BIRTHS AND DEATHS IN DALLAS The month of Magenares begin twenty-one deaths and eight births among Negrites in the City of Chichén Itzá, almost as three to one. Carry the thinking into many months and multiply by scores of clines and births, and be devastated by disease but not increased by production. In the past few months, we have dwindling away, that will forever remove from America her most battling but interesting problem. The army may hope for a sturious future for black Americans. It must be realized that most of the fat too frequent deaths among us are result of the health of infants of importance of how to live and carelessness to the laws of health. It has seen demonstrable and the result of the life expectancy of Negroes in the life expectancy of Negroes have already increased the average life over five. In the contemplation of these figures the month of Magenares there is ample argument for the active promotion of Health Week. An nature done her new clothes, ownership of homes should not forget that prevenes do not suffer from abandon, plaited and kept attractive. Our idea of a real growth is the husband who plays, sick or tired when the wife wants the flower and dog. Judging by the length of time the husband plays, sick or tired when the wife wants the flower and dog, all former attempts at mending on the part of politicians have given their children a play. The chances of this investigation take the form of small successes. They are being given, not enjoyed on a larger The Chicago Senatorial Situation The Chicago Senatorial Situation It seems that Attorney Nathan Taylor in his race for Congress against Martin B. Madden has gained such a following among Curvyettes and migrants from the South as to make his candidacy a thing to be feared rather than taken lightly. For many years the return of Madden to Congress has been taken for granted. The contest has waxed so warm according to the associated Negro Press that older leaders among Negroes have been placed in a peculiar light. "Black for Black" is the slogan of the Taylor forces. Madden is white and they clamor to be included. The black men who have to be white, black men have no reason to support him. They seem not to argue the comparative fitness of the men at all. Color has blinded them and they are ready to brand as traitors, those who would argue that their support of Madden was justifiable. And according to the A. N. P. dispatch, the next two weeks will see the battle fought out between the few smart Negroes and the many slow Negroes, the smart ones for the white and the slow ones for the black. The coming two weeks will witness what the success the few smart will have in destroying the race pride in the many slow. This is a peculiar situation to be sure but one of the manners of the race is to bring the thousands of our Southern folks will bring to the attention of this country during the next few years. It may happen that the many slow ones will out-wit the few smart ones in spite of their money and superior political skill. Our race pride down South has been born of a distrust of people made large by many generations of experience with them. It may happen that "black for black" will charm them more than any other means. In fact, it is not the case that black people should if this should come to pass it would be unfortunate in some ways but highly inspiring in another. It would be unfortunate for Madden with his record, to be ousted. He has been an unbiased, fair representative of all of his constituents. And his power for good has been exceptional. But could it happen that the spirit of "black for black" could so inspire the whole citizenry of Chicago to the extent that in every movement for development, all of the Negro population would be represented by a moth force, the benefit would far outweigh the immediate loss of the beneficial influence of Madden. "Black for black" sounds crude and rather primitive, but how does it differ from the thousands of forms in which the absolute belief of our Caucasian neighbors in "Nordic Superiority" has made itself known? That either is right cannot be argued. When taken to lengths as undue as we would, the Carveries in Chicago and the North and the Caucasian organizations there know that it is dangerous to society and subversive of real democracy and mutual understanding. But among us it has, heretofore been conspicuous by its absence. Now that it has appeared, even if in an unfortunate a way as it now seems in Chicago, it should be directed into highly constructive channels but by no means crushed. Politics and politicians will not find it perpetually a hindrance. A New Color Law In Virginia A New Color Law In Virginia Virginia has recently passed a new law to definitely establish the color line. It appears that for many years her "near white" population has enjoyed the same school and living privileges as her all white population and so it has been decided that a halt must be called. The schools furnished the reason for the enactment of this bit of legislation. The recent discovery of children of Color in the white schools of Richmond brought about the alarm. The teachers compelled their features and demanded birth certificates. Visual evidence showed the father registered as "Colored." They were excluded. Several years ago a principal of a high school stated that a family of Color had children in his school. Positive of this he at that time lacked documentary proof, and so let the matter slide. John Powell, the Angle-Saxon club, recently told of a certain district containing a large tribe of the same summer. They are regarded as kin, he said. Some of them claim to be white and have privileges accordingly. Others of the same family claim to be Colored. Some are neutral. Some, he says, are covered as "blood" and