CONTRIBUTE TO THE ORPHANAGE WITH SYSTEM.
Last week we called attention to the fact that the Orphanage at Gilmer, performed a definite service for our people in Texas and should be more hearty and systematically supported by them. We have also been successful in systematically realizing their duty to this institution to the extent of giving hearty to its support. Voluntary contributions among us are comparatively infrequent, due, no doubt, to our failure to fully appreciate our duty in this regard. We have also been successful in systematically realizing their orphanage come from the Negroes of Texas that should not be so. It would not be so were every organization large and small to adopt the system now used by three institutions of the state of which we have New Hope Church of this city, through its pastor, Dr. A. S. Jackson, has set apart one Sunday in the year on which all money collected to, go to this orphanage. The consistent following of the plan results each year in the success of the orphanage in the state and the trouble of personal solicitation of Rev. Dickson or his representative. The last Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pythas of Texas through its Grand Chancellor and Board of Directors contributed 8500 to the institution. The first time this was done the institution which was donated without the expense and trouble of personal solicitation. The last Grand Lodge of Old Fellows of the State of Texas adopted a resolution turning over to the orphanage the receipt of all Thanksgiving day sermons in the jurisdiction — an amount which will prove highly substantial. These free institutions are cited as setting examples well worth being followed by each one of our organizations. Systematic contribution is more acceptable than any other.
If each one of our organizations in Texas were only to realize this fact to the extent of adopting some definite method and time of control, we would be in a position to make its obligations with more definite prospects of readily meeting them. The Orphanage m-ans much to us and to Texas generally.
It fills a definite place in the care of our orphaned children. Every logi, church and individual among us would do well, to include the Orphanage in its multination in the wider budget of current expenses.
In fairness to ourselves and our plain duty to the unfortunate among us we want to make a

Sheriff Hartson Foils Mobe Without Resorting to Force. Prisoner Killed on Return Trip.
David Bunn, Negro, indicted for the sonnational robbery of a camping area and the criminal assault of a criminal trial, remains in the Dallas County jail after two unsuccessful arrests. Worth mobs to remove and lynch him. Humors that a third party was involved in the county jail here were discounted, and no one was arrested who said they are prepared for any trouble which might rise and that 1,000 men could not force a delivery, in the county jail here. A crowd of a crowd of fifty men who attempted to storm the jail at Dallas at 2:25 p.m. on the criminal courthouse steps and said coily: "There's nothing doing. The Negro appears to trial when he is arrested." The court issued an affirmation to admit a search party, and when a committee of the Sheriff keeps in his office for the crowd was orderly, did not incite leadership and organisation and no one was expected from Fort Worth. Expectation from Fort Worth. Addition: The crowd sought a restaurant after a number of them that they would not be in. If they didn't get off the city, I agree with you that the Negro servant Williams said when the Sheriff mobile, "but there will be no lynchings not in Fort Worth and you will be arrested." Worth, Dallas and intermediate towns were buzzing with excitement when the mobs began forming late. The Negro was taken before the court and indicted Thursday afternoon. And indicted Thursday afternoon, he was removed to the Dallas County jail.

