The most significant statement contained in News releases by the Associated Press of the National Negro Business League which held its annual meeting in Norfolk recently read as follows: "The rehearsals of business experiences were put with the minor happenings this year and discussions making for the improvement of business situations throughout the country were recently before the convention."

This statement coupled with the fact that $5,000 was raised for the development of the League during the next year gives promise of its beginning to function definitely as an instrument for the promotion and stabilization of Negro business rather than a cleaning house of personal experiences, real or fancied.

The world at large appreciates the development of Negro business and the rehearsal of the history of individually successful men listens and reads well. But it is a fact that the world may gain knowledge of these experiences without a national meeting in which they are recounted.

ha, never hoisted the white feather, neither has it been digressed by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the floral mouth. It is a plain, euryday, sentile, conservative newspaper, which trivially we will to catch up with. It doubles flax; it praises a patriotism an broad as our country. Its love of even hated justice covers all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are present in it, up and up with us. This ground is holy.
Certainly some method of procedure such as this should be adopted and consistently followed for thus only can a real national business league be built. It must be a representative body whose sole aim is the expansion and development of business.
More than passing attention also should be paid to that portion of the remarks of the same speaker which urged the encouragement of young men to study business methods and the employment of such men as soon as they are available for service.
Many of our business enterprises fail primarily because of a lack of knowledge of real business methods. Older men cannot or will not make special study of them but certainly they should seek to found the business which they foster upon these principles which experience has proven essential to success.
We glory in the success of this meeting of the League.
We glory in the success of this meeting of the League.
We commend the injection of the more practical thing into its production. We hope that this may mark the beginning of its career as a really potent force in bringing about our financial development.
W. E. KING.
Our Clubs.
Religion and The Present Day.
Dallas people seem blessed with the spirit of organization at least as far as social and charitable clubs are concerned. Each community has and clan has one with the result that their numbers are new large.
More frequently than in former years we hear the complaint that the church is failing to fill the prominent place in the lives of individuals which it formerly filled. Especially is this noticeable among us in the falling off in church attendance and the general apathy with which appeals for its support and increase are received.
Varied reasons are given for this lack of interest. Some argue that religion has been so commercialized that appeals for funds take precedence over appeals for souls; others argue that the church life is not made to conform nearly enough to the every day life and its doctrines do not help its members to live in this advanced and progressive are.
Certainly such questions are pertinent and vital.
They demand of alert, federal
well organized social and charitable clubs which will really operate for the development of the comunity and the member who coa
That the same condition is wide spread and affects American church life generally is expressed in all religious journals and learns everywhere are studying to corroit it. The reasons which they believe responsible for it vary but nearly all are agreed that the lessening of public response to the area of the church is to be found in the methods of the church (fellow).
Our social life is probably over-developed. We are prone rather to over enjoy ourselves and to spend too lazily in the pursuit of pleas.
Most recent of the utterances along this line is that, of Dr. Charles Ellwood who writes in the Southwestern Christian Christian Press.
But such is by no means true
our charitable nature and functions
are not reduced to a charity to a system de-
condition which makes give in
conditions which make give in
"The crisis in the religious world has been brought about by the failure of existing religion to adapt itself to the two outstanding facts in our civilization—science and democracy. The church must learn to adapt itself to these two mighty forces which are building our civilization. Of these two, science is the more outstanding and dominant. It is the foundation of our views of life and of the universe as well as of our material progress, and so it has largely created the conditions which favored the rise of modern democracy. Yet the maladjustment of religion with science remains pronounced. Often are we assured by some one in the house of science that science can find nothing in religion except the truth. We have no scientific grounds on the other hand, the representatives of religion not in frequently proclaim it outside of the field of science and present its scientific evaluation as a species of "sacrificie." Both attitudes have made difficult the attainment of rational religion; that is, a religion is accord with the established facts of human experience.
It is possible for the various charitable clubs of the city, without an amount more efficient and much more efficient and then they now. They should bed their energies to bind and nox that winter is approaching and the demands upon them become more imitable. The sort of study to become more charitable may well begin to characterize the clubs of the city. They were far short of their maximum efficiency. What is what and dancing they give pleasure and profitable recreation to the immediate members cannot be complained of. Yet the need for these things of these things should be made secondary to the policy of constructive effort in behalf of the com-
But if religion is a vital element in civilization, then the attainment of a rational, ethical religion is one of the greatest and most fundamental of our social needs, and nothing could be more short-sighted and simple than an irrational attitude toward religion, whether on the part of its defenders or of its critics. In the past, religion has been a time that science thinkers and the representatives of religion join hands in seeking to promote the development of rational religion as the world's supreme need.
Our unfortunate girls now have no friends an angr. the women of our school need to shift for themselves, to stumble farther and far down the school ladder to deliver crucial needles needed for active reactive influences. Women's clubs really conserved to the cause of the needles could afford help for them.
For we shall not be able to reconstruct our civilization without the reconstruction of religion; and the first thing to be aimed at in the reconstruction of religion is to make it rational, Science, as a religion, and to make it rational, Civilization. A religion which is "adapted to the requirements of modern life" must first of all be adjusted to modern science. A religion which is not in harmony with modern science cannot possibly remain the religion of the thi-king class of the future. The religion of the thi-king class generally, must lie in following reason, not in dwarfing it."
Day nurseries, country camps for

