Without friends, homeless and addicted, the only hope was justice and fair play; whereupon the Jim Crow law of Arkansas was read to the Bishop, and while he did the condition, was the God and Saviour their so-called Christian masters had given them. Meanwhile, in their terrible want and distress, their long suffering hearts filled with an intimation of their fate, they began to sing out of their House of Bodnage the saddest, sweetest music the world has ever heard. These bitter sweet spirituals—for they were the most spirituals of their simple pleas, so expressive of the young yet child-like faith their makers felt—were the music of a caged bird that can remember only the fields and blue skies it once knew.

Wichita Falls, Texas, April 11—Rev. J. E. Boyd, well known in Texas for his several attempts at founding schools is in jail according to dispatches received by The Express from one of its representatives, charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. It is alleged that in an investigation conducted by J. W. Bryce, sheriff of Uphar County it was found that there was no school in operation at Camp Switch, the place at which the school for which Rev. Boyd was collecting money, was supposed to be located. It was found that there were no 400 acres owned by the school as was claimed and no school in operation there at all.
Rev. Boyd is an old resident of Dallas and is well known here for the many attempts which he has made at founding industrial schools. Nearly fifteen years ago he came in.

For many weeks he has appeared in the churches of Dallas and vicinity and solicited funds. Melson, Principal of the audience assembled in the Institute Chapel for these exercises. Dr. Williams, declared Booker Washington, shaped the opinion of black and white alike. Commenting upon the discouragements which Booker Washington overcame, Dr. Williams said: "There were those who doubted, denied, opposed, challenged, his purported principles, his leadership, and declared his principles and his purpose, a reason to meet the duty of the future. Too often he came into his own and his own accepted him not. His lofty attitude and his leadership, he met the duty of the day, were wounded and sacrificed and death came premature to one worm "Many men, the leaders of our day and of the past half century 1 were wounded, a wider view, a steander courage, a more impartial judgment.

has never hotened the white leather, wither屑 it hownbaked by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the flannel mouth. It is a plate, every day, sensible, conservative newspaper, which frisms no sail to catch the pissing breast; files no duluth flag. It projeszt a patriotism as broad as breast, as handsome as arm, as handsome as pardon covers all the territory accepted by the human race. This is creamy high ground, but we live on it and are proparing. Days of the press come and stand with us. This ground is hilly. W. E. KING.
DO WE REALLY POSSESS
THE REAL DALLAS
SPIRIT?
Some time ago we took occasion to speak about the spirit of the grouch—the spirit that caused so many of us to quarrel over and refuse to help to make successful the grouch. We were grateful to benefit us to, but which the long run benefited us as members of a common group. And now we are wondering whether or not we can benefit from the benefits it that has been responsible for the tremendous growth and prosperity of our city. In many respects our city is remarkable. It is not alienated on any waterway. It has no hiatus in development. It is cinery; in the days of its beginning it was bleast with none of the things that are ordinarily supposed to thrive and flourish. But it has grown and thrived and flourished right so, the Metropolis of the Southwest and where the races of men gather some word of its
MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENSES
The Express does not at this time take the position that the arrest of the preacher referred to in the dispatch published elsewhere in this issue was in any way justifiable. In fact the case does not come into the consideration except as it gives opportunity for the statement that the time has come when we as a people must be more careful as to how and when we support the many people who come into our midst seeking aid for first one and then another cause which we have not investigated and which we never investigate.
Our sympathies are very often allowed to riot with our better judgment and we find ourselves victims rather than philanthropists.
It is probable that the readiness with which we indiscriminately help the various causes which make their appeals to us is due to the feeling long inculcated in us that if we failed to help the causes of our fellows, they would lack support entirely. That has been true in large measures. But it no longer maintains to the extent that we are called upon to give without thinking.
How often have we gone to church and found there some representative of some institution either real or fancied who produced a smooth, suave story and asked for a collection and received it. And when that person heard no more of him or his institution. When not his cause was just or not we never found out, nor did we seek to find
There is no reason to feel that we have not often been victimized by such persons. Nor is it common sense to argue that the giving was justified.
We are a poor race.If we ever reach the place in the financial world that we hope to reach, it will be by paying more strict attention to the way in which our moneys are allowed to go. We regard we can learn much from our neighbors. As far as we are concerned, to a great extent, their giving is as ours, indiscriminate; they think little of the reputation of the solicitor. And it happens very often that they are victimized. But in the case of their own, they are much more careful. They investigate and seek to find out the character of the thing for which the support is asked and if it is found not to be as claimed, they do their best to see that the one responsible for the imposition is properly handled. It pays them and it will pay us to do likewise. It pays charity as much as nature and ready charity are as much enemies to our progress as the thieves who steal from us our choiest possessions. They turn to their own uses money which should go for really constructive purpose.
Let us begin to think at least once before giving so readily to all who come in the name of some thing of which we know but little. Let us investigate more thoroughly the claims of such persons who come among us. If their claims are just, they will welcome the investigation. And if their claims are not just, they will welcome the investigation of the worth of the thing in question. If their claims are false, we can refrain from giving and, by exposure of the imposter, protect the interests of our fellows in other places.
Much money is obtained from us under false pretenses Too much. It will show progress along the proper line if we seek to investigate more and thus protect ourselves against the unsuperulous among us and the other race as well.
THE RAILROAD AND US
THE RAILROAD AND US
A well loved and much respected Bishop of the C. M. E. Church has been taken by force from a train in the state of Arkansas and fined for breaking the "Jim Crow" law of that state. It is only one more of the many things that have been done in regard to the traveling facilities for Negroes. The fare of the Bishop was paid. He was not attempting to do anything but ride comfortably in traveling the long distance from his home to the field of his labors. And yet he was dragged from the train in no gentle manner and was taken to the treatment of insult and the treatment of a common betty offender.
Without reference to the fairness of the far famed and cordially打招呼 "Jim Crow" laws of the South which decree unequal accommodation for equal pay on public carriers, it may be observed that the case of Bishop Martin gives room for the statement that in the whole affair he was blameless. Were it not possible for him to ride the whole length of his car to the South to give him, it should not have been sold to him. He started from the plains of the South en route to another place in the South and, considered from any angle it cannot be successfully argued that the handling of the case was in accordance with strict fairness.
So far, though the railroad accommodations as they effect our people, constitute one of the most cordially hated conditions, we are called upon to face in the South no means of acquiring such accommodations with the recurrence of such cases as this soon there must be determined action on the part of those most qualified to speak for us.
Travel for long distances in the South is never done for pleasure by those of us who have learned the necessity of comfort. A night spent in a "Jim Crow" coach in company with the butcher, the conductor and the porter with whom we are to meet for both men and women, is enough to call forth all sort of protest which, when found to be of little or no use, takes the form of stopping travel except where absolutely necessary.
In seeking a place to sleep and rest in comfort our people are doing only the human thing. They are not, as some may claim, seeking closer contact with those of the other group. By now it seems, that fact should be well known to the most rabid hater of us. The fact is that exactly the contrary is true. The laws as they are written in the South call for separates but equal accommodations. The railroads remember the "separate" part and completely ignore the statement as to "equality." There is reason for the trouble lies. And all attempts at remedying the condition must be aimed at causing them to know that we are in need of the enforcement of the whole law if any.
There is menace to the peace and prosperity of the better thinkers of both groups. And if the protestations so often heard to the effect that the South is the best friend that the Negro has to be believed, here is a fine place for a demonstration. The railroad accommodations for Negroes be made equal as well as separate.
Texas teachers do not want to forget that they are to be on trial at the coming association of national teachers. The quality of the reception accorded them will determine the quality of the interest of Texas in matters educational. It is to be hopeful that they, realizing the gravity of the task that confronts them, will do their bit early in order that the meeting may be in accordance with the reputation of their state.
Great movements to be successful must have the active cooperation of all concerned. To stand and wonder whether or not they will be successful is to guarantee their failure. Realizing the truth of this, Texas and Texasana should seek to cooperate with the movements of national importance in order to advance and that the state be represented in their deliberations.