do not know it; others know of a remote African ancestor, but the world does not, and they do not publish it. Senate bill No. 219 which recently passed the state legislature is now a law and is called the "New Virginia law to preserve racial integrity." This bill aims to correct a condition, the whites say, which only the more thoughtful people of the state know the existence of." It is estimated that there are in Virginia from 10,000 to 20,000, possibly more, that are not white, and possess an admixture of African blood. They have passed on their heritage to glo-Saxon society and submerged themselves through marriage. Under the new law, however, a person with one-sixteenth Indian blood is considered white. Strange it is that Virginia just now wakes up to the danger of not having restrictions placed upon these "Negroes." How could such a condition have maintained so long? But here again is one of the many complexes of the eternal color question. Here is only another instance of how the sins of the fathers become the problem of their children. The greatest curse and the hardest thing to explain in America today is the existence of three hundreds of blacks, the incestuous human beings, born of black mothers and white fathers, but in reality being made to suffer as all black. They will forever stand as inescapable proof of the inconsistency of Nordre thought and action. Virginia has done her best to keep her rares pure—in the future. But that past will forever protrude itself and mock the sinestest efforts of Virginia's future, even as it does all over the Southland. The hysteria at Washington, begun as an attempt to uncover fraud in oil leases has spread to every conceivable extent, over-stepped some limits and become an orgy of "mudslinging" the like of which has never before been seen. In many respects it is unfortunate but in most, it has become only idiotic. But ludicrous or not it will have a political significance. Resulting from this hysteria is the attempt at a Senate inquiry into the affairs of several of the Texas land company which are alleged to have been guilty of fraudulent mining in the sale of acreage in the lower Rio Grande Valley. The investigation takes on peculiar interest for Texas Republica when it is remembered that E. B. Creagar, National committeeman for the state since the death of committeeman McGregor, has been named as one who is supposed to have been guilty of using his influence to stop an investigation into the affairs of one of these companies in which he was interested. The truth or falsity of the charges of Senator Hoffin who introduced the resolution authorizing the inquiry will be, we suppose, to the complete satisfaction of all Senate members. The same crime and charges might come to have a more than ordinary number. Texas should some of the same hysteria as now characterizes Washington enter the ranks of Mr. Creagar's cohorts. THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, MARCH 20. THE MIRROR PUBLIC OPINION PLAY SUMMER AND DANCE—IF We note that the M. E. The surreverent, in order to have some degree of justification, permits the members to determine for themselves the rules for card playing and dance. First there is the stinging indictment of liquor in these days when liquor makes a bottle and a bottle is poured out. The liquor of pre-valued days had enough death time to be poured out, the time was better than the best of these times. Secondly, there is real danger, and women irresponsable, so rum soaked and crayy they start in to fight and some one or more are killed. The liquor of other days was mild in its action compared with the danger behind the modern booby traps. There are far too many of our race who place too little value upon the death of a person and kill each other with an abandon which is horrible. Easy living, fast living, liquor parties, "kombat" games, and violence in which the denizens of our under world ravel spell the causes of this shocking rise of blood and bloodshed. If You Don't Think You Owe Them Anything, Have you ever stopped and wondered what will become of your little boy or girl if you should suddenly die? Do you know how the dear little children of your best friend who died last year or the year before are now getting along—or are you that much interested in them that this thought ever occurred to you? WHO WILL PAY YOUR CHILD'S EXPENSES, WHO IS NOW CARING FOR AND REARING YOUR FRIEND'S CHILDREN? Read for yourself what the Dickson Colored Orphange is doing toward taking care of the unfortunates of this State. Read about the work we have done, about the plans which we have in mind, about the struggles we are having to keep the wolf away from the door and then decide whether or not you do not owe it to your self-respect to help this great work. An Appeal to the White Friends and The Result. MY DEAR FRIENDS: I am very much concerned about the educational development, training and domestic service generally for the Negro boys in the girls. Two-thirds of all Negroes in America are in the South. Too many of the Negroes in the South are ignorant and uneducated, and always will be until we can interest the geared white people of America and of the South to help us. The Negroes are not getting the support, the kind of support we are here; we have been here all the time; we are going here; we have been stayed by you from every angle; we have fought in every battle; we have fought during the great Civil War while you were fighting, for the country. We have a closer co-operative relationship from you, I am appealing to the white students of Texas to help me to make the Dickerson school of its kind in America. We can do it, and, with God's help and your assistance, we will do it. Our boys and girls can be made domestic servants, prepared THE RESULT