Jack Johnson, cleverest ring general that the world ever saw, fictitious champion whose prowess once was the wonder of millions, whose appearance in the ring once brought him hundreds of thousands of dollars—now a "has been" cast off from even genuine sympathy by the excesses to which he went and the satine actions to which he was wedded. MEMBER NATIONAL NEGRO PRESS ASSOCIATION. Published every Saturday Morning in the Year at 2000 Swine Dye. THE DALLAS EXPRESS PUBLISHING CO. (Reprinted) DALLAS, WISCONSIN Sikh, a few months ago, the pride of France and the idol of Negroes everywhere, since his stay in America, known as a savage whose jungle instincts have been trained and controlled only enough to make him dangerous in the ring but unfit for the companionship of civilized people—now broken by beginning to travel the lane that leads to balkan and nenay. Foreign Advertising Representative: W. b. 212 Company, 600 South Dewitt Street, Chicago, IL. W. b. 212 Company, 604 Morton Bldg., 112 South Street, New York, N.Y. There is something pathetic in these cases. They rather are provocative of pity. And yet they are almost identical with the life story of all of our champions of the prize. Joe Gans, Sam Langford, Joe Janette have seen their day, have handled their thousands, have basked in the rays of their success, have passed to penny, misery and in most cases to unknown graves. Entered at Post Office at Dallas Texas as second-olace matter under Art of Congress, March, 1879 Do black fighters not have in them the stuff of which substantial men are made? Are they developed only in body while their brains remain those of little children? The story of all men of the ring is not like theirs. Any arrows extending upon the character, are arrows of the same kind, and firm or corporation which may appear in the columns of a book, or in the columns of its being correctly corrupted upon its being corrected. It can be hoped that somewhere somehow, if our race is to continue to produce men whose bodies can win for their riches and fame, one or some may eventually come forth who have with their splendid bodies, brains capable of great power, to have been able to endure and had enough champions who were as far as brain was concerned only, "monkey men." And while as in the cases of Ski and Johnson, Gans and others, we appreciate their prowess and glory in the reputations which they make, the sordidness of their finish robs them of their glamor and we see them as nothing but poor, pitiful, ignorant children. We see them as nothing but children, ripped and ripped. We pity them but we cannot sympathize with them for they fall too far short of what they ought to be. scriptings in Advance ONE YEAR ..... $22.50 MOON ..... $22.50 SUNSHINE MONTHS ..... $7.50 SINGLE COPY ..... $22.50 THE DALLAS EXPRESS has never hosted the white feather, another hat it has been dressed by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the floral mouth. It is a plain, every day sensible, conservative avocation. It is a pale pink paning brewery; files on a dangling flag? It professes a patriotism as broad as our country. Its love of even handsied jacques covers all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are proud to stand with us. This ground is holy. THE INDIAN BECOMES A CITIZEN THE INDIAN BECOMES A CITIZEN The door of citizenship will be opened to approximately 125,000 American Indians by a bill favorably reported by the Committee on Indian Affairs of the House of Representatives. The measure introduced by Chairman Homer P. Snyder, of the House Committee on Indian Affairs, and indorsed by Commissioner Burke, of the Indian office, authorizes the Secretary of the Interior at his discretion to issue a certificate of citizenship to any non-citizen Indian born within the territorial limits of the United States who may apply for it. Upon the issuance of the citizenship, the bill states, "he or she shall be a citizen of the United States." A provisional stipulates that the citizenship shall not in any manner impair or otherwise affect the right of the Indian to tribal and other property. W. E. KING. THE COMMISSION REPORTS Already two-thirds of the entire Indian population of the United States enjoy American citizenship, the actual The Virginia Island Commission has returned and made public its findings and recommendations and has G. O. P. an as far as a certain group among its concern, is brightest, recommends are none things like those concerning the economic status, etc., which are important enough to justify the expense in funding. But we cannot believe that enough of importance will be attached to this report to lead to action. The sending of the commission was an act of political expediency purely It was good that some amun could be so honored by the ad- dition of the book, but it is in mind that the masses of Negro voters in America do not pay the amount of attention to such honor. They expect for their support of the G. O. P. more remoral leg- lory and promises of better things to come. But what difference will it make if the Indian does not choose to accept this citizenship? The fact is that whether he does or does not will not make one particle of difference. America as such will not care. And in that particular feature of the case of the American Indian lies a question which should challenge the attention of many of our thinkers. Now that the Commission has returned what? We suggest Cohen and the Dyer BII. The Indian, American Aberigine who could not think but that he was lord of the prairies, asked no quarter and gave none. Though fighting an enemy of superior skill, ability and arms, he used no diplomacy and his finish has been glorious but sad. As a force to be reckoned with or even thought of in *America*, the