the results that I believe my audience will like my performance, that the best is none too good for the public that pays to hear a singer. SERVICE
The greatest pleasure ever made possible to members of our group in Dallas is now being experienced by them in provision for entertainment of the Bishops' Council and Connectional Assembly of the A. M. E. Chureches of the world. Dallas heartily welcomes its coming and gladly places at its disposal far from insignificant facilities for hospitality and entertainment.
Dallas does this in knowledge that this Council represents an institution unique in the world—dedicated and maintained as a constantly progressing proof of Negro capacity and ability for organization, maintenance and manipulation of their own affairs.

The A. M. E. Church, of which this Council is in reality the legislative body, was brought into being more than 100 years ago by the same kind and brand of prejudices which still thrives to thwart men of their full privilege and prestige. Richard Allen, ostracized by a Philadelphia congregation because of his color, lead a small group of his fellows into his blacksmith shop and there in protest against the discriminatory Christianity, established the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

It has grown. It has prospered. It has become that for which it was intended—a church for men who demanded a real religion—a freedom from dogma and a consecration to progressive brotherly love.
This church numbers its members by the hundred of thousands and its property in houses of worship, schools and colleges run well into the millions of dollars in value. It is an all Negro institution. From the day of its beginning until now it has been owned, developed and controlled by Negro brain and capital. His schools and colleges have turned out in an ever increasingly efficient stream, young men and women prepared for the work of a fellow. Its directing book have always been and still are, men broad of vision, keen of intellect and heartily devoted to the increase of prosperity both civic and religious wherever they are found.