We could we ought to be able to do alone." Mr. Hodge is enrolling local Negroes in the Universal Negro Institute to organize a auxiliary here.
Washington, D. C., Oct. 13.—Howard inaugurated the 1921 football season *r*iday, Oct. 7, at Lyndhurst, Ohio, over the Virginia Theological Seminary and College team. Coach Morrison, who led the team to win his football "tricks," but simply had his men use straight football whistle: proved ample to overcome the plucky Virginia. Deneeny, half back, a comparative newcomer, was the individual star of the game, making a thirty yard pass to the Virginia formation. The team showed its strength over its opponents by marching 10 yards to the Virginia, third yard line in
COACH MORRISON PUTTING
HOWARD SQUAD ON EDGE
Washington, D. C., Oct. 13—Coaching W. E. Morrison is still putting the Howard Football squad through the hardest part of the season he started two weeks ago. The daily workouts and scrimmages have not been sufficient for the players on the squad left vacant by last years graduates. The coaches have put together such men as Lawrence, Hurt, Downing, Nurse, and others is seriously felt and will mark the performance of the team. The effort has been put forth to create other work back to its proper direction. The team has caps the progress of the team at present, a full team caps of putting into play the system inaugurated. Team work and not individual "stars is the watchword of the squad. The team rewards and do not reach yet the stage of achievement which every team needs. There are now about forty-four candidates on the field which, at the days go on (will be appreciated by the team) we weather no doubt plays its part in the slowness with which the team works. Very frequently one hears from the casual visitor to our city a statement of surprise at finding no business houses owned and controlled by us who live in the most prosperous business houses. Though such statements may cause us much chagrin and embarrassment, we must admit that they are true. We do operate some places of business which are a credit to our city and we do operate some places of business which are a credit to our city lacking when our possibilities for achievement are compared with our actual accomplishments. We organize organizations for business. We need more confidence in each other. We need less men in business associates for temporary benefit to themselves, for they are only lessening their chances for lasting good. LABOR AND OURSELVES.
LABOR AND OURSELVES.
Last year when the Montreal Conference of Labor Unions passed the resolution permitting all laborers regardless of race to band themselves together and affiliate with it a storm of protest arose from many quarters caused chiefly by color prejudice and a reversal to the age old feelings that Negroes should not belong. Recent developments have done much to prove the fallacy of the arguments of those who opposed this resolution. Labor is fast finding that by harboring this prejudice it is working toward its own undoing and gradually it is leaving its old exclusive processes of operation.
The latest indication of abandonment of this policy is shown by the passing of what is termed an "emergency measure" by the American Federation of Labor as a preliminary to mobilizing the labor force. Negroes are being reduced orderly by the federal Rail Labor Board. and organizers of the American Federation are already instructing heads of local unions to urge the affiliation of Negroes related to the rail industries which comprise six shop crafts.
The railway shop centers where such unionizing will take place are Atlanta, Birmingham, Dallas, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, Knoxville and Memphis, southern Illinois and employed is nearly 10,000 of which number only 2500 are now members of unions.
To the casual observer, it is strange that men, supposed to think in terms of the best interests of their pet projects will allow themselves to be so easily misled by spacious reasonings into the pursuance of a course which they, ultimately must abandon if they hope for success, yet labor leaders have done so. The cause of one laborer is the workers. If labor is to be included in which it hopes to exert it must do it as labor, inclusive of workers of all races and kinds.
We do not here attempt to argue for nor against the right-
ness of the courses which Lebor, as it has existed, has followed.
We do realize though that it has fallen for short in its effectiveness of operation by blindly being influenced by its prejudice preaching officials. Rlots, murders, arson and rapipe have been the glaring proofs of how intensely Labor has worked against itself in excluding the black brother who represented the only weapon which capital could use in maintaining itself against it.
It has always seemed to fail of realizing that black workers have been strike-breakers, not from choice, but because they as illegitimate workers, have had no other course open to them. We confidently expect that, even as the leaders of railroad labor have been forced to pursue their ambitions pursued, others will realize that without a mobilizing of all laborers the objective of none can be gained and consistently held.
AFRICAN IDEAS.
An opinion from a Johannesburg organ, the Bantu, reprinted in the New York Times sheds light of these people to repudiate the Garvey of themselves free from any alliances "which of loss than gain," showing that the cause is not the cause of the Bantu people.
The same line of reasoning was used in urging the sending of delegates to the Pan. In the Cape the natives are allowed to vote suffrage being fifty pounds sterling a ability to sign his name. Here also a priority 5 to 1, and seemingly it is their belief will gain their own way without having other new people in an movement. These new people may prove the corring. And while we, even in America, are for movements for our relief, our failure to of them is not actuated by the belief that analysis, seperate and distinct from that which it is the belief in such a principle which is actuated individuals, tribes and even daunt that their subjection physically and in reality.
The subjugation of Africa and its press in no small part to the failure of those size that they had common cause. The opponum in America is striking brought present political plight. Difference to such a line of thought has all that we may well discourage it when end.
Co-operation, without which no people have founded upon a realization of their common ability to do when their forces have the Bantu of the Cape May favor movement nor the Pan-African conference plan of them should be justified to themselves than that given in the option mentioned.
An opinion from a Johannesburg organ, the Umtetell was Bantu, reprinted in the New York Times shows a decided tendency of these people to repudiate the Garvey movement and to hold themselves free from any alliances "which hold more promise of loss than gain," showing that the cause of the American Negro is not the cause of the Bantu people. The same line of reasoning was used in its attempt at discouraging the sending of delegates to the Pan-African Congress.
limiting suffrage be fitting fifty pounds sterling per year wages and the ability to sign his name. Here also the natives are in the majority 5 to 1, and seemingly it is their belief that eventually, they will gain their own way without having become allied with any other Negro peoples in any movement whatever.
Future developments may prove the correctness of their reasoning. And while we, even in America, are studying the two major movements for our relief, our failure to ally ourselves with one of them is not actuated by the belief that our cause is in its best analysis, separate and distinct from that of all other dark races.
It is the belief in such a principle which has for so many years actuated individuals, tribes and even dark races with the result that their subjection physically and industrially has been easy.
The subjugation of Africa and its present exploitation due in no small part to the failure of those directly concerned to realize that they had common cause. The operation of that belief among us in America is striding brought out by a study of our present political plight.
Adherence to such a line of thought has proven so costly to us all that we may well discourage it whenever and wherever found.
Co-operation, without which no people have ever had success, is founded upon a realization of their common need, and their increased ability to do when their forces have been combined. The reason may have neither the Garvey movement nor the Pan-African conference plan but their repudiation of them should be justified to themselves by better reasoning than that given in the opinion mentioned.
THE LAW AND THE MOB
Sheriff Dan Harston of Dallas County has this readiness to place the processes of the laws of the mob.
On last Friday morning he calmly said to a prisoner held in his jail that there "On there wasn't."
Sheriff Harston in this instance only did was obligated by his oath of office. But to such others similarly placed, have disregard duty by pandering to the mob spirit, make special commendation.
And in commending his action it must not fearless stand for due process of law, on the law, has been made possible by the opinion generally.
Dallas County seems to have been brought to spirit only increases instead of decrease any group by rendering all persons equal in breaker whose life is snuffed out by the prisoner thus protected is an enemy as are made public, deserves to pay the bed by the society of which he is a member which he committed. He cannot escape his life as his law has never been known. The action of Sheriff Harston guaranteed people satisfaction of their demands with of their communities.
His action is to be commended as is the laws he upholds. Such spirit may we of our state.
The law should be supreme.

