REST.
The auditorium of St. James A. M. Temple was surrounded by the friends and relatives of Mr. Thomas Wilkinson, the pastor of St. James and their last respect. Mr. Wilkinson held under the auspices of Pride of West Lodge K. P. No. 15 of N. I. which was a chapel pastor of St. James and Rev. J. L. L. The service was simple but impressively representative of the various organizations with which he was allied, the Texas A. M. University, Texas, had lived in Dallas for 20 years and church circles. He had been a member of the 1892 sturring which time he served as a full-time class teacher. The full Python class was carried out during the service. Resolutions of the Western Beauty Court and all deserved honors. He leaves a brother, wife and a host of more distant relatives.

AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE RIGHT MEN.
The Wortham shows, at out Palm Park, is looking for two men who know how to work firewires' displays. Mr. Blairford has asked the Dallas Express to print this story to see if they know how to not know their names, but they are told to be experts in handling firewires. There will be a big fire works display at Palm Park, at the night of the fireworks' celebration, and special armaments have been made to care for the fireworks, and closewires, to see the display. If any one knows the men, who know how to handle firewires at Palm Park before can do them a favor by letting them know so they can get in to coexist with them.

EMANCIPATION AND PROGRESS.
EMANCIPATION AND PROGRESS.
Monday was Emancipation Day and its observance by us in Dallas was so free from disorder and disturbance as to call to mind very vividly the fact that in the letter we have told them that we have made real progress along the lines of behavior and proper demeanor.
Time was when the 19th of June was a season of rootous celebration. So slowly had we progressed in the art of enjoying and at the same time distancing and causalities and casualities in numbers large enough to cause comment and unavoidable publicity rule rather than the exception.
While the changed state may be due in part to prohibition there can be no doubt that we have been justly attributed to a growing tribute of our masses to act in the same manner as our elites, being mindful of the fact that decency is always to be sought for. This fact is gratifying.
This progress apparently localized in is to be found in the patronage by our people of the frivolous concern owned and operated by us.
Riveride Park, the newest and most complete of these places was 2500 people witnessed the ball game and more than 2000 persons spent the day in the Ann Arbor Park area. This is a healthy sign. It is evidence of the fact that we are surely becoming awakened to the act of giving back to our community that will pay back in the long run. It is an evidence of progress in the work of our community of such pronounced actions, timely followed and it will be found that the opportunities for division among our people and our freedom in their lives are greatest abundance may be owned, operated and controlled by our own people and our freedom in their lives by our own desires. Such a condition may well be looked forward to. Each of us may well help in bringing it to pass. For it is true that we practice in seeking diversity and our own well being and self-reliance and will learn the含义 of in-服从 which we too offer suffer from.
Let us continue to evidence this
program as time goes on resulting
that this expedition was only unanticipated and find real freedom

WILL THERE FINALLY BE A NATIONAL NEGRO PARTY?
"The Republicans mistreat us and the Democrats don't want us. What are we go to do about it?" This question is being heard with increasing frequency as the customers of political maneuvers as concern the Negro become more and more apparent. What are we going to do about it. There are few Negroes in America who do not realize that the recent tactics of the G. O. P. show its decided leaning toward "lily whiteism." And there are no Negroes, especially in the South who do not realize that the is no welcome for them among the Negroes. During the past two years independent tickets were put out by Negroes or "black and Ian" factions in Virginia, Arkansas, Florida, Ohio and Texas. Since then events have shaken the faith of voters in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and they are seeking relief in some form from their lilies. In New Jersey they contemplate putting an all-Negro ticket in the field. Why not everywhere? When there is no hope in the majority of cases of actually attacking any of such candidates there is certain of action of certain candidates which is to be found in no other. It ought to commend itself highly to that more advanced body of political thinkers who have become well weary of the endless series of insults and rebuffs which have from time immemorial been characteristics of the G. O. P. a party to which Negroes have allied themselves more or less blindly. Of course in such a course there would be no "pork barrel" from which grasping individuals could feed and grow fat. But the Negroes have allied themselves more or less blindly, as it has been done has been at the expense of the self respect of that great mass of us whom these men have led?
A national Negro Party? It is not impossible neither is it altogether impractable. Eventually this course will be found among the candidates.
THE STUDY OF NEGRO LIFE AND HISTORY.
The Carnegie Corporation has given $25,000 and the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial $25,000 to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, director of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. This fund will be used to further research in the field of Negro history and to publish the results.
The association will continue to issue the Journal of Negro History, a quarterly scientific magazine published since 1916. It will also conduct research concerning the free Negro prior to 1861 investigate Negro reconstruction history and train for this sort of work. Few students, who will be given fellowships in accredited graduate schools.
There has probably been no gift in recent years which has had such possibilities of being productive of as gratifying results as these. The study of Negro life and history are essential to the full development of real students of American life and institutions.
It is true to no small extent that much of the lack of appreciation of the rapid rise of the race by its own members as well as by others has been due to the lack of authentic records of the progress of the race.
The history of past generations as recorded in history have always played an important part in firing the ambition and strengthening the resolve of later generations. By them values are determined and progress measured.
So far, the Negro has had no such records. It is only recently that their necessity has been realized by him and their lack noted. This gift is particularly opportune in that it gives to those most interested in such work and especially fitted for such work, the means with which to pursue it efficiently. The full potential of such work is being blessed by us but future years will bear witness to its genuine worth. There is only one thing equal in worth to the making of history; that is, the recording of history.

