LEADING LIGHTS OF THE RACE AS THEY APPEARED AT THE SANHEDRIN MEETING LAST WEEK IN CHICAGO
Chicago, Ill., Feb. 23—Over 500 delegates representing practically every Negro organization in America were in attendance here last week at the great All Race Conference or Sanhedrin which was assembled on a call from Dean William Kelly Miller, originator of the Idea of co-ordinating all the efforts of the various agencies working for the uplift of the race.
Among the organizations represented were: The National Baptist Convention, The A. M.E. Church, Y. M. C. A.; M. E. Church; G. U. O. of Odd Fellows; American Woodmen; I. B. P. O. E. of the World; Sisters of the Mysterious Ten; African Blood Brotherhood; K of P. N. A. S. A. E. A. A. and A.; K of P. eastern and western Hemispheres; A. E. O. Mystic Shrine; National Negro Funeral Directors; National Medical Ass'n; U. B. F.; G. U. A. Sons and Daughters of Peace; National Negro Business League; National Urban League; C. A. V. C. C. Association of College Presidents and National Association for Advancement of Colored People.
Officers elected during the first day of the meeting as follows: President, Dean William Kelly Miller, Washington, D. C.; Vice President, F. B. Ransom, Indianapolis, Ind.; Secretary, J. C. Neill, Washington, D. C.; Treasurer, John R. Hawkins, Washington, D. C.
The Sanhedrin was not concerned with any specific matter but its aim was to get a common basis of action so that all agencies would be strengthened in their particular field.
The movement was the first of its kind ever undertaken by the Negro race in this country. All committees chosen were to be permanent.
Following a reception at the Vincennes Hotel Monday evening and the address of welcome by Mayor Dever on Tuesday, the convention got down to real business, many leading topics of the day were discussed by the leading speakers and orators of the race. Following the close of the session it was decided that the event should be an annual affair.

The Odd Fellows are going to build this Temple. They are going to build it in Houston. They are going to build it soon. listened througt grens to the speech of a Negro law-
Iyer, §. D, Redmond who told the truth about why its per-
ntage of Negro migrants was so high.
‘Mr, Redmondls address covered the entire gamut of in-
ter-raclal relations in the state, the evil of lynching in which
[Mississippt is among the foremost, the problem of education,
lin whieh she is most backward ; the display of firearms, an
iéentive to crime among black and white citizenry; the care
of criminals, the sick, the insane, and suffrage.
‘He had in mind bringing to the heart of his hearers the
tact of the Neqrro's interest in the welfare of the state. With-
out censoring Negroes who had become migrants to better
their condition, Mr. Redmond pointed out to the legislators
f the state the harm which such emigration wrought on the
onstructive forces of the state, black and white, and assert-
led that the greatest asset of any state is its man power.

LONGER LIFE FOR NEGROES
Dr. Louis I. Dublin, statistician of the Metropolitan Life
Insurance Company says that the life span of the American
Negro has been lengthened by five years during the last de-
leade, This is due to two great factors. First of these is
ithe increasing interest on the purt of the organized public
calth movement in the well-being of the Negro and more
especially the nursing health service. The second is the
jawakening of the Negro race to its opportunities for better
‘of life and labor.
While the death rate among the Negro population is
still in excess of that among white persons, the gap is grad-
ally being lessened. Control is being gained over tubercu-
losis, typhold fever, malaria and other diseases which caus-
ed high death rates among Negroes ten years ago. ‘This is
being brought about by the Negroes themselves, through
thet pres and other cle for etching prevention teas
ures, as well as throtigh other public health agencies. ‘The
condition of the Negro in towns and cities of the North as
wall as the South is much improved in recent years, and Dr.
Dublin's studies indicate that the improvement wil! probably
continue,
Conerete figures regarding the health and life span are
found in the record of Negroes insured by the record of Ne-
groes insured by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
Most of these are dwellers in communities. In 1911 and
1912, it is shown, the Colored boy or girl ten years old could
expect to live an average of 41 years and two months more.
Tn 1922 the Negro lad who became ten years of age
could expect to live 46 years and nine months longer, an’ in-