George Essex was 34 years old and a war veteran. Lou can guess the war yes, he's the same age as the machine gun nest almost single-handed, got wounded for his enthralls and incidently became a war hero and cords. This isn't a war story. This is a tale involving the complications and complications affecting the trot.
When I returned to our home city last summer from a profit-making filling the position of general superintendent of Matt Robertson's family, neither romantic nor uplifting but packed a juicy monthly financial income, and as the American religious beliefs sentiment and plain human love he wasn't compelled to go along with the律治 to the birth. I was a dickened cowboy to take the old side kick and exhalt buddy was actus as prime minister for Matt for doing so to be virtuous in being in love to loaf and hang around where I could depend upon my rights to do so by virtue of being in good health.

As for Mr. Emanuel well, she was a very nice person, a scriptor, as each man has a dif

For as hair, she had loads of it; for skin, she had a lot of it enough to be beautiful. For the rest of her—well, she was neat, and well rounded ankles, and well rounded ankles. She acknowledged the introduction gushily, something like a shout, and voiced me that she troubled that any man whom her husband new would be good enough to be amusedly received by her. Experts in the matter may many women wrenched her woman could not condescend to associate with her husband's pals. I have never not not. I have never given much thought to the subject, but after I met her, I felt alive in my own mind that she would never make herself unhappy by mating with her spouse.
The comic fellows, those chaps who make a living, and shine in the face of fame, and the wannies want humor at matrinecy, have impressed upon the public mind that she is a kind of superhero, throws a series of comic flits, and a few flat flats, every time she goes to dinner, and pays home to dinner without first netting headquarters, but if that is the way of the average woman, she will not laugh. Although she did not expect me, it was just the same as if she would laugh at a little laugh that it wouldn't be any trouble at all to prepare for me. So while she was rushing to the restaurant, she smatches of popular songs as she worked, and took a picture to her set the phonogram to go.