in rural areas, and the

the many cluses which are operating in
them.
Certainly religion like science has been a determining factor in civilization and it must continue to be.
Those who direct their destinies may well study to make it efficient in its service of the people of this day and time.
The difficulties which it now meets are not greater than those of former times.
Can they catch this tide of service?
Can they ever think a terms of real service?
Can they evolve a scheme of service for themselves and then follow it?
We promise. Time will tell us.
We could also improve our own the citations of service.
People are no less lacking in soul now than in former times. They can be reached. They can be interested. They can be so converted that the church, the medium through which the urge to this service comes will become prominent in their affections. But this condition can maintain only as church leaders study to serve efficiently the needs of this day.

THE MIRROR
OF
PUBLIC OPINION
Something unique in banking history has come to pass in Philadelphia. Three bankers of distinction—E. Pusey Passmore, president of the Bank of North America, the oldest bank in the United States; Ama S. Wing, president of the Provident Trust Company, and E. G. Parly, of Parly Brothers & Co., investment bankers—are acting as an advisory board for a small Negro bank.
Readers of this column may recall an article printed a few months ago telling how a newspaperman had gone to the president of a large national bank and asked him, as a work of good citizenship, to serve on such a board and how the man in question had accepted. The reference was to Mr. Passmore.
That article attracted wide attention, particularly in the South. In the publications of various of the Federal Reserve Bank it was discussed at length and praised as an excellent idea. Now that the advisory board of white bankers is functioning, wider interest is likely to be aroused, and it would not be surprising if other cities followed the Philadelphia example.
The little Negro bank referred to in the Citizens and Southern. It was established in September, 1820, by Robert R. Wright Sr., and his son, Robert R. Wright Jr. The older Wright was the first Negro college graduate in Georgia, founder of the first high school for Negro pupils, president of the first State college for the people of his race and organizer of the first bank for Colored people in Georgia.
All things considered, the Citizens and Southern Bank has done pretty well. It has more than 4000 depositors, with aggregate deposits of $118,000. It has a substantial balance in the Bank of North America, and it made an excellent investment in Liberty Bonds, buying $52,000 of them at prices of $4 to $9.
It has done good to promote thrift and better understanding among the Colored people.
The Negro has had a hard row to hoe. He never has had a square deal. Before emancipation he was wholly dependent in his owner. Freedom has problems for him that few among the whites appreciate. It is difficult to overcome in a generation or two race habits and customs of centuries. The Negro is here to stay. He can be elevated in citizenship if guided well and intelligently. He has the reputation of being thrifless. The deposits of the Citizens and Southern Bank and other Negro banks would seem to show that this reputation is not wholly deserved. One of the things Mr. Wright and his son have been endeavoring to do is get better housing for the Negro. Environment has decided effect on character.
The Negro is highly sentimental. Those who ought to know believe that interest in their well-being, such as is displayed by the white bankers on the advisory board of the Citizens and Southern Bank, will greatly stimulate saving among the Colored people.
Banking is comparatively new to the Negro. It is to save such men as the Messrs. Wright from error that Mr. Passmore, Mr. Wing and Mr. Paraly are giving their service. If they get the foundation well laid they will do an excellent work. They fully appreciate the task they have undertaken and expect to have a draft on their time and patience.
Philadelphia has approximately 155,000 Negroes in its population. The number will make the Colored citizen more and more of an asset. Through sound banking much can be done to that end.
The Philadelphia plan of dealing with the Negro, as illustrated by the service for which Mr. Passmore, Mr. Wing and Mr. Paraly have volunteered, deserves the earnest consideration of the Nation.

These facts are cited by a student of the race problem of the South, who holds that the best and, in fact, the only solution of that problem lies in the Negroes ownership of property. There are really, he declares, two Negroes instead of one. First, there are the Negroes thirsty sentenced among white majurities, where they feel the steady upward pull of the surrounding superiority of the Negroes in the South, where the superior Negro feels the steady downward pull of the inferior mass by which he is surrounded.
The Negro, this student declares, can attain a higher place in the world only through a struggle for property, and especially far land. The pull of the black race lies in the ownership of homes, farms and bank balances. It is the lawless, homeless Negro who disgraces his race and endangers the civilization of the South.