Mr. Reese Allen ..... $2500 Mr. F. K. What Will Be The Result. Glmer, Texas, March 25, 1924 To the Lodges of the city of Dallas. Ladies and Gentlemen:— I am writing because I believe you are interested in the moral uplift and the educational development of Negro boys and girls of the race. Two hundred thirty-eight children will suffer unacquainted with your support and co-operation; 18 employees will go without you; we can get the proper support. Are you a lover of orphan children; do you believe they ought to be reared, trained and ed- uicated? If so, will you on this effort? Please give us $25.00, if you cannot give $25.00, give what you feel, out of your mind and heart, and give it. We will thank you, God will bless you, the orphan children will be benefited. Mail your contributions to P. O. Box 200, Glmer, Texas. Thanking you in advance for whatever you may do for this cause, we will be grateful. Respectfully yours. W. L. DICKSON, Pres.-Mgr. Smith and Company $194,843.31 REV. W. L. DICKSON. What Are Negro Federated Organizations Doing? I am very much pained, when I sit and think of the 26 years that I have stood at the head of the Dickson Colored Orphanage, bought and paid for 1186 acres of land that contains on it 42 buildings, little and big. Seven thousand five hundred eighty-eight children have been enrolled, and 144 girls married to good men, several students graduated and are teaching school, 44 boys married to good women, all are making good citizens, and all are members of some church. Two hundred thirty-seven children have been enrolled, and no students are taught at the Home, some are teachers, farmers, two agents on the field and at a cost of $2,700.00 per month to run this Institution, and yet we can not interest our leaders throughout the State, because of their littleness and undeveloped condition. The Dickson Colored Orphanage maintains a regular high school with a full corp of teachers. Domestic Science, Domestic Art, Truck gardening, farming and Manual Training are being taught. Why can't the leaders of the race get under such a school like this. (Fakes and Fakies) There are some fakes and fakes going through the country up to the public, a great school and hospitals that they have only on paper. Nothing in the world to show the public of what they are doing with the money. Going through the country collecting money, and the Negroes, pastors and Politicians haven't got the backbone, nor manhood enough to state to the public and to defend their positions on (Schools Born Over Night) one of these people starts a school in Dallas, collect a lot of money, and may start one million dollar four State Hospital, collect the nine Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma with no hospital on earth, except this head. Then another man starts a school in Dallas, falls, then goes to Texas, and then comes back to Oklahoma, then comes back to Texas, and over night, births a school with a 100 students turned away, and this man is permitted to go over the border to Texas, and then comes back to Oklahoma, going to the world in interest of a school known as the "KEMP INDUGE," written on paper. But these people get better support than I did, and I have to give them a lot of honest, I have told the truth, I have given to the public, an institution on $125,000,000 at a low estimation. col in Dalton, collect a lot of money, fail in four state Hospital, collect the money on with no hospital on earth, except on pts. a school in Dalton, falls then, goes on over night, births a school with a 1000 this man is permitted to over the Cow in school known as the "KEMP INDUSTRY" people get better support than I get, a people from every angle, I have given to the public, an institution wation. Some of these people start a school in Dallas, collect a lot of money, fall and run away, others start one million dollar four State Hospital, collect the money in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma with no hospital on earth, except on paper, and others start a school in California, collect the money in Longview start a school there and fails then goes to California, starts a school there and fails, then comes back to Texas, and over night, births a school with a 1000 acres of land, 800 students turned away, and this man is permitted to go over the Country and returns to Texas, and then goes to California, starts a school are singing to the world in interest of a school known as the "KEMP INDUSTRIAL COLLEGE" written on paper. But these people get better support than I get, when I have never left the State, I have stayed by the people from every angle, I have tried to get the people to the public, an institution with a valuation of $125,000,000 at a low estimation. (What Is The Matter With the Race?) will the Negro leaders will open their mouth on the right things forent and for the perpetuation of the Race, we will not get anywhere in the past. We will not get anywhere in the past. Irespective as to whom it is, whether black or white, we will put forth an imputation for an effort to raise $125,000. I shall do it honestly woth hods and fair dealings. I mall and do now appeal to the citizens of the city to help me in my work. I will not give up in our community, raise some amount, do something to help us I be able of humanity to do something to help us encourage the hearts of us at Jule a year ago, we lost $25,000 by fire, you know it, why not why not help, why not get up and let us try as a race to show ourselves that we are a community. Transmute from every angle or religion, respective to our creeds or churches. The Dickson Clement Orphanarian Institution, it is not a party to any body's church. it is mana, section, section, politics or State, we shall ask so we are asking the support of the public, we are asking