Resolutions will not do away with usenames. Conferences can only pave the way for a finite plans.
A black wing of the Republican party comes than those who would compose it are for. And maybe some day some of our 100 pet it they were badly adulterated.
The disarmament conference will be alrightable.
Sheriff Dan Harston of Dallas County has again demonstrated his readiness to place the processes of the law above the demands of the mob.
On last Friday morning he calmly said to a mob bent on lynching a prisoner held in his jail that there was "nothing doing." Sheriff Harston in this instance only did the duty to which he was obligated by his oath of office. But the frequency with which others similarly placed, have disregarded both their oath and duty by wandering to the mob spirit, makes his action worthy of special commendation.
And in commending his action it must not be forgotten that his fearless stand for due process of law, on this as in other occasions made possible by the opinion of the Dallas County public generally.
Dallas County seems to have been brought to realize that mob spirit only increases instead of decreasing the criminality of any group by rendering all persons equal in crime with the law breaker whose life is snuffed out by the mob in their midst. The prisoner thus protected is an enemy to society—and, if fact, has been wrongly treated by the society of which he is a member for the crime which he committed. He cannot escape his punishment for in cases such as his the law has never been known to fail.
The action of Sheriff Harston guaranteed to the State and its people satisfaction of their demands without disgrace to any of their communities. He must be commended as is the spirit of the people whose laws he upholds. Such spirit may well spread to other parts of our state.
Politicians one hundred years from now may not look back on our present day manipulators with as much favor as we now look upon those who founded this great nation.
Resolutions will not do away with unemployment or prejudice. Conferences can only pave the way for the working out of definite plans.
A black wing of the Republican party could not fare much worse than those who would compose it are faring now.
And maybe some day some of our 100 per centers will find that they were badly adulterated.
The disarmament conference will be alright if—Japan proves workable.
We learn to do by doing not saying.