CIVILIZATION OR BARBARISM—WHICH?
THE DALLAS EXPRESS
Many have viewed the many manifestations of unrest in America with feelings and ideas as numerous as these uprisings and manifestations have been. They have defined these struggles as going on in the face of the same conditions as various and sundry other things which probably have been and are as defined. But too little attention has been paid and is being paid to the advance of barbarism and the seeing increase of bestial propensities as evinced by the various forms of torture and maltreatment now commonly used by Ame-
has never hoisted the white feather, neither has it been disgraced by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the flannel mouth. It is a plain, every day, sensible, conservative newspaper, which trims no sail to catch the pesky flies no doubtful flag; It professes a patriotism as broad as our country. Its love of even handed justice covers all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are not afraid to press come up and stand with us. This ground is holy. W. E. KING.
It has been America's prerogative as the "crudel of democracy" and the "light of Western civilization" to discuss at will the Jewish massacres of Russia, the Armenian atrocities, the German brutalities and the Irish disorders, and characterize the persecution of Jews. It is true that the above named disorders have been far from Christian and lacking sadly in allegiance to the dictates of an enlightened civilization. But we wonder greatly if ever in the history of a civilized nation a more glaring display of cruelty and expression of bestial propenalties was ever staged by citizens, up holders of democracy and devotes of Christianity than the recent burning of the city. The following is an account of the affair as written by a special correspondent of the Tennessee press: "More than 500 persons stood by and looked on while the Negro was slowly burned to a crisp. A few women were scattered among the crowd of Arkansas planters, who directed the grewsome work of avenging the death of O. T. Craig and his daughter, Mrs. C. O. Will
SATURDAY, FEB. 19. 1920.
Not once did the slayer beg for mercy, despite the fact that he suffered one of the most horrible deaths imaginable. With the Negro chained to a log, numbers of the mob placed a small pile of leaves around his feet. Gasoline was then poured on the leaves and the carrying out of the death sentence was under way.
Clean Up And Beautify
Spring is fast approaching, and with the coming there should be an awakening in the minds of every citizen of the world for more beauty, attractive beauty.
Inch by inch the Negro was fairly cooked to death. Every f&x moments fresh leaves were tossed on the funeral pile and until the blaze had passed his way. As the flames were eating away his abdomen, a member of the mob stepped forward and saturated the body with gasoline. It was then only a few moments until the Negro had been reduced to ashes.
Flower planting time is here, Garden planting is also in order. Attractive front yards and productive backyards are made of thrifty home owners and tenants. Paint may be too costly to be used this season but attractively arranged flower beds, lawns free from weeds and landscaping, are the beauty of one's home many fold.
Even after the flesh, had dropped away from his legs, and the flames were leaping toward his face, Lowry retained consciousness. Not once did he whimper or beg for mercy. Once or twice he attempted to pick up the hot ashes in his hands and thrust them into his mouth in order to hasten death. Each time the ashes were kicked out of his reach by a member of the mob."
The beauty or unattractiveness of any neighborhood is the sum total of beautiful or ill kept condition of the neighborhood and yards of that neighborhood.
Occurences such as this do not indicate an over mastering desire that savagery and barbarism be totally forgotten. They make us feel rather than our civilization is a sham, our law and democracy almost a mockery. The fact that they are encouraged by the silence of our friends and the acquiescence of our guardians of the law, make us well nigh ready to prophesy the absolute and ultimate degeneracy of American law and constituted authority to a state of barbarism, where none shall be safe.
Civic pride and beauty depend in their final analysis upon the individual pride and love of order. Let us make our homes more attractive toward the spring renewal of our several neighborhoods by doing our share of beautifying and rendering attractive our own places of abode.
Such a degeneracy is as sure to come as lynching is to go, if not speedily checked. Will Americans never realize that with every lynching, some integral and fundamental part of the fabric of American ideals is destroyed and lost? Can they not see that by allowing the perpetration of such an no punishable crime, the population of murderers, in whom the love of law will soon have no place?
The Japanese question will cause the American mind soon to reach the point where it tends to tense on nearly all questions in which emotions and prejudices are present.
America may well awake to the fact that she must now choose between continued success and gradual retrogression into a state beside which Turkey, Germany and Russia are models of peaceable and Christian governments. But her greatest concern may well be the building up of an armament within her own borders for the maintenance of her laws and the inculcation of a general respect for her traditions of honesty of justice and obedience to authority among her citizens. Her greatest menace is that barricade of militarism and negligence that ultimately effect, is encouraging in its attempt at the destruction of her beaten civilization.
Last week American militaries raided a Nicaraguan town and wrecked the newspaper pams. Mob violence in the city led to arrests of the etc. etc., hardly justice and democracy but true American spirit without drunk.
In days of American building, the quality of the patriotism of her citizens was shown by their actions. The Nicaraguan government has 164 gunniness by their talk only.
GOVERNOR COOLIDGE IN ATLANTA.
Vice-President Calvin Coolidge in his Atlanta speech of a few days told members of our group that despite all that had been done for them by lovers of humanity in the North, Massachusetts in particular, the work of friends of the Negro in the South had been infinitely greater. He closed his speech by saying "You have no better friends than those who live about you here and contribute always to your welfare, your success and your happiness and if you want to make good for the work that has been done by the men and women of Massachusetts, then continue in your well doing; continue to co-operate with the people around you here; continue in your industry; in your work day by day. I want an American to see you improve character; to see you progress in your welfare; to see you have done, the very best there is in the character of men and women, and in the devotion always, plified from time to time to America, to its flag, to its institutions and to its preservation forever."
America fought to make the world safe for democracy. Now she is building a bigger navy and trying to make the world safer at peace. Some job, some reasoning Japan and America have discarded the military that has allowed somebody to remain a gentleman. Who was it? Neither Japan nor America have found out. You can't keep a good man dwn but you can make his nightly tired of trying to rise by peaceable means.
We agree with Governor Coolidge. We have no better friends than those who live about us who are our friends. We are glad to co-operate with them always and it is our aim as well to preserve and even glorify our record of service to America and her
Spring, gardens are good investments. They encourage thrift by making greater savings possible.
We engage with any fear ever warned Woodrow Wilson against the "Idea of Murch."
It would not have been out of place however for the Governor to have urged those who are our friends to more clearly declare themselves in order that our allegiance to them might be whatever your temptations may be—that which you have exemmefficient, and their friendship more positive for good, especially in Georgia.
"He kept us out of war" and "he's beating us out of peace"—but not for long.