Indian has ceased to exist. Current dispatches state that Secretary A. L. Holley speaks in the highest terms here and stay in his office. He will also be himself here and he is highly hopeful that the perfection of a better state business league that will function efficiently in allying with the state program of the National League. The program of the national league which is being pushed rapidly is the League of Nations, a program to tour inactive states during the spring month agrees well for a Texas state to be active than has before been the case. Texas can well afford to be a state to actively bring into existence a national league with a program attenuated to benefit Nogue business. It must not happen that the promises made to Mr. Holley and his staff have been allowed to die. Rather, it must happen that Texas local leagues become parts of an energetic state body which can be felt in the national body. Health Week gives opportunity for racial unity in the kind that will count in deeds and acts. Family persons can productive persons. Making Health Week successful makes more health awareness should be the best ever. Good prizes can be best beaten in our children by letting them learn of the great figures among our Negro literature about them. This information it should always be within their reach. Good manners in children must be celebrated as carefully as their health. Home is the logical place for such cultivation to begin teachers can only ensure it. A GREATER MAN THAN JESUS CHRIST." By William Pickens (A. N. F). No, no that brilliant idea is not original with us; it comes from Jesus himself and the Garry fleeting, Richmond, Indiana, like most Garryvelies, he did not reason the state for a mission, he did not do and we will do it. It is second nature with much people to declare, but we our habit to GIVE THE RESPONSIBILITY. "Marcus Garvey is a greater man than Jesus Christ," said the man who gave us the name, and we give it the following reasons. 1. Christ collected no money. 2. Garvey has collected a million 2. Christ caught and enrolled one man who was catching fish—"He was a man who could swim thousands of the "poor" fish themselves. 3. Christ tried the nearly enough possible thing to get them all to Heaven—Garry tried the Absolutely Impossible Thing; to Guillain all to give Africa. 4. Christ and one of his disciples "walked the water" of a FOR THE WOMA Have you ever stopped to consider how a person old is the most appropriate woman who is comparatively young according to age? This may be traced to the lack of knowledge. Selfishness is another great enemy of youth. The woman who is self-centered is so negative and so selfish that selfishness maintains that every one else is selfish. Selfishness cuts off from our fellows and destroys our lives. Selfishness is a terrible hater of old age. 000 000 The woman who sees selfishness includes sarcasm. What was "The Freed- men?" The Freedman's Bureau" was created by an act of Congress, March 3rd, 1885. Its work extended far beyond education, embracing abandoned lands and supplying the Negroes with food and medicine. It also pointed commissioner. The Bureau founded many schools in localities which had been in the line of slavery, and with the others established by its agency, were placed under some systematic supervision. In some cases, the Bureau was entirely by aid of the funds of the Bureau, but it had the cooperation and assistance of several religious and benevolent societies. Contrast the case of the Indian in America with that of the Jew all over the world or of the Negro in America. Their methods have been as different as the results that now are but which race was wiser? The Indian, is almost extinct but has survived for centuries. The Negro, is broken spirit. The Jew and Negro, world's greatest diplomats through force of prejudice and circumstances have 106. Who was Nora Gordon? Gordon was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to parents who were former members of parents who were former members of known gen. Gordon. She attested the public schools of La. They lack the glorious fighting history of the Indian but are the proud possessors of a well founded hope for future successes through lessened prejudice and increased training. In the years that are to come their descent will be increasing hosts among the formest workers of the world. Shor But which race was wiser cannot be said. For who knows but that the Indian with his glorious past is not more nearly content than are we with our hopes for a glorious future? NEGRO ART AND NEGRO PATRONS Negro art at least in Florida has received a boast that is commendable in many ways. The Pythians of that state have given to Adams, well known as a painter of genius, the commission to paint a full life portrait of Grand Chancellor Andrews of that state. The price to be paid for the porch is $10,000. It will be in the new Pyrian Temple soon to be completed by them. Boston has a social organization named "The Boll-Wellite." Included in our 268 manufacturers are all women. There are sixteen Colored ticket and station agents employed by steam transportation companies. Here is a worthy bit of recognition of the genius of the race by his own members and it is to be hoped that the time is not far distant when such occurrences will become the rule rather than the exception. Negro artists must have support and that support ought to come from within the race as often as it is possible. Why did the northern democrate oppose publishing the "yes and yes" put on the Cohen rejection. We have 566 "indulner" classified as semi-professionals, but this numbness includes the numbness "hectora." Few appreciate art as such. But it can be contended, and rightly so that our development has not reached that point at which wide appreciation of the aesthetic can be expected. But with our material progress has come a greater appreciation of the intrinsic value that artists should find patrons among their own group. The Florida Pythians have begun well. Statistics show that we have only two Coloured female "hunters and trappers." The count must be wrong! THE MIRROR F PUBLIC OPINION Little lake in Palestine - Garvey and a crowd on his disciples are killed in the Atlantic Ocean to Liberia. 