I am perfectly, it's quite a treat to him to stick his legs under a knife to cook food, but I am not praising Carolina's skill as a cook merely because I'd come so long ago. I am not praising her. I'm praising her because she was a mildly good cook, without a doubt. A woman can be a little bit nervous when she turns back. But if she is an exceptionally has a willingness to prepare the dishes her husband makes, and worthy of the loyal faith every man places in his wife, she stands a pretty good match for a selection of affections of a breadwinner.
After dinner Carolina called in one of the neighbors and we played, playing, so enjoyable, infact that the next time he suggests taking dinner with him I did not take dinner with him I did not last forever. Matt Robeson, who was in the habit of hanging out with George in full charge of the day shift, immaculately himself with the idea that it was detrimental to him to take out to labor like to labor the wet sun's hours' of the night, so he made the suggestion that George accuse him of not doing the month or so, and see how he would like it. After a week of the new shift he told himself that it wasn't so bad. Naturally, Carl tried to keep it up. ORCHITIS is an inflammation of the testicles as a rule it is a complication of mumps or it may follow this disease. Orchitis may be traumatic in origin, or it may be a complication in cause. Orchitis following or complicated with mumps run on acute cause lasting on a few days or weeks. Usually there is fever, headache, and an indistinguished testicle is swollen, painful and feels hot to the touch, as a rule only one testicle is affected. This case of Orchitis develops out of every three cases of mumps.
Death has been known to follow or chitis, resulting from a secondary infection of infection to the part tonsomm.
Orchitis may follow, tonsilitis gout, small pox, scarlet fever, in spite of your disease. The treatment is rest in bed with the hips elevated, ice bags or applications applied to the scrotum. Pain should be realised, and the patient should be carefully fitted pressure suspension bandage. These patients should remain in bed for at least three weeks. When I got through with the book, made my way to Alexandra, and she stole the stable by the Dr. Rev. J. R. I will not question the wisdom of God, and I will not question Louisville, Ky., tell the story. For if God wants you, no one can block God's plans. I hope that you will accept it.
Next found me headed for a city called Shreveport in the state of Louisiana. Lou see that someone alighted on Griffin had disappeared, and they were looking for his body dead or alive, they wanted to find what led to his disappearance, leading physician, and I mean all that is implied by leading. He had a hospital, and was doing what he wanted to do to him a call to come at once. It was about 7 o'clock, and the voice was that of a female woman. He took the trip. About eleven o'clock there was another call, and this time informed his wife that her husband was in trouble and that he would remain in the hospital, and the next morning they found him, his automobile, car carrying him, and his friends. Such is life, and there we have it and just where I am not prepared to say. Is he dead? He no is not dead, and he will have the feathers is he? Time may reveal it. It is another novel in the racial life, and you will have to believe it is other one or the other.
I have so often said that this world is full of damphiles, and that but there. But there was a bik time in New Orleans, and a bigger time in Shreveport, and you will rejoice with me that I found a grand master Master Henry Stewart Davie, of the Moniac Templars of the world, awaiting me to come over to the Calantha Temple, and I feel you would lik to know something about a mother monument to the race. Will you wait until I tell you about it. Of course you for you know I am going to ought to ought to know and you can't fake me tell you have. But I am going to let you have some in-

From Shreveport, I made a trip to Texarkana, and I had a time with her. I met her home of Mrs. S. A. Mathes, and then I had the pleasure of seeing Miss Virginia Adams, the stenotherapist trained nurse, and Mrs. Duckle Kennedy, the hairdresser and the like. All I were delighted to see Mrs. Kennedy, who came from there, I made my way to Beaumont, Texas, found Dr. C. B. Charlton, waiting for me at the door. That is to say we went to call on Dr. A. W. Williams, the doctor, and found him ready to shake my ill black hand and make both of us welcome. There was a big welcome going on to this room. Dr. Williams after I had talked with his wife, hitched up his auto-monitoring to this room, and toted us out to Dr. Charlton.
Next found me on the rest, and started the next morning for New Orleans trip this time, because I am right here in the Nation's industrial area. Prof. N. W. Collier, an able educator, president, and associated in the work is one of the strongest in the area. Sarah A. Blocker, a native of Geodogia.
Now remember I have told you about this school before. It was at one time located in Jacksonville, Fla., known then as the Baptist Academy, but the white school here making heavy donations. It is here and they are building up a new building for the race. A new building will be dedicated next month, but it will be in April when you read about it. It is 24th of this month. The building cost just on $35,000 and is indeed a fine building. The school
I wish you could drop in here and see them dedicate the building, for they are going to have Governor, John C. A. Erwinton. We have been invited to make the principal address, but they have not heard it, and the students of Hot Springs, John L. Custodian of the Woodmen of Union, and many have been invited to be here. I will tell you more information about the Information comes to me that the National Race Congress will meet in Washington, D. C. April 16. I will be invited for a great big meeting believe me. If he is going to be a great meet-in from start to finish, I will be invited to the school and I will be gone for a few days. If I do not have to go to it, I will hear from me later. If I do not have to go to Third Street, N. W. Washington, D. C I will bring this letter to a stop