each pastor at 11:00 o'clock on the second Sunday in April, 1924, to send us a letter to the Negro community of the day, and please mail all contributions to W. L. Dickson, P. O. Dickson, asking you in advance for all you may do for this work, I wish to re-very respectfully your, W. L. Dickson. Until the Negro leaders will open their mouth on the right side for the advancement and for the perpetuation of the Race, we will not get anywhere. Strap yourself in and give your best effort to achieve harmony and integrity, irrespective as to whom it is, whether black or white, woman or man. I am putting forth an effort to raise $12,500,000. I shall do it honestly with honest methods and fair dealings. I shall and do now appeal to the citizens of Dallas and to the Citizens of Houston to help me to matter in your community, raise some amount, do something to help us. I beg you in the name of humanity to do something to help us encourage the hearts of these orphan children. For a year ago, we lost $25,000,000 by fire, you know it, why not do something, why not help, why not get up and let us try as a race to show ourselves worthy. I am appealing in the interest of the Dilton Colored Orphanage, to members of my community, so we are adding the support of the public pastor to pray for the Orphanage at 11:00 o'clock on the second Sunday in April, 1924. We are asking you to please take up an after collection at the close of your service the day, and please mail all contributions to W. L. Dickson, P. O. Box 209, Glimer, IL. My name is Address City State State..... Howard went into close and careful study of the papers before he asked Whitman questions concerning them and to make note which he attached to each packet as he finished with it. Finally Whitman left the dwarf room and the two men, who a few hours earlier had been utter stranger to Whitman, worked earnestly till the bloom of a big clock called their hour would end, and hours would endoubtedly put them into better form to pursue an interesting matter on the more It was very late indeed when Howard closed the front door of the house and stepped off over the front pavement. He arose, very early the next day, and hurried to the building to get a doctor. He gave up his job there and turned it over to a young doctor. He worked for many a day that Howard's law business would pick up as that he might have a steady job. Howard discharged the old agents and employed some that he had never repaired. He ordered necessary repairs made and he gave Whitman plenty of small matters to abide by. He also ordered that and that awakened his interest in his own affairs without taxing him too much at the coal yards. "I got crushed in a shaft at the coal yards," he取 any compensation. Howard inquired. "I didn't get noticed," gapped the man. "Not even a civil word been hailton" "him for years." After some more questioning Whitman discovered that the man had been a close friend of a company whose president had been a close friend of him. He scribbled a note to him on his card and Howard to see the president of the company. He was not known that Whitman He got in simply because of the magic name of Whitman for it was not known that Whitman "Who are you?" the president asked automatically at the sight of a man in a suit, his arm in his hair. "Are you Whitman's junior?" "I am his attorney Howard enjoyed the anticipation that rose from Whitman's tenant has a just claim against you, but we don't propose reasonable settlement. Whitman—man well, see here—our attorney is crowded with work just like most of these small cases for me that are right over the neighborhood of Whitman's property. "Who are you?" Howard. The days were soon filled for both Howard and Whitman. While Whitman is a limited portion of Whitman's wealth he acquired something that stood him in much better shape and life before the year was over Howard had negotiated the sale of his north shore property, retaining the land. PAGE SEVEN. Wilman is erect a modern apartment hotel. These are just a few of the reasons that enabled Howard to head to Chicago and away from the station, shining new car to a pretty little house that he had bought for her on the South side of Chicago. And talking about luck. What happens when you work for "BeWork, something to fill up one time," I call that good luck. We already know Howard devised a plan to get the job. But however we turn it or twist it, it is like the old riddle does not matter which came first in this instance—lock or work, or unexpected association worked a couple of times together to strangle in the dark who through a lucky and unexpected association worked a couple of times together. Col. Midnight's Weekly Letter. I am getting myself together to be on hand when the general manager of the company, Prof. Aaron E. Malone, A. M. president of Poro College, has invited me to be there. Lou uses the time to talk about what will and will be reheated. He is a man who believes in doing things he is going to do something that he is going to do the time. Come and come it must. I am going to be there I think I will have to bring this letter to a stop. So many of our newspaper friends are getting interested in the conference. I am going to be there I hope as I told you, and if I am going to be waking, telling you just just what is going on. I am informed that Charles Stewart is going to forwarn me with the news. I am going to be in Louisiana when you read this letter, but will be back here to talk about the gout and the damnishness to tell you. Look As I close this letter information comes to me that Bishop Hwon Yi will be allotted the job that he will soon be in all the work he will continue in the good work he is doing for the Master. He is a great man. God bless him and his family. ```markdown ``` J. O. MIDNIGHT.