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
Frank P. Litschert
GENERAL GRANT ELECTED PRESIDENT.
CHAPTER EIGHT
Months before the assembling of the Republican National Conference of 1962 it was generally admitted that Mr. Kennedy's Grant would be the Republican nominee for President. He was entitled to the nomination, and it seemed to be the almost unanimous opinion that he was entitled to the nomination. The Republican Party of Chicago and was called together by the national chairman, Marvin Schubert, of Missouri, was made temporary chairman, and Joseph R. Hawley was made permanent chairman.
The platform adopted congratulated the country on the success of the program, and pledged the payment of the public debt, reduction in taxation as soon as "osable and feasible," and the reduction of the government. The resolutions deplored the assassination of President Obama and the annulment of Johnson to the presidency, charging that he "perverted public national security and the abundance of male corruption and has been justly impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors." The resolution naturalized citizens were entitled to immigration and declared that naturalized citizens were nativeborn. Tribute as paid to the soldiers of the late war and men who had seen it firsthand now honestly co-operating to restore peace were commended and the citizens as civilized pledges to them.
Ulysses S. Grant was put to nomination for President by the Democratic nominee, an annuously proclaimed the party candidate. Schuyler Cofax, of Indiana, was nominated for vice president.
General Grant in his letter of acceptance said in conclusion, "We have succeeded in its sequence—with economy of administration, will lighten the burden of taxation, while it continues our national debt. Let us have space."
The new house which convened on March 4, 1868, contained 125 members, 100 of whom were James G. Blaine, of Maine, was elected speaker. The Senate was Republican, 55 to 10. One of the senators adopted a resolution reclaiming sympathy with the people of Cuba. Fourty years later another Republican administration was destined to lead the way to this constitution. Most of the time of the forty-first congress was devoted to legislative construction. One bill passed secured the freedom of suffrage to the male colored people of the United States, ratified the Fifteenth amendment to the Constitution and was designed to enforce that amendment. July 28, 1870, the following resolution was introduced and passed by the 109 to 47, a strict party vote: "Resolved that the interest of the country require such tariffs to afford incidental protection to domestic manufactures and as such, impose the lowest burden up and best promote and encourage the great industrial interest
The Civil Service Law,
and met again in December, 1870,
devoting most of its time to the
endament of a bill designed to
enforce the tenth amendments to the
Constitution. On March 3, 1871, a bill
was passed authorizing the Presid-
ent to regulate the fora and regula-
tions for the admission or
personnel into the civil service of
the United States, and Grant then appointed a Civil Service Commission.
In the election of 1870 the Republic
maintained a majority of 35 votes and M. Blaine was re-
presented in the Senate. Time since the war all the States
of the Union were represented
the Home and Senat and most
of the body were devoted to reconstru-
tion. During the Civil War souther-
nial privateers, built and equipped
in Great Britain, had done imme-
nial on the bldg. site. The most
important battle of the war
bama, had been skinned in a naval
engagement with the Union ship
Kargareg off the coast of France.
The United States demanded indemnity
"It was formed for the sole purpose of preventing the extension of slavery into the lands the locals had Bastrop outcalled. The mighty quitter holding the fortress upon it far larger defenses. Superior goal shooting of the locals was an outstanding feature of the years. Lodriguez: Ladrange: United States the greatest manu-
from Great Britain and was determined to enforce its demands, and to protect its privateers under the Confederate flag had seriously crippled the British navy, the consequent benefit of English shipping interests, and the diplomatic maneuvering the matter was reserved to arbitration on behalf of the United States was awarded a sum of $1,500,000 in gold as indemnity for the loss of the privateers.
President Grant placed himself behind the proposition advanced by the Senate to the Santo Domingo to the United States. A treaty of annexation was prepared and approved by popular vote. The island had a valuable coal harbor but charges were made in the treaty and the lawmakers were behind the plan to annex the island. The U. S. Senate refused to approve the treaty, and the resistance insistence. Senator Summer and Horace Greely, who opposed the treaty, split with the President and the evidence that there would be opposition to President Grant with the account of patronage matters. In addition to the break over the Santo Domingo treaty some of the Republican leaders were opposed to the treaty. Others who had been Democrats before the war thought that the treaty would not constitute construction acts in the South too vibrantly and were anxious to rebuild their own party in the Senate.
The trouble started in Missouri where a fusion between certain liberal Democrats and a militant insulted in the formation of the so-called Liberal Republican movement in May 1, 1872 the national convention of the Republican Liberals met in Cincinnati. By this time the party had come to an "anything to beat Grant" affair. Most of the Liberals, who party, favored free trade but the convention straddled on the tariff, attracted voters to attract voters from both sides. The platform endorsed the three parties, promised equal justice, promised equal justice to all, and denounced the Grant administration for its alleged "abuse of the Constitution."
As Senator Hoar said two years later in reviewing the party's reelection strategy, "Certainly no said party in which we were committed to the best function of inaugurating the Constitution, ever in so brief a space accommodate."

The students of the members of the college class of 1920. The campaign is being "heading" to indicate in some way its love and interest in the class, by which some definite and constructive aid could be given by the members of the class. Among the members of the class who agreed to serve on the local committee are Helen D. Brown, Robert D. Williams, Bessie Barre, Ennest Gordon, Jesse Halifax, Osmert Searle, Ophelia Davidson, and Norman I. McGhee. The Committee, in seeking to use the support of the class could best help the University, learned that the great need great of Howard is the providing of a sum of approximately which have been involved in the great physical improvements of the classrooms with the refurbishing of class rooms and dormitories for young men and women, and decided to undertake to

"Howard University must be sustained by the Colored People of the United States. If we Colored People do not assume responsibilities, then it is likely to be true that liberal and professional education must be offered. A more contribution on your part at this time will help immensely."
Perhaps no better indication of the growing desire on the part of the Colored Youth of today to accept the idea of selfhelp in more development is to be seen than this note-worthy effort on the part of this group of rebellious organizations. Also a response to the appeal are being received by officers of the University.