THE MIRROR OF
PUBLIC OPINION
MORE NEGROISM IS RIGHT.
the editor of a local contemporary think tank quarters when in the concerning them he stated that "some Negroes in Pike loathe Leslieism and Olivierism when with Negroism." Such a declaration, we see form of disconcerting bomb, but a short of a model boomeram. But we that as a race need most is more than the verbal expression of its color, and that a race need more than a greater show of race loyalty, as the editor is entirely correct, and that a amen and amen.
At some time we are moved also to inquire failed to be the guiding influence of our old ad LILLIEism, and that any attach to scholarly preachments their tongue that even their associations to serve as a leader. Except for kkw, the author of the edition of the book, we were not with his hands and feet are tied, his wife, we would be led to wonder if the full meaning of the term "Negroism from thinking that it is any tender regainful his anxiety to be the faithfulness to the game of the masses, but the time is no longer the masses into believing that the accession to an accomplishment in their hard work of race loyalty, and with it the people are more than the race of our needs more honest banks of that host which host follows, to lead. It is little wonder that the group of that group standard first, last and loyal sees with wide open and search moves with unshucked feet, thinks we wind dares to speak with a frank and tolerates no power controlling his be hand of masters. Personal favors, but rather public services for his wife his wits up. "The expense of his constituents." Nitely no use of the editor noting no discussion of Olivierism over against Leah with about his political matters. Perhap spot by our so doing, but to us this down, and it is the purpose of this sheet in it hits or hurts. Playing "the dog that those have the interests of our local oil or still our pen. recognizes the need to every member in the garb of a leader—Pittubu
Evidently the editor of a local contemporary thought to have hurried a bomb into our quarters when in the conclusion item of his last week's editorial column he stated that "some Negroes in Pittsburgh are doing a lot of yelling about Leislaism and Olverism when what the race needed most was more Negroism." Such a declaration, we repeat, we evidently intended for some form of disconcerting bomb, but as far as we are able to see, it is nothing short of a model boomerage. Hearly we agree with the editor that what we as a race need most is more Negroism of the sort that runs deeper than the verbal expression of its existence. No untruth is more evident than the fact that a ringing call for a greater show of race loyalty, as we regard the term Negroism to mean. The editor is entirely correct, and to his statement we are moved to say amen and amen.
But at the time we are moved also to inquire why this has lofty sentiment so long failed to be the guiding influence of the author? Or again, what weight should any attach to scholarly preachments from those whose behavior so belies their tongue that even their association is spurned by those whom they feign to serve as a leader. Except for knowing what powers they are to serve a L.D.LEHIRFGKQJCMPWYPX@Z÷¢HIRDLTNSUU they are that dictate his utterances, were it not that we are well informed by what obstacles his hands and feet are tied, his voice stiffened and his well-earned the full meaning of the term "Negroism" which he has employed.
We are far from thinking that it is any tender regard for the well being of this great group of ours that now leads Mr. Vann to pledge of "race loyalty." No overwhelming anxiety to be the faithful SERVANT of the masses is burdening his soul. No doubt he would be very much pleased if he could restore himself to his former position of confidence and trust in the thoughts of the masses, but the time is no longer when any so-called leader can fool the people into believing that the achievement of selfish personal ambitions is an accomplishment in their behalf. This kind of Negrinoism, this sort of race loyalty, has too long furnished Negroes in this country, and has led to the substantial recognition and progress, and with it the people are through. In very truth this race of ours needs more honest-to-goodness loyalty not only in the ranks of that vast host which follows, but as well among those who assume to lead. It is little wonder that thinking men, and women, too, have taken the step of repudiating those whose past show of loyalty runs little deeper than the word of mouth. According to our best judgment, true loyalty to any group or standard means honest and unbridled efforts in behalf of that group or standard first, last and all the time. He who is genuinely loyal sees with wide open and searching eyes, acts with unfettered hands, moves with unshackled feet, thinks with a free and open mind, and in the end dares to speak with a frank and unimpaired tongue. Such an individual tolerates no power controlling his will. He is no well aware of the power of his own strength, not his single bent, but rather public service his foremost concern. He does more than echo the wishes of the "higher up." He seeks no "place in the sun" at the expense of his constituents.
There is absolutely no use of the editor pouting now because we have 'taken up the discussion of Olivierism over against Lelelieau, holding up to our voters the truth about his political matters. Perhaps we are touching Mr. Vann's tender spot by our so doing, but to us this matters little. The truth must be known, and it is the purpose of this sheet to make it known regardless of whom it hits or hurts. Playing "the dog in the manger" role, attempting to thwart those who have the interests of the whole people at heart, is not a good idea. The American recognizes the need for more Negroism among Negroes and respectfully recommends the need to every member of our group, including him who poses in the garb of a leader—Pittsburgh American.