Wherever these individuals of ordinary talents are found, in whatever activity they are doing their bit and making their contribution to the total human wealth, as are the distinguished cecach-makers of history who hero-warriors accomplish. Of them Plutarch in his classical biography of "Lives" does not write, nor the mentalist "Beacon Lights" gives us any suggestion when he writes: "Inamuch as the interest in the development of those great ideas and movements which we call civilization centers in no slight degree in the men who are identified with them, I have endeavored to give a faithful picture of their lives in connection with the eras and institutions which they represent, whether they were philosophers, occultics or men of action." For these great chroniclers of history and annalists of human achievement weave their writings, kinetes, potsens and makers of epochs. It remains for the writer of these writings, whom modern scholarship declares to be anonymous, to call the attention of the wartime warriors (of whom the world was not worthy), time failed him in his day, and whose descendants in our day are legion, whose names never get in the world's fame halls and who never are mentioned among the distinguished of earth. These nevertheless are among those whose life and labors are making for a better humanity and a better world. Concerning this man of ordinary talents, some discerning falminded observer writes:
"He is no dreamer. He has no wide vision. He stretches no line over empty space. He enters no new and far-flung plains. He follows beaten paths for orders or books for footprints.
He has no vision, he has no guns over its dizzy heights, when the engineer has said the task is barely possible. He responds with success, when the injuried Naucloon has said: "Go forward."
"He makes no discoveries in nature; develops no seedless oranges; creates no new hybrid in vegetables or fruit; but he follows the soil, plants the seeds, reaps the harvests and fills the granaries, and adorns the markets of the world.
"He sleeps in his tent while the councils of war are held at headquarters. After moken at midnight and fought a man, this man wakes with a manpack, gun, and haynet the next day.
"He sits in no church councils, no creeds, stretches no cords of plans over the seas and continents, at marching orders, he goes forth, over mountains, into the wilderness and the solitary places, across streams, through the jungles, into the presence of the lowly, and declares the message, proclaims the doctrine that wins the generations to life."
In the ministry, he fills no star palpits and may not be called upon to salvage from the wreckage waken by disastrous destructive criticism, those non-essential, verbal formulate and ecclesiastical ceremony held during the centuries of development of the formal church organization, but he does not, in the absence of any other, take them from the earth and spiritual truth revealed by Christ, but that these, despite the critics, will remain the standard of faith and practice—the essential basis of all human worth.
If the world would know how indispensable is this man of ordinary talents let it, if possible, conceive of his elimination from the ordinary pursuits and necessary human relations, and contemplate the effects on society. What a morbidity world would be; what utter, disastrous disagination of civilization! In its onward sweep, civilization develops its different functions for different grades of talent, and to the progressive evolution of our society division of labor is necessary. In this process every man, whether endowed with extrabrain or ordinary, finds his place, ruffles and gets his reward.
Thus the man of ordinary talent has his place and is not to be under-rated because he is not differently endowed. He is a positive force in the world of humanity and deserves humanity's gratitude for what he can draw, as well as do the distinguished and the "great."

All in all, the problem of race solve will not be an easy due.
The 1921 census showed two tendencies among Negroes. The first is that they are moving out of the rural into the urban district into the great industrial district. When the great industrial enterprises were short of labor during the world war they remembered that the Negro does not lend himself readily to organization and they pounced on him as a reservoir of supply. When they did they started something which will cost many a penny before it stops.
The census shows that the migration of Negroes to every northern state was heavy and that it was heaviest to the industrial centers. The second point shown by the census rate is that the Negro population increased in the ten year period, according to the statistical bulletin of the Metropolitan Life, the Negro population increased only 6.5 per cent or 1.5 per cent a year. Of that I per cent is due to excess of births over deaths.
The Negro in America has come to have a low birth rate as compared with Negroes elsewhere. For this venereal disease is a large and perhaps the largest factor. Voluntary birth control is not a factor of importance. According to the bullion quoted, using the death as a basis and fixing the birth rate to the prevailing age of that of the country Negro is 155. Since the Negro is moving into town, before long the chief factor in decreasing the Negro birth rate will be "moving into town."
There seems to be a fair chance that venereal disease will be brought under control, but it will take several years—more than a decade—to raise the birth rate by decreasing venereal disease.
Now those sterile by such diseases will remain for so life. When something is done the Negro population presently will come to a standstill, since there in no Negro immigration worth speaking of. What will the Negro do about it? The obvious way to is to reduce the death rate. More and great industrial centers has made things worse in more directions than one.
First, there is bound to be a great increase in rickets.
West Indian Negroes are said not to have rickets at all. Southern Negroes do not have much of it.
Recently a Chicago baby specialist said that every Negro child in that city had rickets. It generally is agreed that a very large proportion of Negro children in northern cities have rickets.
Moving to industrial centers increases the danger of consumption and the consumption rate of adult Negroes is twice and of adolescent Negroes twice. It is also more of whites of the same ages. There will be an increased birth death rate.
The Negroes in those industrial centers are less subject to malaria, typhoid fever, and small-pox as a rule. All in all, the problem of race improvement which the Negroes must solve will not be an easy one.