A "silent parade" was staged by the Negro population of Washington as a protest against continued lynchings and in an effort to promote early action by Congress on the Dyer anti-lynching bill now before the Senate Judicary Committee.
The absence of bands lent additional impressiveness to the demonstration. Several thousands were in the long line which was topped by scores of posters and streamers setting forth details of recent lynchings which were said to have set a new record in Maui.
Men and women representatives of every profession in which the Negro has achieved success were included among the marchers, as were delegations from various fraternal and civic organizations. A group of boys bore a sign which read.
"We are Fifteen Years Old: One of Our Age Was Roasted Alive."
Another sign declared:
"Congress Discusses Constitutionality While the Smoke of Burning Bodies Darkens the Heavens."
The route of the parade was around the Capitol grounds, through Pennsylvania Avenue pass: the White House. The marchers disbanded at the end of the march as silently as they had traversed the streets.
A truly eloquent protest: but to what extent America sees and appreciates it none can say. Once justified by the absence of constituted authority, lynching now has become a mania and a mance to American institutions—but none seem conscious of it but those who suffer most from its barbarities.
If there is yet so American heart and conscience such a protest as this should reach it. And not only in Washington and New York but the potency of this means be tried, but even in Texas and Georgia, where it is truly possible to stage a spectacle of protest where it will not be observed by a real or potential lyncher. No way must be left unattended of smiling the aid of right thinking Americans in stamping out this blot upon our civilization which is slowly sapping the decency from a wonderful government.

We believe that this is the limit in discrimination. So far as we know it is the first situation of its kind in America. It challenges more than passing attention from us who are accustomed to insult and well versed in the ways in which prejudice is real itself. We cannot say but certainly if such signs can be followed, we soon will be forced by the pressure of prejudice to make jobs for ourselves—a thing which without such pressure we should already be seeking to do with much greater efficiency.
Those who would blame the church for the short-comings of the race along other lines are wrong. Only the members of the race as such are blameable. When they catch the needed vision in spite of everything they will make the needed progress.
Men who really want things may have them but they cannot govern the price they pay. Only when men do not count the cost they really achieve, what they desire.