And, just to see how many reels of skin arouse from our old-fashioned auctions, we act 'e' everybody have a facial massage too! Yom! listen at them! It's the old, old fallacious statement. A number of people cherish the erroneous idea that mansaging is of comparatively recent origin, but who recently developed it in the age of the world indicate. We have derived "massage" from the French "massuer" which in turn came from the Greek meaning "to kneel." Not only in Greece and Rome, but in the cultured Egypt, Persia, Syria, India, and China the have often surprised the man who supposed that the man needs to shape our lips into that painful soinvalids we hear about in those keeping it in good condition with steadily improving capacity for production.
The aim of most of the educational institutions for the Negroes of the South is to make of the students good farmers and good farmers' wives. They are taught that it is far better for them to become owners of land, even though it be in a small way, than to work for others, and each year sees a considerable increase in such ownership. As we grow older and troubles fall thick and fast, we have less occasion to massage, to kneel, to laugh heartily and heart free with the abandon of youth. And as we have less, and less of smiles, of the face, to shuffle back and smile, to throw back and smile, to shape our lips into that painful soinvalids we hear about in those keeping it in good condition with steadily improving capacity for production.

countries in the sacred annals, supposedly effected by the "gentle laying on of hands," was simply the result of a vigorous body massage by the strong armed religious devotees, which gave new life to the atrophied muscles. Certainly it has been with a child and enjoy this science (for it has been developed into such) for when Baby Brothee falls down, the real alleviator and comfort give vigorous relief and smoothing out the painful wrist and smoothing out the towel following the bath is two thirds of the pleasure connected with it's a grand and glorious feeling.

Glycerin dries the skin rapidly and the result will be a harsh dry surface, a bit darker and yellow, and a thick, sticky layer in the middle of mixing vasseline with these greasy preparations on the market, can have but one result, general use. The vasseline can be applied often enough and rubbed in thoroughly often enough. Oh man, the mess! After the massage, a cloth wet in leed water will close the porce, and chill the face nicely bringing the skin back to its normal state. Foam even rub gently with bits of ice. And we feel so invigorated and so fresh and our skin looks so good, freed from the impurities it vainly tried to throw off, and the muscles are so "mappy" and full of energy. We can head and laugh wholeheartedly and abandonly just to know that you are on the road to Beauty, and to be a "NILE QUEEN BEAUTY."

America's proud boast of freedom and democracy and its seeming solitary weakness, and oppressed peoples of the Old World and for mankind generally, is the determination and decision and its preachments for justice looked upon as hypocritical preachments. American mobs with no governmental effort to curb or restrain them or to suppress them.
A revealing feature of the sessions was the association of the League, the National Association of the League, the National Negro Farmers' Association, the National Negro Farmers' Association, the National Negro Bank Association, the National Association and the exhibition, window dressing which was one of the convention's highlights, which what has been called "the astounding exhibition."

ATTEMPT MADE TO KEEP NE
GROES OFF "BATTERY."
Charleston, S. C. Ang. 31—Charleston, the "Historic City by the Sea," which for years could be numbered among the few southern cities where are colored and white people lived in the warm and sunny, brotherly love, but now a few heavy inflow of whites from other sections of the state is rapidly enriched by tourists. The most recent outward sign is the action which was started on Sunday, August 17th to prohibit Negroes from entering the city, fresh from the sea, while strolling on the historic bank. The "Battery" has been famous since the days of the Civil War, fresh from the historic site with its guns yet remaining, was used to shell the no less famous Fort Sumter. The battery under the stern of the fort was the stoners of the city and maintained by police funds has for years been a haven for large crowds of visitors. The fort, which has been erected sun, have found refuge and comfort by sitting or strolling around the fort, once a order man could be enforced by a man could not be traced on Sunday, but efforts are being made to source and have the same rescinded.
The "Battery is one of the public places of the city and no visitor can sideline he has seen Charleston, without visiting this historic site. Charleston boasts of several parks but the battery is the only place Neo. are seen, we have been permitted to visit without molestation and the secrec-ration order can expect much opposition from the Negro population of the city.

MINISTERS CONVERT VERBAL DEBATE INTO FISTIC COMBAT.
(Preston News Service)
Little Rock, Ark, Aug. 31.—Very often pleasant discussions turn out for the mutual benefit of the participants and the audience, and occasionally they have have the reversed effect. At a meeting of the Young ministers' Alliance here last week, the participants coelectaealistic ethics, beginning as a mere abstruse question, and finding its climax in an intensely personal exchange of opinions as well as physicical questions, over the ethics and propriety of the recent action of the organization in expelling one of its members, Mr. Mack, from the Mallery and J. L. Mack got the worst of the argument. Both sustained several cuts about their faces and arms, and the audience was Bush Memorial hospital where 23 stitches were taken to close the wounds.
Rev. Mr. Abe Guidon, who is alleged to have inflicted the wounds of the police, said he have fled to parts unknown. The police are searching for him.