5. The African Methodist Episcopal Zion church will be in general conference in Louisville, Kentucky, and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion church will be in general conference in Indianapolis, Ind., and both are to elect bishops and general officers of course. They will have political leaders to be busy calling men to episcopal honors, and if he has called men to claim and they will have to call men to have to call men for pastor, for the list in the book are pastors. We hope are pastors, presiding elder and general officers. We will all watch and see if the men will be determined by the votes. In the African Methodist Episcopal church we have men as Rev. R. Cramon, A. L. Gaines, R. A. Grant, R. W. Mance, A. M. Hill, C. R. Camomel, A. G. Laines, R. Campbell, G. H. Young, E. J. Howard, S. D. Butler, H. A. Carr, J. C. Anderson, A. L. Gaines, J. Campbell, G. H. Peek, W. H. Thomas, C. M. Thomas, W. H. Mixon, J. W. Walker, R. N. Newman, whose names I do not remember nor do I know many of them in the Zion church. I do know who walks to lay down his editorial pen and take up an episcopal pen, and Dr. Jones, from Washington, New York and some others. Then the Lord would have Reva. Noah Williams C. W. Ahlgren, pastorate and be Missionary see retirements, and the Lord can only use one of them, and let us see he have heard God's voice telling us have heard God's voice telling us to support Dr. G. W. Allen but I am of the opinion when the Lord wand Dr. Allen to give us advice. He directed him to, edit the Southern Christian Recorder then he is going to drive Dr. Allen uninterrupted. He would advise Dr. Clalborne Harmon, and all the rest to turn their eyes some other way for them. There are some other Reva. S. J. Johann, J. W. Hare, N. W. Jamison, J. T. Hallowell, J. E. Beard, succeeded the late B. F. Watson. This may be so, but only one of them can be elected and it seems that the Lord is directing them. Dr. H. S. Sims, one of the best bosses in foxes, says that the Lord should be his financial secretary he is making the Lord will preside over it from the house top and enriched it from the house top and other every top, yet I don't know what he is presiding over. Prof. John R. Hawkins. Time will The Lord has called upon Rev. I will still have ringing in my ears the pass word, "Live Onions and Bacon." I am one of the most revered people in the country. Let the good work go on. There will come the National Republican convention in Cleveland, and the people are going there, and this will be followed right in the same city and state, the National Baptist Convention, Dr. D. W. Cannon, has just closed a meeting in Macon, Ga., and other things have taken There have been a few things on here, and among the other things, Hon. John L. Webb, of New York, has wonderful power and ability has been here holding some meetings He is Supreme custodian of the church and the men interested in the uplift and betterment of our people. It doesn't believe it just get some of the literature. Go to Hot Spring National Park and see that great place in the home of that man and the office building being erected. I have had the pleasure of stopping in the home of that man and the office building of D. G. Griffin of Bedul Baptist church. There is not much fuss made about it, but Dr. Griffin is a pastor and pastors in this country. He goes to his people with thought every Sunday and that thought around pastors in this country. He takes the time to prepare for his work, and when he preaches he outreaches the best whether the congregation be large or small. Then when he was looking around for accommodation, he met to a, well balanced, well trained woman, he have been blessed with two sons and one daughter in St. Augustine, Florida getting ready to serve the people and follow the footsteps of father I want to congratulate the Rev. STRANGERS IN THE DARK Part I BY GERTRUDE SANBORN Author of *Velled Aristocrat* (Release) and *The Famous Writers Guild* John Howard went to the station the other day to meet his mother who was coming from the airport in Chicago. Both looked very happy. They were well dressed and they went away together in Chicago. Both looked very happily. They were rather strange for it was only two years ago that John Howard was undeniably the deputy, looked at the deput, looked at his matty apparel and exclaimed. "Well, Howard, you must have struck him hard." He smiled broadly. They had never seen a man in the city, even heard of each other. One was well dressed. The other shabby. One was a white man—the other black. Yet though different in appearance they were the same. The proponents of the bill had bespoken that silver dollars would be deposited and provided in the act that the dollars could be deposited with the Secretary of the Treasury and so-called the "silver certificates" became so popular that they have been in general circulation ever since. During the civil war the so-called "greenback" paper money issued by the Treasury in general circulation until in 1864 it took about three green-back bills to buy a dollar of speculation of speculative payments was debated for several weeks following the close of the war and finally Congress set a policy that the greenbacks should be redeemable in gold.