A few days ago the Times-Union and other papers published an Associated Press dispatch from Washington from which the following is taken: "The United States was declared to rank ninth among the nations of the world in the general educational level of its people, in a report of the house committee on education, made public today, recommending passage of the Smith-Towner bill to establish a federal department of education with federal aid in increasing educational facilities. The country is trailing behind "most of the civilized world," the report said, from the standpoint of its educational advantages." The statement that eight other nations are better educated than the United States is not true, but we do not believe it is true. We would like to see a list of them. It is generally conceded that the Danes, Swedes and Norwegians lead the people of the United States in education, but if this were true the country would stand sixth—not nine. Unquestionably education is more prevalent in the United States than in any other large nation except Germany. The British are not up with us. The French and Italians are behind and the Russians far behind. Japan has advanced wonderfully in the past few years but it is hardly conceivable that we have advanced to a position of superiority in education to the United States.
We are surprised that a committee of congress should have sponsored such a treatment. We would not have been surprised if the officials of the educational department has done so. More and bigger falsehoods are told by men who propose to do good by telling them than by any other class of men. A book published a few years ago under the auspices of the National Education Association facilities for the Negroes of the South outrageously misrepresented the facilities they already enjoy. It was illustrated and one of the pictures showed what is called a typical Negro cabina. The writer, who has spent all his life in the South, never saw any inhabited cabina as dislipated as the one that was called typical. This same publication valued a Negro school building in Jacksonville at five thousand dollars, though it was three hundred dollars. It was a valuable one to improve the opportunities for the education of the Negroes but it made absolutely a false showing of what was already done for their education.
Army men want hundreds of millions appropriated for defense. They are not always credited with sincerity. The hundreds of millions that would be devoted to this purpose would give them promotion in rank and pay and human nature is much the same in all parts of the world among all classmates. We are not educated themselves; they themselves make men who are educational enthusiasts consider themselves.
We are for education but it is questionable whether the federal government should pay a great part in the education of the people. But even if it should do so we object to argument in favor of its doing so that are based on false or exaggerated statements and we do not believe there are eight nations that are better educated than ours and we know there is no truth in the statement that this country is training behind most of the civilized world from the standpoint of contentment.

There was a time when it was openly held as sound doctrine in the South that the black man had no rights which a white man was bound to respect. That doctrine was wiped out by the Civil War and the Negro was given equal rights with the white man. But the negation of some of these rights continues in practice in some sections of the South, having its final demonstration in lynching. This is the situation which calls for justice for the black man as well as for the white.
The 1920 census shows a remarkable beginn of the Colored population from the cities of the North. Some of this was due to the attraction of high wages, but much of it was caused by the lack of protection under the law.
At the annual Negro Conference held at Tuskegee, last week the fact was emphasized that the question of law and order is one of the most important things which concerns the Negro in the South. The Conference went on record as asking for Negroes "only what the courts above all other agencies should give, impartial justice. If Negroes commit crimes they be punished by the courts and not by mobs. If Negroes are to stay on the soil, there must be better and fairer methods of adjusting so many of the ordinary differences that arise between man and man, when one is white and the other black, than to resort to violence and the terrifying of a whole people.
This is the simple plea of the Negro, and it should appeal to the national prejudice and sense of justice.
We do New Jersey we do not claim any superior virus over the citizens of other States, yet we may modestly take credit for applying a fuller measure of justice to the Negro that is meted out to him in some of the

I am not sure that you have asked me the question relative to how the Sacrament should be made available to the elements. It is a breach of ecclesiastical decency and Christian theatric theatricity of the bread in small pieces to go around taking the bith of consecration to the glass with consecrated wine; or should the communicants be allowed to double around the channel nod of the sacrament. This subject is too hot; and requires too much space for the at this time. Therefore, we hope to take this subject up again in the