WHAT IS THE UNITED STATES SENATE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
There seems to be no question about it, the Sefate's nerves are be-
come frightened. It's only a few days since Senator Watson, of Geor-
gia, earnestly entreated Senator Phipps to step outside and be knocked
down. Senator Phipps didn't step out for some reason, maybe because he
don't want to be knocked down. Anyway, Senator Watson, of Georgia, has
obviously been nursing a deep disappointment ever since.
Not unnaturally; for when a senator feels the urge upon him to
to knock somebody down and nobody volunteers to receive that attention,
or even accepts when personally invited to receive it, it is bound to leave
him dismissed and frightful. Senator Watson, of Georgia, has been that for
several days, but has now seen new hope in life. He has discovered that
Senator Leenroot is insecure, and insecurity is one of the things Senator
Watson, of Georgia, is looking for. Moreover, he informs the Senate, it is
the first time Senator Leenroot has been in歇息. It is, by actual count,
the third time. Three times. Will the Senate therefore take a recess while Senator Watson of Georgia, knocks Senator Leenroot down? It will only take a minute.
It looks as though the Senate would either have to change its rules to provide for a proper exhibition of these performances of the senator from Georgia or that he will have to continue to put up with disappointments. Obviously the Senate cannot get on with the tariff bill unless somebody consents to be knocked down by Mr. Watson and so get the senator to be indicted. As it is neither the Senate nor Mr. Watson are getting anywhere. If the Senate would make a rule setting aside an hour in every legislative day for Mr. Watson to do his knocking down, some progress might be made. The only alternative would be to do something about Mr. Watson. We wonder something hasn't been done, but we suppose what's everybody's nobody business. The Senate is strong for tradition, and there seems to be no opposition to the composition of Mr. Watson for the disposition of less documents. —Kansas City Star
The strike of Negro brick-yard workers at Haverstraw, New York is a very significant event. One thousand of them have quit work and the State Constabulary has been called in, as is usual where there is such a force. These men were brought from the South and promised high pay and comfortable living quarters. They did not get the high pay nor did they get the comfortable living quarters. They were compelled to work for $3.75 a day although the price of brick has advanced $8.00 a thousand over last year's price. The men are asking for a restoration of last year's wage scale $4.75 a day. If it is not of this sort—on the part of Negro workers—should become more general, it is hard to predict what the results would be. It might mean that they would not be so ready to go in as strike breakers. Then it might be necessary for employers to adopt new methods and labor would take a different attitude: ward Negro labor. Perhaps in time Negro workers will resolve to cast their肋 with the workers of all races and use the same tactics in dealing with the capitalists that other workers use. It is a different question at best but the white workers hold the key to the solution.
Prejudice keeps the Colored workers out of the American Federation of Labor, but he is welcomed into the radical labor movements. It is to the advantage of the employing class that this prejudice continue. As long as Negroes are excluded from the unions thousands of them are free to be used as strike breakers. There is a mutual hatred which the capitalist uses against Negroes. Negroes on account of color and the Negro in turn hates the unions because they keep him out. Therefore he turns to the employer and helps him break on the strike.
Negroes have no partiality for the captain of industry as such. He knows that he only gets a chance when there is trouble with the white worker. He knows too that he is paid less wages than the white worker. Right after the war during the period of "red" hysteria there was a feeble movement toward the recognition of the Negro in industry. This was not because he accorded the rights of a human being but because it was thought that he would be money and did not have to be promoted. It was assumed that he was less apt to emphasize his grievances and most of all if he happened to be "red" it would be of less brilliant hue than that of other races. Now Should Negroes in any considerable number become conscious of the fact that most of them are wage earners, that they are exploited to a greater extent than is any other group, that a large part of their insecurity has been caused by them, that they will be new alignments on their part and a multiplying of the market at Haversraw.

WHO SOLD LIBERIA?
By William Pickens (A. N. P.)
This is an easier pattern of the system for dealing with Negroes in Mississippi; one white man is appointed to look after the whole lot of them and they have no appeal save through this one white man, and generally this one white man soon finds himself a convenient Negro who he can "trust," and then he does "nothing else" any Negro case or cause unless it is he right through this narrow channel, even though the white man may be a narrow biot and the Negro simile head. The white man may be a soldier and the Negro words and knew that he was selling Liberia, body and soul, which he signed that treaty. And Mr. Harding and Mr. Hughes, both members of the Baptist Church, knew that they were driving a hard bargain against the poor. It would have been much better for Liberia to have decided to do without these "public works" until they could have the money and pay cash for them. If they can pay back five million dollars and the interest at and the same time pay two or three hundred thousand dollars a year to a whole host of white American officers and at the same time have all their money "handed"1 or the very follows to whom they owe the debt. If they can ever in God, world do this, they could ten times as easily have saved up five million dollars and paid cash for "improvements." As it is now, it is not possible to save the money, and it is not possible to handle all the money, do all the "fingering" and will some day let Sambo know how nearly he is out of debt.
the earth is God knows how many million years old, and even the human race is perhaps a million years old, and yet some people are looking for the millennial age of perfection in their little life-time of fifty years or so. We are not sure if that is the next meaning to find out that the whole world has not been revenge.