Confidence, respect, courage, self-esteem and self-worth are all that you are prompted to establish the Douglas National Bank in this great metropolis of the West is the first step you have made in whatever you have planned to attain economic freedom. This bank, put

on a sound financial basis will make certain whatever else your race may attempt to do in fields of big business enterprises. There is the bondage of the body and there is the bondage of the soul. We must be free of both before we can be truly emancipated. This can only be accomplished by showing confidence in your own ability and intelligence to solve the practical problems of life. Have you ever stopped long enough to realize that one day's profit of the white business men in the so-called business world is worthless? You have freedom that is yours as a matter of right and justice? Do you know that the National Bank is the stabilizer and mainstay of the nation's prosperity? Can you not see, then, that a National Bank that you can call your own will bring you those situations of respect that will make you welcome in all of the greater movements for the general public good in this great city of ours. Confidence in yourself and the full respect of the other elements of our big cosmopolitan population, I say again, will bring you the economic freedom which all men throughout the world, are eagerly seeking. You will be able to do well, too, willing an ear to praise. It takes courage to do this. What I mean is that you have got to summon all the courage you possess to keep from falling into the pitfalls of the bottom of which lies failure, the savage play of prejudice, economic slavery and final social elimination. You have 25,000,000 on deposits in the banks of Chicago over which you have no control. Allude from the fact that you have saved that huge amount of money, it brings you no power to use to the economic profit of your people. You have no power to use to the economic profit of your people, the wholesome respect of your neighbors and then the courage to fight valiantly for the places of economic freedom are the common sense weapons by which men get to the top in the great and worthwhile struggle for full economic freedom. Keep this bank going. Stand solidly behind the band of brave men who are working to give you an institution that will be a front rank agency to bring you quickly to the proud position of a true 100 per cent Americanism. Your place in the larger America is the greater measure that you are aware by your loyalty to business enterprises.
EYES AND THEIR CARE.
By Dr. F. S. Rodgers, Ont.
Everybody knows in a general way that much injury can be done to the eyeight by carelessness in reading. But few people know the exact reason for this need to read in a hygiestic way. For this reason special value attaches to a simple, terse statement of the principal rules in the hygienic sense. 1. Take care of your sight; upon it depends much of your safety and success in life. 2. Always hold your head up when you walk. 3. Hold your book fourteen inches from your face. 4. Never read in the twilight, in a raining position.
5. Never read with the sun shining directly on the book.
6. Never face the light in reading.
7. Never look from behind you and over the left shoulder.
8. Avoid books printed indiscretly or in small type.
9. Rest your eyes frequently by looking from the book.
10. Clean the eyes night and morning with pure water.
11. Never rub your eyes with your hands or with an unclean towel.

January 7, 1922 will complete the first century of the experiment of a Negro state in Africa. The first century of the experiment of Africa by the American Colonization Society, acting under the protection and auspices of the United States, lands since 1922 into what is known as "the Republic of Liberia." The experiment has proved a brilliant or even 2 plain economic or race success in the effort to civilize and educate the mind runs about in circles and cycles, and, as the first hundred years are about to close, the Liberians themself grow up into a business enterprise, taking steps in the human, and the whites who have grown up into a business enterprise, are drawing to a close of this first century "promised, at one time to be signalized by a great Negro movement toward the establishment of a black empire of a "United

The power of the eye is the power of its accommodation of the eye. Its contraction enables the chrystalline line to increase its convexity and to the same extent as the power. This power is greater in childhood. Perhaps you can remember when you could see at face. But this power has steadily diminished as age advanced. The elasticity and consequent convexity of the eye kept growing less. Hence the increased tendency to throw the head further and farther away each year. Science knows but one remedy—eyes refractive answer. This relieves the strain and at the same time enables you to bring your reading or other work back to its proper distance. It is a mistaken notion that the covering of glasses will develop the power of the eye more dependent on them. They will check that tendency, thereby allowing it to continue to use the eyes without the help of glasses after Nature calls for them. It will simply dis
We have before us an admirable book on Liberia—that is, it is admirable. It is entitled "The Republic of Liberia," and is written by R. C. F. It is now the country of the increasingly of every phase of Liberian life and of the conditions throughout the country. He reveals it as not only the territory and terrestrial storms, and as entirely capable of being made a prosperous Negro state. His conclusion is that the numbers of natives at present leading title and often mischievous lives in the far interior—where they come from—will be increased and bumbling forces of the savage forest tribes will result in increased prosperity and happiness among the

LIBERIA—AND A NEGRO STATE
This country was appealed to in 1907 by the Liberians, and an American government was able to accomplish some amelioration of the conditions. But, Mr. Brawley concludes, in a more pessimistic view, "Today the Republic has hardly made a beginning in industrial development. As to the present-day Liberia, he writes:
In a territory not longer than our own state of Pennsylvania a population of about 16,000 holds not more than 16,000 holds under its central government a native population of about 16,000 numbers nearly 2,000,000 souls.
